Quote: Nothing diminishes anxiety faster than action. –Walter Anderson Chapters 0:26 Introduction to Social Anxiety 2:09 Strategies for Managing Social Anxiety 8:17 Overcoming Overthinking 12:05 Letting Go of Regrets 15:25 Embracing Change and Growth Summary In this episode, I delve into the complexities of overthinking and social anxiety, responding to the numerous inquiries I've received from individuals of all ages grappling with these challenges. It's a misconception that social anxiety only affects the younger population; many adults continue to struggle with these feelings throughout their lives. I explore the dynamics of social interactions, particularly the feelings that arise when engaging with large groups. While some individuals thrive in social settings, others might find them overwhelmingly stimulating and exhausting. Understanding where you fall on this spectrum is crucial for managing your social experiences effectively. To combat social anxiety, I've outlined several strategies aimed at fostering a sense of calm and confidence in social situations. One key suggestion is to approach your fears with curiosity rather than dread. By examining the specifics of what triggers your anxiety, you can begin to differentiate between rational concerns and exaggerated fears that stem from social apprehension. It's essential to cultivate awareness around your feelings by reflecting on your emotions in various social contexts—whether you're contending with a crowd or having a one-on-one conversation. I also emphasize the importance of rational thinking as a tool against anxiety. It's vital to ground yourself in the present and challenge negative predictions about social encounters. Just as I have personally navigated social discomfort by reframing my thoughts, I encourage you to acknowledge that you have the capacity to handle whatever may come. #SocialAnxiety #Overthinking #SelfCompassion #AnxietyManagement #SocialSituations #IntrovertStrategies #RationalThinking #SelfForgiveness #AnxietyRelief #PersonalGrowth #MentalHealthTips #EmotionalWellness #OvercomingFear #SocialAnxietyStrategies #SelfCare #AnxietyCoaches #Mindfulness #MentalHealthSupport #StressReduction #PersonalDevelopment #Introversion #AnxietyPodcast #ManagingAnxiety #OvercomingNegativeThoughts #FearOfSocialInteractions #HandlingSocialAnxiety #SelfAwareness #SelfHelp #AnxietyCoping #AnxietyTriggers #PersonalGrowthJourney #MentalClarity #IntrovertChallenges #SocialDiscomfort #AnxietyRecovery Learn more about your ad choices. These insights go beyond financial strategies—they're about building a meaningful life and thriving both personally and professionally. Key Takeaways: Enthusiasm Makes Up For A Lot: When you bring genuine energy and passion to what you do, you can overcome skill gaps and turn setbacks into stepping stones. Quote: “Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson It's OK to Grieve: Acknowledging loss and allowing yourself to feel can fuel long-term resilience. Give yourself permission to slow down, process, and come back stronger. Relationships Rule: Your network, friendships, and mentors matter—both in business and in life. Prioritize people over transactions.Quote: “You can make more friends in two months by becoming interested in other people than you can in two years by trying to get other people interested in you.” – Dale Carnegie Build a Life: Don't just focus on building a business—build a life you love. Align your goals, values, and daily habits so that you enjoy the journey, not just the destination. Invest in Yourself: Continuous learning, personal development, and self-care pay off in every area. Now is the time to understand more, so that we may fear less. -Marie Curie Chapters 0:00 Introduction to Fear 2:41 Understanding False Evidence 6:03 Facing the Fear 8:10 Befriending the Fear 9:25 The Fight, Flight, Freeze Response 10:47 The Path to Acceptance Summary In today's episode of the Anxiety Coaches Podcast, I delve into the concept of fear and how it often manifests as false evidence appearing real (FEAR). As I explore this acronym, I aim to help listeners recognize that much of the fear we experience is rooted in our perceptions rather than actual threats. Together, we analyze how our minds can create a cycle of fear, where adrenaline leads to physical responses, which in turn validate our perceived dangers, keeping us trapped in a continuous loop. I emphasize the importance of acknowledging the relationship between our minds and bodies, as they constantly influence each other. Understanding that our thoughts are not necessarily truths is crucial. Many of us allow fleeting thoughts to hold significant power over our emotions and actions, leading to unnecessary