Jackie Gleason was an American comedian, actor, and musician, who was Born in Brooklyn New York in 1916 under difficult circumstances. His only sibling died at age 14, his father abandoned the family, and Gleason dropped out of school to earn money. Then his mother died leaving him broke and homeless. Gleason spent the next decade trying to break into show business as a night club comedian. He eventually began appearing on Broadway and network radio shows. In 1949, Gleason became the star of the Life of Riley, and early TV sitcom. It only lasted a year before Gleason got his big break. In 1950 he was named host of the Cavalcade of Stars on the DuMont TV Network. The show became hit, with Gleason then lured to CBS where he created the character of Ralph Kramden on the classic sitcom "The Honeymooners." Gleason would remain a major TV and movie star for the rest of his life. He also had a music career with several record setting albums. Gleason never forgot the hard times of his youth, and was praised for helping struggling African-American entertainers make it into the business, including legendary comedian Timmie Rogers. The two became life long friends. You will hear Jackie Gleason's early radio appearances on the Double Feature radio show in 1944, and Hollywood Open House in 1948, but also showcasing his music career on Here's to Veterans in 1955. How sweet it is! While we hope you say that after every episode, this week it's mandatory as we feature Jackie Gleason who ruled over variety television in the 1950s and 60s, as well as inventing iconic characters and sketches that influence pop culture to this day. Originally an MC and nightclub comic, Gleason caught the eyes of network execs who tapped him to host a variety show called The Cavalcade of Stars. The show was later moved from New York to Miami Beach and renamed the Jackie Gleason show, recognizing the star power of the host. It was on that show that Jackie invented his most enduring character, loudmouth bus driver Ralph Kramden who anchored the "Honeymooners" sketches. Not just a comedian, Gleason was a master actor, able to play both comedy and dramatic roles and he earned an Oscar nomination for his role as pool legend Minnesota Fats in The Hustler. He also could do broad comedy as his long run as Sheriff Buford T Justice in the Smokey and the Bandit movies proved. And what about those Saturday nights alone with your lover -- well Jackie had you covered there as well with a string of highly successful "romantic music" albums. It all adds up to a unique and legendary career. As always find extra clips below and thanks for sharing our shows. Want more Gleason? In pop culture Jackie Gleason and Ralph Kramden are joined at the hip. Through sketches on the Jackie Gleason show and a standalone sitcom, The Honeymooners were must see television and inspired another iconic show -- the animated Flintstones. Here is the full bit where Ralph decides he just won't mambo. https://youtu.be/_-FhWB1POWQ?si=sinTj3YRAqY3hbw8 While Ralph Kramden is Jackie's best known character, he had many other gems including sophisticated playboy Reginald Van Gleason who was responsible for delivering his "How Sweet It Is" catchphrase. https://youtu.be/f-aR6IoiN-Q?si=7rfepLuKmvT5fxmI When the part called for broad comedy Jackie could deliver, as in his long run as the blustering Sheriff Buford T. Justice in the Smokey and the Bandit franchise. https://youtu.be/TjLUPXLPvKo?si=naEK5z7M86ODk8nR

John Herbert Gleason (February 26, 1916 – June 24, 1987) was an American actor, comedian, writer, and composer known affectionately as "The Great One".[1][2][3] He developed a style and characters from growing up in Brooklyn, New York and was known for his brash visual and verbal comedy, exemplified by his city bus driver character Ralph Kramden in the television series The Honeymooners. He also developed The Jackie Gleason Show, which maintained high ratings from the mid-1950s through 1970. The series originated in New York City, but filming moved to Miami Beach, Florida in 1964 after Gleason took up permanent residence there. Among his notable film roles were Minnesota Fats in 1961's The Hustler (co-starring with Paul Newman) and Buford T. Justice in the Smokey and the Bandit series from 1977 to 1983 (co-starring Burt Reynolds). Gleason enjoyed a prominent secondary music career during the 1950s and 1960s, producing a series of best-selling "mood music" albums. His first album Music for Lovers Only still holds the record for the longest stay on the Billboard Top Ten Charts (153 weeks), and his first 10 albums sold over a million copies each.[4] His output spans more than 20 singles, nearly 60 long-playing record albums, and over 40 CDs. “Mama Loves Mambo” (May 3, 1956) While Ralph Kramden never met an out gay character on screen, he did once tussle with a new neighbor, Carlos Sanchez (Charles Korvin), who embodies all the traits of the “latin lover” stock character type. This includes being perceived as a threat to women while also being sensitive, empathetic and emotional — or in the midcentury binary, effeminate. We're joined by Nu Julio himself, Tony Rodriguez, to discuss why this classic sitcom strikes a different chord than I Love Lucy, what to make of Ralph Kramden's domestic violence threats and why you maybe didn't see The Honeymooners in syndication back in the day. One of the greatest impressionists of all time, George Kirby was a frequent flyer on tv variety and talk shows, and on the nightclub stage from the 1950s all the way until the 1990s. One of the first black comics to fully cross over to white audiences, Kirby's gift was his uncanny ability to mimic pop culture figures singing as well as speaking. George was a favorite of Ed Sullivan, who featured him on his "Toast of the Town" show as well as his national variety program. After a run on The Kopykats -- an ABC show devoted to impressionists -- George earned his own short-run series but his career was interrupted by drug charges that sent him to prison for over three years. While his career never fully recovered, he remained active in Vegas and was a guest on Bob Hope's USO shows. As always, find extended clips below and thanks for sharing our shows! Want more George Kirby? While George's impressions were his main calling card he was also a fine standup with an expressive style and great timing. This cute bit, about his wife's poker game, is drawn from his 1970s standup work. https://youtu.be/PACXnn0842o George had a wonderfully versatile voice and it served him well on ABC's The Kopykats which ran in the 1970s and then his own George Kirby Half a Comedy Hour which had a 22 episode run. In his bit, from George's show, he imitates two classic caucasian blowhards -- Ralph Kramden and Archie Bunker (with an assist from another Legend, Marilyn Michaels). https://youtu.be/XJmBrefkI3Q Back in the day, Bob Hope would make an annual USO tour to entertain US troops in a war zone or hostile environment. Along with singers and scantily-clad cheerleaders, Bob would always bring a comedian along and in 1983 George was picked to join the USO tour of Beirut. Here's George being introduced by Bob, then treating the troops to some standup and a fine impression of Humprey Bogart singing jazz. https://youtu.be/IVmzsqOuA74?t=416

