Two hundred years ago, before the Industrial Revolution, the rivers across North America ran clear and blue. Beginning in the 1800s, the growth of manufacturing and agriculture brought prosperity, but at the great cost of unmitigated pollution. While the food industry has been focused on profitability, their agricultural practices have resulted in rainstorms washing pesticides, fertilizers, feedlot manure, and bare soil into our waterways and oceans, turning rivers from clear reflections of blue skies to hues of greenish brown. And human health has suffered as well. Our guest John Roulac [https://johnroulac.com/], Founder of Nutiva and Executive Producer of the recently premiered documentary film, Common Ground, delivers the good news: there are profitable and earth-friendly ways to grow nutrient-dense food, draw down carbon to address climate chaos, and return our rivers to their natural blue appearance. He discusses his many nonprofit organizations and two documentary films focused on soil regeneration as an important way forward. John illuminates the harsh realities of our industrial agricultural practices and presents a compelling case for a regenerative revolution. From the loss of winged insects to the acidification of oceans, he paints a vivid picture of the ecological crisis at hand. We discuss how we can transform degraded lands into flourishing ecosystems, and why sustainable agriculture isn't enough. Learn about the power of regenerative agriculture to restore biodiversity, improve food security, and heal our planet. John's message is clear – we must transition now from destructive farming to practices that could save our ecosystems and our personal health. Food for thought: the solution to our climate crisis already exists. In fact, it lies right under our feet. It begins and ends with our SOIL - and we are honored to welcome a leader in the regenerative movement, John Roulac to explain why. John is a powerhouse with a deeply caring heart and conscience. Serial entrepreneur, investor, climate activist, Roulac has sourced and formulated $1B in retail sales of organic superfoods (with Nutiva), served as executive producer of the film "Kiss the Ground” and upcoming “Common Ground” and has leveraged his success to found six non-profit organizations, including Agroforestry Regeneration Communities (ARC) and Forests Forever. In this episode, John and Nitsa dive into an unfiltered dialogue around food security, sovereignty, soil cycles, how the regenerative model can be used to save small > large scale farms, failing businesses and ecosystems on the brink of collapse, the dangers of green/brain/washing, and why challenging the status quo is crucial. John Roulac is a regenerative leader in deep integrity with conscious and reflective entrepreneurship. He founded Nutiva and Executive Produced the documentary Kiss the Ground. He has also co-founded the nonprofits ARC, Agroforestry Regeneration Communities, accelerates food forests around the world and the Great Plains Regeneration, which supports farmers and ranchers with a just transition to regenerative farming. John is also available for speaking engagements about healthier food systems and more resiliency based entrepreneurship. https://johnroulac.com/ https://kisstheground.com/take-action/ https://agroforestryrc.org/ https://greatplainsregen.org/ https://johnroulac.com/articles/ https://johnroulac.com/making-americas-rivers-blue-again-connecting-the-dots-between-regenerative-ag-healthy-waterways/ https://johnroulac.com/from-corrupted-to-trusted-liberal-americas-shifting-perceptions-of-the-fda/ https://wedeepen.com/ https://democrasee.club/
Founder of Nutiva and Executive Producer of Kiss the Ground, John Roulac, was catalyzed into environmental activism and entrepreneurship at a young age when nuclear waste was dumped just miles from where he grew up. This led him on his life path of learning to honor nature, creating a hugely successful superfood company, and now actively promoting regeneration of the planet through several nonprofits, including Agroforestry Regeneration Communities (ARC), which has facilitated the planting of 2 million trees and 5,000 food forests. We talk all things ethical entrepreurship, the importance of not succumbing to divisive narratives in the media, techniques for regenerating the planet and resource recommendations from John for people looking to walk this path. This is a broad-reaching episode with one of the most successful entrepreneurs in this movement, and I'm honored to have hosted this interview! Agroforestry Regeneration Communities Join the email list Join the Regenerative Rituals Course + Community waitlist Book a 1:1 Green Guidance session Recommended books: The Ecology of Commerce by Paul Hawken and The Way of the Wyrd by Ryan Bates Show Notes: There's 500 million farmers in the global south that can plant 500 billion trees with basic empowerment. This is what John helps to facilitate with Agroforestry Regeneration Communities; he firmly believes in being of service brings value to our own lives. Ethical entrepreneurship: the importance