One of the four fundamental states of matter
POPULARITY
Patrick Vanraes is a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Antwerp whose research into liquid plasmas has led him to believe that we have radically, completely, totally misunderstood what it means for something to be “plasma.” All presentations on the subject begin with a rote recitation of the fact that plasma is a fourth state of matter - solid, liquid, gas, then plasma. But Patrick makes the point that this is an incomprehensible perspective, because the phase change between solid - liquid - gas is one of motion. Each phase has more degrees of freedom than the previous one, and so reveals different macroscopic qualities of the substance. The transition to plasma is far stranger. Some component of it does include a greater range of motion, as the electron shells of the atoms bloom away from their ionic cores. But far more important is the structural, chemical changes that accompany plasma, which is exactly what leads Patrick to the conclusion that perhaps plasma isn't some strange exotic kind of matter - it's some latent capacity of matter that's far more ordinaryMAKE HISTORY WITH US THIS SUMMER:https://demystifysci.com/demysticon-2025PATREON https://www.patreon.com/c/demystifysciPARADIGM DRIFThttps://demystifysci.com/paradigm-drift-show00:00 Go!00:05:13 Cosmos and Plasma Complexity00:11:41 Defining Plasma Beyond Ionized Gas00:17:07 Applications and Implications of Plasma Understanding00:21:52 Plasma in Laboratory and Experimentation00:24:27 Plasma Formation in Gas vs. Liquid00:26:31 Plasma Research Fields00:31:15 Definition and Nature of Plasmas00:39:01 Phase Transitions and Plasma States00:42:11 Ionization and Conductivity in Metals00:48:31 Atomic Structure and Misconceptions00:49:54 Realism in Scientific Models00:52:30 Complexities in Education and Models00:55:38 Redefining Plasma and Conductivity01:00:07 Characteristics of Plasma01:11:05 Plasma Waves and Oscillations01:15:36 Particle Misconceptions01:20:59 Material Representation in Physics01:23:30 Stars and Material Conceptions01:29:38 Quasi-Particles and Limitations01:31:30 Beyond Models: Reality vs. Philosophy01:36:13 Phonon Theory of Liquids01:39:12 Relationship Between Phonons and Specific Heat01:40:25 The Temperature Dependency of Specific Heat01:43:35 Conceptualizing Quasi-Particles and Reality01:50:16 Exploring Underlying Structures in Physics01:57:05 The Philosophical Underpinning of Scientific Theories02:03:34 Plasma Physics, Redefined02:08:16 The Role of Skepticism and Prediction in Science02:12:26 Building Scientific Community and Collaboration02:16:50 Modeling a New Scientific Approach02:17:28 Upcoming Presentations on Plasma Models #plasmaphysics, #astrophysics, #experimentalphysics, #electricuniverse, #theoreticalphysics, philosophypodcast, #sciencepodcast, #longformpodcast ABOUS US: Anastasia completed her PhD studying bioelectricity at Columbia University. Eric Lerner is a popular science writer, plasma physicist, and long-time collaborator of the late Nobel laureate Hannes Alfvén. He's also one of the featured speakers at our Beyond the Big Bang event this summer in Sesimbra, Portugal. For over thirty years, Lerner has been a leading voice in plasma cosmology and a critic of Big Bang cosmology, who argued for a non-expanding, steady state universe as the central claim of his landmark book The Big Bang Never Happened (affiliate link to puchase: https://amzn.to/4jEez8H). Our conversation dives into the history and foundations of plasma cosmology, from early Birkeland current experiments in the Arctic that revealed the electrical nature of the aurora, to the role of plasma dynamics in the shape and behavior of galaxies. All the hits are in here - from Halton Arp, whose Atlas of Peculiar Galaxies seriously challenged the way that mainstream cosmologists interpret redshift, to the electromagnetic forces often overlooked in mainstream cosmology, to the filamentary plasma structures and cosmic-scale currents that strain the limits of the standard model. This is a deep exploration of alternative cosmology, electric universe theories, and the scientists behind them — from Fred Hoyle to Anthony Peratt — who refused to patch a dying theory and instead asked instead if the universe might be eternal.MAKE HISTORY WITH US THIS SUMMER:https://demystifysci.com/demysticon-2025PATREON https://www.patreon.com/c/demystifysciPARADIGM DRIFThttps://demystifysci.com/paradigm-drift-show00:00 Go!00:05:59 – The Cosmological Pendulum 00:14:09 – Knowledge and Societal Progress 00:22:18 – Big Bang Origins & Ideological Influence 00:29:04 – Technological Stagnation Since the 1970s 00:32:02 – Ideology Replacing Empiricism in Science 00:36:14 – Gravity vs. Electromagnetism in Cosmology 00:41:02 – Evolution of Scientific Funding Models 00:51:11 – Birkeland Currents & Plasma Discoveries 00:56:25 – Centralization of Postwar Science 01:00:18 – Orthodoxy in Medicine 01:00:59 – Decline of Fundamental Research 01:04:39 – Plasma Cosmology vs. Dark Matter 01:08:52 – Capitalism and Research Priorities 01:14:22 – Sustaining Independent Science 01:15:16 – Birkeland, Alfvén & Plasma History 01:22:24 – Einstein's Rise & Cultural Legacy 01:31:05 – General Relativity and Elitism 01:34:44 – Chapman's Math vs. Empirics 01:37:12 – Alfvén's Plasma Breakthroughs 01:43:39 – Plasma Physics vs. Big Bang Theories 01:47:39 – Nobel Prize & MHD's Hidden Flaws 01:58:00 – Filamentary Plasmas vs. MHD 02:00:47 – Pseudoplasmas and MHD Limits 02:02:58 – Defining Plasma as a State of Matter 02:06:00 – Where Plasma Exists in Nature 02:11:17 – The Myth of Mathematical Models 02:21:10 – Scientific vs. Aesthetic Cosmology 02:29:55 – Failed Big Bang Predictions 02:36:01 – Alternatives to the Expanding Universe 02:43:09 – Large-Scale Structures and Cosmic Age 02:50:10 – Public Science and Open Debate 02:55:16 – Toward a New Cosmological Paradigm#plasma #bigbang #darkmatter #electricuniverse, #cosmology, #astrophysics, #scientificrevolution, #fusionenergy, #philosophypodcast, #sciencepodcast, #longformpodcast ABOUS US: Anastasia completed her PhD studying bioelectricity at Columbia University. The federal government is accelerating its support of pathbreaking fusion power research, ramping up three fusion research hubs and developing private sector engagement in next generation nuclear power. In this episode of Grid Talk, host Marty Rosenberg talks with Kramer Akli who is with the Department of Energy's Office of Fusion Energy Sciences.“What we are hoping on for the hubs in four years is to give us a clear picture which inertial fusion approach we can pursue,” said Akli.DOE has committed to spend $42 million over four years to support research into the use of lasers to fire up fusion, the process that powers the sun. This comes after researchers achieved a significant milestone in 2022 called "scientific breakeven." “For the first time in history we have achieved ignition and that you can get more energy out of the target,” he said. Overall, DOE is spending $500 million dollars a year on fusion.“With these three national hubs, we have leading institutions, but they bring together more than 30 institutions from national labs, universities, and the private sector to tackle some of these challenges.” “What we have today that we didn't have five, 10 or 20 years ago is we have a private sector, more than 50 companies, that are pursuing fusion energy and we have attracted more than $6 billion dollars in investments,” said Akli.Kramer Akli has been with the Department of Energy since 2016.He has a PhD in Applied Science from the University of California, Davis. He received a BS in Plasma Physics from National Research Nuclear University MEPhI (Moscow Engineering Physics Institute).
Dr. Ellen Zweibel is the W. L. Kraushaar Professor of Astronomy and Physics, and the Vilas Distinguished Achievement Professor at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Ellen is a theoretical astrophysicist who specializes in plasma astrophysics. Her studies examine electricity and magnetism in the cosmos, including phenomena like sun spots, the solar cycle, and high energy electromagnetic emissions (e.g. x-rays, gamma rays, and radio waves) from stars and galaxies. Ellen's interests outside of science include creative writing, art, and exercise. She has recorded her thoughts and sketches in a journal since 1977, and drawing is a wonderful way for Ellen to see details in her surroundings that she might otherwise miss. In addition, Ellen has explored her artistic side through sculpting clay and painting. As far as exercise, Ellen runs at least 45 minutes every day. She received her bachelor's degree in Mathematics from the University of Chicago and her PhD in Astrophysical Sciences from Princeton University. Ellen served as a faculty member at the University of Colorado for over 20 years before joining the faculty at the University of Wisconsin in 2003. Ellen has received numerous awards and honors during her career, including being elected as a Fellow of the American Physical Society and being awarded the American Physical Society's Maxwell Prize for Plasma Physics. Ellen joined us for an interview to talk about her experiences in life and science.

How do we harness the power of the stars to deliver clean energy on Earth? It has been a collective goal – and, perhaps, an impending imperative – for human civilization to secure renewable energy sources for its present and future needs. The team at Proxima Fusion (https://www.proximafusion.com/about), led by co-founder and CEO Francesco Sciortino (https://www.linkedin.com/in/francesco-sciortino-aa340180/), is focused on one approach to build a fusion power plant. Their use of a “stellarator”, a wildly complex machine that until recently has been literally impossible to build, could prove the economic viability of the design and its underlying physics. Headquartered in the booming ‘tough tech' center of Munich, Germany, and drawing in expertise globally, Francesco shares with us how his team of scientist-engineers are leveraging prior learnings from tokamak systems as well as integrating institutional knowledge from their stellarator's predecessor, the famed Wendelstein 7-X reactor built by the Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics.P.S. Thank you to our tough tech champions. Special shoutout to Erika – you are our first Advocate member. We really appreciate your support! If you'd like to follow Erika's example, take a look at our pay-if-you-can membership options so you can help us bring Tough Tech Today to more folks!