anxiety. By recognizing that fear is often an illusion, we can begin to dismantle the hold it has over us. It's essential to understand that the real danger often lies not in the fear itself but in our fear of experiencing fear. Drawing inspiration from Franklin D. Roosevelt's famous quote, "the only thing we have to fear is fear itself," I encourage listeners to reflect on how this idea manifests in their own lives. By confronting the notion that we might be afraid of our own feelings of fear, we can free ourselves from that cycle. This realization can serve as a significant turning point for many; once we recognize the self-imposed barriers created by our fear of fear, we can start to dismantle those walls. I provide guidance on the approach we should take toward fear. Rather than fleeing, fighting, or freezing when faced with fearful thoughts or sensations, I advocate for embracing the fear. I suggest welcoming it and allowing it to exist without giving it undue attention or power. This practice is not about eliminating fear but rather about creating a friendly relationship with it, where we acknowledge fear as a part of our lives without letting it dictate our actions. Quote “Nothing compares to the simple pleasure of a bike ride.” John F. Kennedy Welcome to the Sensory Strides podcast.  Observations of the world through activity, reading, listening, and everything else. My husband and I had planned our weeklong summer vacation to Colorado for the past week. However, multiple things occurred that caused us to delay the vacation a month or so.  However, I definitely needed a break, and it was the weekend of our fifth wedding anniversary, so we ended up taking a four-day weekend. We were going to head to Duluth / Superior since neither of us had been there before, but there were very few motel rooms to be had and the ones available were way out of the price range I was willing to spend. Instead, we headed to Iowa to bike ride all weekend.  Without even having a plan when we left on Friday morning, we couldn't have ended up with a better weekend.  I had heard about the High Trestle Trail for many years, mostly because I still listen to Ragbrai and Iowa Bike Coalition's podcast “Just Go Bike”.  I had seen pictures and was intrigued.  We got to the area early enough on Friday to ride a portion of the trail and still check into our motel room, eat dinner, and head back to see the bridge lit up at night.  The trail is amazing.  Super smooth and very wide, so even though there was plenty of bike traffic, there weren't any passing issues with a narrow path. JustGoBike (pod.link) High Trestle Trail | What We Do | INHF Saturday, we headed south of Des Moines and rode part of the Great Western Trail, which took us past the Des Moines airport.  We got to see a couple of jets landing and a few taking off.  We then hopped in the car and headed towards downtown and rode along the river and up to the capital building.  We also rode by Principal Park where I snapped a few pictures for my daughter who is a Cubs fan.  The Cub's minor league team plays in Des Moines. Great Western Trail - Polk County Iowa Principal Park | Cubs (milb.com) While in Des Moines, we realized the 70.3 Ironman was happening Sunday.  Since I am usually a participant and not a spectator and an Ironman race is known to be so well run, we decided to spectate.  However, thunderstorms rolled through overnight and early morning, and no one was sure if the race would even happen.  So, we didn't bother setting an alarm and decided to play by ear.  While it did take us longer to get to parking than we planned, we still were able to sleep in a bit and get to the race while the swim was in high gear.  They didn't end up starting until 9:45 and they had to cut the bike distance in half to reduce the time impact. (10) IRONMAN 70.3 Des Moines | Facebook WOW!  That was a lot of people and a lot of logistics!  I'm not sure I would have done my 70.3 if I had spectated a race of that distance beforehand.  It was exhausting just watching the participants. Overall, it was a great, relaxing weekend with lots of fresh air.  