In this episode of Athletistry: Ballet Evolution, Shane Wuerthner dives deep into the misunderstood world of artistry in ballet—what it is, how it develops, and why telling dancers to “show more artistry” is often unhelpful and misdirected.Shane unpacks his personal journey with artistic growth, shares insights from his time dancing Vronski in Anna Karenina, and breaks down how life experience, emotional maturity, and mentorship shape an artist over time. He also explores how competitions and training environments may unintentionally limit expression by hyper-focusing on technique. You'll learn:Why artistry shouldn't be expected equally from every age levelHow technique, musicality, and storytelling evolve in stagesWhat teachers can do to nurture expression without pressureThe power of watching professionals—and how to watch themWhy artistry is less about adding more and more about refining what's already thereWhether you're a student trying to find your voice, a teacher looking to guide dancers more effectively, or a professional reflecting on your own path—this episode will challenge how you think about performance, training, and the true role of artistry in ballet.

Let me ask you this: When you're in meetings with decisionmakers, what are you most focused on? If you're like most advocates, you got a lot going on in your head. You're thinking about your framing, and making sure it resonates with that decisionmaker. You're wanting to make sure you get your messaging delivered, that you cover the things you want to cover. All of that's important. But it carries the potential danger of creating a huge blind spot that can cost you. We can get so busy in our head with what we're going to say, that listening kind of gets shoved to the background. So I want to ask you to think about maybe doing a reset on that. And try on the idea that maybe, even more important than telling them what you have to tell them, is listening for what they're telling you. The truth is, every time a decision-maker opens their mouth, they're telling you something of value that you can use to make your engagement of them more effective and more powerful. Which in turn, will move you towards your goal faster. In any encounter with a decision maker, no matter what's going on. One of the most valuable and effective things you can do is become a next-level, ninja-level listener. In this episode, we share:What makes deep listening so powerful as a tool to engage decisionmakersThe three things that get in the way of deep listeningThree mindset shifts that will empower you to listen more deeplyPractical techniques you can start using today that will take your listening skills to the next levelHow to open a conversation to get immediate engagement from a decisionmakerHow to avoid misinterpreting tone and body languageGive these mindset shifts and strategies a try, and let me know how it goes! Failure is an experience that is deeply embedded into our lives. As we learn to walk we fall. As we learn to ride a bike we (usually) fall again. And yet even though it is so familiar, so intertwined with our journey through life, not all failure is created equal. Which brings up important questions:How do we fail well? What are the crucial distinctions that might help us separate good failure from bad?How do we learn to identify when failure is our friend, and prevent most of it when it is not? These bigger questions about failing wisely are at the core of the conversation today. Dr. Amy Edmondson is back on the show and together we'll explore:How we can stay open to learning from failure at the individual and team levelHow leaders can create the conditions for learning in the face of failures. The importance of curiosity before blame - and a simple way to practice itThe reasons why most failures are not blameworthy and yet that is often the knee jerk reaction in organizationsThe three types of failure and how diagnosing failure type can lead to learning and preventing further failure.Painful emotions that can arise in the face of failure, and the importance of compassion, vulnerability, and giving ourselves permission to be human. Why failure is not an equal opportunity proposition, and her vision for a world where everyone has equal license to fail intelligently. Some of Amy's reflections on the importance of play, having fun, experimenting, taking risks, trying new things, and why practicing in low stakes situations has tremendous upside when it comes to getting better at failing. I have had a lot of requests to talk about Breast Implant Illness (BII), so here we go! My guest today is Dr. Robert Whitfield, a conventionally trained surgeon who has spent decades as a plastic surgeon working with patients with breast cancer, who has developed a unique approach to recovery and healing people with these conditions, as well as using alternative methods for breast reconstruction without implants. BII is a condition where people who have had breast implants go on to develop conditions, such as chronic fatigue, brain fog, joint pain, hormone imbalance, and premature menopause, all driven by inflammation continuing to react to the implant that is in your body. You will hear more about:How BII impacts the body at a systemic levelHow other ailments can mimic this condition (and how we go about sorting that out!)Is explant surgery (implant removal) the right choice? How Dr. Whitfield's Holistic Accelerated Recovery Program makes a difference in a patient's recovery outcomeWhat you can do if you still want implantsAnd more!More about Dr. Whitfield:Dr. Whitfield is an experienced, Board Certified Plastic Surgeon. He completed six years of surgical training at Indiana University Medical Center. He remained at the Indiana University Medical Center to complete his Plastic Surgery Residency. At the completion of his Plastic Surgery Residency he chose to gain additional training in Microsurgery and Aesthetic Surgery by completing a one year fellowship.Dr. Whitfield focuses on providing clients with nutritional guidance, nutraceutical advice, personal genetic predisposition screening, non-invasive, minimally invasive and surgical options for treatments all over the body. He has completed over 4000 breast procedures since 2004 including over 500 implant removals. He has the largest series of explant specimens with PCR testing. While serving as the President Elect of the Research Foundation he gave testimony at the FDA hearings in 2019 regarding BII. Dr. Whitfield's philosophy is that the best plastic surgery results are the ones you don't see. He also strongly believes that patients have a right to know about ALL their non-surgical options before considering surgery. His goal is to work with you to bring about your self vision in a way that appears natural, flawless and 100% you.Connect with Dr. Whitfield:Dr. Whitfield's Website: https://www.drrobertwhitfield.com/Dr. Whitfield's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/drrobertwhitfield/Dr. Whitfield's Store: https://drrobssolutions.myshopify.com/Connect with Dr. Tabatha:Dr. Tabatha's Website: https://www.drtabatha.com/Dr. Tabatha's Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/DrTabathaDr. Tabatha's IG: https://www.instagram.com/thegutsygynecologist/Dr. Tabatha's YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCWea1x1abLERehb5yn_nfowThe Functional Gynecologist's Guide to Balancing your Hormones: https://lcvjtpc8.pages.infusionsoft.net/LOOK AND FEEL AMAZING!