GUEST OVERVIEW: Wallace Manheimer was born in New York City and was educated in the New York City public schools. His high school sent six graduating students (including him) to MIT.At MIT, he majored in physics and got both an S.B. and a Ph.D. from MIT. Shortly after receiving his Ph.D., he came to The Naval Research Lab (NRL) in Washington DC and began what became a more than 50-year career here, both as a civil servant and as a contractor scientific consultant. He is very proud that he was able to spend that much time with a single employer and believes that NRL has been, and hopefully will remain, a tremendous asset to the Navy, the country, and the world. At NRL he was in the Plasma Physics division and spent about half his time on fusion and the other half on various problems in national defense. He has authored or co-authored about 150 reviewed scientific papers in these areas.

Episode 113: A Conversation about Counterfeit Component Detection with Dr. Eyal WeissWe are all aware of the “oldest profession in the world”. Perhaps the second oldest profession is counterfeiting. Whenever a product is introduced, a counterfeit version soon follows. While the electronics industry has experienced counterfeit components from its inception, recent events such as the pandemic and supply chain shortages have fueled the counterfeit industry.Statistics by the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) reveal that the counterfeiting of electronic parts in the US alone, cost the chip industry more than $7.5 billion in revenue annually. According to new data from the ERAI, a global information board for counterfeiting, reports of counterfeit electronic products are growing. Although it is difficult to put an exact figure on just how many counterfeit products are in circulation, estimates suggest that consumer and industrial businesses lose approximately $250 billion each year due to counterfeit parts. To talk more about counterfeit components and detection technologies, I invited Dr. Eyal Weiss, Founder and CTO of Cybord to be my guest. Dr. Weiss received his Ph.D. in Electronic and Computer Engineering from BGU (Ben-Gurion University) in IsraelAs well as a Masters in Plasma Physics and bachelors cum laude in Mechanical Engineering from the Technion–Israel Institute of Technology. He worked as a researcher on pulsed plasma at Soreq Research Center (SNRC). He then worked as a technology department manager in the high-tech fiber-optics industry. He was the technology manager at Lynx Photonics and then at Explay, developing state-of-the-art Silicon and optical chips production, packaging, and assembly production lines. He developed a new fiber-pigtailing and packaging technology and built full-scale production lines utilizing this new technology. He returned to Soreq SNRC and for 15 years served as manager and leading scientist of the R&D Systems Department. He built mass-production lines and assembly lines for new sensors technology and developed their test equipment. He has twice received the prestigious Israel Defense Prize. In 2018, he founded and became CTO of Cybord, developing electronic component qualification and authentication technologies. He is a member of the Israel Innovation Authority, Euramet, SAE, and IPC committees. He specializes in multidisciplinary technology development and has received significant awards and accolades in the fields of machine learning, plasma physics, optical assemblies, laser technology, and electromagnetics. Dr. Weiss is an expert in technology development and manufacturing technology and has published over 20 peer-review articles, 4 patents, and a book, and, I'm happy to say, he's my guest on this episode of the Reliability Matters podcast.
Fusion power, clean and limitless, long elusive to scientists, may be headed our way sooner than many suspected thanks to a breakthrough experiment in early December at the Lawrence Livermore National Lab (LLNL) in California. In this episode of Grid Talk, host Marty Rosenberg talks with Annie Kritcher, the physicist who designed the successful experiment that recreated the energy source of the sun.She explained: “What we're doing here is essentially creating a miniature star in a lab about the size of a human hair to half the size of the human hair. We have 192 giant lasers and when we say giant, that means that the whole system that is used to create this laser energy and all the details associated with it, it's the size of three football fields when you put all of the 192 laser beams together.” Fusion research has been going on for decades, but the December experiment is a significant breakthrough and represents a new approach. “The thing that's different this time is that for the first time we've actually demonstrated in the laboratory that we can achieve fusion energy gain in a controlled way. Before that, we've never actually generated fusion energy output that was controlled in a laboratory setting. This result motivates and is a proof of principal for all the different approaches out there,” said Kritcher. That increases the likelihood of success.“There's also a huge resurgence in the number of people working in this area and the different approaches that are being looked at and when you have that many people looking at a problem, the progress is highly accelerated.”Dr. Annie Kritcher is the design lead within the Inertial Confinement Fusion (ICF) team as part of the National Ignition Facility at LLNL. Dr. Kritcher started at LLNL as a summer intern in 2004. She earned a PhD in Nuclear Engineering and Plasma Physics and a MS Nuclear Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley. Annie earned her BS in Nuclear Engineering and Radiological Sciences at the University of Michigan.

