SUBCRIBE TO READING THE CITYOrder Tyler Wetherall's novel AmphibianAbout Reading the City "Reading the City" is a weekly newsletter of bookish events in and around NYC, a weekly diary of upcoming New York literary life on a need-to-know basis. No long blurbs, no reviews, just book events of all stripes. "Reading the City" links to the author's books, website, or social pages when possible. Tyler Wetherall, the founder and editor, is a believer in the  power of the literary community to raise each other up, champion one another, and help make the site an inclusive and welcoming space for all writers and readers. Tyler Wetherall is a  Brooklyn-based writer, editor, and teacher, and the author of No Way Home: A Memoir of Life on the Run (St. Martin's Press) and Amphibian (forthcoming from Virago).   She arrived in New York from London in 2014, knowing just three people. She  carried with her a manuscript she had  written alone in a Victorian outhouse at the end of her mother's garden in Devon. Her entire experience of the writerly life thus far was solitary—and pretty cold. She found herself in a  very special place called the Oracle Club (RIP) in Long Island City, and there  she met real life authors for the first time. After staying up late and  talking craft, drinking gin, and playing records, or reading poetry and howling into the night, she had  found her community, and through that community the practical and intellectual resources she needed to become an author myself. Photo credit:  Sammy DeighElizabeth Howard, Producer and Host of the Short Fuse Podcast Elizabeth Howard is the producer and host of the Short Fuse Podcast, conversations with artists, writers, musicians, and others whose art reveals our communities through their lens and stirs us to seek change. The publication's over 70 freelance critics (many of them with decades of experience) cover dance, film, food, literature, music, television, theater, video games, and visual arts. There is a robust readership for arts coverage that believes that culture matters. The goal of The Arts Fuse is to treat the arts seriously, to write about them in the same way that other publications cover politics, sports, and business — with professionalism, thoughtfulness, and considerable attitude. The magazine's motto, from Jonathan Swift, sums up our editorial stance: “Use the point of your pen … not the feather.” The Arts Fuse has published over 7,000 articles and receives 60,000+ visits a month. This year they are celebrating their 5th birthday, a milestone for a small, independent magazine dedicated to covering the arts. Why The Arts Fuse? Its birth was a reaction to the declining arts coverage in newspapers, magazines, radio, and television. When the number of news pages shrink in the mainstream media, attention is paid. But the continual whittling down of arts coverage has been passed over in silence. Editor-in-Chief Bill Marx started the magazine to preserve the craft of professional arts criticism online, while also looking at new and innovative ways to evolve the cultural conversation and bring together critics, readers, and artists.Serious criticism, by talking about the strengths, weaknesses, and contributions of the arts, plays an indispensable role in the cultural ecology. Smaller, newer organizations need a response. When they are ignored as they are by the mainstream media, they fail to gain an audience. And without an audience, they fold, further weakening the entire ecosystem.Assist The Arts Fuse in their  mission: to keep arts and culture hale and hearty through dialogue rather than marketing.SUBSCRIBE to the weekly e-newsletterLIKE The Arts Fuse on Facebook, FOLLOW  on TwitterHELP  The Arts Fuse thrive by providing underwriting for the magazine. This week, we're joined by Nicole Clark, founder and CEO of Trellis, a state trial court research and analytics platform. For several years, Nicole was an attorney in private practice, handling business litigation and labor and employment matters. The idea for Trellis came from her experience doing research for complicated summary judgement motions. Nicole worked with software developers on an early version of the tool, collecting state trial court data and creating an extensive database of tentative rulings issued by judges in Southern California. As Nicole's practice flourished from using the database, she decided to turn it into a scalable legal analytics platform that would help democratize access for state trial court data. Outside of her work at Trellis, Nicole shares everything she has learned over the years about legal analytics with other legal professionals by authoring articles for ABA Journal, New York Law Journal, Texas Lawyer, and Santa Barbara Lawyer. She is also regularly featured as a legal expert in Southern California Record, and has appeared as a guest on podcasts produced by Above the Law and Corporate Counsel Business Journal. In our discussion, Nicole spoke about her transition from practicing law to developing Trellis, her experience starting college at 16, how lawyer engagement with tech has changed in recent years, and her advice for those considering making a leap to business.

