La Syrie fait face à son été le plus sec depuis 60 ans. Les pertes en blé sont massives : environ 75% des terres cultivables sont touchées d'après l'ONU, ce qui menace la sécurité alimentaire de plus de 16 millions de personnes. Dans la région de Deraa, l'une des plus agricoles du pays, les barrages sont à sec et les agriculteurs inquiets.  De notre envoyée spéciale de retour de Deraa, Le barrage d'Ibta ne ressemble plus qu'à un cratère calciné : une coulée de sable, des crevasses, des fissures et tout autour, des champs brûlés. Avec les années, les agriculteurs sont tous partis, raconte Yaza, 19 ans, jeune berger comme son père et son grand-père avant lui. « Cette année, c'est pire que tout. Nous n'avons plus assez d'eau, plus assez de plantes pour nourrir nos moutons », témoigne-t-il. En un an, son troupeau a été décimé. Il a perdu la moitié de ses moutons, qui meurent un à un.  Dans la région de Deraa, tout le monde vous le dira : en 60 ans, il n'y a jamais eu de pénurie d'eau d'une telle ampleur. La faute à un hiver sans précipitations, aux effets du changement climatique, mais aussi, dans le sud du pays, aux incursions israéliennes qui s'emparent des ressources stratégiques en eau. Avant sa chute, le régime a soigneusement pillé les puits et conduits d'eau des quartiers et villes révolutionnaires, compliquant aujourd'hui l'irrigation des terres, mais aussi celle des villes, jusqu'à la capitale, Damas.  Avec son association Al-Seeraj, Kinan Al Kudsi, franco-syrien, s'est donné la mission de réhabiliter les 22 puits de la banlieue sud de Damas : « On estime que rien qu'à Damas, 500 puits ne fonctionnent pas. » Dans le bureau du centre de pompage, la plupart des panneaux électriques sont encore éteints. Coût du projet : 150 000 dollars. « ​​​​​​​L'État ne nous donne pas les fonds nécessaires. Mais si tu veux reconstruire le pays, la première chose, c'est de reconstruire le système d'eau... », poursuit-il. Tout à coup, la pluie tombe. Au milieu de la chaleur de l'été – quelque 48°C –, tout le monde se rue dehors. Thirteen million Syrians - half the population - left their homes during their country's 13-year civil war. Seven million were internally displaced. Six million fled abroad. Bringing them home is perhaps the biggest challenge facing Syria's new rulers. But many can't return, because their homes are in ruins, and jobs and essential services are lacking. Tim Whewell follows a variety of returnees back to Homs, Syria's third city, which saw some of the worst destruction of the war. A private charity organises convoys of families wanting to return from camps in the north of the country. But once returnees like Fatima Hazzoura get back, they're left to cope on their own. Some who came back earlier have managed to repair their homes. But others find their houses are just empty, burnt-out shells. Meanwhile, some in Homs who stayed throughout the war - members of the Alawite minority, whose neighbourhoods remained intact - are thinking of leaving now, fearful that the new government of former Islamist rebels will not protect them. And Homs people who made new lives abroad are hesitant to return permanently while the situation is so unstable , and the economy still crippled by international sanctions. Can the fabric of an ancient and diverse city be rebuilt? Tim finds grief and fear among the ruins - but also laughter, and flashes of Homs's famous humour. Der Publizist und Politikwissenschaftler ist gebürtiger Palästinenser und lebt seit rund 60 Jahren in Deutschland. Aref Hajjaj musste als Kind mit seiner Familie seine Heimatstadt Jaffa verlassen. Dieser Schmerz der Vertreibung bleibe haften, auch wenn er sich heute in Deutschland wohl fühle. Das palästinensische Leid werde oft nicht anerkannt, er sieht im Diskurs über den Nahen Osten zuweilen eine Hierarchie der Opferwahrnehmung. Und dennoch bleibt er optimistisch: er glaubt an eine Lösung des Konflikts. Seine Vision ist ein gemeinsamer Staat für Israeli und Palästinenser, nach Schweizer Vorbild. Hajjaj ist mit einer Schweizerin verheiratet und überzeugt vom hiesigen föderalistischen System.

Naomi Shihab Nye talked about her books ‘The Turtle of Oman' and ‘The Turtle of Michigan. The books are about Aref as he travels from Muscat, Oman, to Ann Arbor, Michigan.Naomi Shihab Nye was born in St. Louis, Missouri. Her father was a Palestinian refugee and her mother an American of German and Swiss descent, and Nye spent her adolescence in both Jerusalem and San Antonio, Texas. She earned her BA from Trinity University in San Antonio. Nye is the recipient of numerous honors and awards for her work, including the Ivan Sandrof Award for Lifetime Achievement from the National Book Critics Circle, the Lavan Award, the Paterson Poetry Prize, the Carity Randall Prize, the Isabella Gardner Poetry Award, the Lee Bennett Hopkins Poetry award, the Robert Creeley Prize, and many Pushcart Prizes. She has received fellowships from the Lannan Foundation, the Guggenheim Foundation, and she was a Witter Bynner Fellow. From 2010 to 2015 she served as a Chancellor of the Academy of American Poets. In 2018 she was awarded the Lon Tinkle Award for Lifetime Achievement from the Texas Institute of Letters. Aref Dostyar works with the Afghan government to help craft policies to create lasting peace. He has been part of several national, regional, and international initiatives for peace in his country. Additionally, he supports young Afghans who envision an inclusive & open society. He is also passionate about education for kids, particularly those who have been internally displaced due to conflict.