of focusing on culture for their supply chain and their team - if toxic things get put into a petri dish, when things multiply in that, they're unhealthy. Recognizing intelligence in employees, no matter their qualifications or background, and promoting and advancing especially women. Also helping provide productive trees and other resources for producers. Acknowledging our privilege and using it to try to make things better & be active catalysts for positive change. Critiques of Kiss the Ground's erasure of the indigenous practices/indigenous knowledge base. Current issues of losing 70% of winged insects, 60% of plankton in the ocean (and losing 1-2% per year due to pesticides and acidification of the oceans eating their shells, respectively), it's key to focus on regeneration & restoring the water cycle. The distinction between harm reduction & active regeneration - they get mixed by sources that greenwash. There's no product to buy that can fix the systemic issues that we have. Rotational grazing as an option for regenerating landscapes & increasing soil health & rainfall, as well as partnering with beavers and using check dams, and intentional burning - the importance of ACTING instead of blaming people. Collapse may be what will finally wake people up to the importance of drastic change - and being open to it. Generational and economic difficulties for millennials and younger - returning to communal living, living in more rural areas, working remotely - our economic system is not designed for success. His experiences meeting people with the least amount of money, and them having the most warmth, happiness, connection, openness, being more dynamic and alive - true wealth! & so much more!
There is a lot to learn about Hemp Seed Oil (HSO). The main reason why I wanted to cover it was that there is a lot of misinformation about the product. It is not hard to find hemp in food products. It is dang easy to find claims or promises of calm or relaxation. People that have an anxiety condition are prime suckers for dark side entrepreneurs. Ignorance helps them to take advantage and money. Or worse, place your health at risk. If you know the core basics, you might still be anxious but you will be an informed consumer. To summarize: The oil is legal on the federal level, provided the seeds and the resultant product contains less than 0.3% THC or psych-active properties. Those states with legalized hemp and marijuana laws permit the sale of this product. Other states do not and it will be up to you to know the difference. Hemp Seed Oil is good for a lot of things: There is some nutritional value Can be used for cold food recipes like salad dressings and other foods Good for the hair, skin and nails What it is not good for is treatment for anxiety symptoms. It does not have the properties to relax you or help you control your symptoms. So yeah, unless you or someone you know is operating under the power of the placebo. it isn't going to do much for you. However, in this episode, I talk about safe ways to obtain the product and pay a fair price. They are very similar to buying CBD oil. If you need support contact the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 988 or 1-800-273-8255, the Trevor Project at 1-866-488-7386 or text “START” to 741-741. Resources Mentioned: The U.S. Food Data Central Database has a branded search feature helps you to find products with hemp in them in the U.S. and NZ. It is one of the ways I found out about some of the U.S. oil vendors. U.S. Food and Drug Administration wants you to understand what it means when you see something that states it is FDA approved. They have an FAQ page. I'm not linking to these vendors. They are for example purposes only. I do want to show examples of vendors that can be found in brick and mortar stores, direct to vendor websites or at third party vendor websites. Manitoba Harvest Organic Hemp Seed Oil, has a website for both U.S. and Canadian customers. The company has both hemp and CBD products and shipping to all states for the oil. They have recipes and information about the product. Nutiva also has a website, but you won't find HSO under oils but under seeds. Has a store locator which might help you find it locally and the do have shipping. Foods Alive's website also has a store locator and shipping. Knwble Grwn Pure Hemp Seed Oil - this is a company or subsidiary that belong to multinational food corporation ADM aka The Archer-Daniels-Midland corporation. You cannot purchase from the site but you can see an example of when cannabis becomes legal they will be in the game. About John Roulac John is a hemp innovator, serial entrepreneur, investor, philanthropist, writer, and champion of regenerative agriculture. As the 1999 founder of the organic superfoods brand Nutiva, he has sourced and formulated $1B in retail sales of organic superfoods in the past 20 years. Through his leadership, Nutiva became the fastest-growing superfoods company on the planet and was named one of Inc. magazine's fastest-growing companies in America for seven years in a row. He is also an executive