Beekeeping Today Podcast Shorts brings you a quick dive into the latest buzz in beekeeping. In this first special episode, we welcome Dr. Humberto Boncristiani of Inside The Hive TV to discuss the alarming commercial colony losses reported this season. With beekeepers across the country facing unexpected die-offs, Humberto shares insights from his investigations, his conversations with industry experts like Blake Shook, and what beekeepers should watch for as the situation unfolds. Is this Colony Collapse Disorder all over again? What role might weather, pathogens, and management practices play? Humberto unpacks the factors contributing to these losses and offers a critical reminder: in times of crisis, beekeepers must seek reliable information, avoid knee-jerk reactions, and keep collecting data. Tune in for a timely and candid discussion about what's happening in the field, the challenges of understanding large-scale colony losses, and how beekeepers can stay informed. We have long been hearing about various threats to bees and other pollinators, including Colony Collapse Disorder, new pathogens and bee pests, environmental and nutritional stressors, and pesticides such as neonicotinoids. Impacts to Queen Bees and their genetics are also a concern. According to the non-profit organization, HoneyLove, cities are apparently the last refuge for the Honeybee. HoneyLove [http://honeylove.org] is dedicated to urban beekeeping, educational outreach, and advocating for the health and well-being of honey bees. This week, we welcome Ceebs Bailey, HoneyLove's Factotum, and Kristy Pace, their Volunteer Director. We owe a debt to bees as they pollinate 80-90% of the world's flowering plants, including more than 130 types of fruits and vegetables. One out of every three or four bites of food you eat was made possible by bees and the honeybee is responsible for $15 billion in U.S. agricultural crops annually. While some are concerned about the health of bees for economic reasons and threats to food production on this continent, the reality is our fate is directly connected to bees and their giveaway to the ecosystem at large, in vitalizing the growth of trees, flowers, and a host of other plants; they are essential to creating and sustaining biodiversity on the planet. The average human on this continent consumes roughly 1.31 lbs of honey per year which translates to a bee visiting 2+ million flowers and flying 55,000+ miles. May we offer up more love, gratitude and respect to the Honeybee and learn how we can contribute to their continuance. For an extended interview and other benefits, become an EcoJustice Radio patron at https://www.patreon.com/posts/honeylove-with-84482060 HoneyLove.org [http://honeylove.org] is a Los Angeles-based educational non-profit focused on teaching the public about honey bees and aspiring hobbyists about safe and respectful urban beekeeping. Ceebs Bailey is a writer in West L.A. who started out a few years ago with a modest tumbling composter outside the kitchen door and now has raised beds in the front yard, a flock of chickens and six beehives around the city. Kristy Pace has been cultivating community through theatre, artivism, and volunteerism for over 20 years. Our guest for episode 92 of the Bees with Ben podcast is Carmel from ‘CMG Honeybee'. Carmel hails from Melbourne's west and had a varied career before turning her passion for bees into a business. Originally from Kangaroo Island in South Australia, where she grew up on eighty acres and was always surrounded by wildlife and the bush, Carmel moved to Queensland after completing high school to study music. She worked as a professional musician in a marching band before studying hairdressing, and then moved down south when her then husband was offered a job in Melbourne more than thirty years ago. Since then she has raised a family as a single mum, working first as a hairdresser and then in various capacities at Yarraville West Primary School, where she also ran the choir and a class in face painting! She supplemented her income with a second job as a security officer. Carmel's journey into beekeeping came about largely by accident in November 2012, when she discovered a swarm that had taken up residence in a wall cavity of her rented property. She was acutely aware of the problems caused overseas by Colony Collapse Disorder, and determined to save the bees, which her landlord wanted to poison. She had heard of a rather colourful character called Adrian who had host hives around Melbourne and used to ride a rickshaw around Footscray; Carmel was face painting at a festival when she learned that Adrian and some other beekeepers were in attendance, and met up with a lady named Angela Castella who by coincidence lived on the same estate and taught her how to catch swarms. Covid was difficult for CMG, as Carmel lost half her business through the inability to conduct school talks and incursions. Cash flow is a real problem in the beekeeping industry and winter can be a struggle. However, Carmel has learnt the benefit of investing in herself, and is undertaking some business training which she believes will stand her in good stead. She also advocates regular exercise and a healthy diet, along with clear boundaries, and the segregation of working hours and personal time - creating a balance between work, rest and play. Moving forward, Carmel says that she has a hive in a childcare centre that has produced some amazing and unexpected results in terms of wellbeing; she also wants to grow the mentoring side of her business, as well as explore the possibilities of apitherapy. https://www.cmghoneybee.com.au/ https://www.instagram.com/cmg_honeybee/

This week's episode is all about honeybees! Did you know that there are 4,000 different bee species native to North America? Honey bees, however, are not native to North America, but were brought here from Europe in the 17th century, and have since become are integral part of our ecosystem. They are efficient pollinators who, along with native bees, allow our food crops and the planet's flora to flourish. Factors in our environment such as climate change, habitat loss, and widespread usage of chemicals in modern-day agriculture are threatening to the bee population, and in turn, to our food supply. Bees have always been a part of Tierney Monahan's life, and her fascination with them has been well-documented in her new book, Beyond Honey. She weaves together beautiful stories about the economic, entrepreneurial, and environmental impacts of bees on our society. Today we will be speaking to her about her fascination with bees and how she has documented them as a writer for the Georgetown Magazine, and as author of her book as an MBA candidate at Georgetown University. Tierney also shares with us her mission of educating individuals on the impact of honey bees on society. On