I have an inquisitive & skeptic mind, I'm an independent researcher, self published author, artist, web designer, video producer, star gazer, philosopher & nature lover. Have traveled around the world, and lived in several countries in North America and Europe. I believe traveling & living overseas, has allowed me to have a better understanding about human nature. My background: Art & Design BA. Consultant of Green & non-toxic Interiors, Edible Gardens & lived off-grid. I am fluent in English & Spanish; can read some Italian, French, Swedish and Latin. Raised in the Catholic faith. My Spiritual journey began in my early 20's when I traveled to India, New York & Mexico to study Hatha Yoga & Meditation. Learned several eastern healing modalities and worked as a Fitness Coach. I created Mythos Decoded, in hope to inspire and awaken an interest in reading and researching the works of ancient Greek Historians, World Mythologies, Sacred Texts and Plasma Physics, in order to comprehend our dysfunctional civilization & learn more about the fascinating, and often very frightening world our ancestors experienced & incredibly, were able to survive the catastrophes; analyzing the information through a new lens & with a new perspective from Plasma Astrophysics which unlike mainstream theories, it is proven in the laboratory. Looking for answers to the questions we might have regarding "Reality," the "Meaning & Purpose of Life" & "Good & Evil" in the texts left to us by the ancients and the many epics and stories of World Creations, which perhaps were written as the true sagas of our forebears, Earth and of the Solar System. I encourage you to analyze the information and sources, ponder on its meaning and come up with your own conclusions. In my analysis, I attempt to be objective & respectful. Peace be with you! In this episode I'm starting to explore another interesting scientific topic that has recently made a big media splash—nuclear fusion. For decades the promise of nuclear fusion has been held out as the ultimate in clean energy sources—the same energy as the sun, with no transuranic radioactive waste stream. Just fusing hydrogen together to make helium and boundless energy. The problem is that it is very difficult to simulate the sun. Even in the core of the sun where temperatures are measured in millions of degrees, and the pressure is higher than anywhere in the solar system, fusion is not a fast or efficient process. I guess that's good for us. If it were the sun would rapidly burn out in a huge supernova. As it is, the sun will happily burn hydrogen for about 10 billion years before it starts running short. A proton in the core of the sun can bounce around freely for billions of years without ever getting fused to another proton. It is this challenge that researchers on earth have been trying to solve for the past 50 years, without much success. Today I'm going to be interviewing a team of researchers working on this problem to find out just how close we are to practical fusion. E = mc2? The general theory of relativity? The quantum nature of the atom? The debates could rage for days. Looking back on my own education, I'd isolate two really important ones. The first is Newton's FIRST LAW of motion:A body at rest will stay at rest or a body moving in a straight line with a constant speed will not change in its motion unless acted upon by a force. The second is probably Dalton's Law of Multiple Proportions, otherwise interpreted as the modern theory of atoms. You know, that everything in nature is made of up individual molecules and those molecules are made up of atoms. These ideas run counter to much of our direct, daily experience. At least that kind of experience we've had in common with our ancestors for thousands of years. So please don't ask me to pick between the two. Both Newton and Dalton's laws are crucial.Putting those ideas together - which involves a lot of mathematical work - physicists arrived at the modern, kinetic theory of gases. There are LOTS of details and lots of implications, but one way to understand it goes like this:Gases - like the air we breathe - is made up of molecules and those molecules move at different speeds. Their average speed tells us the temperature. The higher the temperature, the higher the average speed. But also - and importantly - the higher the temperature the wider the spread on molecular velocities. In other words, all around you there are gazillions of tiny molecules. At room temperature, they're moving at 1000 miles per hour, on average. Of course, some are moving really very slowly, and some are moving quite fast. A tiny fraction of those molecules are moving, really, really quickly, more than twice as fast as average. But we can't see any of it because they're just too small.PlasmasWhen gases get really hot, the individual atoms inside the gas begin to break down. Their collisions have too much energy. The impacts are too powerful. The electrons and nuclei split apart and form separate components of the gas. Perhaps not surprisingly, this often - but not always - coincides with a very low density of atoms. When a gas has its charged particles ripped apart, we call that gas a plasma. Plasma's are kind of a BIG DEAL in astrophysics. If you've stood around a bonfire, you've seen a plasma. Those tongues of fire are little pockets of air whose atoms have been ripped apart by the intense heat. The intense speeds of electrically charged particles zipping past each other is what causes those tongues of fire to give off electromagnetic radiation - otherwise known as light. We discussed another sort of plasma in our last mini-series on the ALPHA particle, where we discussed the solar wind and the Earth's magnetosphere. Of course, the outer bits of the sun itself are in a plasma, hence all the glowing we see every day. And that giant plasma ball we call our sun spits a constant stream of charged particles our way - the solar wind. The magnetic field generated by our Earth's spinning core captures much of those charged particles well before they hit the Earth's atmosphere. Thereby protecting both it and us.Those particles are confined so the so-called Van Allen belts which hold the plasma - a very low density plasma compared to what you'd see in a bonfire - thousands of miles above the Earth's surface.Magnetic fields contain that solar wind by bending the trajectories of the individual particles - it curves their motion. That's just what magnetic fields do. The strength of the magnetic field means that those particles can - at best - move in circles. The faster the particle, the bigger the circle. Approximately anyway. Like any gas of particles, the van Allen belt plasma has