Cuvier was wrong...

Tonight, we'll read from the seventh chapter of British naturalist Charles Darwin's “The Voyage of the Beagle” titled “Buenos Aires and Santa Fe”. “The Voyage of the Beagle” is the title most commonly given to the book first published in 1839 as Darwin's “Journal and Remarks”, bringing him considerable fame and respect. The book chronicles Darwin's five-year journey aboard the HMS Beagle, during which he made groundbreaking observations that contributed to his theory of evolution by natural selection. If you'd like to start from the beginning, the first episode of this series aired on June 10th, 2024, with subsequent monthly episodes exploring Darwin's journey in detail. This chapter explores Darwin's overland journey from Buenos Aires to Santa Fe, Argentina, providing vivid descriptions of the landscape, people, and wildlife he encounters. The region is dominated by flat, fertile plains, part of the expansive Pampas, which Darwin admires for their vastness and agricultural potential. He observes the lifestyles of the local inhabitants, including gauchos, whose skills in horsemanship and simple yet resourceful way of life fascinate him. Darwin also reflects on the history and politics of the region, commenting on the social conditions and the impact of Spanish colonization. He describes the wildlife in detail, noting the abundance of large birds like rheas and the diversity of smaller animals. Darwin continues his geological studies, examining rock formations and fossils that reveal the natural history of the area. — read by 'N' — Sign up for Snoozecast+ to get expanded, ad-free access by going to snoozecast.com/plus! Even if you don't know what the man's about you've probably heard the name Charles Darwin. At the very least you've seen one of those Jesus Fish car decals with legs and the name Darwin in the middle. Well Mr. Darwin was kind of a jack of all trades when it came to the fields of science. What started as a childhood passion for insects grew into a love for the natural sciences of the world, geology and biology primarily. What cemented Charles Darwin as a revolutionary of science would be his introduction of the theory of evolution in a world where religion and divine creation were fact. He challenged the very belief in where we come from and how we came to be here. What inspired Darwin to pursue this theory came about during a five year voyage around the world to study, collect, catalogue and sometimes eat literally anything and everything he came across in these strange lands he traveled. Join us as we discuss the Father of Evolution.

The Dutch ship Oosterschelde is on a two-year mission to work with future scientists who will study species discovered by Charles Darwin and develop projects to save them. The journey is retracing Darwin's famous travels onboard the HMS Beagle, from 1831-1836. Two hundred young naturalists from around the world are expected to participate in the project over the course of two years. Here, 11 of the 200 participants, known as Darwin 200 leaders, spent time studying the environment and its flora and fauna, big and small, like scavenging beetles and sea turtles. And they were joined by Sarah Darwin, the great-great-granddaughter of Charles Darwin, herself a botanist. “The Darwin 200 project is a really innovative project,” she says. “They are empowering young people from all over the world... These people will then go back to their own countries with this newfound knowledge and this incredibly supportive network of fellow Darwin 200 leaders, as well as scientists and conservationists.” Darwin set sail aboard the HMS Beagle in 1831 on a five-year voyage that passed around South America and went to Australia and New Zealand. The visit to the Galápagos Islands was one of the most famous stops during his journey. “Charles Darwin was 22 when he left the coast of the UK on HMS Beagle on this five-year voyage. So he was quite similar in a way to a lot of these young people,” says Sarah Darwin. “He was enthusiastic. He wasn't a trained scientist, but he was very, very passionate about nature, and nature was his inspiration. And so actually he shares a lot of characteristics with these Darwin 200 leaders,” she adds. Sarah Darwin worked with the young conservationists on the islands for two weeks, studying the Galápagos tomato. The exchange of skills and knowledge between all the participants of the Darwin 200 project is inspiring, she says: “The idea is, is that we'll be educating these young people. But of course, in actual fact, they also educate us. I mean, I learned so much about communication. They're so skilled at how to communicate to their peer groups. " It will run until July 20, 2025, when the ship will return to the UK. This article was provided by The Associated Press.