producer of the Netflix blockbuster regenerative agriculture film Kiss the Ground, which is narrated by Woody Harrelson. John was blessed to spend his childhood summers on the islands of the Pacific Northwest, where he played among the forests and tide pools. When nuclear waste was dumped nine miles from his California home, John's ecological awareness was awakened. He began his central life journey: to study natural systems and discover practical solutions to pressing environmental challenges. Over his career, John has founded six non-profit organizations, including Great Plains Regeneration, Agroforestry Regeneration Communities (creating regenerative food forests), and Forests Forever which placed the California Forest Protection Act, Prop 130, on the California state ballot in 1990. His passionate hemp advocacy brought him to sue the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency. This long legal battle culminated in a historic 2004 federal court victory to keep hemp foods legal. He is a pioneer of the modern home-composting movement and has authored four books on hemp and composting that have combined sales of more than one million copies. He has been interviewed on numerous radio and television programs and has been widely quoted in the print media—from Wired magazine to the Los Angeles Times and the Wall Street Journal. Dine and Design Series Part V “There are a lot of good opportunities to make the world better. The question is, will we do it?” -John Roulac Episode Description: We are at a crossroads. There's a very large transition that we need to make as humans, in order to ensure the future of our planet. We must shift away from industrial agricultural methods as, without question, these methods currently fall short in many ways. They create soil degradation, water pollution, deforestation, and other global environmental issues that we are trying so hard to combat. For thousands of years, farmers and gardeners have used plants as our most powerful tools for regenerating the landscape, expanding carbon sequestration, providing healthy food choices, and feeding the communities around us. We are living in a time where it is crucial that we make these lands functional again. In this episode, Justine and Bridget interview John Roulac, the founder of the organic superfoods brand Nutiva and Executive Producer of Netflix Blockbuster's hit, Kiss the Ground. John has been passionate about the environment from youth on and has made it his life's mission to revolutionize the way the world eats, and today he's sharing how he was able to do that effectively over the years. John also shares the unspoken truths about industrial agriculture, how our everyday choices impact the environment on a larger scale, and how important regenerative agriculture is to securing the Earth's future. Tune in to hear design ideas to make agriculture more efficient and sustainable. Meet John: John is a hemp innovator, serial entrepreneur, investor, philanthropist, writer, and champion of regenerative agriculture. In 1999, John founded the organic superfoods brand Nutiva. He has sourced and formulated $1B in retail sales of organic superfoods in the past 20 years. Through his leadership, Nutiva became the fastest-growing superfoods company on the planet and was named one of Inc. magazine's fastest-growing companies in America for seven years in a row. He is also an executive producer of the Netflix blockbuster regenerative agriculture film Kiss the Ground, narrated by Woody Harrelson. John was blessed to spend his childhood summers on the islands in the Pacific Northwest, where he played among the forests and tide pools. When nuclear waste was dumped nine miles from his California home, John's ecological awareness was awakened. He began his central life journey: to study natural systems and discover practical solutions to pressing environmental challenges. Over his career, John has founded six non-profit organizations, including Great Plains Regeneration, Agroforestry Regeneration Communities (creating regenerative food forests), and Forests Forever, which placed the California Forest Protection Act, Prop 130, on the California state ballot in 1990. In his leisure time, John enjoys travel, hiking, playing basketball, and soaking in natural hot springs. John Roulac is a true natural foods and agriculture pioneer, having sued the DEA and winning regarding hemp seed legality, founding Nutiva superfoods, and producing Kiss the Ground on Netflix. We talk about all of this and more. John had just finished his appearance on RFK Jr.'s podcast and was fired up. John is highly controversial because he is a self identified liberal who happens to question the liberal agenda for foods and pharmaceuticals (similar to RFK Jr.). John rightly identifies that many of today's liberals are like yesterday's right wingers dictating and demanding an anti-freedom and dangerous agenda. Despite all of this, John leaves us with a positive message: "Don't Hate. Even Bayer/Monsanto...don't hate them." Note: Ashley On represents a staunchly independent political viewpoint.