particles moving at very low speeds and very high speeds. Very small circles and very large circles. The average speed - in part - determines the approximate size of those van Allen radiation belts.Particles moving stupidly fast through a magnetic field - like cosmic rays from space - will also bend, but not enough to get trapped. Instead they fly through the magnetosphere and into the upper atmosphere. Breaking apart by spreading their energy around, leaving us to content with that debris of particles.Plasmas in SpaceYou might wonder where those high energy particles from space - those cosmic rays - come from.Well, there's a lot of stars in space and subsequently a lot of plasmas. Stellar winds blow off particles all the time. But that's not really enough energy to generate cosmic rays. But sometimes, when stars explode as supernovae, even more charged particles get ejected into space. Those astrophysical gases - plasmas - often give us beautiful photographs to look at here on Earth. But don't be fooled. The density of those gorgeous gas clouds - even in star forming reasons like the Horsehead Nebula - aren't really that visible to the naked eye. Even if you were right up on it, you'd probably have to leave the camera shutter open for a bit to capture all that light. That is to say, that astrophysical plasmas are pretty sparse. By comparison our atmosphere feels like a thick, pea soup. The particles inside those astrophysical plasmas don't really smash into each other like they do down here on Earth. Rather, the particles interact via the longer range, electromagnetic force.Astrophysicts will sometimes call them Colisionless plasmas to emphasize that fact. The gas behaves less like a game of billiards and more like… traffic… or a flock of birds.Fermi AccelerationIn a diffuse, astrophysical plasma there are really three components to worry about. The electrons with negative charge, the ions with positive charge and the magnetic field itself. The importance of the magnetic field can be felt even here in our solar system. Like the Earth, the sun has a magnetic field. A bit one. Unlike the Earth, the sun is constantly producing a large stream of energetic particles, so things are a little… hectic. Every once in a while, the sun's magnetic field gets so twisted up that a little bit pinches off. That's right. The magnetic field pinches off. It heads outward into space. Sometimes towards us. And a large chunk of the sun's outer plasma sometimes goes with it.These are called coronal mass ejections, and they're a big deal. VERY out of equilibrium, they say. Like a tsunami of plasma, a coronal mass ejection can wreck havoc on our satellites and other electronics. On earth, these kinds of events are experienced as a shockwave in the solar wind. And - so far as we can tell anyway - shockwaves, even bigger shockwaves, like you'd find in a supernovae - are the things responsible for accelerating cosmic rays out of astrophysical plasmas.Sources for Magnetic ShockwavesSo what causes these shockwaves to pass through interstellar clouds of electrically charged particles? Well supernovae for sure. Those exploding stars can be brighter than entire galaxies, so it's probably no surprise they're sending out a lot of sudden shocks during their expansion. There are a few other candidates.Neutron stars - city size nuclei left over from one of those supernovae - are really extreme objects. They're just on the cusp of becoming black holes, and the only thing keeping them from collapsing is the strong nuclear force: you know, gluons and pions and that kind of subnuclear goo.So they're very dense. So dense that the force of gravity on their surface is a couple of hundred billion times stronger than on earth. The gravity is so strong that we would be immediately crushed into thin layer of nothing but neutrons. Pretty extreme.Just like neutrons themselves have a tiny magnetic field, a neutron star - composed of a gazillion such neutrons - can have a really big magnetic field. A massive one, as it turns out, that spins as the neutron star does, sweeping our a huge wave of electromagnetic energy. That wild, sweeping motion together with those ginormous magnetic fields surely has a massive impact on any nearby plasmas. Fermi AccelerationShockwaves accelerate particles in a plasma into cosmic rays, but not all in one go. It's not like a baseball bat. It's more convoluted than that. The moral of the story is that some particles pass through the shockwave, back and forth, picking up an an enormous amount of energy as they go. That's the standard explanation - filed under technical phrases like diffuse shock acceleration or a first order Fermi acceleration. It's a funny thing to think about. Initiatively, its feels like a surfer passing through a wave, going faster each time. Which makes NO SENSE. Of course, that picture is wrong. The thing to keep in mind is that the gas of charged particles - the plasma - is VERY far from the normal, equilibrium thermodynamics we experience down here on Earth. The shockwave is by definition moving faster than the speed of sound in a gas. A shockwave will also very likely be spread out broadly with multiple fronts. Some a little ahead, some a little behind. This texture in the electromagnetic field can give electrically charged particles of the plasma a lot of shock fronts to bounce off of, picking up energy each time. Eventually they can get boosted to such a high energy that they shoot off into space - and eventually - towards us.Next TimeWhen those high energy cosmic rays smash through our magnetosphere and collide with molecules in the upper atmosphere. A cascade of particle debris is formed. But almost all of it decays before it hits the Earth.Indeed, down here, on Earth, the vast majority of those debris particles that we can see are muons. Those muons are moving really fast. Very close to the speed of light. Which makes sense given the outrageous energy the original cosmic ray had. But muons are something a curiosity. We don't normally see muons hanging around in other contexts, like chemistry. That' because they only live for an average of 2.2. microseconds. While extremely long lived by particle standards, the muon's life really isn't that long. Those muons are born way up at altitudes of nearly 30 miles above sea level, which is good because that's far above where human normally live - or even where we fly. If we were out there, being bombarded by cosmic ray and pions and who knows what else, we would probably get TOTALLY FRIED. But this also presents a puzzle. LIGHT can only travel about half a mile or so in 2.2 microseconds. So how it these muons can travel well over 10 times that distance without decaying?

