Send us a Text Message.Nick Cave. After a career that would exhaust a lesser man, he's still recording and performing breathtaking work. Mick's just seen him live with only his piano, and a bass guitar, and can't stop raving! We look at how he started and the difference between his performances and attitudes then and now. In other news, Lenny Kravitz is still sticking to his vow of celibacy, The Police's Andy Summers declares that they were total babes, and The Angels are still releasing new work. Hmmm....... Jonnine Standish & Genevieve McGuckin discuss their overlapping lives with Rowland S. Howard for this very first episode of 4AD Forages.
When Genevieve McGuckin moved here from Brisbane as a young woman, she quickly immersed herself in St Kilda's musical and creative culture. Meeting lifelong friends to collaborate with, she started the post-punk band These Immortal Souls, along with her musical and life partner, Rowland S Howard and has also contributed to many other bands and artists' work. Now a long-term resident, Genevieve hasn't stopped doing what we all love doing here - looking up at St Kilda's buildings and wondering about their stories. It was lovely to have Gen in the studio to share her St Kilda moments with us! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
The late Rowland S Howard left a rich musical legacy when he departed this mortal coil over a decade ago. Most notably, Howard was the creative force behind The Birthday Party, the legendary “Post-Punk” band that also gave us Nick Cave. Ralph and I give a retrospective on Howard's legacy, complete with all of the anecdotes and tangents that you can expect from a typical EWB episode. Intro: “All Roads Lead to Ruin” – composed and recorded by Mike Hill Outro: “Shut Me Down” – Rowland S. Howard
Our 35th Mixtape installment arrives from Dahjyn, a musician, producer and vocalist originally from the Pacific Northwest of the U.S and currently based in Brooklyn. Dahjyn, or Dan Jyn Suk Ahrendt is currently a resident with a monthly show at Hong Kong Community Radio and has just recently published his debut EP, The gall (Most Dismal Swamp, 2021) featuring additional remixes by Endgame, Thegn, and trngs. A new member of the swamp family, his sounds is completely akin to the label's unique sonic aesthetics. With relentless industrial gut-punch percussion, textural power electronics, and reflective baritone verse, the album includes 5 tracks that embody a convulsive tension between an abrasive physicality and a brooding emotionality: a visceral incantation working through aggregate layers of trauma. Alongside his particular self-exploration in identity and ability to express it, he's continually inspired by amazing electronic musicians and producers around the world pushing his boundaries and expectations. Also a In this mix, Dahjyn tells us, he covers a very solid gamut of his driving nostalgia combined with the newer driving interests in his ears. The personal arc has moved from a past more anchored in post-punk romanticism, moving into the atmospheric self-obliteration of the heavier experimental pulling from the traditional music he's found himself lost in. Tracklist: Akai Tori - Takeda No Komoriuta Book of Knots - Drosophila Melanogaster (ft. Blixa Bargeld) Nilotika Cultural Ensemble - Ejokawulida The Anchiskati Choir - Alilio ver.2 Rowland S. Welcome to the first in an occasional series of Vapour Trails Lockdown Specials. In this episode we spoke with influential Australian musician, Harry Howard (Crime and the City Solution, These Immortal Souls, Pink Stainless Tail, Harry Howard and the NDE & ATOM) via a clunky old zoom link to Melbourne. In a wide ranging conversation, we cover everything from the early days of the Birthday Party, Berlin in the mid 80's, the recent concerts celebrating the work of Harry's late brother, Rowland S. Howard, and his current project, ATOM, with a few tunes dotted along the way - and lots more besides. Also, as a bonus, following on straight after the conversation, we've added an hour of back-to-back tunes, all related in some way to the bands/musicians Harry has worked with - full track listing below. So, if you like your emotions (and guitars) raw n close to the bone, keep on listening after the chat..... Leading up to World Goth Day, DJ Abbie is giving you a dose of variations of goth every day this week. She’s kicking things off with an essential cut from The Birthday Party’s own Rowland S. Howard. While often associated with post-punk, there’s an unmistakable goth-ness to the landmark Australian musician’s work. “Autoluminescent,” a standout track from Howard’s debut Teenage Snuff Film, contorts and twists in a bluesy haze. It’s a highlight of the tender, personal side of goth. Howard’s voice shakes as he sings “Into the dark darkness, I gave away myself.” Read the full post on KEXP.org Support the show.