John Roulac, Founder of Nutiva, Co-Founder Agroforestry Regeneration Communities. John W. A longtime advocate for healthy people and ecosystems, with expertise ranging from home composting and natural healing to forestry and hemp agriculture, John has authored four books on environmental topics, with combined sales of more than one million copies. He helped jumpstart the modern home-composting movement in the early 1990s and successfully sued the US DEA to keep hemp foods legal in 2001. He has founded four nonprofit ecological groups, including GMOInside.org. John speaks on environmental issues at various conferences, including but not limited to Soil Not Oil, EcoFarm, Provender Alliance, and Bioneers.

John Roulac started natural and superfoods brand Nutiva in 1999 because of his deeply held belief that it is his purpose to challenge the industrial food model and create a better food system to nourish people, communities, and our planet. Through his leadership, Nutiva has become one of the fastest-growing superfoods company in the world. Nutiva has been named one of Inc. Magazine’s fastest-growing private companies in America for seven years in a row – with sales topping $100mm in 2015. As you’ll hear in our 45 conversation the vast majority of USA grown hemp uses harsh chemical fertilizers, rotated with industrial GMO corn and soy and contributes to climate change and ocean die off. As John tells us – RE Botanicals is commitment to the highest quality, and insures you that the product you consume is pure and organic. They source differentiated products in a new world of Hemp production. For your future CBD needs – might want to look under the hood a bit and determine for yourself why Sourcing Matters. TuneIn to hear what’s going on with the future production of hemp, and regenerative agriculture in the United States. www.SourcingMatters.show
Topic:What you eat can help save the planet. Guest & Organization:https://infiniteearthradio.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/John-Roulac.jpg ()John W. Roulac is the founder and CEO of Nutiva, the world’s leading organic superfoods brand of hemp, coconut, chia, and red palm superfoods. John founded Nutiva in 1999 with a mission to nourish people and planet. Through his leadership, Nutiva has become the fastest-growing superfoods company on the planet, with a 55 percent annual growth rate since 2002, and has for five years in a row been named one of Inc. magazine’s fastest-growing companies in America. This growth keeps bringing John closer to his dream of a world that places people above profits—one where people everywhere have access to wholesome, organic foods. Nutiva® is the world’s leading brand of all-organic hemp foods, coconut oil, red palm oil and chia seeds. We’re a values-driven brand, dedicated to “Nourishing people and planet.” In a world where the industrialized food system has led us down a tangled path, where food choices have been reduced to the lesser-of-evils, and where distrust reigns, we are the champions of the greater good. Tireless seekers of pure and delicious foods that will nourish our bodies and our planet, we have devoted ourselves to a dream, a vision, a mission. We will revolutionize the way the world eats! And in so doing we will bring nourishment and balance, health and well being, sustainability and community to people and planet. We know change is hard, but we want to make it easy. We went out looking for the kind of foods that packed a powerful amount of nutrition into every bite, so that you could make small changes to big effect. We found superfoods—nutrient-dense powerhouses that can also be grown and processed in a sustainable way. These are foods that are truly good for you and for the planet. They’re foods like hemp and coconut, chia and red palm. They’re organic, full of vital nutrition, easy to use and delicious additions to your diet. We say food doesn’t have to be a choice between the lesser of evils. We say let food lead us to a better world. We say super people deserve superfoods. We say, come join us in our mission. Together, we can change the world. Ryan Honeyman is a consultant and author of The B Corp Handbook: How to Use Business as a Force for Good (Berrett-Koehler Publishers, October 2014). Ryan has helped over 30 companies--like Ben & Jerry’s, King Arthur Flour, Method, Klean Kanteen, and Nutiva--become Certified B Corporations and maximize the value of their B Corp certification. He also trains