Michael Patris has always had an interest in history. Whether collecting antiques, collecting and working on antique cars, or restoring a 1923 California bungalow in Alhambra, pieces of the past always seemed too important to brush aside. After several years working in the news and film industries, Michael speaks publicly about Southern California transportation, collecting antiques, and Mount Lowe.Michael is the President and founder of the Mount Lowe Preservation Society, Inc., President of the Pacific Electric Railway Historical Society, and past Sheriff of the Los Angeles Corral of Westerners (2010). Michael is also President and owner of Golden West Books, a publishing company focusing on the history of trains, trolleys, railroads, and locomotive material. One of Michael's most well-known projects is a Mount Lowe trilogy, beginning with Mount Lowe Railway, part of the History of Rail series for Arcadia Publishing. This came out in June 2007 and is already in its ninth printing. The Barnes and Noble book signing was sold out in an hour and a half, a record for their chain. In October 2010, another book for Arcadia Publishing Mount Lowe, part of their Postcard Series, came out. More recently, two more books for Arcadia Publishing have just come out, both co-authored by Michael Patris and Steve Crise, Pacific Electric Railway, Then and Now(December 2011) and Mount Lowe, Then and Now. (February 2012) Michael's current projects include (sometime soon) another collaboration with Steve Crise on the Los Angeles Railway, Then and Now, and perhaps a book on Los Angeles Union Station featuring photos and collectibles rarely seen from this local landmark. After wanting to share his passion for the Mount Lowe Incline Railway and Thaddeus Lowe, the man who was the leading force behind its creation, it was a natural progression to set up the non-profit Mount Lowe Preservation Society educational foundation back in 2000, which fueled the renovation of a 14,000 square foot building in Pasadena to house our collections and archives permanently. This has led to the archives of the Pacific Electric Railway Historical Society being donated to the Mount Lowe Preservation Society as well as the gift of the publishing company Golden West Books, donated by the late founder, Donald Duke.Preserving the past for future generations is his way of giving something back to the community that seemed lost in history books and old photos. His drive and passion for collecting and displaying pieces related to local transportation history have been acknowledged by the Pasadena Museum of History, where he has guest curated numerous displays for them and loaned several items to the Huntington Library for the 300th Anniversary of the birth of Father Serra. Websites: mountlowe.orgGoldenwestbooks.comOffice Number: (626) 458-8148__________________SGV Master Key Podcast:www.sgvmasterkey.cominfo@sgvmasterkey.com

“Now I'm making something that I didn't imagine. It's not going like I imagined, but it's going. And then when you finish the Object Thing book, then it has the power to take you on a journey that you never would have dreamt had you kept the idea in your interior museum. And then that shifts your imagination. You have more, more artwork that's collected in the Interior Museum and but, and then as you grow older, as a maker, You see that distinction, right? The distinction between the beautiful interior museum and the museum in reality of things that you've actually made and done and the stories attached to the making and doing that have changed your life.” I am joined today by my dear friend, Alexandra Grant. Alexandra is a fascinating person and talented visual artist whose work examines language and written texts through painting, drawing, sculpture, video, and other media and has been exhibited at institutions across the country: at Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (MOCA), the Pasadena Museum of California Art, among others. In 2008, she created the grantLOVE Project, which has raised awareness and funds for various arts nonprofits through the gift and sale of her iconic LOVE artwork. In 2017, she and her life partner, Keanu Reeves, co-founded X Artists' Books, an artist-centric publishing house, helping artists and readers alike explore the creation of artwork and ideas outside the traditional model of book publishing. If that wasn't enough, Alexandra is currently leading the first NFT project of the Hollywood Sign for the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce and is an Advisor to the Future Verse Foundation. She joins me today to meditate on art and love—as we celebrate the release of her book Love: A Visual History of the grantLOVE Project. A comprehensive history of the foundation she started fifteen years ago, the book is a visual collection of paintings, prints, sculptures, textiles, jewelry, and architecture gathered by Grant and her collaborators to explore the timeless question, what is love? Our conversation is a peek into our regular walk and talks—a beloved routine through which we have been able to explore, reflect, and build an incredibly meaningful friendship. Today we discuss what it means to be looked at and perceived by the public, especially as the partner of one of the most famous actors of our generation; the inevitable disappointment that results from taking the beautiful ideas in our heads and attempting to turn them into something physical; and