Oooh we got a good one today. I just heard it myself and I want to hear it again. FIrst off in GIldy Land today the Mayor's race is heating up and GIldy's backing rotten neighbor Bullard. Gildy passes out the ceegars to campaign for Bullard and things go awry from there. Listen to Sounds Like Radio Volume 109 and the November 1, 1950 Great Gildersleeve. We'll even hear an original vintage ad advertising that very Levis Gremlin I drove! In addition to hearing the original '73 Gremlin ad you can see in our picture that accompanies this show the original 1973 ad. Yes, I was quite the groovy cat. But the really good news is what we have for you both before and after the Gildersleeve show. I've gone deep into the Sounds Like Radio archives and have emerged with some winners. We'll be listening to 2 very special STEREO recordings by the REAL Ink Spots and the real Vaughn Monroe!!! We then turn to a song written by Ralph Kramden & Ed Norton from Jackie Gleason's Honeymooners and the actual record made of that song by Bob Manning. Jo Stafford thinks Gildy has trouble in mind, Bing Crosby and Peggy Lee are here to sing a duet that is rarely found or heard, Billie Holiday sings a really neat song that is not one you ever hear Billie sing, but you will today.

It was on this date 66 years ago that one of the most popular, most durable, and most iconic situation comedies in television history was born. Taking place mostly in a tiny two room apartment in Brooklyn, The Honeymooners set new standards for television comedy. Captained by the comic genius of Jackie Gleason, the show also featured the versatile Art Carney, Joyce Randolph, and, of course, as Ralph Kramden long-suffering wife Alice, Audrey Meadows. A classically beautiful actress who purposely downplayed her looks for the role, Meadows also proved to be a formidable counterpoint to the Ralph Kramden character.
With All Due Respect is gives you a booster shot of politics. Mayor Bronson goes Ralph Kramden on the Anchorage Assembly. Governor Mike Dunleavy goes Handmaid's Tale on Alaska's women. U.S. Senator Lisa Murkowski goes unprecedented for Alaska and U.S. Senator Dan Sullivan goes out of his way to do nothing.
Episode 67: ‘Want a gum tape measure? Well, here's a licorice hammer!'Jim and George explore what are the very best sitcom episodes of all time, and best gum. This episode features the shortest intermission the guys have ever done so that they can devote time to speaking of the heresy chocolate gum, the Ralph Kramden and Fred Flintstone connection, and debate the various fruit flavors in Juicy Fruit gum.And what is the connect Portland Mavericks baseball team's surprising connection to bubble gum. Finally, how did the kid in those Bazooka Joe comics lose an eye?
While craving some Carol Channing, we stumbled on the 1968 drug trip "Skidoo" and threw caution to the wind. How terrible is it really? Jackie Gleason tripping on acid in a prison cell terrible? Absolutely!
Lunch with Ralph Kramden, the Mind Noodler's Zoom show, & thoughts about Michael Cohen's podcast that have virtually no relation to the sample clips included.
By special request, one of the weirdest episodes in Saturday Night Live history. Hosted by Cheers star George Wendt but guest directed by Francis Ford Coppola and musical guest Phillip Glass. It's an odd one but an interesting one. Sketches include a monologue interrupted by Coppola, a Vietnam sketch interrupted by Coppola, That Black Girl interrupted by Coppola, George Wendt selling whale meat, Robert Downey Jr in a suitcase, and Ralph Kramden punching his wife in the face. #LOYALORDEROFMOOSE #FREEMASONS #ELKS Ep 60 The Decline of the American Fraternal Organizations To Become a Member of the Loyal Order of Moose email me at info@insanethrottlebikernews.com The International Order of Loyal Raccoons was once an important part of everyday life for TV characters Ralph Kramden and Ed Norton of "The Honeymooners." But like those characters from the 1950s television classic, fraternal organizations are in danger of becoming a grainy memory from years past. As older members die off and younger generations find civic groups irrelevant, membership in centuries-old civic clubs like the Moose, the Elks, the Optimists and others is dwindling. Organizations like the Odd Fellows, for instance, boasted about 1 million members in their 1940s heyday -- today, the Odd Fellows' ranks have thinned to half that number, according to a club spokesperson. Is there a future for civic groups in America? --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/hollywoodandchinadollshow/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/hollywoodandchinadollshow/support

LOS ANGELES -- Joyce Randolph was born in Detroit, Michigan before moving to New York City and embarking upon an epic acting career that included playing the role of Trixie Norton on the iconic and venerable TV show, “The Honeymooners.” Joyce and her cast members including Art Carney, who played her husband sewer worker Ed Norton, Audrey Meadows who portrayed Alice Kramden, and Jackie Gleason, who played Ralph Kramden a bus driver, have delighted, entertained and produced enduring laughter for audiences since the mid-'50s who have embraced and loved the Kramden’s and the Norton’s — friends and neighbors from Bensonhurst Brooklyn.