The Swans of Harlem: Five Black Ballerinas, Fifty Years of Sisterhood, and the Reclamation of Their Groundbreaking History   By:  Karen ValbyThe forgotten story of a pioneering group of five Black ballerinas, the first principals in the Dance Theatre of Harlem, who traveled the world as highly celebrated stars in their field and whose legacy was erased from history until now.At the height of the Civil Rights movement, Lydia Abarça was a Black prima ballerina with a major international dance company—the Dance Theatre of Harlem. She was the first Black ballerina on the cover of Dance magazine, an Essence cover star, cast in The Wiz  and on Broadway with Bob Fosse. She performed in some of ballet's most iconic works with her closest friends—founding members of the company, the Swans of Harlem, Gayle McKinney, Sheila Rohan, Marcia Sells, and Karlya Shelton—for the Queen of England and Mick Jagger, with Josephine Baker, at the White House, and beyond. Some forty years later, when Lydia's granddaughter wanted to show her own ballet class evidence of her grandmother's success, she found almost none, but for some yellowing photographs and programs in the family basement. Lydia had struggled for years to reckon with the erasure of her success, as all the Swans had. Still united as sisters in the present, they decided it was time to share their story themselves.Captivating, rich in vivid detail and character, and steeped in the glamor and grit of professional ballet, The Swans of Harlem  is a riveting account of five extraordinarily accomplished women, a celebration of their historic careers, and a window into the robust history of Black ballet, hidden for too long. During Covid, five ballerinas met weekly on Zoom and formed the 152nd Street Black Ballet Legacy Council. Karen Valby joined them and wrote their story “Karen Valby's The Swans of Harlem brings to life the stories of Black dancers whose contributions to the world of ballet were silenced, marginalized, and otherwise erased. Karen introduces readers to important figures of our past, while inspiring us to courageously chase our dreams.”Misty Copeland“These five original Dance Theatre of Harlem ballerinas fell in love with an art form that most of America believed was white and should remain so. Upon Arthur Mitchell's founding of an all-Black company in 1969, they eagerly took their places at the barre and challenged themselves to the utmost. They triumphed. ALAN FEIGENBAUM is an experienced matrimonial and family law attorney whose prime focus is the maximization of his clients' long-term, post-divorce, emotional capital. Alan assists a diverse range of professionals and their spouses, including business owners, lawyers, investors, and entertainers, on their family law matters, with a notable focus on evaluating the optimal strategies to manage and resolve complex financial and custody disputes. He is well-versed in managing agreements (separation, prenuptial, and postnuptial) to create a framework for his clients' futures, and approaches dispute resolution with an eye toward facilitating cooperation and reducing conflict, making every effort to settle cases out of court. Understanding that divorce can affect the trajectory of a person's life, Alan focuses on his clients' long-term financial and familial best interests. His multifaceted approach has included: Working with financial experts to identify and define the scope of assets acquired by a spouse before the marriage, thereby eliminating litigation over whether those assets are part of the marital pot; Resolving the disposition of a spouse's interest in a business without resorting to a pro forma approach that assumes complex valuation of that interest is always required; Reaching agreement on the payment of expenses while a divorce action is pending, without the need for costly, interim support motion practice; Negotiating interim parenting schedules by empowering parents and not substituting attorney judgment for that of the parents; Settling contentious custody disputes without involving court-appointed professionals, sparing the family from the potentially lasting effects of domestic relations litigation; and Prioritizing the value clients place on financial independence both during and after the divorce action concludes, including in the case of the nonmonied spouse evaluating the financially feasibility of retaining the marital home. Alan also has significant courtroom experience, including first-chair trial experience in domestic relations matters and, at an early stage in his career, examining witnesses before the U.S. International Trade Commission. He also speaks and writes frequently on matters of family law. Alan is a regular contributing columnist for the New York Law Journal on matters of divorce law. For his pro bono work at the firm, Alan is a volunteer discharge