This was the third volume of “The Narrative of the Voyages of H.M. Ships Adventure and Beagle”, the other volumes of which were written or edited by the commanders of the ships. “Journal and Remarks” covers Darwin's part in the second survey expedition of the ship HMS Beagle. Due to the popularity of Darwin's account, the publisher reissued it later in 1839 as “Darwin's Journal of Researches”. A republication of the book in 1905 introduced the title “The Voyage of the "Beagle"”, by which it is now best known. — read by 'N' — Sign up for Snoozecast+ to get expanded, ad-free access by going to snoozecast.com/plus! Cary Odes has been a standup comic for 45 years, coming up through the ranks at the legendary Comedy Store in Los Angeles, sharing the stage with David Letterman, Richard Pryor and Robin Williams, under the tutelage of Mitzi Shore, where he was the very first paid regular. More importantly to Ojai, he's been teaching standup comedy here in Ojai for more than 20 years, turning a bunch of boring schlubs into comic dynamos, presenting their "tight fives" to adoring crowds. On Sunday, April 14th, his latest batch of comics will perform to a sold-out audience at Kim Maxwell Studios, with another show planned for Friday, April 18th. We talked about how Cary got into comedy as an extension of him and a friend entertaining themselves, then realizing in college that he had a special talent for making people laugh. After studying in Chicago with the improvisational great Del Close, Cary nearly got his big break on the show "Bosom Buddies," and had his role snatched by a then-unknown Tom Hanks, and has steadily worked every since, touring the country, and now teaching his eight-week master classes in which students learn the components and craft of a joke (the premise, the setup, the act out, the turn) and perform the alchemy in which they take their pain and vulnerabilities and turn into the healing balm of laughter. We talked about how his style has evolved over the years, the joys of teaching, anecdotes from the trenches of the standup circuit, how to bomb on stage gracefully, and how comedy might be the Next Big Thing in the healing arts. We did not talk about kitchen knife-sharpening techniques, wolverine-trimmed parkas or the voyages of the HMS Beagle. "We should every night call ourselves to an account: What infirmity have I mastered today? What passions opposed? What temptation resisted? What virtue acquired? Our vices will abate of themselves if they be brought every day to the shrift." - Seneca, "Moral Letters to Lucilius," Letter 83."At the end of the day, you should always be able to ask yourself: What weakness did I overcome today? What virtue did I acquire?" - Marcus Aurelius, "Meditations," Book 5, Section 9 (paraphrased).Three years ago, I started journaling everynight before bed. Inspired by renowned writer Jim Collins (Author of Good to Great & Built to Last), I developed a system that not only allows me to reflect on my day but also to objectively rate my experiences, track my progress, and sometimes preserve my memories by saving photographs. This week, I will share my personal approach to journaling and offer you the tools to start your own journal which will foster personal growth and allow you to gain a deeper insight into your life experiences. Journaling every night has become an integral and profoundly impactful activity in my life, one that I hope to continue indefinitely. When I tell people that I journal, I'm amazed at how many friends and mentors will share with me that they journal too. There are many remarkable people throughout history that journaled, including Leonardo da Vinci, Charles Darwin, Theodore Roosevelt, Thomas Edison, Ernest Hemingway, Winston Churchill, John Adams, Ludwig van Beethoven, Marcus Aurelius, Seneca, and Epictetus. In my three years of consistent journaling, I have experienced numerous benefits that have significantly impacted my life, both in terms of self-awareness and overall well-being. Here are the main advantages that I have discovered through this daily practice:* Enhanced reflection and gratitude: Journaling at the end of the night provides me an opportunity to reflect on the day's events and appreciate the positive experiences that might otherwise be overshadowed by our natural tendency to dwell on negative occurrences. This practice helps to cultivate gratitude and fosters a more balanced perspective on my daily life.* Greater understanding of the connection between my activities and my emotions: Journaling allows me to analyze how the choices I make throughout the day impact my mood and overall satisfaction. For example, I've noticed a clear correlation between exercising and experiencing positive emotions at the end of the day, while poor diet choices and excessive screen time often lead to negative feelings. This awareness enables me to break unproductive patterns and prioritize activities that contribute to my happiness and well-being. As a self-proclaimed data nerd, this insight is particularly valuable for making informed decisions about my daily routine.* A valuable record for future reference and reminiscing: Maintaining a running log of my experiences, thoughts, and emotions creates a treasure trove of memories and insights that can be revisited and enjoyed at any time. With my digital journal, I can easily look back to a specific date, search for moments shared with a particular person, or explore similar experiences from the past. This archive not only serves as a powerful tool for personal growth but also allows me to reconnect with cherished memories and appreciate the journey I've been on.Here are some practical examples of how journaling helped me. After my friend Joe passed away, I wanted to reminisce about the memories we shared together. I wondered when we had last spent time together. By searching my journal, I could relive the moments I had saved about Joe. It was a healing experience, allowing me to recall the wonderful times we had in greater detail. One of my favorite features on Facebook is the "memories" feature, where you can look back on posts and pictures from the same day in previous years. I do the same thing with my journal. I'll look back one