Jason Demers joins the San Jose Hockey Now Podcast! Before we get to Demers (30:34), Keegan and Sheng give a too-early preview of the 2024 Draft. What trends and prospects should San Jose Sharks fans be keeping a closer eye on?We start at the top of the Draft with Macklin Celebrini, Cole Eiserman, and Ivan Demidov (3:15)? Why might Eiserman drop? Sheng shares what he's heard about Demidov (8:10). Could Demidov stay longer in the KHL (10:55)?Sheng also shares what he's heard about the Sharks' new Russian-area scout Igor Eronko (11:35).Keegan spies a couple Draft trends at the moment, that there aren't a lot of centers at the top of this Draft (15:10), but there are a lot of defensemen (16:20).He talks about top winger prospects Konsta Helenius, Tanner Howe, and Maxim Masse. Then he shares insight about top defensemen prospects Artyom Levshunov, Aron Kiviharju, Cole Hutson, Adam Jiricek, Zayne Parekh, Sam Dickinson, Carter Yakemchuk, Henry Mews, and Zeev Buium.Which defenseman might vault into the top-three (23:38)?Also, where would Will Smith go in this Draft (27:40)?Now, Jason Demers (30:34)!Demers says that he's “right on the edge of retirement” (31:18).He says that he might do TV work with NHL Network and NBC Sharks.Demers, picked in the seventh round of the 2008 Draft, tells us which San Jose Sharks scout advocated for him (34:48) and a funny Draft day story of mistaken identity. He says the New York Rangers and Nashville Predators were looking hard at him too.He recalls that Tim Burke “liked to rag” on the QMJHL, where Demers came from (40:30). He thinks Burke is misunderstood.Demers went from getting drafted in 2008 to a full-time role with the Sharks in 2010, and he shares the names of all the guys who made his transition to the NHL so smooth (41:36).He thinks he probably “annoyed the crap” out of the Sharks veterans at the time, and was told to “zip it” a lot, because he was always upbeat and talking, even as a rookie. He elaborates on the incorrect perception that he took things too lightly as a young player, and shares that being a chatterbox was a coping mechanism for his anxiety (47:50).“It was a great room to be in, but…it wasn't an easy one,” he said of the San Jose Sharks locker room then. “To lose two games in a row, it was like armageddon in the locker room.”Demers talks about the duality of Joe Thornton in the room, but ultimately, how much he loved Jumbo (52:39). He talks about how things were different back then, players would go out and drink a little the night before a game.Demers shares why he thinks the Sharks couldn't get over the hump in the 2010 and 2011 Western Conference Finals (58:45). He reveals some of the injuries and challenges that those teams faced. Then, in 2012, the Sharks couldn't get out of the first round, Demers thinks that perhaps the front office “overhauled too much” of the roster (1:03:06).This leads to Demers's last full season with the Sharks in 2013-14 and the Reverse Sweep (1:05:09). He recalls Raffi Torres's early impact on that first-round series with the Los Angeles Kings, but then Torres got hurt. He recounts the course of the series, from Game One to Seven. Demers remembered, when the Sharks went up 3-0: “A lot of the guys in LA that knew the guys in San Jose were texting with them, being like just finish us, we want to go home.” He also shares that Kings head coach Darryl Sutter called Sharks defenseman Brad Stuart after San Jose went up 3-0. Were there some mind games going on (1:12:06)?Was there a moment when Demers really felt the series was slipping away (1:13:54)?That off-season, Thornton was stripped of his captaincy. Demers and the Sharks room all thought that Jumbo was scapegoated (1:15:10).Demers says he might be to blame for his “Daddy” nickname (1:17:06).Demers shares the behind the scenes of the infamous and hilarious 2014 Sharks' “Holiday Sweater” Christmas music video (1:18:45). He says John Scott got too much airtime, that it was something of a cursed video, and why Joe Thornton and other Sharks stars didn't appear in it.Demers remembers his “Holiday Sweater” rap verse (1:20:44)!What was the secret door knock for Marc-Edouard Vlasic's hotel room door (1:25:15)? Demers thinks it changed every road trip. Finally, Demers, who spent most of last season in the AHL, talks about how special a moment it was to play his 700th NHL game last year at SAP Center (1:28:43). He joked that his entire minor league salary went toward flying friends and family in.He also talked about playing against the San Jose Barracuda last year and why Ozzy Wiesblatt annoyed him (1:33:38).“I tried to kill him every game, I got him a couple times,” Demers laughed.Demers closes with more thoughts about his 700th game, and its significance to him (1:37:50).Listen to the San Jose Hockey Now Podcast — it's a new link — on Apple Podcasts and Spotify and Google Podcasts.Subscribe to the San Jose Hockey Now Podcast YouTube channel, we're trying to get over 1K subscribers! ★ Support this podcast ★

