In this episode Hettie V. Williams is in conversation with Dr. Ben Railton about the concept of critical patriotism. Dr. Williams is the director of the Trotter Institute at UMass Boston and Railton is Professor of English Studies at Fitchburg State University a public institution in Fitchburg Massachusetts. He is also the author of Of Thee I Sing: The Contested History of American Patriotism (Rowman & Littlefield, 2021) in which he claims that there are four competing concepts of American patriotism including critical, active, mythic, and celebratory. Railton argues that critical patriotism is the type of patriotism operationalized to “move the nation closer to its ideals” through critique and highlighting the “nation's shortcomings” or flaws. African Americans he further contends have been central to this history of critical patriotism from the acts of Crispus Attucks during the American Revolution to the writings of James Baldwin in the mid-twentieth century. Railton identifies several Black Bostonians as practitioners of these four types of patriotism including Attucks, Phillis Wheatley, Elizabeth Freeman (MumBet), and David Walker. OF THEE I SING COMPOSER: George Gershwin LYRICIST: Ira Gershwin BOOK: George S. Kaufman, Morrie Ryskind DIRECTOR: George S. Kaufman CHOREOGRAPHER: Chester Hale PRINCIPLE CAST: William Gaxton (Wintergreen), Victor Moore (Throttlebottom), Lois Moran (Mary) OPENING DATE: Dec 26, 1931 CLOSING DATE: Jan 14, 1933 PERFORMANCES: 441 SYNOPSIS: John P Wintergreen is a presidential candidate who needs a wife. When a national contest is held to find a potential bride, Wintergreen is paired with America's sweetheart Diana Deveraux, but he soon realizes that he is in love with Mary Turner, the contest's organizer.   Of Thee I Sing is the result of George S. Kaufman and Morrie Ryskind's desire to write a musical satire with George and Ira Gershwin that could criticize the United States' political party system without being watered down for mainstream audiences. Apart from its satirical comedy, the musical is notable for the way the score and lyrics tie in closely with the rest of the libretto, its long stretches without songs aside from underscoring, and its early use of projection on the American stage. Additionally, this musical marks the first pairing of the theatrical team William Gaxton and Victor Moore. The show was an immediately popular success in its Boston tryout and subsequent New York run, earning praise from critics, audiences, and even the politicians evidently ridiculed by the storyline. Ultimately, Of Thee I Sing was recognized for its innovative achievements by becoming the first musical to win the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, a controversial decision which helped to elevate the artform of musical comedy and pave the way for more inventive musicals to follow. Laura Frankos outlines the ways Of Thee I Sing was a theatrical endeavor with a lasting impact. Laura Frankos is the author of The Broadway Musical Quiz Book (Applause Books, 2010). She is a regular contributor to CastAlbumReviews.com, and previously authored a blog on unusual musical theatre history, The Great White Wayback Machine. She has also written a mystery novel, St. Oswald's Niche, and short fiction in the science fiction and fantasy genres. Her latest novel, Broadway Revival (2022), has a time traveler curing Gershwin's tumor and altering the course of Golden Age Broadway. She lives in Los Angeles with her husband, novelist Harry Turtledove. This week, Scott, Karl, and Trent discuss George Gershwin, the celebrated American composer of Rhapsody in Blue, the opera Porgy and Bess, the Pulitzer Prize-winning musical Of Thee I Sing, and hundreds more songs that continue to be radiant examples of the Great American Songbook. Gershwin's compositional career began as a song plugger in Tin Pan Alley, progressed through the theatres of Broadway and the concert halls throughout the U.S., ending far too early in the starry heights of Hollywood's glory years in 1937. Karl says, "There’s a myth about Gershwin that he’s this untutored, unschooled rube who comes on the scene and then attempts to make classical music," which couldn't be further from the truth.  With his Rhapsody in Blue, Gershwin brings two competing genres of music together, creating something that lived in a world between jazz and classical. Trent believes this guy is the greatest melodist he has ever heard. Do you agree? Tune in for more music and ideas, brought to you by onlinegreatbooks.com.