upgrade attorney for The Veterans Consortium. Roberta “Robbie” Kaplan successfully argued before the Supreme Court of the United States on behalf of LGBTQ rights activist Edith Windsor, in United States v. Windsor, a landmark decision that invalidated a section of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) requiring the federal government to recognize marriages of same-sex couples. Kaplan went on to author Then Comes Marriage: United States v. Windsor and the Defeat of DOMA, chosen by the Los Angeles Times as one of the top 10 books of 2015. Kaplan currently leads some of the country's highest-profile commercial and public interest litigation, from suing the neo-Nazis behind the violence in Charlottesville to representing E. Jean Carroll, Mary Trump and investors in ACN in lawsuits against Donald Trump. Kaplan left Big Law to found Kaplan Hecker & Fink in 2017 as a new kind of law firm blending a high-stakes commercial and white-collar practice with a fundamental commitment to public interest cases centered on values of inclusion, equity and justice. The firm is majority women- and LGBTQ+-owned and more than 75 percent of its attorneys identify as women, people of color and/or LGBTQ+. KHF takes on groundbreaking, precedent-setting cases that not only advance the public interest, but have a significant impact beyond the courtroom – especially for women and other marginalized groups. In pioneering this new kind of boutique law firm, Kaplan has redefined the traditional concept of “pro bono” by taking on important matters – both to the firm and the public – and ensuring they are at the core of the firm's practice. Kaplan has been widely recognized for her impact and leadership, including the New York State Bar Association's Gold Medal Award and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the New York Law Journal, which also named her Attorney of the Year in 2020. Kaplan was also named Litigator of the Year by The American Lawyer and Most Innovative Lawyer of the Year by The Financial Times. In addition to an A.B. from Harvard College (magna cum laude) and a J.D. from Columbia Law School – where she teaches a seminar on advanced civil procedure – Kaplan holds honorary doctorates from Johns Hopkins University and the Jewish Theological Seminary, among others. Do you want to know what your deepest divorce Super Power is? Of course you do! Take my brand new quiz and discover more about yourself and the super power you possess that will take you through divorce into your dream life. https://thedivorcerehab.com/quiz-start-site-podcast For a woman from a household with two incomes or a wife relying on their former spouse as the breadwinner — going through a divorce can be downright horrifying. What happens when you think you are left with "nothing"?  Join me in this powerful episode with Certified Divorce Financial Analyst, Lisa Zeiderman, who shares valuable nuggets to help you address your finances with less stress.  ▶️ How to Navigate Complex Financial Issues and Find Empowerment Through Your Finances with Lisa Zeiderman. ✔️ As a matrimonial attorney, CFL, and a Certified Divorce Financial Analyst, Lisa Zeiderman shares her inspiring origin story of helping women and families go through a divorce. After getting into the fashion business at 18, she survived a divorce and custody case. "What most people find frustrating is a lack of responsiveness. I experienced the same with my attorneys. The client needs to feel we have their back. I decided then that I could be helpful to people. And so that's why I ended up going to law school." ✔️ There's so much emotion tied to divorce when divorce is a business transaction, yet we bring that emotional piece into it, especially regarding our finances. Lisa shares that women need to be reassured that they can go through the process less stressed. In consultations, two main issues must be addressed: custody of the children and finances.  ✔️ Achieving a less complicated divorce process and a rewarding future requires setting reasonable expectations as early as possible. Divorce is hard, but you must be kinder to yourself and allow others to come in and give you the strong support you need.  ✔️ No matter what the situation, divorce disputes are resolvable. People have to realize that it is a marathon and not a sprint. Lisa establishes that the lack of understanding makes divorce scary and way more stressful for many women. Her essential piece of advice: don't let that fear control YOU. Resources and services are available to help you start separating the emotion from the financial element of divorce. ✔️ Do not do divorce by yourself. You want reliable and credible people in your corner, explaining the law, the finances, and the psychological aspects of the divorce process. It would be best if you had a passionate and empathetic team who has your best intentions in their mind. Are you clamming up pursuing your legal separation, or are you ready to open the door for better resolution and positive outcomes?  