Nancy Treaster joins host Ron Aaron and co-host Carol Zernial to talk about how her caregiving journey led her to co-found the not-for-profit, The Caregiver's Journey on this edition of Caregiver SOS. About Nancy Nancy Treaster, a retired software industry veteran who spent her professional life managing strategy for a publicly-traded, global company, found herself in unfamiliar territory when her husband was diagnosed with dementia. Her usual techniques for quickly changing course and overcoming obstacles weren’t working. When she reconnected with her friend, veteran caregiver Sue Ryan, the two lamented the lack of candid and practical advice for day-to-day dementia caregiving, and then the two former colleagues did what they do best – they created a solution. Through The Caregiver’s Journey, Nancy brings her business expertise, caregiving experiences, and skills as a Certified Caregiving Consultant to improving the lives of dementia family caregivers with frank and actionable insights and advice – something there is not enough of in the marketplace. Through short and engaging podcasts as well as other resources, Nancy and Sue map out solutions that caregivers are desperately seeking. In doing so, Sue and Nancy are empowering dementia family caregivers with the knowledge and confidence they need to navigate their journey with fewer surprises and more resources. Prior to founding The Caregiver’s Journey, Nancy spent 16 years as General Manager of Strategic Operations at Verint Systems, a leader in customer experience (CX) automation. Hosts Ron Aaron and Carol Zernial, and their guests talk about Caregiving and how to best cope with the stresses associated with it. Today we're diving headfirst into 2024 with a discussion with Kristal Searle, Director of Strategic Operations for Coleman Oil that can illuminate the path that gets you unstuck. Listen in as Rob and Justin chat with Kristal Searle, a finance leader turned digital transformation driver. Kristal shares her journey from tentative Power BI beginner to confident head of BI strategy, crediting the P3 Adaptive approach for accelerating her capability along the way.   Through hands-on projects, Kristal saw firsthand how Power BI could provide real digital action versus more typical mystical transformations. We discuss false starts with other tools, the power of rapid iterations to prove concepts, and what it takes to build ambition for organization-wide change. Kristal offers sage advice on getting unstuck - from both data and outdated processes - to drive profitability.   While respecting her accounting roots, Kristal has grown to appreciate and harness the similarities between the rhythms of month-end close and the potential for real-time reporting. With longtime P3 partners by her side, she transformed not only systems but also her personal mindset and skills through tangible steps.   The moral of the story: your title doesn't define your actual skills, duties, or goals. Active and fun are rarely the first words associated with medical education, but today's Raise the Line guest, Dr. Amin Azzam, contends learners get the most value when they can engage with their education rather than passively receive knowledge. As Azzam relates to host Hillary Acer, the vice president of Strategic Operations at Osmosis, he remembers first seeing the power of active learning while observing a class of med students as a psychiatry resident. “I sat behind a one-way mirror and watched these students leading their own small-group learning and it was just palpably infectious how excited they were to learn medicine.” In the ensuing years, Azzam has happily been utilizing and developing active learning strategies as a professor at three Bay Area universities and in his role as Faculty Engagement Coordinator at Osmosis, one of many key roles he has played as a longtime team member. One of his most impactful creative strokes was creating the first medical school course dedicated to improving the quality of health information on Wikipedia, both providing a unique learning experience and improving health content that has been viewed 88 million times by people around the world. Speaking of global impact, he's also been instrumental in Osmosis initiatives to facilitate learning by medical students in war-torn Syria and refugees seeking medical care. Check out this lively and fascinating look at learner-centric education and the power of providing opportunities for students to do social good while learning. Mentioned in this episode:Osmosis OMEF-ONSA ProgramWikipedia Education Foundation

Never before have we seen 5 generations of workers at work at the same time.  Almost like a tradition, the previous generation has always bemoaned the newest one as lazy, spoiled, and in general, not as good as they were “back in the day.” Naturally, this can cause quite a lot of friction in a workplace and in the age of social media and 24/7 news cycles, it seems like there's always some new beef between Millennials and Gen Z'ers, and those that came before. But today's guest, Val Grubb, believes there's strength to be found in these differences. Val is the founder of Val Grubb & Associates, a coaching and consultancy agency that works with companies such as Siemens, Cathay Bank, Best Buy, and hundreds more. Prior to founding VG&A, Val served as the Vice President of Strategic Operations at NBC Universal, where she oversaw business development opportunities and spearheaded on-air quality initiatives for the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China. Val played a seminal role in the 1999 formation of Oxygen Media and its subsequent success, which led to the company's purchase by NBC Universal in 2007. It's safe to say that Val knows how to lead a team to great success and in her book “Clash of the Generations: Managing the New Workplace Reality,” Val goes into detail about how leaning into and embracing differences between the generations can lead to a greater performing team. Ed Magee has a fascinating career history - from the Marine Corps to decades of operations leadership at Harley-Davidson and Fender - and now he's instilling his lessons learned in