aspiring impact consultants via his recurring "Secrets of B Corp Consulting" courses. Along with his LIFT Economy team, Ryan helped cofound the Force for Good Fund, a $1M fund that invests in women and people of color-owned, "Best for the World" B Corps (e.g., those that score in the top 10% of all B Corps worldwide). He is also a co-host of "Next Economy Now," a podcast highlighting the leaders who are taking a regenerative, bio-regional, democratic, transparent, and whole-systems approach to using business for good. Ryan Joins Sustainable Nation to Discuss: The Force For Good Fund The B Corp Movement Importance of Social equity and diversity in the sustainability movement Benefits of becoming a B Corp Advice and recommendations for sustainability leaders Ryan's Final Five Question Responses: What is one piece of advice you would give other sustainability professionals that might help them in their careers? One thing that stands out is, again, that you don't really need a particular background or experience to do sustainability or to make the jump. For example, even if you've done social studies or chemistry for 10 years, doesn't mean you can't be a sustainability consultant or professional. So I would just say it's more about connecting it to your passion and making the leap, then having some particular background lined up. What are you most excited about right now in the world of sustainability? I think a lot of sustainable businesses, who are sort of deep in the eco movements, are starting to realize that things like diversity, equity, inclusion and racial justice are just as important. Sometimes as sustainable businesses we can sort of nerd out on the way that carbon in the soil gets sequestered, but the neighborhood a few miles away is burning because of economic inequality and sort of like fighting between racial fights. So I started to see more businesses in the community, and also in sustainable business movement, start to say, "What are we doing about inclusive hiring practices? How are we looking at not just having a diverse group of people but also making them feel included and belonging?" So really looking at, is the product or service serving different communities, people of color, women, LGBTQ, immigrant communities? So it's been really exciting for me looking at sustainable business and regenerative development beyond just the environmental lens only. What is one book you'd recommend sustainability professionals read? This is a book that I read that was pretty powerful. It's not necessarily narrowly within the sustainable business category. Charles Eisenstein wrote it, it's called A More Beautiful World Our Hearts Know is Possible. So, Charles Eisenstein's a pretty cool guy, a philosopher, but also interested in climate change and regenerative ag. But this book is really looking on a deeper level, how do you really make personal changes and perceptual changes that can help you in your career? And so I think that it's applicable to sustainability professionals as well. What are some of your favorite resources or tools that really help you in the work that you do? Definitely bcorporation.net and the bimpactassessment.net. Those are two free tools for folks who are just interested in benchmarking their social and environmental performance. I definitely love podcasting, as Josh knows. We have our own podcast, Next Economy Now, the Lift Economy podcast. I'm super excited there's more people like you, Josh, who're doing this sort of like pumping out more information about regenerative development. Just keep following Josh's podcasts. Finally, where can our listeners go to learn more about you and the work that you are leading? Yeah, so our website is lifteconomy.com. Our podcast is Next Economy Now and we're on iTunes and Google Play and Soundcloud. If folks want to check us out on twitter, I think it's at @lifteconomy. And then my email address is on the Lift Economy website as well if folks want to reach out directly.

We’re so into, like, that wind and solar will carry the day, or some new battery technology. And these are obviously important, and we need to stop burning coal and invest in renewables, but equally important is to use regenerative agriculture through a variety of practices such as composting; holistic grazing, which is a more intelligent way to raise animals versus putting them in a pen and cages; growing more diverse crops, cover crops; and the like can really help create...