Let us come to your rescue and make this divorce your life's most significant gift.  ______________________________________________________________ Lisa Zeiderman is Managing Partner at Miller Zeiderman LLP, based in New York. As an active member of the legal and cybersecurity community, he is a member of the Board of Editors for Cybersecurity Law and Strategy, has written over 90 articles, regularly appears in podcasts and webinars, and has spoken at over 50 conferences.  In this episode… When it comes to hiring, data privacy and security companies aren't sure what to look for in candidates. Similarly, professionals are struggling to understand businesses' qualifications and gain the skills needed for each discipline. With so much variability surrounding hiring practices, how can organizations maintain clarity to attract and retain top talent? Privacy and security staffing expert Jared Coseglia says that companies need to develop robust, transparent, and simple privacy and security programs. This demonstrates that you recognize your business' requirements and can assess the market effectively. Some companies have employed AI technology to streamline the hiring process. Yet, this raises representation issues, so Jared says it's crucial to utilize this technology to enhance diversity and provide candidates with an inclusive experience.  In today's episode of She Said Privacy/He Said Security, Jodi and Justin Daniels chat with Jared Coseglia about hiring and staffing trends in privacy and security. Jared talks about how companies can attract and retain privacy talent, AI's role in the hiring process, and compensation in privacy versus security.

Joy is a foremost expert on elder abuse and developing evidence-based screening protocols in long term care. Learn about her role spearheading spiritual engagement, and why connecting to something bigger is critical for happiness and well-being. About Joy Joy is the Vice President of Elder Justice and Spiritual Engagement at RiverSpring Living, and Director and Managing Attorney of The Weinberg Center for Elder Justice at the Hebrew Home at Riverdale. Joy co-founded The Weinberg Center in 2004. She was previously Director of Elder Abuse Services at the Pace Women's Justice Center and an Assistant District Attorney in Manhattan, where she served for eight years. Joy is a frequent speaker and writer on the issue of elder abuse and elder justice, including to the United States Senate, Special Commission on Aging. Screening for elder abuse detection in health care and legal systems has been a priority for Joy. In addition to developing evidence-based screening protocols in long-term care, Weinberg Center Risk and Abuse Prevention Screen (WC-RAPS), she recently co-authored and published two research papers relating to evidence-based screening for elder abuse. Joy's work in long-term care also includes an active role in the creation of sexual expression policies for residents, a resilience/well-being program for caregivers, and a fresh look at death and dying in long-term care. Joy also developed a unique domestic violence prevention and intervention program for all employees of the Hebrew Home at Riverdale. Like the Weinberg Center itself and many of its innovative projects, this program is easily replicable. Joy was a founder of the Elder Abuse Committee on the Elder Law Section of the New York State Bar Association. In 2017, Joy was awarded the National Crime Victims Service Award by the United States Department of Justice. In 2016, she was recognized with an award of Distinction in Public Service by the New York Law Journal, and in 2010 she received The New York State Bar Association award for Excellence in Public Service. Joy is also a certified ISHTA yoga instructor and teacher of breathing and meditation. Key Takeaways One out of ten older adults experience abuse in their lifetime. Most of the perpetrators are family members. Financial exploitation is the most prevalent form of abuse. Elder abuse shelters work well in long-term care communities because they are built around the needs of older people. At River Spring Living the shelter is “virtual” and integrated into the community at large. The SPRiNG Alliance, a network of regional elder abuse shelters, does extensive outreach and training to help communities start shelters. It is important to have conversations about end-of-life and long-term planning. As a culture we are too scared to talk about death and the dying process. Older people need to express themselves spiritually and connect to something bigger than themselves. It is a critical component of happiness and well-being. Part of spiritual engagement is getting out in nature.

