Paul Unger is joined by Jeremy Hinds, planning director at Savills, and Tom Cheesewright to explore the reasons holding back real estate from taking the radical steps needed to challenge climate change. Takeaways There is a lack of a consensus framework in which to discuss the problems and how to address them Without sufficient policy responses individuals will increasingly put forward radical ideas which prompt counter responses and only delay the forming of a consensus Requirements to do something about climate change are very challenging – this puts people off As timeframes to act become shorter, the responses needed become more radical Short-term outlooks of voter-obsessed politicians obstruct the consensus and avoid difficult solutions Climate policy should be outsourced and made independent and objective in same way as countries' central banks often are

One of the leading players in ESG data for real estate globally, Matt Ellis was a sustainability adviser at CBRE before he set up Measurabl in 2013. Today Mesaurabl employs 200 staff providing ESG data on more than 13bn sq ft of commercial real estate across 90 countries. He is also a fine writer and his ‘From Green to ESG' book sets a compelling argument for transparency in markets and casts doubt on the objectivity of green building certificates. He sat down with Paul Unger to look beyond the doom and gloom that often surrounds climate crisis conversations and to focus instead on reasons to be cheerful. Takeaways Corporate real estate is now embracing sustainability and the wider ESG as business priorities Climate legislation is finally arriving to incentivise companies to adopt green energy measures – but does it go far enough on carbon tax Climate tech = jobs, jobs, jobs. The way the industry works is being transformed and buildings will be procured in totally different ways in future, starting now Small and medium property companies face a ‘data competency' vacuum they need to address, this is a struggle without extra resource to upskill management Large property holders are decarbonizing their estates and looking for solutions that are ready to plug into, this is a rapidly maturing marketplace and established suppliers are preferred, new entrants will be left behind Subscribe to PlaceTech for FREE at placetech.net/subscribe

Hello. This is Laurence Colletti for This Week on Legal Talk Network. Monday, hosts Sharon Nelson and Jim Calloway from The Digital Edge speak with expert Paul Unger about the best use of Powerpoint in the courtroom. Wednesday, we join New Solo host Adriana Linares for a lively conversation with her guest Susan Liebel Cartier from Solo Practice University. And on Friday, we finish the week with Paralegal Mentor Vicki Voisin guiding us through an in depth discussion with distinguished Attorney Lin Wood - his experiences representing clients Richard Jewel and John and Patsy Ramsey and the challenges they faced in the court of public opinion. Here's a preview . . . So tune in. It's all right here . . . This Week on Legal Talk Network.
Many attorneys now use PowerPoint in trial to preview, highlight, and sum up the evidence for their arguments and organize their presentations. Effective PowerPoints garner the attention of court personnel and jury members and enhance their overall presentation. However, ineffective PowerPoints can be confusing, difficult to read, or distract the audience from the presentation's overall objective. Attorney and legal technology consultant Paul Unger argues that only with the proper skills and learning can a lawyer create an informative and engaging PowerPoint presentation that will be a useful tool in the courtroom. In this episode of The Digital Edge, Sharon Nelson and Jim Calloway interview Unger about the best practices in using PowerPoint in the courtroom. Unger emphasizes simplicity, professionalism, and making PowerPoint a tool that reinforces the content rather than providing it. According to research Unger has done, audiences who are distracted by bullet points and excess text are unlikely to remember much of the slide's content or even the presenting lawyer's main point. He recommends that the PowerPoint slides provide only headlines and pictures that are held together by the attorney's narrative. Unger's experience in PowerPoint and legal technology comes from being an attorney and founding principal of Affinity Consulting Group, a nationwide consulting company providing legal technology consulting, continuing legal education, and training. He specializes in trial presentation and litigation technology, document and case management, and paperless office strategies. To learn more, pick up a copy of his book, PowerPoint in One Hour for Lawyers, at the ABA bookstore. Special thanks to our sponsor, ServeNow.
ABA TECHSHOW 2011 closed with a crowd in attendance for 60 Sites in 60 Minutes. Jim and Sharon joined colleagues ABA TECHSHOW 2010 chair Paul Unger and TECHSHOW planning board member Erik Mazzone for this lively presentation. Jim and Sharon just couldn't get enough of talking about interesting and fun websites for lawyers so they decided to discuss some of the websites here, beginning with a 'missing site" that was mysteriously omitted from the original 60 Sites presentation.
Past ABA TECHSHOW Chairs Jim and Sharon welcome Paul Unger, Chair of ABA TECHSHOW 2011, for a preview of the exciting 25th anniversary of bringing lawyers and technology together!
I spoke with Paul Unger of Affinity Consulting Group about reinvention in law practice management. He discusses the impact of cloud computing, online learning, and how the use of technology in the courtroom is “breathing new life into what [lawyers] do.”