Just what I needed. About Bobbi Most people haven't heard a doctor tell them, “You shoudn't be alive.” Bobbi has. And her personal story of re-building her health to become a vibrant athlete is inspiring and offers hope to listeners that anything is possible for them. It also gives her credibility as she hasn't just studied these concepts, she has lived them – and, in fact, is alive because of them. Bobbi blends her storytelling ability with her experience in coaching thousands of people and her graduate studies to deliver key insights and practical steps forward. One of Bobbi's signature strengths is in helping people to “Just Start” and to learn their way forward. This is rooted in her belief that while goal setting and having a vision is important, it is more important to just start. Nothing happens until you do. No progress can be made, and no learning can be created until we put ourselves in the game. Bobbi offers listeners proven ways to get off the bench and move towards their goals and dreams. A critical component of that is to manage the voice inside each of us that tell us to “just wait.” This is the voice that tells us that we might fail or be rejected or make a mistake or look foolish. In having coached more than 3000 people in her career, Bobbi understands how to help people silence that voice and move forward. The other critical piece is to learn your way forward. It is almost impossible to know everything we need to know before we start – and that is not a reason to wait. It simply means that we need to become students of learning how to learn the skills, behaviors and mindsets that will make us successful. These are all learnable behaviors and skills; they are not innate things that we are born with or not. They can be learned and developed the same as any other skill, like learning to ride, learning to ski, or learning to hit a ball. We may not become great at them overnight, but they can be learned, practiced, and mastered. One thing that Bobbi's journey – and her vast coaching experience -- has taught her is that change, challenge, and uncertainty are a normal part of life. When we accept that, and we frame it as “what do I need to learn next?” we can and will make progress towards what is important to us. Bobbi's belief -- and her personal story -- is that when we do all these things, we can truly lead our own life and create the life we love to live -- everyday. She has a deep belief that we can all love our lives all 52 weeks of the year -- not just the two weeks of vacation. That's what she and her husband set out to do when they left corporate America and while the road hasn't been without it's ups and downs and twists and turns, it's what they've created for themselves. It is achievable. http://www.bobbikahler.com/

Sept 30, 2020: Biden to Trump: "Shut Up, Man"

AM Quickie

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 30, 2020 7:35

Welcome to Majority.FM's AM QUICKIE! Brought to you by justcoffee.coop TODAY'S HEADLINES: Joe Biden faced Donald Trump last night in the first of three presidential debates. Trump tried to make it Wrestlemania, but Biden gave as good as he got. Meanwhile, internal company documents show that Amazon has effectively covered up a major safety crisis at its warehouses. It got worse after they brought in robots. And lastly, a group of scientists have presented evidence that they have a new technique to produce a compact nuclear fusion reactor. If it works, that could be great news on the climate change front. THESE ARE THE STORIES YOU NEED TO KNOW: Biden: "Shut up, man" The presidential candidates faced off onstage for the first time last night at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio. Hours before the debate, Joe Biden released his tax returns and called on Trump to do the same. For what it’s worth, via Reuters: Biden’s taxes showed that he and his wife Jill paid more than $346,000 in federal taxes and other payments for 2019 on an income of nearly $985,000_._ Trump, as is now widely known despite his refusal to share his tax returns, has paid next to nothing for most of the past decade. Prior to the debate, Trump accused Biden of refusing to agree to an inspection for hidden earpieces. Biden countered by revealing Trump had demanded that the debate moderator refrain from mentioning the number of people in the US who have died from Covid-19. And all that was before the debate actually started. Fox News Sunday anchor Chris Wallace was the moderator. He opened the debate with a question about the Supreme Court vacancy, which the candidates used as an opportunity to argue about the Affordable Care Act. Trump, tacking left, pretended to be an enemy of Big Pharma and an apologist for Bernie Sanders. As expected, he played the bully toward both Biden and Wallace. Biden called Trump the wrong guy at the wrong time and, after one extended back-and-forth sniping session, said QUOTE will you shut up, man? ENDQUOTE. Because Wallace declined to offer fact-checking, Trump was allowed to lie with impunity. But Biden spoke at times directly to the audience, appealing to the head and heartstrings over grave matters such as the pandemic. The next debate takes place on October 15. In other campaign news, a new poll by the Washington Post and ABC News showed Biden leading Trump in Pennsylvania by