Lisa Zeiderman and Disagreements Between the ExesSpouses often have disagreements, but it's more complicated when they get divorced. How do co-parents sort out plans when they disagree on things like getting your child vaccinated? Is there a standard position from the courts? Or do judges' personal opinions come into play? And in the end, how much do you want to spend to make a decision like this?Modern times come with complicated discussions. On today's episode, matrimonial attorney, CFL, and Certified Divorce Financial Analyst Lisa Zeiderman is here to help us navigate the complicated landscape of mental health issues, disagreements about today's big issues and more. Sometimes, the problem isn't a disagreement after divorce. Sometimes it's the changes people go through over time that leads to the divorce. You're not the same person you were when you married. Everyone evolves, and sometimes, people don't evolve together. But disagreements may rise after the divorce because you no longer have to choose which battles to pick – you can take them all on if you want. There's no need to compromise anymore. Janet Falk is a writer, speaker, and consultant with over 30 years of experience in public relations and marketing communications. Through her company, Falk Communications and Research, she helps attorneys, executives, and firms stand out in the market. Janet leads workshops and advises on media relations, websites, LinkedIn profiles, articles, nonlegal industry trade publications, and client newsletters, among other areas. She has published articles on media relations and marketing in the New York Law Journal, the New Jersey Law Journal, and Marketing the Law Firm. Janet is also a frequent speaker on webinars and podcasts about public relations and legal marketing. Janet advises attorneys at solo and small law firms on media relations and marketing communications so that they can attract new clients, remain top of mind with prior clients, keep in touch with referral sources, help recruit associates, generate a news story about litigation that puts pressure on opposing counsel, and achieve business goals. One of the major components that can help firms thrive in these areas is knowing how to deal with reporters. That's why Janet is on a mission to help attorneys gain visibility, get in touch with reporters, and craft a memorable message that will make them the go-to lawyer for big news stories. In this episode… Why would an attorney want to be in the news? Beyond the immediate gain of being in front of your potential client, getting in the news can help you keep in touch with referral sources, recruit employees, advocate for a cause, and prove that you're an expert on a given topic. So how can you situate yourself as the go-to lawyer reporters want to call?  According to Janet Falk, attorneys have to think about the reporter's audience. This is crucial if you want reporters to continuously use you as a source. Additionally, you want to be memorable and quotable. But how? Janet breaks it down into the “four A's:” acronym, analogy, anecdote, and alliteration. You have to be creative in your remarks to a reporter, and providing visuals, a story, or any one of the “four A's” will give them something that they can latch onto and turn into a compelling account for their audiences.  In this episode of The Lawyer's Edge Podcast, Elise Holtzman is joined by Janet Falk, consultant, writer, and speaker at Falk Communications and Research, to talk about strategies for dealing with reporters and getting in the news. Janet details how to identify and contact reporters, the best ways to shape your media profile, tips for dealing with spontaneous reporter calls, and why it's crucial to keep the reporter's audience top of mind throughout the process.

She writes articles on the subject of business development for publications such as the New York Law Journal and Law360. She is also the host of The Lawyer's Edge Podcast. In this episode… Building a successful business requires managing many key pieces, from handling finances to tackling sales and marketing, hiring and managing employees, and scaling the business. However, no one can be an expert in all of these areas — regardless of how smart they are. So what should growing entrepreneurs do? According to Elise Holtzman, this is where having a coach or mentor comes into play. Connecting and learning from a mentor who has gone through similar challenges is invaluable. It helps business owners network with like-minded people, grow both personally and professionally, and learn how to take on uncomfortable situations. In this episode of the Lead Like A Woman Show, Andrea Heuston is joined by Elise Holtzman, the Founder of The Lawyer's Edge, to talk about the importance of coaching and working with a mentor. Elise shares her journey to entrepreneurship, her secret to success, and the value of networking with like-minded people. Stay tuned.
