Welcome to the 100th episode of The Art & Science of Learning podcast in which we are celebrating this major milestone. What an incredibly rewarding and enjoyable journey it has been, I learned a lot and met many fascinating people. I not only learned how to create a podcast from scratch, but I also learned so much from the many guests I interviewed from around the world. In this special episode, I am speaking with two learning professionals and podcasters whom I admire. They both have very successful podcasts on learning that have gone far beyond 100 episodes. We discuss how they started their podcast, what inspired them, what they learned along the way, and what they are excited about in the field of learning. Prof. Chris Dede was the Timothy E. Wirth Professor in Learning Technologies at the Harvard Graduate School of Education for 22 years and currently, he is Senior Research Fellow. Chris is also the co-founder of the Silver Lining for Learning podcast and initiative. His fundamental interest is developing new types of educational systems to meet the opportunities and challenges of the 21st century. His research spans emerging technologies for learning, infusing technology into large-scale educational improvement initiatives, developing policies that support educational transformation, and providing leadership in educational innovation. Currently, Chris is a Co-Principal Investigator of the NSF-funded National Artificial Intelligence Institute in Adult Learning and Online Education. The war on gender has many fronts. In a time of unprecedented division among genders, comedian Omid Djalili shares a cautionary tale of the history of Iran's two revolutions, how women-led revolutions are our best chance of liberating us all, and how men can make a difference from the West. Around the world women's rights to freedom, justice and civil rights are being infringed upon and, in the case of Iran, violently attacked. The protests and revolution are a struggle for freedom and equality. This is not a fight against the hijab or against men. It is a fight against ignorance and as such it is supported fiercely by the men of Iran who are suffering a majority of casualties in their activism. New episodes every Monday

She was one of the first women to appear with Jasper Carrott and on Spitting Image, and last year she made her solo Edinburgh debut with her show Difficult Woman. Simon Fanshawe is funny, authentic and passionate about making the world a better place. He trained as a lawyer and promptly abandoned a career in law and became a comedian. Simon was doing stand-up comedy from 1982 to 1992, when it began to transition from safe jokes about your mother-in-law performed in men's clubs to the diverse, political, anything goes stand-up that gets performed in stadiums today. He won the Perrier Award for comedy at the Edinburgh Fringe in 1989, but comedy wasn't to be where he made his mark.   From 1992, Simon focused on writing and broadcasting, alongside a growing involvement in charity work and advocacy. He was a founding member of Stonewall and one of the architects of bringing equal rights to the forefront of the diversity debate. Today, Simon has an OBE and is in demand as a speaker on diversity, and as a consultant helping businesses use inclusion and diversity as tools to create business advantage.   There are some massive value bombs in this show, particularly around the importance of persona and the relationship with your audience, as well as tactics for making your talk relevant and engaging to increase your impact and bookings.   Enjoy!   What you'll learn What it was like to be a stand-up comic at the birth of alternative comedy in the UK. How important it is to find your persona and understand your relationship with audience. Why advocacy and public speaking need similar skills and objectives. How you can adapt your talk at short notice. Why passion can be your worst enemy in speaking. How diversity can help meet so many business challenges Why good design is more important for achieving equality than good intentions. The cardinal rule of public speaking. Why having a story is so critical to speaking success.   Resources*   All things Simon: http:/www.diversitybydesign.co.uk simon@diversitybydesign.co.uk @Simonfanshawe   Books mentioned in the Show with Amazon Link: What Works – Gender Equality by Design by Iris Bohnet Germinal by Emile Zola   Thanks for listening! Garry’s guest tonight is Terry Alderton, one of Britain’s most exciting comedians and a man Frank Skinner dubbed “a flipping genius”… only he didn’t say flipping. Famous for his roles in TV hits such as EastEnders and London’s Burning, Terry’s first love was Southend United Football Club – he played in goal for their youth team – but the stage was where he really scored. Terry’s gift for mimicry made him a rising star in what we used to call old school mainstream comedy. But his originality and risk-taking appealed to young club audiences too and in 1999 he was nominated for a Perrier Award. Prime time Saturday night entertainment shows like Red Alert and The Joy of Text beckoned…he was only weeks away from Masonry and a round of golf with Lynchy and Tarby. But that wasn’t where Alderton wanted his career to go. In 2005 he experienced an epiphany that made his act far from mainstream – he started having conversations on stage with the voices in his head. The new act proved a hit with audiences the world over. Here Terry opens up about comedy, soap opera, his highs and the horrible low that was the worst gig of his life… Info on Terry's latest gigs here >>>>>> Download the show as mp3 file Subscribe in iTunes
