By Davy Crockett Sandra "Sandy" Jean (Mackey) Kiddy (1936-2018) of Rancho Mirage, California was the first woman to be inducted into the American Ultrarunning Hall of Fame. She paved the way for women in ultrarunning setting many of the early world and American ultrarunning records. She was born in Grand Rapids Michigan to Robert B. Mackey (1909-1983) and Marjorie Rosita Montez (1911-1993), Her father's ancestry was from Ireland, and her mother's ancestry was from Mexico. Sandy and went to Ottawa Hills High School, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, where she was a member of the Girls' Athletic Association. She had never been very athletic in her youth. She then went to Valparaiso University, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and Zoology. In 1962, she married Frederick "Fred" Kiddy, born in Sheffield, England, who became a bank manager. They married in Las Vegas, Nevada, while driving across the country to California. Once in Los Angeles, Sandy worked first at Caltech and then for Microbics at Beckman Instruments, where she patented a number of reagent laboratory tests. Learn about the rich and long history of ultrarunning. There are now ten books available in the Ultrarunning History series on Amazon Learn More Early Running In 1970, Sandy at age 30, and Fred, age 34, started to jog to lose weight, running about two miles a day. Fred used to run in his young days while in the service in Germany. After moving to Palm Springs in 1974, she started running with a more serious group of runners who ran 15 mile-runs. She recalled, "I don't remember how long it took us, but we were very excited to have done it. We just sat on the sofa looking at each other, because we were too stiff and sore to move. From that point on, we knew that, that was what we wanted to do." Eventually, her group got her interested in road racing. Her first race was in 1976 at the age of 40. She ran a couple short races where she broke course records. She next tackled the marathon because the shorter races seemed like a sprint. In her race registrations, she went by "Sandra" because people kept mistaking her name, "Sandy" as belonging to a man. "Three months after that first long run, I tried a marathon. I broke 3:30, which was quite thrilling. I found I didn't like the shorter races much, too much like a sprint, so we stuck primarily to the marathons, doing five or six a year." Sandy almost always won among the runners age 40 and over, even including the men. In March 1978, she and Fred wrote into their local newspaper about a 10K with 700 runners that ran down Main Street in Palm Springs. "That your paper gave this event no coverage whatsoever is unforgivable and prompts the question as to what you consider newsworthy. May the curse of Pheidippides be on your circulation." Marathon Domination Fred Kiddy, in 1978 Sandy started running multiple marathons a year. Her first of many wins came in 1978 at Lompro Record-Valley of Flowers Marathon with 3:02:36, running with Fred. She and Fred trained together and frequently ran together in the races. In 1978, she won the National Masters Marathon with 2:56:45. Fred finished in 2:47. In 1979, she won the Orange County Marathon in 2:58, a new course record. She said, "The course went along a bike path along the Santa Ana River. There were 20-plus bridges you had to go up and under. I was in pretty good shape, but the bridges took their toll." In June 1979, Sandy got her picture in Sports Illustrated, in Faces in the Crowd. Not only was she winning marathons, but her competitive nature was also in the cards. Her name was in the newspaper many times doing well in Bridge tournaments. First Ultra Sandy Kiddy in 1979, after winning a 10.4 mile race in 1:06:03. Sandy at age 42, burst on the scene of ultras when she ran in the Southern Pacific AAU 50K at Camarillo, California in 1979. She won and set a world record of 3:37:08,
In this episode of the 21st Century Water podcast, Mahesh Lunani talks with Craig Miller, the general manager of the Western Municipal Water District in California. Craig brings over three decades of experience in water management, focusing on operations, engineering, and community service. He discusses the significant decisions in his career and his vision for creating a climate-resilient water system in Southern California.Craig begins by reflecting on his career in the water industry, emphasizing the importance of his decision to enter the field. He recounts how a mentor guided him early in his career, leading him to secure vital water rights on the Santa Ana River. This 16-year journey culminated in securing 500,000 acre-feet of annual water rights for the Orange County Water District, which was a pivotal achievement in his career.Another