fifty four to forty five percent among likely voters. Amazon worker injuries growing There is a growing safety crisis at Amazon. A new report by the website Reveal news, based on company records obtained by the Center for Investigative Reporting, sheds light on the problem. The documents consist of weekly data from 2016 through 2019 from more than one hundred and fifty Amazon warehouses. They show that the company has profoundly misled lawmakers and the public about its mounting injury crisis. Amazon often points to the tens of millions of dollars it has invested to enhance safety practices. Yet Amazon’s injury rates have gone up each of the past four years. In 2019, Amazon fulfillment centers recorded fourteen thousand serious injuries. The overall rate of injuries was thirty three percent higher than in 2016 and nearly double the most recent industry standard, Reveal reports. The data back up the accounts of Amazon workers who say the company has used the robots to ratchet up production quotas. Now humans can’t keep up without hurting themselves. Injury rates are significantly higher at Amazon’s robotic warehouses than at its traditional sites. The robots bring items so quickly that the productivity expectations for workers have more than doubled. Workers called pickers previously had to grab and scan about one hundred items an hour. At robotic fulfillment centers, they were expected to handle up to four hundred an hour. And for years, injury rates have spiked during the weeks of Prime Day and Cyber Monday, contrary to Amazon’s public claims. Those two weeks had the highest rate of serious injuries for all of 2019. In May, Amazon chairman Jeff Bezos said QUOTE Nothing is more important than the health and well-being of our employees ENDQUOTE. Well, Jeff: prove it. Fusion energy breakthrough reported Scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology say they are on track to develop a compact nuclear fusion reactor – which, if true, could be a major breakthrough in the fight against climate change. The New York Times reports that the MIT scientists, through a spinoff company called Commonwealth Fusion Systems, expect to begin development of the reactor, called Sparc, next spring. They expect to finish construction in three or four years. If successful, they could build a power plant that uses fusion to generate electricity in the next decade. A fusion reactor would work differently than existing nuclear fission reactors, and mimic the process whereby the sun produces energy. The MIT announcement was accompanied by the publication yesterday of seven peer-reviewed papers in The Journal of Plasma Physics, in which researchers laid out the evidence that the Sparc reactor would succeed and produce as much as ten times the energy it consumes. The research QUOTE confirms that the design we’re working on is very likely to work ENDQUOTE, said Martin Greenwald, deputy director of MIT’s Plasma Science and Fusion Center and one of the project’s lead scientists. According to Greenwald, Sparc takes advantage of a newer technology that uses so-called high temperature superconductors that can produce a much higher magnetic field. Commonwealth Fusion said it would announce a location for Sparc in a few months. AND NOW FOR SOME QUICKER QUICKIES: A juror in the Breonna Taylor case claims that Kentucky’s Republican Attorney General Daniel Cameron misrepresented the grand jury’s deliberations and may not have presented all of the evidence they needed to see. The unidentified juror also said, through an attorney, that the panel was never presented with the option to indict two of the three police officers involved in Taylor’s killing. Cameron has said he will release a recording of the grand jury proceedings today on a judge’s order, the Washington Post reports. Let’s hear it! Amnesty International announced yesterday that government reprisals, including a freeze on its bank accounts, had forced the human rights group to abandon its work in India. Citing an incessant witch-hunt based on unfounded allegations, Amnesty India’s executive director, Avinash Kumar, said the government crackdown reeks of fear and repression. More than one hundred staff members will be laid off and the group’s work on such issues as police brutality will cease. Military clashes broke out Sunday in Nagorno-Karabakh, a separatist region within Azerbaijan that has been under the control of ethnic Armenian forces since 1994. Fighting continued yesterday, with each side blaming the other and each contradicting the other’s claims regarding casualties. Armenian officials claim Turkey has deployed fighter jets to aid Azerbaijan. A European Commission spokesman urged everyone to QUOTE do everything they