When the Philippines fell to the Japanese in the spring of 1942, tens of thousands of American and Filipino troops became POWs. Approximately 1 in 3 (possibly more) of the Americans did not survive captivity. Their treatment by their captors and their limited access to medical care/supplies is often highlighted by historians. To discuss this in more depth and to highlight the experiences of US Army medical personnel held captive in the Philippines, Andy Watson, Chief of the U.S. Army Medical Department Center of History and Heritage, joined the MacArthur Memorial Podcast. By Andy Watson- From London in the United Kingdom. At the age of 46, and with the UK in lockdown I was watching my already large frame rapidly gain weight, reduced exercise and easy access to the fridge were beginning to take their toll. Having had some reasonable success switching to a plant-based diet a few years previously I was still too heavy and wasn't losing anymore. I had resigned myself to the fact I was always going to be big and was resigned to the health issues that were related to this. I have always been big. There have been times where I have lost significant amounts of weight, but this has been following a regime of huge calorie deficit and lots of exercise and ultimately not maintainable and the weight has slowly returned. I have run marathons and done Ironman events. Having been diagnosed with depression 6 years ago, my life had felt like a struggle, with it feeling as though I was simply dragging myself through the day and through life. My knees were painful, and I couldn't walk down the stairs properly. I had also developed psoriasis on my fingers which was painful and unsightly. I heard about IF from the Gin Stephens and Melanie Avalon “The intermittent fasting podcast”. I have no idea why I had downloaded it, or why I decided to listen on my dog walk. I am so glad I did, I started fasting immediately. It was the 13th May 2020 and I weighed 115.6KG I had total faith that the process was going to work. I have lost 40kg and gone from clothing size xxxl to small. I have slowly tweaked my window, the foods that I eat, the timing of my fast, I am now settled on 22/2 omad. I weigh myself daily. I can walk down the stairs, my psoriasis has gone, and my mood has lifted significantly, I feel happy, I am confident. I can think and concentrate, I feel fantastic. Heaviest weight 133kg 294lb Starting weight 115.6 kg 255lb Current Weight 75 Kg 165ib Goal Weight 75 kg 165lb Weight Lost 40 Kg 88lb Andy. In this episode, Andy Watson and I pick the Premier League's worst XI of the last decade.

We are talking about how good Liverpool are and the lad's trip to the Kop. Kenneth and Jimmy join me to talk about the MacGregor fight and where his next moves will be.
"Renaissance Man" is a big tag to apply to anyone but in Andy's case it is completely justified. I have had the pleasure of knowing Andy for over 20 years and he is a remarkable man in so many ways. Of Maltese/Welsh parentage he grew up in New Zealand before returning to the UK to go to Cambridge to study Maths & Physics. The proud father of two children , he is a self-confessed Physics & Astronomy geek with two masters degrees in AI who also happens to love Rugby (The All Blacks) and Football (Manchester United), as well as Shakespeare, Keats and, as you will hear , a host of great music and books. Being diminutive is not a barrier to Andy's action man tendencies and last year he completed a 1500 Km spiritual and very physical journey on the Camino De Santiago. As this episode launches, he will be making the final preparation for a two-month sailing adventure through some of the most challenging waters in the world. Retirement is clearly suiting him! In amongst all of that Andy makes some great musical choices and then tells a series of moving , powerful, stories that will forever change the way I listen to these songs. I can’t think of a better way to start the new series and this is an episode to savour! Full versions of all Andy's choices, as well as other artists and songs referenced in the episode, can be found her https://open.spotify.com/playlist/4vI9m5nZCc76Td3thor6A2?si=aKoxwCNFS2u_hCqiJO3B9A