Today’s episode was recorded at the Central Coast Ukulele and Folk Festival. Normally when I go to a festival I organise all my interviews in advance, but when I heard Ohana playing at the festival on the Saturday morning I was impressed, and hit them up for an interview as soon as they finished their set. Fortunately, Adam and Lea were up for it! If you want to record your version of Brand New Day and support the Brand New Day Project, the chords and lyrics are on the Facebook page. I recorded a version with my bandmates Jasmine Fellows and Chris Williams – and yes it does have a bit of melodica in it! You can watch the video on the Brand New Day Project page, or the Ukulele Is The New Black YouTube channel. Howdy friends, how are you? Can't believe we're about to pass the first quarter of the year already. I don't want to ramble too much because we've got some great tunes to get into, but what I do want to bring your attention to is the monster ride that our good mate Brad is doing. For the 2nd year he is participating in the Hawaiian Ride For Youth to raise awareness for mental health. It's a great cause and well worth checking out. The ride will be finished this Saturday, but there is still time to donate to Brad's efforts. If you have some spare coin, any amount helps, head to the link below to donate. Donate Now! As always, leave a comment below or if you're feeling really nice, head on over to iTunes and leave us a rating and review. Let us know what you like, or don't like, about the show. We're always looking at ways to improve. And now, into the show... “I just want to make heavy brutal shit that makes people feel anything at all.” My friends Heather and Seth play in a band called HIDE that - in addition to offering a disorienting and bludgeoning live experience - creates pulsing, lurching soundscapes that I think are some of the best sounds to come out of Chicago of late. Their 2018 debut full length is called “Castration Anxiety,” and I think it’s fantastic - so I got them on the podcast to talk about it - as well as the relationships in behavior between repeatedly watching funny YouTube clips and enjoying minimalist music and the usage and subversion of religious iconography in HIDE’s visual art. Check out more from Heather, Seth & HIDE here: Instagram: @hide_music//@heathergabel Bandcamp: https://hide3.bandcamp.com/ If you're enjoying the show, the best way to support it is by sharing with your friends. If you don't have any friends, why not a leave a review? It makes a difference in terms of other people finding the show. You can also subscribe to receive my e-mail newsletter at www.toddnief.com. Most of my writing never makes it to the blog, so get on that list. Show Notes [01:23] Seth wasn’t into pop punk growing up. Heather was on tour with pop punk bands, but only liked “real punk.” And sitting with albums and listening to them deeply in the pre-internet era. [10:45] The association between live performance and recorded music – and filtering the amount of content you consume through the lens of live performance. And how the spirit of HIDE relates to Heather’s punk background and Seth’s metal background even if the surface aesthetics may be different. [27:53] Overanalyzing repetitive watching and listening behavior in viral videos as well as music. And what is the role of repetition in HIDE’s music? And how do Heather and Seth balance competing desires for minimalism and variation? [50:42] Use of symbols and iconography in association with HIDE’s imagery, and Heather’s bizarre and uncomfortable experiences with the way that people react to their body in art, in performance and in daily life [1:08:21] Humans are humans no matter where they go, and engage in shitty behavior even in subcultures that ostensibly value more progressive views – and the reaction of creating online “call out culture” is probably not the best response [1:23:00] Check out “Castration Anxiety” and do whatever you want – as long as it is exactly what Seth wants you to do Links and Resources Mentioned Alkaline Trio Green Day NOFX Screeching Weasel New Found Glory Blink-182 The Cure Crass Ramones 120 Minutes Napster Daughters Lingua Ignota Pantera Rowland S. Songs from The Raincoats, Buffalo Daughter, Dizzee Rascal, The Renderers, Rowland S. Howard, and Kid Thomas, plus some lively discussion from Bob Nastanovich and Mike Hogan.
This week The Album Club is repping our little corner of the world because we haven't "gone local" since we discussed The Avalanches in Season 1. However, we chose not go for the obvious old school big fish such as ACDC, Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds, or The Saints (there'll be time for all of those, friends!) or even the more contemporary bright lights such as Tame Impala, Jagwar Ma or Courtney Barnett (these too. Boy, are we gonna be busy!). Instead, we thought we'd fly the flag for one of Australia's rock legends: Rowland S Howard. Founding member of the Birthday Party and noise guitarist extraordinaire,it's hard to imagine someone not only keeping up with but, in many ways, outshining the aforementioned Mr. Cave. There's a special place in our hearts for interesting rock stars here at The Album Clubhouse and you just have to Google Rowland, or better yet, fire up the ol' YouTube and watch the man set a figurative fire to his instrument to see where we're coming from. All jangley, steel scratching, shrapnel wielding maelstrom. Sadly, Howard's life was strewn with struggles with addiction and retreated into relative obscurity for a while before his untimely death, but not before surprising many with not one but two fantastic comeback albums earlier this decade; arguably his best work. If you aren't familiar with his god tier caterwauling and and pained howl, you're in for a treat. We give the low down on his origins, his larger than life stage presence, the confoundingly unique approach to guitar playing, and the making of this record, before plunging into the track by track and concluding with a what happened next while the wash of feedback still rings in our ears. Always honest, sometimes troubled, sorrowful but never bitter, Rowland was a total Rock'n'Roll legend. Ben, Andrew and Alex approve.
