In this episode, we talk with Anne Michaud, Author of "Why They Stay" As a leading political reporter for the Wall Street Journal, Anne Michaud covered Bill Clinton's 1996 re-election campaign, Anthony Weiner's 2005 mayoral bid, and Eliot Spitzer's rise and fall as New York's governor from 2006 to 2008. Few folks have had the front row seat to the spectacular fall from grace of these politicians and the women who endured the cataclysm with them. Which got her wondering--as so many of us have--why did most of these women stick it out--or stay for as long as they did? Were they simply doing the Stand By Your Man blues, or did they have other motivations? Why They Stay: Sex Scandals, Deals, and Hidden Agenda of Eight Political Wives is the result of her musings and her deeply researched and fascinating analysis. Anne chose to look at eight couples and explore the similarities between them -- how the women responded to the crisis and its aftermath. These women made bold decisions that revealed their own agendas. · Hillary & Bill Clinton: One masterful decision launched her political career · Jackie & John F. Kennedy: Coping in bed and all the way to the bank · Eleanor & Franklin D. Roosevelt: A lifeless marriage sparks a social champion · Marion Stein & Jeremy Thorpe: Riding out British scandal to provide for her sons · Wendy & David Vitter: Married to the Party versus married to a man · Silda Wall & Elliot Spitzer: Real-life drama spawns TV show The Good Wife · Huma Abedin & Anthony Weiner: How to win against a man and the Media · Melania & Donald Trump: A foreigner's desire to live the American dream Anne found some interesting correlations between all of them and Elizabeth Woodville, the "White Queen" of English history. A widow, she married Edward IV for love, endured his promiscuity to stay and wield power, and ultimately, outlasted him to build the Tudor legacy through engineering her daughter's marriage to Edward's successor. Anne looked at 5 factors in her books--how deeply are these women committed to being the family emotional caretaker, how patriarchal values drive their actions, how motivated are they about building a family legacy, the degree to which financial and emotional security drives their actions, and do they have a sense of patriotism that inspires them to overlook the misdeeds of their husband for the greater good. She assigned each a "White Queen Quotient" measured against Woodville's iconic role as the ultimate political spouse in the face of scandalous male behavior. While we as spectators can only speculate about what drives them, Why They Stay makes a great case for what causes each of these women to play out their roles as stay-beyond-the-embarrassment wives. If Hillary Clinton had left her marriage, she might only be known as the spurned wife of a retired politician. Instead, she became the first woman to run for U.S. president on a major party ticket, a U.S. Senator and Secretary of State. These political wives aren't powerless pawns. They are shrewder than you expect. Why They Stay pulls back the curtain to reveal why women throughout history stand by their man...for better and for worse. In addition to her reportage at the Wall Street Journal, Anne previously wrote a nationally syndicated op-ed column for Newsday from 2008 to 2018. She has won more than 25 writing and reporting awards and has twice been named "Columnist of the Year," by the New York News Publishers Association and the New York State Associated Press Association. Her work has appeared in the Los Angeles Times, The Boston Globe, Newsweek, BusinessWeek.com, Crain's NY Business, Cincinnati Magazine and more. Anne has appeared on numerous television and radio programs, including WNYC's The Brian Lehrer Show, NY1's Reporters' Roundtable, and Fox 5 News WNYW....

https://annemichaud.com/ anne.michaud.harman@gmail.com “A journalist explores the motivations and emotional constructs of political wives who chose to stay in their marriages—in some cases, only for a while—after being confronted with their husbands' infidelities .... Skillful prose makes the dishy profiles an engaging read .... A lively political book ...." — Kirkus Reviews Why They Stay is about the lives of politically married women who have stood by their men after sex scandals. It covers Eleanor Roosevelt, Jackie Kennedy, Hillary Clinton, Silda Wall Spitzer, Huma Abedin Weiner and more. Looking back on the path chosen by the women profiled in this book, we have the evidence to see a pattern as old as the dynastic maneuverings of England's medieval queens. The women married to the "royalty" of our times, politicians, make cold calculations in order to hold onto their "thrones" and their family's history-making potential. Why They Stay argues that women in the limelight remain loyal to their men, because of complex, often unconscious forces. From mapping a path to power to laudable notions of holding the family together, the author examines the uniquely challenging Faustian bargains that political wives grapple with, even as the public spotlight illuminates their every move. Winner of multiple national book honors, including in the categories of Women's Issues and Current Events. Audio and e-book versions are available. Have you ever watched a sex scandal unfold on TV or in the news and wondered to yourself, “Why on earth is she staying?” You are not alone! Like many others, I too was confused by what I saw. Until I experienced my own husband's cheating and made the decision to stay. Veteran political journalist Anne Michaud wondered too, examining the patterns of behaviors among betrayed political wives from Eleanor Roosevelt to Melania Trump in her newly released book, Why They Stay, which explores the decisions political wives make to stay with their unfaithful husbands. Top take-a-ways: Betrayed wives aren't powerless pawns. They are shrewder (in a good way) than you'd expect and able to use betrayal as a catalyst for growth. Pulling back the curtain on the commonalities between women throughout history who have stood by their man … for better and for worse. Why good women stay with bad men and why it's okay to advocate for what you want, including changing your mind. Why They Stay reveals the bold decisions and inner lives of eight political wives as they fight to maintain a grip on power, the emotional safety of their families, and pursue their own dreams: Melania & Donald Trump: A foreigner's desire to live the American dream Hillary & Bill Clinton: One masterful decision launched her political career Jackie & John F. Somewhere in the Middle with Michele Barard welcomes bestselling author Rev. Dr. Nicole B. Simpson Reverend Dr. Nicole