major decision Craig discusses is the implementation of storage programs to capture and retain water from winter storms. He shares the challenges and successes of working with the federal government to secure water conservation storage behind reservoirs initially built for flood control. These efforts, despite taking years and involving significant regulatory hurdles, have proven crucial for water management in the region.California's recurring droughts and their impact on water supply are central themes of the discussion. Craig highlights the severe water crisis California faces, particularly during prolonged drought periods. To address this, he initiated the "Solve the Water Crisis" campaign, which has grown to include various stakeholders across the state. This initiative aims to advocate for significant investments in water infrastructure to ensure long-term water supply resilience.Craig also talks about Western's diverse and sophisticated water infrastructure. Initially formed to import water, Western has expanded to include wastewater treatment plants, brackish desalters, storage basins, and complex groundwater systems. By developing local water supplies and creating innovative solutions like the wholesale enterprise system, Western has enhanced water reliability and reduced costs for its customers.Budgeting and affordability are critical issues for water agencies. Craig explains how Western is focusing on efficiency to offset the rising costs of water supply. By optimizing energy use, investing in battery storage, and improving operational strategies, Western has achieved significant cost savings. These efforts are crucial in maintaining affordability while ensuring the reliability of water services.Circular economy principles are integral to Western's operations. Craig discusses initiatives to use water multiple times before it is discharged, emphasizing the importance of recycling and reusing water. He also underscores the need for blending traditional and innovative water management strategies to achieve a sustainable water supply. In discussing leadership, Craig advises aspiring water leaders to embrace change, communicate effectively, and get things done. He highlights the importance of surrounding oneself with great leaders and developing a strong team. Craig's approach to leadership and his commitment to long-term water supply planning provide valuable insights for anyone in the water industry.Craig's vision for a climate-resilient water system in Southern California involves a combination of strategic investments, innovative thinking, and collaboration across various sectors. His work demonstrates the importance of proactive planning and leadership in addressing the complex challenges of water management in the 21st century.More information:Western Municipal Water District: https://wmwd.comCalifornia State Water Resources Control Board: https://www.waterboards.ca.govMetropolitan Water District of Southern California: https://www.mwdh2o.comCalifornia State Legislature - SB 366: https://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces/billNavClient.xhtml?bill_id=202120220SB366](https://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces/billNavClient.xhtml?bill_id=202120220SB366 Aquasight Website: https://aquasight.io/

Susan Straight, author of the novel, Mecca, which Michael Connelly called "a masterpiece," talks with Barbara DeMarco-Barrett about her new novel and how it came to be. Susan Straight was born in Riverside, CA, and still lives there with her family. She's passionate about home, California, the Santa Ana River, the foothills and the deserts, and has been writing about southern California and the inland area for forty years. From her kitchen window, she can see the hospital where she was born, which her three daughters find kind of hilarious and pathetic; most days, she walks her dog Angel beside the Santa Ana River as she has since childhood, and then past the classrooms at Riverside City College, where she wrote her first short story, at 16, which is also kind of hilarious, but hopeful. She has written about the people of California for her new memoir, In the Country of Women, based on women's stories told for five generations to Straight and her daughters, in driveways and trucks, at parks and funerals. She's published that memoir, eight novels, and two books for children. Her short stories and essays have been published everywhere from The New Yorker, The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, and The Guardian to Alta, The Believer, McSweeneys, Zoetrope, Reader's Digest, Real Simple, and Family Circle. She's been awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship, the Lannan Prize for Fiction, a California Gold Medal for Fiction, and