John and John go WAY back to the 1930s and look at one of the Gershwin duo's finest works - "Of Thee I Sing". We talk about the absurdity of the plot and the comedy therein. One of the Johns expresses a long-hidden feeling of support for Ira, the forgotten Gershwin. Good times all around! Music by George Gershwin Lyrics by Ira Gershwin Book by Lloyd S. In another creator spotlight episode I am thrilled to chat to one of my personal comic heroes and a true comic book legend - John McCreaAn Eisner award winner who for over 30 years John has been producing work for the likes of Marvel, DC, Rebellion, and Image. Drawing characters from my personal favourite, Hitman (Tommy Monaghan) to the recent Dead Eyes, he's collaborated with writing legends such as Alan Grant, Gerry Duggan, and most famously Garth Ennis who he won the aforementioned Eisner with Hitman #34 - Of Thee I Sing.We discuss his career in comics, the art of commissions and teaching. In addition we learn about his Kickstarter campaign for 'The Mighty World of McCrea' which is shaping up to be an absolute blast!I had a great time chatting with John and I'm sure (like me) you'll really enjoy this episode especially hearing about the strangest commission he ever did! Show Links:John McCrea:https://www.johnmccrea.co.uk/https://twitter.com/mccreaman/https://www.instagram.com/mccreaman1/https://www.facebook.com/cromity KICKSTARTER: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/johnmccrea/the-mighty-world-of-mccrea Damian Edwardson:https://artninetwo.comwww.facebook.com/artninetwohttps://twitter.com/artninetwo https://instagram.com/artninetwo   See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

On this episode of Saturday Strategy, host Johnny Themans welcomes guest Lucy Key, Owner and Performance Director at Performing Perfectly, to speak about communication and how performance and business are connected. To clearly articulate our message to who we’re working with, we need to be able to use our voice and body language to communicate better and improve our chances of success in business. The two discuss the parallels of the world of performance and the world of business. Effective communication is essential for any business to succeed and when you communicate in an engaging way, you get the best results. Lucy explains how much of stage performance comes from being a natural and how much comes from learned skills. She details why knowing your audience and environment is so important and how to actively develop your skills in this area, including techniques such as breath work and filming yourself. Then, Lucy shares how remaining authentic and confident, especially when making mistakes, and not being too polished makes a huge difference when presenting to a group. Johnny and Lucy then discuss cultural stereotypes and prejudices toward voices, while exploring the importance of personal ‘blind spots’, constructive feedback, and pushing people outside of their comfort zones. About our Guest: Lucy is a professional actress who has worked in theatre, opera, television, concert and cabaret. After training at Guildford School of Acting, Lucy’s performance credits include: Maria in West Side Story, The Prince of Wales Theatre, London and UK No. 1 tour, Grace Farrel in Annie, Perth Repertory Theatre, Of Thee I Sing, The Bridewell Theatre, London, Midsummer Nights Dream and Two Gentlemen of Verona, Regents Park Open Air Theatre, London, The Marriage of Figaro, New Vic Theatre, The Birthday Party, Chichester Festival Theatre. Television credits include the role of Manda in Being April for BBC One. Lucy has also worked extensively as a performing arts tutor, choreographer, director and workshop practitioner. Along with her husband, Chris, she directs Key Theatre Academy and Performing Perfectly. Directing and choreography credits include numerous projects with Leaps and Bounds, including The Young Roots Presentation at The Birmingham Hippodrome, choreographer for The Olympic Handover celebrations in Shropshire and Assistant Director on the world premiere of the musical Chasing Fate at The Birmingham Hippodrome. Lucy is Performance Director at Key Theatre Academy and Performing Perfectly. The Pulitzer’s lineage shows a healthy appreciation for turning a mirror on society. And just like Of Thee I Sing and How To Succeed, Hamilton uses humor to portray many of the serious issues facing our nation’s creation and governance - both in the 1700s and today. Rarely has an ensemble been so visible as they are in Hamilton. The term “Ensemble of Principals” has been used to describe the cast and for good reason: every track in the 11 member ensemble is highly unique and memorable.  Learn more about your ad choices.