a new role as Vice President for Strategic Operations at Belmont University. The truth is, university education in America is facing a crossroads: either innovate and adapt, or fade away. The workplace is changing rapidly, the market for education is changing, and what students want out of their college experience has changed. If universities don't recognize these changes and pivot, they won't be around for long.Fortunately, Ed's experience in operations leadership positions him to bring this entrepreneurial mindset to Belmont. And in this episode, we're digging into what those lessons from manufacturing are, and what higher education should be doing to adapt to the market.Inside this episode:Why systems are just as important as ambitious goalsHow to view university education through a product development lensThe value of "and, not or"How to get others on board with your big ideas3 Big Takeaways from this episode:Universities need to adopt a "startup" mindset: Higher education is facing huge changes in the market. To remain relevant universities have to pivot their educational offering to content and modes that students today want. That means adopting a startup mindset: making ambitious goals, quickly adapting to market trends, creating an innovative product that the market wants, and delivering it in a way that's meaningful and useful to students.Manufacturing operations lend themselves well to university education: From Kaizen and continuous improvement, to lean thinking, to systems and processes, the tools of manufacturing can help university leaders run a streamlined organization. By implementing these tools, universities can pivot faster, redesign an educational experience students today are looking for, and achieve bigger goals than ever before. To drive organizational change, effective leaders put people first: In any organization with big goals and initiatives, change management is all about getting people on board. While it's great for leaders to embrace and inspire toward change, what's really needed is for everyone in the organization to internalize and own the effort. That happens through listening, meeting people where they're at, investing in people, and remembering that there are more similarities than differences among us.ResourcesTo learn more about Belmont University, visit: www.belmont.eduConnect with Belmont:Facebook  |  Twitter  |  YouTube |  LinkedIn  |  InstagramEpisode page: https://techedpodcast.com/belmont/Instagram - Facebook - YouTube - TikTok - Twitter - LinkedIn

Inspired by a conversation at the 2023 CES Food Tech Expo, today we discuss how one of the most traditional industries is being transformed through Culinary Creativity, with CEO and Founder of Hungry House, a platform for creative chefs, Kristen Barnett. In creating Hungry House, Kristen shares how she puts the values of both the chef and the customer first, by focusing on food quality. Her platform allows the customer to add more meaning to the choices they make in how they explore and sustain through food, while the culinary creator, the chef, can ideate a full story around what they bring to the plate.Stories are a critical path to the future of food, Kristen says, because food has always been about more than just what you eat but the stories around the farmer, the sourcing, the produce, the chef. “It's always been about content,” she says, and through her direct to consumer platform, Kristen is able to nurture chefs to create compelling content and meaningful meals.Kristen shares how she has always been a food lover, and wanted that to be part of her career, but experiencing lyme disease in her early 20's caused her to re-asses how what she ate and her lifestyle were part of the symptoms and solutions of her health. Her ‘early life crisis' pushed her to make a hard pivot towards a career dedicated to food with a passion. Both in the food industry, Jo and Kristen also discuss how the food ecosystem is being disrupted, and how behind the food tech fads and old-school brand of the white-hat chef, sit creative culinary minds who know how to integrate food ideas, with compelling social content and convert it to commerce. --To look outside, Kristen goes to food pop ups anywhere she's traveling but especially in her home city of New York. She says food pop ups showcase the new ways in which consumers can access food and chefs innovate in how to get their food to people, which yields different ways to think about things like a constant source of inventive thinking.--Kristen Barnett is the founder & CEO of Hungry House, a NYC-based startup that partners with digitally-native chefs to bring their culinary ideas into reality through the Hungry House platform. Kristen started her career in the New York City office of The Boston Consulting Group. She unfortunately soon began to struggle with her health after contracting Chronic Lyme disease and she became seriously ill. Desperate to feel better, she turned to dietary change to feel better and she had miraculous results. Determined to make a bigger impact, she left consulting to pursue a career in the food industry. Since then, she's worked at Dig (formerly Dig Inn) where she was Director of Strategic Operations and led supply chain strategy, menu development and their food delivery and ghost kitchen business. Kristen then went on to join Zuul, a ghost kitchen tech startup where she served as Chief Operating Officer and led product strategy to develop a proprietary tech platform and multiple virtual brands. Zuul was acquired by ghost kitchen competitor, Kitchen United in summer 2021, after which, she went on to found Hungry House. Having borne witness to the explosive growth in the ghost kitchen industry, mainly with a commoditized and unhealthy product offering, she founded Hungry House in summer 2021 to create the first direct-to-consumer ghost kitchen company focusing on sustainability, diversity, quality & transparency.Kristen graduated from Cornell University magna cum laude and is passionate about plant-based eating and supporting other women in the food industry through a semi-regular women-in-food dinner series.Follow Hungry House on Instagram &
