Omaima shares her story in which she explains how she first got into cricket in a part of the world where there wasn't much on offer at the time for girls: Canada. She goes on to describe how her love for the game develops and how she came up with the idea of establishing the first Women's league in Calgary before taking a leading role in coaching the next generation of female cricketers in Calgary after doing her first ICC Coaching badge. In November 1991, the world was thrust into shock and disbelief as the gruesome details of a heinous crime unfolded before them. At the center of this horrifying tale stood Omaima Nelson, a former Egyptian-born model, whose appalling choices ultimately drew comparisons to notorious figures like Jeffrey Dahmer. On the heels of suffering unimaginable abuse and violence as a child, Omaima's adult life was marked by a spectacle of dismemberment, cannibalism, and grotesque behavior that left both investigators and the public in a state of absolute disbelief. Intriguing, horrifying, and deeply unsettling, this disturbing case is considered one of the most gruesome crimes ever committed in Orange County, California. On December 2nd 1991,Costa Mesa CA police arrested 23 year old Egyptian former model Omaima Nelson for the murder of her 56 year old husband Bill. Omaima had confessed to a former boyfriend on December 1st when she showed up at his home with a suitcase of unidentifiable body parts. Investigators were immediately sent to the Nelson residence, and while they didn't expect the scene to be neat and tidy or even easy to stomach, they couldn't possibly have prepared themselves for what they found. It didn't look like a crime of passion had occurred, It looked like a cannibal's test kitchen. After a childhood experience of watching her father rush to the aid of car accident victims, Omaima envisioned a future where medics and first-time responders would be equipped with critical tools to aid in saving lives. Her mission was to fight blood shortage in Africa by introducing blood drives that would facilitate providing accurate medical data/diagnosis in emergency cases. In 2020, these efforts were halted by the COVID-19 pandemic and further hindered by social and political disparities in her homeland of Morocco. In the episode, Omaima walks us through her journey of self-criticism, understanding the importance of self-reliance, and taking ownership of our narrative on the African continent to create solutions to our own challenges. Omaima Nelson was born into intense poverty in Cairo Egypt where she, at the age of seven, was forced to endure female g*nital mutilation. This forever shaped her life. She went on to marry a rich man and fled to the US. They divorced shortly after. She worked as a model, doing what she could to survive until she met 'larger than life' Bill Nelson. After fighting all during a drive to and from visiting Bill's family at Thanksgiving, Omaima snapped and killed him. She then proceeded to cannibalize his remains. Q&A Discussion Circle with the Imam -- Dr. Omaima Abou Bakr answers an important question that had been weighing on a congregant's mind for years regarding Qur'an verse 2:282. A lively discussion ensues between congregants and past khateebahs on the many different ways we can interpret the call for two women witnesses. Dr. Omaima also shares insights on what gender justice work is happening now in Egypt, as well as the upcoming khutbah anthology she originally wrote her khutbah for -- but never realized she would have an opportunity to deliver in a mosque -- until now.

Becca may rethink her family’s tradition of eating ribs on Thanksgiving after this case. Omaima Nelson and her new husband, Bill, should have been basking in newlywed bliss, cooking and eating their first holiday meal together. Unfortunately, Bill ended up on the table with the cranberry sauce and stuffing. Omaima claims she killed in self defense and only cooked Bill to hide evidence, but she also said his ribs were comparable to those she’d had at Texas barbecue joints, which doesn’t seem like the kind of thing someone who didn’t cannibalize their husband would say. In this episode, my dear friend Omaima leads us on her journey towards finding gainful employment. She explores the themes of depression and low self esteem that plague her on the journey. Inasmuch as the story doesn’t have a happy ending yet, she tries to stay upbeat as much as is possible given the circumstances. I give my two cents and further explore some topics she touches on.