In his day job, Bayne Pettinger represents high-profile NHL players like Jamie Benn, and Tyson Barrie. However, as an outspoken member of the LGBTQIA2S+ community, he also represents welcome progress in a sport that needs it. Pettinger spoke on ‘outliers' overshadowing NHL Pride Nights, his own journey from publicly coming out 2 years ago, and the important work of the Alphabet Sports Collective; a non-profit he co-founded. Plus, client Tyson Barrie's trade to Nashville, the human-side of being an agent, and a jersey mishap at the World Juniors. In Headlines, the guys delve into the playoff picture: if any shake-ups could happen in the last games of the season, has the Penguins ‘window' closed, and David Pastrnak's scoring prowess. Matt Boldy's sizzling hot-streak, Joonas Korpisalo backstopping the LA Kings, and Ray's coverage of the Golden Knights vs. Oilers round-out the Western Conference discussion. Betano's Kris Abbott joins the guys and Ray puts Vegas casinos on notice with a big blackjack win. Kris commends the NHL schedule-makers for a PACKED Saturday slate that had him in the green. Would you bet against the Avs winning the west?? A heavily favoured Avs return to the cup final could be an opportunity for a savvy bettor. In Ask Ray & Dregs Anything, the guys answer YOUR questions! This week: the erasure of Raffi Torres' favourite hit, hockey ‘switch hitters', and Ray's ice-shower advice. Plus, Ask R+D regular Bryan Mudryk chimes in with a golf question. Mike and Dan are joined by Nick Costa of the legendary Offside Tavern to talk about Raffi Torres, an infamous NHL player that most people forgot even was an Islander. Nick tells the tale of a memorable run-in he had with a young Torres that all but guaranteed he'd never forget the winger' drafting and uneventful first two seasons on The Island. They talk about his goal-free 31 games in blue-and-orange and their near universal excitement that he had been traded for defenseman Janne Niinimaa, even as Torres went on to produce for Edmonton. They marvel at two other forgotten Torres stints with other teams before diving into his tumultuous time as one of the NHL's most hated players. Along the way, Nick drops more stories about running into Islanders in various dining establishments around Long Island, including one generous prospect who spent some of his meager salary to buy a young Nick a bagel. Winners & Losers this week we talk about our favorite animals.
Wait til you hear about our NFL ring ceremony concept...Jonah is back in from his Fresh year of college and contributes in a big way. Maria can best be described as mildly bemused and tolerant as the guys propose the following:1) What would you do if you had the Stanley Cup for a day?2) A total reimagining of the NFL Super Bowl ring ceremony. What if NFL Super Bowl rings were turned over every year like the Stanley Cup? 50 yard line, previous winners line up across from new winners and (Benny Hill theme starts playing) each player has to find another one to wear his ring.Would there be Red Carpet event fan overlap for the Super Bowl if there was a week long leadup with players discussing the rings, their potential outfits for the ceremony and who their potential targets might be?If this sounds to you like it might be a terrible idea, maybe you need to ask yourself this question: “If Elvis Grbac, 1994 Michigan Wolverines starting QB, thinks its a great idea...is it possible that maybe I’m the one missing the point?”*If you are an NFL athlete or know an NFL athlete, please explain to us why or how you think this will be successful and who to contact to make it work.*To date, Elvis Grbac is definitely unaware of this idea and may or may not think it’s a good idea. Please visit us at https://thetragedyacademy.com On social media, you can find us at @thetragedyacademypodcast on Instagram, The Tragedy Academy Podcast on Facebook, and @tragedy_academy on Twitter. In this 64th Puckin Hostile Shoutcast (the Nail Yakupov episode) Gatekeeper, and Pat are short one loud, mouth breathing Hoosier, and one Canadian, after an embarrassed AtomicFroster licks his wounds following Canada's less than stellar showing in the Olympics. The gents discuss the following: -Gate's diet. -Peeing on the playground. -Endless Colin Kaepernick references. -A contest winner is announced. -Las Vegas team name ideas are stupid. -Patrick Roy just quits, and the clowns applaud. -Radim Vrbata, James Wisniewski, Antoine Vermette, Sean Monahan, Cody Cici, Brandon Pirri, and shitbag Raffi Torres all nail down their near futures. -Hawks lose out on Jimmy Vesey and Jiri Hudler, as well. -Listener questions. -More ragging on The Hockey Press. -And of course, as always, an abundance of inappropriate references and jokes in incredibly bad taste.

