Lieutenant Colonel John Lassiter is a retired Air Force Aerospace Engineer who has worked on a variety of aircraft in his long career, including the F-15 fighter and the C-130 aircraft. Lassiter worked for nearly 30 years at NASA/Marshall Space Flight Center in the Test Laboratory, where he supported numerous programs such as the Space Shuttle and Space Launch System, conducting structural dynamic and fluid dynamic testing. I Have Been Inside Area 51Area 51 has spawned more conspiracy theories than perhaps any other military facility in the world. Here's what we know (and don't know) about this secret U.S. military installation.What we know about Area 51:Area 51 is a U.S. Air Force military installation located at Groom Lake in southern Nevada.Area 51 is an active military installation. It is administered by Edwards Air Force Base in southern California.Area 51 is not accessible to the public and is under 24-hour surveillance.The only confirmed use of the installation is as a flight-testing facility.During World War II (1939–45) the U.S. Army Air Corps used the site as an aerial gunnery range.In 1955 the area was selected by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) as a testing site for the Lockheed U-2, a high-altitude reconnaissance aircraft. Pres. Dwight D. Eisenhower (1953–61) authorized the testing, which was to be conducted under the code name Project AQUATONE. Testing began in July 1955.After the U-2 was put into service in 1956, Area 51 was used to develop other aircraft, including the A-12 (also known as OXCART) reconnaissance plane and the stealth fighter F-117 Nighthawk.In 1989 a man named Robert (“Bob”) Lazar claimed he worked on extraterrestrial technology inside Area 51. Lazar told Las Vegas television reporter George Knapp that he saw autopsy photographs of aliens inside the facility and that the U.S. government used the facility to examine recovered alien spacecraft. I Have Been Inside Area 51Area 51 has spawned more conspiracy theories than perhaps any other military facility in the world. Here's what we know (and don't know) about this secret U.S. military installation.What we know about Area 51:Area 51 is a U.S. Air Force military installation located at Groom Lake in southern Nevada.Area 51 is an active military installation. It is administered by Edwards Air Force Base in southern California.Area 51 is not accessible to the public and is under 24-hour surveillance.The only confirmed use of the installation is as a flight-testing facility.During World War II (1939–45) the U.S. Army Air Corps used the site as an aerial gunnery range.In 1955 the area was selected by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) as a testing site for the Lockheed U-2, a high-altitude reconnaissance aircraft. TD Barnes started in the US Army in the 1950s as a radar and intelligence officer.  Because he had special skills in monitoring high-speed and high-altitude aircraft, NASA hired him to work on the X-15 - the aircraft flown by astronauts and test pilots prior to going into space. This weekly 30-minute program, sponsored by the Title Insurance and Trust Company of Los Angeles, attempted to recreate the spirit and times of the ranchos and vaqueros in Southern California when the way of life was considerably different. Although hewing to a strict storyline, the show nevertheless also was able to supply considerable descriptive colour to the manner of life in those days. For example, the listener may learn of the customs by which the master of the house is waited upon by his wife at all meals and that she and the rest of the family may not partake until the head of the rancho has finished. The commercials, too, proceeded along similar lines, recollecting that in the period being dramatized there were but a few parcels of land and those were of tremendous size, owned by wealthy individuals. Now there are over 2,000,000 separate parcels of land in Los Angeles County alone.