We will be talking with Edward M. about his new book that will be out next year. At this time the manuscript is nearly finished. The topic tonight is how myth has defined many things in our society and that myth, in fact, is history. With the advances in plasma physics, a whole new understanding of our ancient past has come into the light, and the mystical stories about the sun and the planets are in fact true. Edward puts forth the textual evidence that not only was the solar system unstable before the 6th century BCE, but that the ancient Egyptians actually witnessed and recorded the birth of the solar system. Edward F. Malkowski, has a lifelong interest in history, particularly ancient history with a special interest in philosophy and the development of religious beliefs from ancient to modern times. With the opinion that the ancient biblical stories in Genesis were based on historical fact, during the late 1990's he began investigating such a possibility which led to his first book Sons of God - Daughters of Men. This led to a deep interest in the origin of civilization, the curiously large monuments of Egypt's Old Kingdom, particularly the Sphinx, and the influence Egyptian philosophy and culture exerted in the ancient world. Two more books were the result: Before The Pharaohs and The Spiritual Technology of Ancient Egypt, plus several more following this same line of adventure. His professional background is finance and business administration, and he is also a software developer with interests in business strategy and philosophy as it relates to the advancement of technology.

Fusion Power May Be Closer Than You Think Fusion research and development have been ongoing for decades, and many people probably believe a fusion power system will remain out of reach for decades longer. But the truth is that more than 100 tokamaks have been constructed and the science behind fusion is well-understood. What has been elusive is generating net energy from a fusion reaction, that is, getting more energy out than goes in to heat the plasma. One company that believes it is on the cusp of a breakthrough is Cambridge, Massachusetts-based Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS). Bob Mumgaard, the company's CEO, was a guest on The POWER Podcast and explained why he's excited about the future. One big reason is that a groundbreaking series of seven papers were recently published and peer reviewed in a special edition of the Journal of Plasma Physics, validating CFS's approach to commercial fusion energy. The papers, written in collaboration with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's (MIT's) Plasma Science and Fusion Center, are the first peer-reviewed publications from any private commercial fusion company that verify a compact fusion device will achieve net energy. Mumgaard acknowledged that his company, which is only about two years old, has capitalized on much of the previous research conducted by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), universities, national labs, and other countries, to get to where it is today. In fact, CFS spun out from MIT and gained a lot of knowledge from the Alcator C-Mod project—a compact, high-magnetic field tokamak that the DOE funded at the university. In 2016, C-Mod broke its own record for plasma pressure in a magnetically confined device, an important measurement for fusion. “It's a really interesting story of the long history of fusion and all these stepwise improvements that have been done. And, you know, most of these have all been towards making a machine, basically a fusion machine, that can create the conditions that are necessary inside of it, which is namely having a very, very small amount of fuel, like a grain of rice worth of fuel, that is at very hot temperatures—like 100 million degrees, so hotter than the center of the sun—and at densities where you get enough reactions, and insulated well enough so that it doesn't cool itself off, to the point where you can make more power from fusion than it took to heat it up. That's called breakeven or net-energy,” Mumgaard explained. CFS is now developing and testing new high-temperature superconductor (HTS) magnets, which will allow for smaller, faster, and less-expensive tokamaks using the science developed on Alcator C-Mod and other devices. “We're now starting to assemble a full-scale first-of-a-kind, 20-Tesla, multi-ton magnet that will really push this technology way beyond what anyone has done before,” said Mumgaard. “That's at the parameter range that you need to build these high-field compact fusion tokamaks.” Once the HTS magnets are finalized, CFS will utilize them in a demonstration unit called SPARC, which could be the world's first fusion device to produce more energy than it consumes. Mumgaard expects construction on that machine to commence next summer. Once that system is complete, “You'll be able to show up, push a button, and make a whole bunch of excess energy—more energy than it took to run the fusion plasma for the very first time. And that feels kind of like the Wright Brothers moment for fusion,” Mumgaard said.