the Kirsch Award for Lifetime Achievement from the Los Angeles Times Book Prizes. Wetlands are vital to our existence and benefit the ecosystem at large by providing essential habitat for countless species of birds, fish and mammals, slowing water flows, reducing soil erosion, storing water, recharging groundwater, aiding nutrient cycling, and mitigating floods. Host Carry Kim will be interviewing John Villa, Executive Director of the Huntington Beach Wetlands Conservancy [http://hbwetlands.org/index.php], on the Orange County Coast of California. He is working with local, state and federal agencies and property owners to acquire, restore and manage the coastal wetlands in the coastal zone. Forming some of the world's most biodiverse ecosystems, including salt marshes, seagrass beds and mangroves, roughly 40% of the world's species depend upon wetlands for sustenance and shelter, rest stops during long migrations or as breeding grounds. It is estimated that more than 25% of all wetlands plants and animals are at risk of extinction. Some studies calculate wetland loss rates in California at a staggering 90%. The La Cienega Wetland Complex has been compromised by urbanization, the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta, by agriculture and flood protection, the San Pablo Bay, by gold mining and diking, and the Central Valley by turning floodplains into farmland. Urban development and corresponding infrastructure, oil extraction, groundwater withdrawals, and pollution can all erode wetlands that might include vernal pools, riparian habitat, and coastal wetlands. At the time of Spanish colonization, it is estimated that roughly 7 million acres of vernal pools once existed in California; today less than 13% remain. In a 2018 article, the UN Climate Change News stated that wetlands, essential regulators of global climate, are disappearing three times faster than forests. The urgency continues for us to preserve Nature's delicate balance and the remaining wetlands of the world. Listen to John Villa, Executive Director of the Huntington Beach Wetlands Conservancy share his insights about the essential value and urgent need to protect local and global wetlands. John Villa has an MBA with an emphasis in Technology Management. The Huntington Beach Wetlands Conservancy is a non-profit founded in 1985 with the goal of acquiring, restoring, and protecting the coastal wetlands on the Orange County coast for future generations. The Huntington Beach Wetlands is part of a system that once spanned nearly 3,000 acres; a precious 180 acres now remain in southeast Huntington Beach, where the Santa Ana River meets the Pacific Ocean. He is also the appointed Commissioner for the Huntington Beach Public Works Department, and Board Member for Visit HB, Huntington Beach Chamber of Commerce, Huntington Beach Council on Aging, and the Orange County River Park Group. National Bike Summit is the biggest collection of bike advocates and it happens in DC. This will be the first time I'm lawyering it up in the bike advocacy space, so it's going to be fun. Fellow Star Wars nerds! I have the Disney audio but need some time to distill it. Look for that in March. The Kessel Run: A Central Florida Bike Tour Takeaways Reminder to check out part 1 in PSP 194 and part 2 in PSP 195. 1 - Central Florida doesn't expect a bike tour, but I've found it to be better cycling than its reputation 2- Urban riding is great training for bicycle touring amongst motorized vehicles 3 - Disneyworld and Airports: not super bike friendly unless they are 4 - Ride With GPS is a fantastic tool for riding in "new to me" places, but spending some time with Google Streetview can demystify spots that look gnarly on a map 5 - I don't think I'll ever stick to one style of touring and Florida proves me why 6 - Four seasons FTW 7 - Ultralight does not mean ultrastupid - I got lucky with the way the rain went considering I forgot my rain pants. Double check and use a pack list, don't just assume everything is in your bags like I did! 8 - Off-road opportunity in Florida appears to be abundant 9 - Bromptons are great, and require less maintenance but I got very lucky on the seat post (broken clamp before, itty bitty screw after) 10 - Yes, you can absolutely ride with a lightsaber on your rear rack. Unveiling The Missing Link bike tour I'll be flying to southern California with my Brompton to ride the one piece of the California coast I missed in my 2014 tour and connect two dots between Anaheim and Oceanside that I bypassed by train. It's a short link in an otherwise uninterrupted chain. It's the missing link. 2014 ride was dominated by camping but towards the end there is a long stretch of southern CA with limited camping. Combine a dwindling budget with a reticence