Let's get slimy with five fascinating fast facts about eels, an intriguing story about long-finned eels from Kelly Osterberg, an educator who knows a LOT about eels, and a gooey eel activity for you to cook up at home.   Presented by Jenny Lynch and Matilda Sercombe. Written and produced by Jenny Lynch. Music by Purple Planet Music. Sound effects by Pixabay.   https://www.creativescience.com.au   Episode content: 00:00 Introduction and fast facts 02:21 The lives of long-finned eels 09:05 Glass eel noodle activity   WaterNSW Warragamba Dam website https://www.waternsw.com.au/nsw-dams/greater-sydney-dams/warragamba-dam WaterNSW Education website (for Teachers) https://www.waternsw.com.au/education   Glass Eel Noodle Activity instructions You will need: A heat-proof cup, such as a teacup or a small mug, 2 tablespoons of potato starch, 1 tablespoon of boiling water, a metal teaspoon, a small saucepan, a stove, and a strainer. WARNING! An adult must do the steps that use boiling water. WARNING! Glass eel noodles have a very chewy texture. They should not be eaten by very young children or anyone who has trouble with chewing food. Add the 2 tablespoons of potato starch to a heat proof cup, such as a teacup or a small mug. Add 1 tablespoon of boiling water to the potato starch and mix thoroughly using a metal teaspoon. Use your hands to knead the mixture until it forms a smooth dough. Break the dough in half and then divide each half into about 6 equally sized pieces. Roll each of the 12 pieces of dough into a thin eel shape, about 5 to 7 cm long. Boil water in a small saucepan and add the eels to the boiling water, one at a time, so they don't stick to each other. Boil the eels for about 15 minutes until they are almost completely transparent. Use a strainer or colander to carefully strain the eels and then rinse the eels in cold water.

Most animals avoid fighting, but some of them actually enjoy it. Male bighorn sheep arrange real duels, where only the largest, the strongest, and the heaviest can win. They smash their heads together at a speed of about 15 mph. The human body probably wouldn't survive a blow like this! Another furious fighter is the Bison. Imagine two of these gigantic creatures hitting each other at a speed of 35 mph! Cute fuzzy hares are actually tough fighters, and tiny ocean creatures can knock out opponents in a single punch. Animals often look pretty harmless, but some of them could beat the stuffing out of the most experienced boxers! So what animal has the strongest punch? And how dangerous is a kick of the most famous boxers of the animal world - the kangaroo? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Text: Job 39   13 “The wings of the ostrich wave proudly, but are they the pinions and plumage of love? 14 For she leaves her eggs to the earth and lets them be warmed on the ground, 15 forgetting that a foot may crush them and that the wild beast may trample them. 16 She deals cruelly with her young, as if they were not hers; though her labor be in vain, yet she has no fear, 17 because God has made her forget wisdom and given her no share in understanding. 18 When she rouses herself to flee, she laughs at the horse and his rider.   -Job 39:13-18 ESV   AMAZING ANIMALS SHOWING GOD   In chapter 38, God used numerous features of inanimate creations to question and refute Job's slight to His wisdom and power. These include questions about his knowledge of the creation of the earth, oceans, dawn, sun, the expanse of the earth, light and darkness, snow, hail, frost, thunderbolts, etc. Here in chapter 39, He posed rhetorical questions to Job about the dynamics of the animal kingdom.   These questions include; Do you feed lions and their cubs or ravens and their young? [ 38:39-41], Do you know when mountain goats and deer are born?[39:1-4], Did you lose the wild donkey and care for each one?[39:5-8], Do you control the wild donkey or does he obey you? [39:9-12], Did you give the ostrich low intelligence? [39:13-18], Did you give the war horse abilities for war?[39:19-25] and Did you give the hawk and the eagle incredible eyesight?[39:6-30]   Job was tongue-tied. He accused God of being silent. Now, he is the one in silence. It is impossible for Job or anyone, to know and explain all these, is it not? Animal scientists may be able to discover that a cattle that eat grass could produce milk. But, we ask, ‘Could man invent a machine that could transform grass into milk? What makes these animals tick with their unique features, skills, behavior, and survival instincts are controlled by God.   Furthermore, their distinct descriptions do demonstrate God's goodness to each animal, seeing to it that these animals survive, don't they? For example, it appears as if the ostrich neglects her eggs and has no concern for her young because when she is frightened she runs away and leaves them. Hawks and eagles make their nests in higher places than other birds. Are they disadvantaged in looking for food? Yet they have remarkable eyesight, which enables them to see the tiniest objects from a great distance.   God cares for them. How much more to us His very own children? Did not Jesus say, “Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?[Matt 6:26] ------------------------- Visit and FOLLOW Gospel Light Filipino on YouTube, Facebook and Instagram

Magawa, Cambodia's landmine-sniffing 'hero' rat, dies in retirement, age 8 He found more than 100 landmines and explosives in Cambodia before he retired last June. But now Magawa, the African giant pouched rat, has died at age 8. Magawa was the most successful “HeroRAT” used by international charity APOPO. He died over the Jan. 8-9 weekend. APOPO uses trained rats to detect landmines and tuberculosis. “Magawa was in good health and spent most of last week playing with his usual enthusiasm, but towards the weekend he started to slow down, napping more and showing less interest in food in his last days,” the nonprofit organization said in a statement. APOPO said Magawa's help allowed communities in Cambodia to live, work and play more safely. “Every discovery he made reduced the risk of injury or death for the people of Cambodia,” APOPO said. APOPO began training rats in Belgium in the 1990s. (Reuters) Dogs' brains can tell Spanish from Hungarian Dogs can distinguish between languages, researchers in Hungary found, after playing excerpts from the story The Little Prince in Spanish and Hungarian to a group of 18 canines and examining how their brains reacted. “(In the research) we found for the first time that a nonhuman brain can distinguish (between) languages,” said Laura V. Cuaya of Eotvos Lorand University in Budapest, who led the study. All the dogs in the experiment had heard only one of the two languages — either Hungarian or Spanish — from their owners before, allowing researchers to compare how their brain reacted to a highly familiar language and to a completely unfamiliar one. We're still on lockdown with all of this pandemic nonsense, so let's keep talking about animals - AMAZING ANIMALS! OG buds Liz Cooper, Nikki Rochon Kaiser, and your reggo host Melody Starkweather get together on the interwaves and share findings from their isolation research. We talk about octopuses, crows, dolphins, gorillas and parrots and how unbelievably clever they are! Hear stories of 'scientific' studies and wild animal hijinks, and learn about some celebrity creatures: Koko the Gorilla, Peter the Dolphin and Alex the Parrot. This is predominantly a feel-good episode, although we have some ethical questions about animal research. You will too, after hearing about their complex emotional lives. You know what, though? This podcast is not about friggin' COVID-19, so YOU'RE WELCOME. If you like the show, please tell your friends!