So much has happened- the Sharks are back playing with a healthy Raffi Torres and Logan Couture, the Dudes went to Vegas, and we had one of the splashier trade deadlines in year.

Driven by leadership, the love of the game, the team and the city, the NHL's current longest serving captain will be back in a Sens uniform at season's start, plus this happens without a contract extension or more money being thrown at him. That's the definition of leadership right there. We also touch on the future of leadership beyond Alfie and the drastic change from previous years with now having a clog up on offence while shockingly looking thin on the blue line and try to fill these spots with the prospects that are coming up. Around the league there has been some noise with Nash finally moving to the Rangers, Nashville getting their hands tied with an offer sheet and we talk about other big names on the move. All of this is of course dependent on the CBA being finalized in time for hockey to start. Pan gets heated over recent Tim Thomas comments and Kardinal goes a little Whiskey Tango Foxtrot on the topic of the Raffi Torres suspension and appeal. We read our first e-mail from a long time groundhog and launch our very first SCU contest. We're looking forward to the start of training camp and pre-season and hope to hear from you soon via e-mail, the forums or twitter. ALFIE ALFIE ALFIE ALFIE!
Ahead this week on the program, well into the second round of the Stanley Cup playoffs and it's as wide open as ever. We'll go through some Mid Playoff Musings out of the gate in the Redline Report, who's the odds on Cup favourite, and who would you give the Conn Smythe to if the playoffs ended today? A couple of Nashville Predators are misbehaving, we'll tell you how they were punished and what it means for the Preds. Raffi Torres and the NHLPA have appealed his 25 game suspension for his hit on Marian Hossa. We'll tell you how this could set a precedent for the NHL depending on how the appeal is ruled upon to wrap the Redline Report. Back Checking brings an announcement about the Toronto Maple Leafs, Listener Contributions and a Troubling Fact of the Week. Rigamarole this week looks at why the NHL should never even consider altering the current playoff overtime format.
Ahead this week on the program, the NHL came down hard on Raffi Torres for his hit on Marian Hossa of the Chicago Blackhawks. We'll tell you why 25 games was too much of a suspension for that hit. As well, this is shaping up to be one of the busiest off seasons of big name player movement in recent memory. We'll tell you who could be on the move and if the Leafs should get in on the action. Back Checking comes your way next with Listener Contributions from Twitter and Email. Wrapping the segment is the Gong Banger as we ring in another Troubling Fact of the Week. Rigamarole this week wraps the show with a look at who holds the edge in the second round of the Western Conference playoffs. Is there anything more awkward than running into somebody at a grocery store for the second time in the same visit? This is Episode 7.30 of AFITC.
We gathered on a Sunday afternoon to watch playoff hockey and the NBA from the Apologist's apartment, while drinking an extraordinary amount of bloody mary's. Joining us was past guest and Aps' roommate, “The Pink Elephant”, as we chatted about adoption, Raffi Torres, violence in the NHL, the Buffalo Bills and the NFL draft, and of course, high school yearbook quotes.
Join TJCAPS and Bettman's Nightmare of SB Nation's Arctic Ice Hockey in an episode where we talk a bit about the highs and lows of the Winnipeg Jets 2011-12 regular season, what to expect going forward and Dustin Byfuglien. We also delve into the NHL playoffs, Raffi Torres and our stud and dud first round series.
Ahead this week on the program, absolute chaos bordering on anarchy so far in the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Nine suspensions already and likely more to come. Has the violence turned you off or are you loving it? We'll give our thoughts on that, the Raffi Torres hit on Marian Hossa, the Penguins / Flyers and Kings and Canucks coming up in the Redline Report. Back Checking comes your way next with Listener Contributions from Twitter and emails from Alan and Aaron. After that, it's a Troubling Fact of the Week, this week featuring what we think was the most sickening act of the playoffs so far. Rigamarole wraps the program with a look at Canada's National netminding crisis. Tweety Bird from the Looney Toons, is it a guy or a girl? Seriously, still haven't been able to figure that one out. This is Episode 7.29 of AFITC.