can in order to prevent an all-out war from breaking out, because this is the last thing the region needs ENDQUOTE. Italian scientists reported Monday in the journal Nature Astronomy that they have found a network of salty ponds beneath the south pole of Mars, alongside a large underground lake. The lake is estimated to be twelve to eighteen miles across and buried one mile beneath the surface. The salt content keeps the water from freezing, and has scientists excited about the possibility for finding microbial life there. They say future expeditions should target this area of Mars. Let’s see them aliens! Sept 30, 2020 - AM Quickie HOSTS - Sam Seder & Lucie Steiner WRITER - Corey Pein PRODUCER - Dorsey Shaw EXECUTIVE PRODUCER - Brendan Finn

Pema Chodron Quote How about that quote from Pema Chodron, “Nothing ever goes away until it teaches us what we need to know?” Today I want to spend some time unpacking a quote that I often hear in yoga classes and splashed across social media. Every time I hear it or see it it makes me bristle. Short sound bites taken out of context often are that way for me. Give this video a thumbs up if you ever get upset by quotes taken out of context. Subscribe if you would like to see more videos like this. If you are new here, hello, welcome. Thank you for joining me. I have been a serious student of the lineage of Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche since summer of 2017. I have a teacher here in Victoria, Neil McKinlay who is a senior teacher of Dharma Ocean. I work closely with him and attend weekly dharma talks and meditation with him. I have take several courses and have taken both refuge vows and bodhisattva vows with Dharma Ocean. All this to say I have some understanding as a student of Buddhism and the lineage of Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche of which Pema Chodron is a part. After recently hearing this sound byte in a yin yoga class I thought, you know what, I am going to do some detective work and look at the context of this quote. It just doesn’t seem like something that Pema Chodron would say to me. One of my favourite books of hers is Start Where You Are. I have it on permanent repeat as I am also a student of lojong - they are a set of 59 slogans in Tibetan Buddhism used for mind training to open our hearts and awaken our mind. This book about lojong and I return to it again and again and so I have an ear for Pema Chodron. I guess I should talk about what bothers me about this quote out of context: “Nothing ever goes away until it teaches you what you need to know.” To me it is antithetical to Tibetan Buddhism in general in that we are training in opening to everything - our thoughts, emotions, situations, people.... We are not training in pushing things away. And secondly, it feels like it lacks compassion. To the person who has been diagnosed with a terminal illness, this quote on its own, is actually quite cruel. The terminal illness is not going away, even if they learn all the lessons in the world from it. So first thing I did was to look at what book this quote was in. The quote comes from her book: When Things Fall Apart: Heart Advice for Difficult Times. Even the title gave me some space around the quote: heart advice. I actually did not have to go very far into the book to find the compassion that I felt was missing from the sound byte. At the very opening of the book Pema Chodron talked about how the overarching theme of her book was the need for awakening a fearless compassion toward our own pain and the pain of others. On page two there was a quote I had highlighted saying, “please do not think meditation is a vacation from irritation.” As I read on there were more and more, “Buddha nature kicks our ass into being receptive,” “stop running away” and “move closer” and that was just chapter one. But for the sake of keeping this video short I will move right to the context of the quote which comes from Chapter 11 Non Aggression and the Maras, halfway through the book. Maras are obstacles. There are inner obstacles and outer obstacles. Leading up to the quote, Pema Chodron is talking about inner obstacles. Specifically she is talking about our own inner confusion. Right before the quote she says, perhaps there is no obstacle except our need to keep ourselves from being touched. The rest of the quote says: “Nothing ever really attacks us except our own confusion. Perhaps there is no solid obstacle except our own need to protect ourselves from being touched. If we run a hundred miles an hour to the other end of the continent in order to get away from the obstacle, we find the very same problem waiting for us when we arrive. It just keeps returning with new names, forms,