Please leave us a review at http://openskyfitness.com/review To change a habit, you have to get to the source. In the case of nutrition, you first have to tackle your kitchen if you want to change things around and start eating healthy. As part of our October Nutrition Month, this week, Devon and I are sharing our favorite kitchen clean out hacks with you. We'll go over what foods you should get rid of what healthier substitutes you should replace them with. Because we have so much information to share on this podcast, we are saving our tips about family health and nutrition for next week's episode. Have a specific question about nutrition? If you have any specific questions or concerns about nutrition, contact us by email at rob@openskyfitness.com and devon@openskyfitness.com. Talk about nutrition with us! We've already been discussing nutrition and motivation tactics on the Open Sky Fitness Podcast Facebook Group. Click here to join the conversation: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1794246394138633/ Each week, we'll be discussing a different nutrition topic in the following order: 9 Weeks of Nutrition Topics Week 1- Which Popular Diet is Best for You? Week 2-Kitchen Clean Out Hacks Week 3- Tools to Help to Tweak Your Diet Week 4- Gut Health & Foods That Heal Week 5- Hot topics: Gluten, Sugar, and Carbs Week 6- Nutrition Out of the Kitchen Week 7-Eating Habits During the Holidays Week 8- Holiday Meal Plan Week 9- Food Hangover Week: Getting Back on Track After the Holidays How Do You Know If A Diet is Right For You? Last week, we discussed the pros and cons of 15 different popular diets. With all of the information we shared, it can be difficult to know if a new diet is actually right for you. To know if a specific diet is right for you, think about what health goals you want to achieve and whether you're actually achieving them or not. Do you want to lose weight? Have more energy? Improve your gut health? If you're not seeing results, you may need to stop your diet and change to something different. When you begin a new diet, start with the basics. Devon and I agree that an elimination diet helps people to understand which specific foods cause different symptoms such as gas, dizziness, low-energy etc. To begin an elimination diet, start with just eating the basic non-reactive foods to have a starting point. Next, begin adding in different foods again and keep a food journal. Note down anything important such as a change to your energy level or if your poop changes significantly because it can tell you a lot about your diet. How to Start a Kitchen Clean Out To begin a kitchen clean out, get rid of any empty calorie trigger foods including: Potato chips and similar snacks Ice cream and similar dairy based desserts Regular soda and diet soda Candy Frozen pizza Frozen TV dinners like lean cuisine and Weight Watchers meals Make sure you take your time to clean out the kitchen. You don't have to go cold turkey and throw everything out in one day. Maybe you want to do it all in one day, but it can be hard. Clean out your kitchen in steps by taking it day by day or get rid of something each week and replace it with something healthier. Pay Attention to Unhealthy Ingredients on Food Labels Look out and avoid the following unhealthy ingredients on food labels. If you see any on the packaging of the products in your kitchen, get rid of them. MSG - Monosodium glutamate Artificial flavors and coloring (can also contain MSG) Pesticides on farm-grown fruits and vegetables Low-fat and labeled "heart healthy" whole-grain foods Hydrogenated oils High fructose corn syrup Oils: Vegetable oils, canola oils for baking foods Artificial sugars such as Splenda, aspartame, saccharin artificial sugars If you don't know the ingredients listed and you need to decide whether to keep it or not, do some research online to decide what to do. What a Healthy Kitchen Looks Like There are always plenty of healthy substitutes and items that you should have in your kitchen. For example, when it comes to sugar substitutes, we highly suggest Stevia, coconut sugar, molasses, and real maple sugar. We suggest always have the following on hand: Coconut oil Avocado oil Olive oil Grass-fed butter Plenty of seasonings including salt and pepper And always keep your kitchen clean. If you always come home to a messy kitchen with dirty dishes piling up, you won't feel motivated to cook and could take the easy way out by eating processed foods rather taking time to cook a healthy, easy meal. For all of our Clean Out Kitchen Hacks, listen to the entire podcast.