Welcome to Majority.FM's AM QUICKIE! Brought to you by justcoffee.coop TODAY'S HEADLINES: Joe Biden faced Donald Trump last night in the first of three presidential debates. Trump tried to make it Wrestlemania, but Biden gave as good as he got. Meanwhile, internal company documents show that Amazon has effectively covered up a major safety crisis at its warehouses. It got worse after they brought in robots. And lastly, a group of scientists have presented evidence that they have a new technique to produce a compact nuclear fusion reactor. If it works, that could be great news on the climate change front. THESE ARE THE STORIES YOU NEED TO KNOW: Biden: "Shut up, man" The presidential candidates faced off onstage for the first time last night at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio. Hours before the debate, Joe Biden released his tax returns and called on Trump to do the same. For what it’s worth, via Reuters: Biden’s taxes showed that he and his wife Jill paid more than $346,000 in federal taxes and other payments for 2019 on an income of nearly $985,000_._ Trump, as is now widely known despite his refusal to share his tax returns, has paid next to nothing for most of the past decade. Prior to the debate, Trump accused Biden of refusing to agree to an inspection for hidden earpieces. Biden countered by revealing Trump had demanded that the debate moderator refrain from mentioning the number of people in the US who have died from Covid-19. And all that was before the debate actually started. Fox News Sunday anchor Chris Wallace was the moderator. He opened the debate with a question about the Supreme Court vacancy, which the candidates used as an opportunity to argue about the Affordable Care Act. Trump, tacking left, pretended to be an enemy of Big Pharma and an apologist for Bernie Sanders. As expected, he played the bully toward both Biden and Wallace. Biden called Trump the wrong guy at the wrong time and, after one extended back-and-forth sniping session, said QUOTE will you shut up, man? ENDQUOTE. Because Wallace declined to offer fact-checking, Trump was allowed to lie with impunity. But Biden spoke at times directly to the audience, appealing to the head and heartstrings over grave matters such as the pandemic. The next debate takes place on October 15. In other campaign news, a new poll by the Washington Post and ABC News showed Biden leading Trump in Pennsylvania by fifty four to forty five percent among likely voters. Amazon worker injuries growing There is a growing safety crisis at Amazon. A new report by the website Reveal news, based on company records obtained by the Center for Investigative Reporting, sheds light on the problem. The documents consist of weekly data from 2016 through 2019 from more than one hundred and fifty Amazon warehouses. They show that the company has profoundly misled lawmakers and the public about its mounting injury crisis. Amazon often points to the tens of millions of dollars it has invested to enhance safety practices. Yet Amazon’s injury rates have gone up each of the past four years. In 2019, Amazon fulfillment centers recorded fourteen thousand serious injuries. The overall rate of injuries was thirty three percent higher than in 2016 and nearly double the most recent industry standard, Reveal reports. The data back up the accounts of Amazon workers who say the company has used the robots to ratchet up production quotas. Now humans can’t keep up without hurting themselves. Injury rates are significantly higher at Amazon’s robotic warehouses than at its traditional sites. The robots bring items so quickly that the productivity expectations for workers have more than doubled. Workers called pickers previously had to grab and scan about one hundred items an hour. At robotic fulfillment centers, they were expected to handle up to four hundred an hour. And for years, injury rates have spiked during the weeks of Prime Day and Cyber Monday, contrary to Amazon’s public claims. Those two weeks had the highest rate of serious injuries for all of 2019. In May, Amazon chairman Jeff Bezos said QUOTE Nothing is more important than the health and well-being of our employees ENDQUOTE. Well, Jeff: prove it. Fusion energy breakthrough reported Scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology say they are on track to develop a compact nuclear fusion reactor – which, if true, could be a major breakthrough in the fight against climate change. The New York Times reports that the MIT scientists, through a spinoff company called Commonwealth Fusion Systems, expect to begin development of the reactor, called Sparc, next spring. They expect to finish construction in three or four years. If successful, they could build a power plant that uses fusion to generate electricity in the next decade. A fusion reactor would work differently than existing nuclear fission reactors, and mimic the process whereby the sun produces energy. The MIT announcement was accompanied by the publication yesterday of seven peer-reviewed papers in The Journal of Plasma Physics, in which researchers laid out the evidence that the Sparc reactor would succeed and produce as much as ten times the energy it consumes. The research QUOTE confirms that the design we’re working on is very likely to work ENDQUOTE, said Martin Greenwald, deputy director of MIT’s Plasma Science and Fusion Center and one of the project’s lead scientists. According to Greenwald, Sparc takes advantage of a newer technology that uses so-called high temperature superconductors that can produce a much higher magnetic field. Commonwealth Fusion said it would announce a location for Sparc in a few months. AND NOW FOR SOME QUICKER QUICKIES: A juror in the Breonna Taylor case claims that Kentucky’s Republican Attorney General Daniel Cameron misrepresented the grand jury’s deliberations and may not have presented all of the evidence they needed to see. The unidentified juror also said, through an attorney, that the panel was never presented with the option to indict two of the three police officers involved in Taylor’s killing. Cameron has said he will release a recording of the grand jury proceedings today on a judge’s order, the Washington Post reports. Let’s hear it! Amnesty International announced yesterday that government reprisals, including a freeze on its bank accounts, had forced the human rights group to abandon its work in India. Citing an incessant witch-hunt based on unfounded allegations, Amnesty India’s executive director, Avinash Kumar, said the government crackdown reeks of fear and repression. More than one hundred staff members will be laid off and the group’s work on such issues as police brutality will cease. Military clashes broke out Sunday in Nagorno-Karabakh, a separatist region within Azerbaijan that has been under the control of ethnic Armenian forces since 1994. Fighting continued yesterday, with each side blaming the other and each contradicting the other’s claims regarding casualties. Armenian officials claim Turkey has deployed fighter jets to aid Azerbaijan. A European Commission spokesman urged everyone to QUOTE do everything they can in order to prevent an all-out war from breaking out, because this is the last thing the region needs ENDQUOTE. Italian scientists reported Monday in the journal Nature Astronomy that they have found a network of salty ponds beneath the south pole of Mars, alongside a large underground lake. The lake is estimated to be twelve to eighteen miles across and buried one mile beneath the surface. The salt content keeps the water from freezing, and has scientists excited about the possibility for finding microbial life there. They say future expeditions should target this area of Mars. Let’s see them aliens! Sept 30, 2020 - AM Quickie HOSTS - Sam Seder & Lucie Steiner WRITER - Corey Pein PRODUCER - Dorsey Shaw EXECUTIVE PRODUCER - Brendan Finn