owning our native talents in the pursuit of a creative live, whether or not we fit into the conventions of being an artist. You have to create opportunities between the cracks, she tells us. Okay, let's get to our conversation. Storyteller Dirk Wales, 87. Inspiring others with his stories Storyteller, Dirk Wales has been leaving positive imprints around the world for several decades. He is the author of novels, ‘how-to’ books, and children’s books including A Lucky Dog about Owney, the post office dog. He found a niche in movie making through his Rainbow Film productions. Rainbow Productions produced more than 70 films about anesthesia as well as children’s animated films and other genre of film. Chicago, Illinois USA is his birth city but his parents raised him in California. While living in California as a teenager he worked as a carhop where he waited on Frankie Laine, Nat King Cole, and Ronald Reagan and Jane Wyman. With his earnings he enrolled at the University of California where he says his education provided him the foundation for his accomplishments. UCLA in California was the beginnings of the wonder of my own education. The only university that I could afford was University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) with the tuition being $18 a semester. One of my deepest and important inspirations of my life was being a theater student at UCLA. Ralph Freud, an actor, and film producer Kenneth Macgowan, were both instrumental in creating the theater department in which I attended five years later. This was the beginnings of the wonder of my own education. I learned how to be an actor, writer, script writer, set designer, director, producer, storyteller, gaffer, etc., and furthermore I did sixteen plays a year where I won best director’s award for two plays that I wrote. Early Working YearsWhen I graduated I landed a job with a motion-picture and television studio but soon I was a platoon leader in southern Germany guarding the border with Czechoslovakia against five divisions of Russian tanks. During my years at UCLA I attended ROTC classes and as a graduate student I served in the army as a Lieutenant. So off I went to Munich Germany as part of an armored infantry unit. I learned a lot. I might have been a Lieutenant but every other man in the unit knew more than me. My leadership is based on collaborating with the men because we trusted each other. Reading books opened up a whole new world for meGrowing up my parents didn’t encourage reading so I never really did any reading of books until I was in my thirties. Seven and eight decades when I grew up there were no art galleries or bookstores, except in New York. Well I moved to New York when I was in my thirties. New York was a great place for me because I experienced art galleries, plays, book stores, museums! I started reading all sorts of books and I never read anything so powerful and so meaningful until I read Call of the Wild by Jack London. This book changed everything for me. My life changed. I changed my life. Jack London’s book just meant so much to me and when I was in Pasadena I saw a photo at the Pasadena Museum of Gold Miners. Amongst the gold miners is a dog. This photo and London’s book inspired me and so I invented Jack London’s dog and I wrote a book. Jack London’s Dog is about a lost dog who befriends Jack during the gold rush in the 1890s. It’s a story about friendship and adventure. I’ve made some wonderful friends because of this book. Jack London’s club asked me to speak and since then I’ve joined the club and am grateful for all of the experiences and friends I’ve made from this. I’m Obsessed with Work and Writing and I love storytellingI got an idea from three pages from a non-fiction story about a dispute in the 1800s between Egypt and France. A giraffe was given to the King of France. My book is The Giraffe Who Walked to Paris. A Lucky Dog is my best-selling book which is a true story about the travels of Owney, a stray puppy at the Albany Post Office. Owney became the official...

She and her son had a long labor, and her milk took a long time to come in, after days of a mysterious fever. When it did come in, only one side was producing due to leftover scar tissue from a 15-year old piercing, and one bad latch resulted in painful blisters which made breastfeeding impossible for a week. Low supply meant she started supplementing with formula from day 3, and although she had wanted to breastfeed exclusively, she did what she had to, and Erin and her husband were glad to provide their little boy with much-needed sustenance when her body couldn’t.   Despite a rocky start they were able to breastfeed for 9 months, and for some of that time she was able to feed fully from one breast.  This is a special edition of Big Birth Junkie that coincides with the artwork of Judy Chicago's Birth Project Born Again Series at the Pasadena Museum and relates to her piece: Birth Garment Amazon.  _________ For more information to go: GraceFull or follow us: @gracefullbirth or our guest: Erin Battles on Facebook __________ This episode is sponsored by GraceFull where you can find BBJ's host Elizabeth's free ebook: Birth Planning: All the Questions to Ask and all kinds of educational videos including Childbirth Education, Advanced Doula Trainings and Lactation Support.  If you live in Los Angeles, check out our midwives for home births, water birth, and our accredited birthing center.