to deal with a question mark of Camp Pendleton access, I decided to bike inland for a cheaper hotel stay, add some miles through Los Angeles, and take the train past Camp Pendleton to get to the next campground. Camp Pendleton access has been an issue since 9/11 and in 2014 the system was practically a day-to-day assessment I didn't want to deal with. Now, the system in place is arguably worse, but the way around the base is clearer - Interstate 5 is legally available for the 6 or so miles. Permits are available at the south gate, but I've decided to just go with the flow and ride 30 minutes rather than get a ride down to get the permit and go back north again. Arguably a minor challenge—the cycling should be easy, but the zooming cars are a concern— but with wide shoulders I feel comfortable with the choice. On my train ride down in 2014 the views from the Surfliner made me regret the decision to be on a train. Now I get a chance to ride the coast along a truly iconic stretch of beaches in Orange County and south. Will be riding the Brompton and forgoing camping again (there aren't great options in this stretch). Will tackle this in two days of about 50ish miles each. First stretch includes a lot of trail time along the Santa Ana River to the coast to rejoin the Pacific Coast route. Then I'll be sticking on that for the ride south. I plan to wrap up in San Diego but the link completes well north of there in Oceanside, which gives me an out via a fast forward if the need arises. Whether I wrap up in SD or Oceanside, I have a train to take me back up to Burbank to fly back, because LAX is apparently a disaster these days

Agua Mansa ("gentle water") is a former settlement in an unincorporated area of San Bernardino County, near Colton, California, United States. Now a ghost town, only the cemetery remains, it once was the largest settlement in San Bernardino County. The town was established in 1845 in Mexican Alta California. It was on the Santa Ana River, across from the Mexican era settlement of La Placita. Agua Mansa and La Placita were the first non-native settlements in the San Bernardino Valley. Together known as "San Salvador", they were also the largest settlements between Santa Fe de Nuevo México and the Pueblo de Los Ángeles in the 1840s. Agua Mansa is designated California Historical Landmark (No. 121). The marker is located at Agua Mansa Pioneer Cemetery, the only site that remains of the once flourishing town. The first burial occurred in 1852, and the last occurred 111 years later in 1963. In 1955, a descendant of the original Agua Mansa families established "Friends for the Preservation of the Agua Mansa Pioneer Cemetery" and the volunteers of this group refurbished the cemetery, fenced it off and added a gate. In 1967, the cemetery became a branch of the San Bernardino County Museum after its acquisition by San Bernardino County. Records of who is buried in the cemetery are incomplete but about 1,400 (as of October 2018) names have been identified out of a total of 2,000 estimated burials. Only a few grave markers remain today. The earliest known interment was that of Louis Robidoux, who came to California in 1844 and bought the Jurupa Rancho near today's City of Riverside. Another burial was that of Cornelius Jensen in 1886; Jensen was a Danish sea captain who established a store at Agua Mansa before moving to part of the Robidoux ranch. Jensen's wife, Mercedes Alvarado, is also buried in the cemetery along with other members of her family. Lorenzo Trujillo, the original patriarch of the community, is also believed to rest somewhere in a grave that long ago lost its marker. Isaac Slover, a mountain man and bear hunter who came to California in his old age (and who was killed in 1854 by a bear), is also buried in the cemetery. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/paranormaltimeout/message

How to best recycle batteries is a challenge we need to overcome in the U.S. but there has been some significant progress. The group Call2Recycle says more than seven million pounds of batteries were diverted from landfills and recycled last year. To help us understand more about recycling batteries, we’re joined by CEO and President Carl Smith. As climate change intensifies, things like extreme drought followed by extremely heavy rainfall will become more commonplace. That’s what’s being experienced right now in parts of California. Many suburban and urban communities aren’t adapted for these more intense swings between wet and dry. But the Pacific Institute, a global water think tank, has been looking at how specific areas like the Santa Ana River watershed area can better manage the land to deal with it. We’re joined by the Pacific Institute’s Director of Research, Heather Cooley