Dr. Amelia Greig of the University of Texas at El Paso's Center for Space Exploration and Technology Research is on the Cold Star Project to talk about her experience. We're looking into both her own experience as a student and professor, and that of her graduate students in today's programs. Dr. Greig earned an Australian National University doctorate in plasma physics & electrical propulsion, a Postdoctorate in Plasma Physics at CalTech, and taught aerospace propulsion, space environment and spacecraft thermal control at California Polytechnic State University before moving to the University of Texas. I wanted to hear from "boots on the ground" about what's going on in academia regarding smallsats. So we cover what kind of courses students are interested in, the hands-on opportunities they're being given in addition to classroom theory, and Dr. Greig's vision for the future. In addition, she shares her thoughts on what graduate students can and should be doing before and as graduation approaches so they can maximize their job opportunities. Networking done well during this time can pay off strongly into their career. You can connect with Dr. Greig at adgreig@utep.edu Talk to Cold Star: https://coldstartech.com/bookcall

Dr Axel Lorenz is a physics engineer who has worked in the international thermonuclear fusion energy research for the last twenty-five years. In 2004 he began his work on project co-ordination of Wendelstein 7-X at the Max-Planck-Institut for Plasma Physics in Greifswald, Germany. Fusion, the nuclear reaction that powers the Sun and the stars, is a potential source of safe, non-carbon emitting and virtually limitless energy. Building on the example of the Wendelstein 7-X, this talk aims to illustrate the physical basics, implementation concepts and challenges on the road ahead for a viable thermonuclear fusion power plant.
In September 2018 Tina Persson attended the annual Max Planck alumni meeting in Berlin and had a chance to speak with the professor for Applied Mathematics and Physics Dr. Magda Schiegl. Magda Schiegl made her PhD in Theoretical Plasma Physics at the Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics in 1996 and then had a long career in the financial and energy industry. In 2009 she decided to come back to science and teaching, but this time, instead of theoretical plasma physics research, she chose the practical field of Risk Management and Applied Mathematics. She got a professorship position at the University of Applied Science in Cologne and later moved to Landschut, Germany. In this interview, Magda reflects upon how her experience as a PhD influenced her career and shares a tip on how to combine interests for the industry and practical problems with the passion for scientific research and education. Fusing the energy of the sun and start-ups is the topic of this podcast, where we find out how Tokamak Energy is planning to recreate the power of the sun... on a business park in Oxfordshire, and thus deliver almost limitless renewable energy.Physicist and communications consultant at Tokamak Energy, and polar explorer and conqueror of Everest, Dr Melanie Windridge, explains how nuclear fusion is not science fiction, but an energy source that will be clean, green and safe.Fusion energy has famously always been 30 years away from commercial utilisation, starting from the first international agreement to build a fusion reactor by the leaders of the USA and USSR, Reagan and Gorbachev, in 1985. There is still no clarity on when this massive global initiative will start producing energy commercially.Tokamak Energy, which started in 2009, is developing a small scale fusion reactor, which recently reached a temperature hotter than the centre of the Sun, 15 million degrees, and they plan to be producing industrial scale energy by 2025.Melanie who has a PhD in Plasma Physics from Imperial College London shares the history of fusion energy from the development of the ITER (International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor) and the JET (Joint European Thorus) to the current race for fusion energy which is now being led by start-ups around the world.Highlights of this episode:What is fusion energy how does it compare to fission nuclear energyRecent history of the developments in fusion energy and why the tokamak is a promising approachCurrent race to develop the first commercial fusion energy reactorCurrent developments at Tokamak Energy and their future plansCriticism of fusion energy and how we can overcome these challengesHow being an outdoor adventurer combined with her science background has allowed her to inspire othersHow she overcame initial difficulties working in a male dominated areaUseful links:Tokamak Energy: https://www.tokamakenergy.co.uk/Recent news release: https://www.tokamakenergy.co.uk/hotter-than-the-centre-of-the-sun-uk-prototype-reaches-15-million-degrees-paving-the-way-for-commercial-fusion-energy/ Melanie Windridge’s personal website: http://melaniewindridge.co.uk/Melanie’s book - Aurora: In search of the Nothern Lights: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/28014506-auroraNuclear Fusion as a renewable resource: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuclear_power_proposed_as_renewable_energy#Fusion_fuel_supplyChapters:[00:50] What is nuclear fusion?[05:00] Why is nuclear fusion energy always still 30 years away?[10:00] Tokamak Energy[13:00] A worldwide collaboration to create ITER and a big meeting between Reagan and Gorbachev[15:00] 3 things that affects output of fusion energy[17:00] Magnetic technology has moved on[19:00] Pivoting to making power stations with small tokamaks[20:40] Milestones to commercialise Tokamak Energy[23:00] Science is difficult to predict[26:00] Climate change is happening[29:00] Other types of fusion energy[32:00] Criticism of fusion energy[34:00] Background of Melanie Windridge[37:00] Polar exploration and climbing Everest[39:00] Being a woman in science See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
