Hemophilia is a rare bleeding disorder caused by a deficiency in clotting factors in the blood, which can cause permanent damage to joints and, in some cases, life threatening bleeding, both externally and internally. Today, people with hemophilia can live generally long, healthy lives, but in previous generations, the future wasn't so bright. In fact, less than a century ago the life expectancy for someone with hemophilia hovered around just 10 years. It doesn't receive much attention, and when it does, what you hear might not be all that accurate. In today's episode, we cover the history of hemophilia and the science behind treatments over the decades, including the devastating impact of the HIV/AIDS epidemic on hemophilia patients. We'll also clear up several misconceptions, including one that seems to show up a lot in popular culture: that hemophilia is a "royal disease.” Send us your science facts, news, or other stories for a chance to be featured on an upcoming Tiny Show and Tell Us bonus episode. Listen in to learn: The various diets popular right now Why intermittent fasting is especially effective Who can benefit most from a specific diet Robb Wolf, a former research biochemist and a two-time New York Times and WSJ Best Selling author, shares the latest dietary health and fitness info. Even though diets may be touted as widely effective, everyone functions differently and can benefit from more variability in the diet space. If a diet is not working for an individual, there may be underlying causes other than lack of discipline. For many of us, the most benefits can be found by combining many effective components of a range of diets. However, for one important takeaway, an emphasis on good-quality sleep and eating protein first in a meal are widely effective. Visit https://robbwolf.com to learn more. This week, join Simon on a deep dive through time into the evolution and possible origins of neurodiversity. From the ancient wisdom of neurodivergent shamans to the brilliant minds of Einstein, Darwin, and van Gogh, we'll uncover the hidden stories of how neurodiversity has been shaping our world in unexpected ways. But it's not all sunshine and rainbows. We'll also explore the dark side of how society has often misunderstood and marginalized those who think differently, and how the fight for neurodiversity acceptance is still an ongoing battle.1. This webinar will include live deliveries of two presentations from the recent FRTR Fall meeting, with updated information: "Best Practices for PFAS Sampling and Evaluation" "Clean Water Act Methods: Overview of EPA's CWA PFAS Method Activities". The science and technology of site characterization for per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) has advanced in the five years since FRTR last addressed the topic in 2018. Federal agency budgets for PFAS remediation have grown substantially during this time. As a result, site characterization efforts such as Remedial Investigations, as well as early response actions, are underway at many Federal facilities. Funding for field-scale projects to further advance PFAS characterization technology and methodologies also has increased substantially. This webinar will allow PFAS member agencies to share results of recent and on-going PFAS projects that are improving our understanding of PFAS characterization technologies. Welcome to “Analytically Speaking,” the podcast from LCGC and Spectroscopy. Here in Episode 13, podcast host Dr. Jerry Workman talks to Dr. Paul C. DeRose, who is a senior research chemist at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and leads the NIST Biochemical Science Division's project in luminescence standards development for chemical analysis and assay validation. We spoke to Paul about his current research interests in fluorescence and luminescence spectroscopy, specifically concerning the development of fluorescence standards and methods for validation of chemical and clinical assays. Paul's research has resulted in publications in various areas of fluorescence spectroscopy and microscopy. He has developed fluorescence standard guidelines and recommendations for ASTM, IUPAC, and the US Pharmacopeia. He is also the chair of ASTM E13.01.01 sub-committee on Molecular Luminescence.
In 2021, the estimated number of women in the United States living with metastatic breast cancer rose to about 168,000 from 155,000 the year before, according to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. The good news is that survival rates are also climbing, Over the last 20 years, advances in HER2 targeting treatments, ADCs, immune checkpoint inhibitors, and CDK4/6 inhibitors have prolonged survival and changed the breast cancer treatment landscape. New treatment paradigms and advances invariably lead to more questions about optimal drug sequencing, mechanisms of resistance, and how to overcome that resistanceIn this episode we attempt to tackle these questions and review new advances and trends in MBC with assistance from Dr. Stephanie GraffTake a listen. It is going to be an exciting discussion.More info about the show and past episodes is available on our website: www.ourmbclife.orgGot something to share? Feedback?