this episode of the world famous Sofa King Podcast, we talk about a topic near and dear to Brent's heart—Bees. We all know he thinks bees are robots, but why? It may be because of a crazy “Waggle Dance” they perform to communicate where food is. This dance has been repeated by actual robots to talk to bee colonies, by the way. From queens to drones to soldiers, bees are fascinating. They have a strange social life and an even stranger sex life. Bees are also vanishing in America due to Colony Collapse Disorder. Originally from the U.S. State of California, Derek has acquired a wide range of experiences to draw from. He spent 4 years in the U.S. Army where he was stationed in Mannheim, Germany. After leaving the army he then became a Commercial Deep Sea Diver, where he would work subsurface on oil platforms in the Gulf of Mexico. After a time, Derek moved on to manage a retail sporting goods store, work as a contractor for Microsoft, then ended up spending nearly 16 years as a Washington State Correctional Officer, all before pursuing his passion with the bees. Derek had an interest in bees for many years but due to job changes and frequent moves it was not possible to start a hive of his own. Derek and his family were able to relocate to the Cascade Mountains of Washington State where their living situation finally allowed for multiple beehives. Derek along with his wife Maureen are Washington State-based chemical-free beekeepers, who believe bees can and should be kept both chemical & treatment-free. Experiencing 100% beehive losses from CCD or Colony Collapse Disorder his first year of beekeeping, Derek embarked on an extensive online research campaign to find natural way to help stop the devastating bee losses from occurring. During the winter months of 2016 Derek came across a unique mineral called Shungite. Shungite has been used in medical treatment since the early 18th century, and has the ability to block certain frequencies. Enough studies had been published by this point that it was apparent that the many frequencies within our environment (cellphones/wi-fi) were harming the bee populations, and disrupting their navigational systems. While preparing to start new beehives in the Spring of 2017, Derek spoke with friends who were also aware of Shungite and its unique healing & frequency blocking qualities. Combining years of online research on natural health and healing remedies along with his own intuitive abilities Derek determined that Shungite could be beneficial for humans and bees alike. Between his own intuition and those discussions Derek made the decision to use Shungite with his beehives. Initially 3 small Shungite nuggets were placed at one of the beehives entrances, then he observed. In the following weeks he painted his beehives with a mixture of Shungite powder blended into the beehives paint, providing a blanket of protection around the entire beehive. As the weeks progressed, all the while providing no other treatment of any kind for pests, disease or sickness, the bees flourished, by years end the beehive had expanding into a total of 4 healthy beehives, with no signs of any sickness or disease and none of the dreaded colony collapse disorder that’s become so prevalent amongst beekeepers. The 2018 honeybee season is ending in Washington State, with similar results as 2017, no sickness, disease or losses in any of the Shungite Beehives. Derek & Maureen’s goal is to continue the research and share their experience with beekeepers worldwide in hopes of helping to save our struggling bee populations. In addition, taking advantage of their extensive research and broad knowledge on natural health and healing remedies, Derek and Maureen produce ( on their premises) a broad range of health and beauty products, many using their beehives honey and other organic components; these products are sold through their website and other marketing channels, thus helping sustain their beehive operation. In the mid-2000s, estimates in the United States suggested that we were losing up to 40% of honeybee colonies. The phenomenon of Colony Collapse Disorder was widely covered in the media as the next emerging threat, but then it all but disappeared. Beyond these headlines, we never heard much follow up as to how bee populations were faring. This week we return to the bees with entomologist Dr. Samuel Ramsey. Highlighting the intertwining issues of poor nutrition, pesticides, and parasites, Dr. Ramsey also shares how climate change impacts the nutritional quality of pollen and how human design and development has strengthened and spread parasitic mites to the disadvantage of bees globally. Samuel Ramsey earned his doctorate from Dr. Dennis van Engelsdorp’s lab at the University of Maryland; Dr. Ramsey maintains a focus on how insect research can benefit the public through the development of IPM strategies and STEM-based outreach initiatives. A former college teacher in the US (MA from the University of Tennessee), and then a Waldorf School gardening and environmental teacher for 22 years in Germany. He returned to the USA in 1996 to co-found the Pfeiffer Center for Biodynamic and Environmental Studies in Spring Valley, NY. For 11 years he taught the subject "gardening" to Foundation Year and Teacher Training classes at Sunbridge College. He has traveled throughout the USA and internationally, giving workshops and talks on Sustainable, Biodynamic Beekeeping, Gardening with Children, and Biodynamic Farming & Gardening. Since the mid-seventies he has been a beekeeper, deeply involved in researching how to keep bees in ways that would be more in harmony with their own needs, thus raising their level of vitality and health. In his book Toward Saving the Honeybee, first published 5 years before the Colony Collapse Disorder crisis, in 2002, he called for a radical change in beekeeping methods. Together with his wife Vivian, he co-founded Spikenard Farm Honeybee Sanctuary in 2006, a non-profit education and research organization located in the Blue Ridge Mountains in Floyd, Virginia.Music is Cloud Chamber by Pictures of the Floating World.

In this episode, Rita chats with Dave Noble – teacher, apiarist & bee champion. Dave started his career as a beekeeper over 20 years ago, after studying with Ohio State’s Honeybee Research Lab. That was back before the mid-2000s, when Colony Collapse Disorder sent honeybee populations plummeting. His life’s work has been in caring for these important pollinators…currently he has 50 hives across central Ohio, with the majority of them at his home base of Stratford Ecological Center. Additionally Dave is a talented teacher and his impact over the decades has reached thousands of people. He’s got a unique teaching style – a knack for demystifying the bees & creating empathy for them which creates a larger impact on his students & our community.