B. Simpson, CFP®, is a practitioner with over 29 years of experience in the securities industry. On September 11, 2001, her life was drastically altered while working as a financial planner on the 73rd floor of 2 World Trade Center. Simpson was on the 44th floor when Tower 2 was hit during the World Trade Center attacks. Today, Simpson compassionately assists families on how to begin to walk along the road to recovery when faced with a catastrophic, unexpected disaster. She is actively involved in spiritual, emotional, and economic empowerment. A compelling empowerment speaker, television/ radio personality and author, Ms. Simpson travels throughout the United States teaching in a practical and easy to understand manner. Her straightforward approach motivates everyone who hears her message to take action to change their future. Her commitment is to engage people with the thought, “If money were not an issue, what would be your life’s purpose?” Pastor Nicole’s life began to take shape when she turned seven years old. Gifted with a Bible by her mother, she spent most of her time in her room reading the red words in that Bible, which sparked her interest. Those red words told her to do good to please God, and they taught her how to pray. Through scripture, she learned how to seek God’s comfort amid every storm. Like most individuals, Nicole has suffered unexpected, significant personal tragedies that have affected her entire family emotionally and financially. What is critical, but often avoided, is the experience and willingness to share strategies that instruct others how to overcome unexpected disasters that can stagnate one’s personal life because of a crisis. “How does one pick up the pieces of their life and move toward their ordained purpose?” She can answer those questions and put the necessary steps into perspective to begin the recovery process. In January 2016, Dr. SImpson embarked on a new life journey. She became the pastor of Micah 7 Ministries in Piscataway, NJ. She is the visionary and CEO of the Power of Gospel Ministries, a best-selling author, and an entrepreneur. Simpson has written several books, including Planning for A Reason, a Season, and a Lifetime, The Ultimate Plan…A Financial Survival Guide for Life’s Unexpected Events, which was nationally distributed through Tate Publishing, and Dare 2 Dream…Pushing Past Your Pain to Pursue Purpose, a book that changes the lives of everyone who reads it. It later became her first Amazon bestseller. In June 2011, Simpson released 9/11/01: A Long Road Toward Recovery, her second best-selling book. The book reflected upon the challenges of World Trade Center survivors who had been neglected emotionally and economically. In January 2014, she released her fifth book, Personal Prayer for all Occasions. Her highly anticipated sixth title addressing how to recognize the voice of God, Listen and Learn How God Speaks to You, was recently released. Nicole’s media profile includes appearances on CNN News, BBC World News, Huffington Post, Crain's NY Business, Fox News, and UPN 9. Nicole B. Simpson is a Cum Laude graduate of Oral Roberts University. She completed her Master of Divinity degree at New Brunswick Theological Seminary in May 2016 Magna Cum Laude. In January 2017, Simpson enrolled in Boston University to pursue her Doctor of Ministries in Transformational Leadership, which she completed in December 2019.

Sharon Allen's lecture was presented on February 19, 2008. Throughout the 20th century, the talent management model for businesses evolved to become known as the "career ladder," in which employees would continually proceed upward until they reached their maximum potential. Such a paradigm became entrenched as the post-World War II population surge of Baby Boomers ensured a ready supply of entry-level applicants eager to achieve upward career mobility. Today's workplace, however, faces a dilemma. The populations of Generations X and Y will be insufficient in numbers to fill the positions that will be left behind when today's Baby Boomers retire and leave the workplace. Such a reality calls for a new talent management model. Sharon Allen will discuss an exciting new innovation in career planning from Deloitte that will hold profound implications for every generation active in today's workforce — and tomorrow's. Sharon L. Allen is Chairman of the Board of Directors of Deloitte & Touche USA LLP (D&T USA). In this capacity, she is responsible for the governance of an organization with more than $10 billion in annual revenues and oversees the firm’s relationships with a number of major multinational clients. With more than 30 years of audit and consulting experience, Allen was elected as chairman of the board in 2003. Her re-election in 2007 was the latest achievement in a career of distinguished business leadership. She currently serves on the President’s Export Council and is a member of the Women’s Leadership Board at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard. Her responsibilities and influence extend beyond her U.S. leadership roles. She is a member of the Global Board of Directors of Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu, where she serves as the U.S. representative on the Global Governance Committee and chairs the Global Risk Management Committee. A frequent speaker on governance, diversity, ethics, and workplace issues, Allen has addressed such prestigious forums as Fortune Boardroom Reports, Forbes Executive Women’s Forum, The City Club of Cleveland, the Dallas Friday Group, and the UN Economic Development Fund. She also has addressed major business schools including those at Cornell, Notre Dame, Duke, the University of Illinois, the University of Southern California, and MIT. Allen has been honored for her contributions to business and community leadership. She has been twice-named to the Forbes list of “the 100 most powerful women in the worl.” In 2007, Directorship named her “one of the 100 most influential people in corporate governance” and Crain’s NY Business cited her as one of the most powerful business women in New York. In 2006, she was named Private Sector Woman of the Year by the Financial Women’s Association. She is a past designee as one of the “50 Women to Watch” by The Wall Street Journal and a “Woman of the Year” of the New York City Police Athletic League. She’s also earned the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce Distinguished Business Leader Award, and serves as a board member of the national board of the YMCA, The Autry National Center, and the United Way of Greater Los Angeles. Allen holds an honorary doctorate in Administrative Science from her alma mater, the University of Idaho.