year from today and read about what I was doing at that time. Since it's my personal journal and not my public Facebook page, the entries are more personal and genuine compared to what I share with the world on Facebook. It helps me remember and appreciate my experiences from a year ago, which I often forget. Most recently, this was helpful because I could look back on my beginnings as a runner. I could see my excitement from a year ago when I completed my first full run around the lake. I was able to relive the thrill of that accomplishment back then, but I also appreciated the progress I've made since. I now regularly complete that run and in much less time. It's nice to take a moment to celebrate my progress and improvement as a runner. The journal allowed me to do this. Here's How: A Bullet Proof System for JournalingThe Tools: * Google Form to Record My Journal (Shared Below)* Google Calendar Reminder: To remind me every night to journal. * Short Cut on My Phone Home Screen: Instructions below for setting it up on iPhone. My Journaling Process: Each night, I get a reminder from my Google Calendar at 9:30pm to remind me to journal. In the calendar reminder there is a link to the Google Form to complete my journal. I also have the link saved on the homescreen of my iPhone and in my bookmark toolbar on Google Chrome. This way I can always quickly get into the journal. It's important to make it as easy as possible to journal. As we talked about before, I like to apply the principles from the book "Atomic Habits." I use "The Four Laws of Behavior Change" to create new habits: make it obvious, make it attractive, make it easy, and make it satisfying. The goal is to make journaling as easy as possible. Remembering to journal and then starting to write is probably the hardest part. Once I'm in the journal I begin by rating my day on a scale from -2 to 2, with 2 representing an incredible, unforgettable day and -2 signifying a particularly challenging or difficult one. While this rating is inherently subjective, I strive to maintain as much objectivity as possible in my assessment. The rating provides a quantifiable measurement of my satisfaction with the day. Following this, I proceed to write a journal entry detailing the events of my day. Some entries are concise, consisting of just a sentence or two, while others span multiple paragraphs, delving into the nuances and emotions of my experiences. To complement my written reflections, I also have the option to upload photographs from the day, creating a visual record of my memories if I feel it would be helpful. To facilitate this daily practice, I've created a straightforward and user-friendly Google Form, which serves as the platform for my journal entries. I like it because it's completely free and it's very easy to use and edit. I'll share a copy that you can use to kickstart your own journaling journey. Here are Two Examples from My Journals: A Good Day & A Bad DayI thought it might be helpful for you to see two examples from my own journal. Here is an example of a gread day. Friday - 5/5/2023 - Rating: 2 (Great Day) Today was a fantastic day, even though I didn't accomplish much work. I began by taking a refreshing run around the lake before indulging in a bath, despite knowing I probably shouldn't. (Baths correlate with lazy days for me.) Later, I had a conversation with PNC bank, and Laken arrived home from work earlier than expected. We embarked on our vacation to Grand Haven and Spring Lake, making a pitstop at the XXXXX Donuts production facility. Lane had an incredible opportunity to create his own donuts, while the owner, gave us a tour of the facility. It was really cool to learn that he can produce up to 14,000 donuts per day, with the potential to expand even further. Our journey continued to Grand Haven, where I'm scheduled to skydive with Skydive Grand Haven at 1 pm on Saturday. We checked into the Holiday Inn in Spring Lake, which has an excellent location right by the water, both outdoor and indoor pools, a fitness center, and a good price. The hotel even has boat docks and a spacious parking lot. We should come back. For dinner, we went to Fuel, which turned out to be great. Afterward, we visited Michael and Noella's home. They have an extensive circle of neighbor friends, all with children of their own. At one point, there must have been 20 kids playing in the yard. Lane had a blast and was the center of attention, bringing the donuts for everyone to enjoy. Lane climbed a tree for the first time with the help of some friendly girls. It was great to see him getting along with the kids so well.I couldn't help but feel a bit of envy towards Michael and Noella for having such a close-knit group of friends as neighbors, and their children having so many playmates their age. Perhaps "jealousy" isn't the right word – it's more of a longing for Lane to have a similar network of friends, especially since he doesn't have siblings. It made me wish we could provide him with a larger community to grow up alongside. We all gathered around a bonfire while the children played, and the adults shared some drinks, yard games, & pickleball. We returned to the hotel and settled in for the night around 10 pm, bringing an end to a great family day. Here is an example of a bad day: 4/24/2023 - Rating -2 (A very Bad Day) I was feeling extremely unwell today due to a stomach bug. Nausea and stomach upset all day long. The sickness lasted for about 24 hours, and I couldn't eat anything. It was brutal. Lots of time in the bathroom. Initially, I thought my poor eating habits from the previous days caused it, but it seems more like food poisoning. I must remember to eat healthy. It might not have caused this issues but it never helps. Indulging in unhealthy food may provide momentary pleasure, but I always feel like s**t later. By choosing to eat healthily, I might sacrifice those brief moments of satisfaction, but I will feel much better most of the time. I am committed to improving my diet.Historic Greats: Journal Keepers and ThinkersMany famous people throughout history have kept journals or diaries as a way to record their thoughts, experiences, and ideas. Here are a few notable individuals who were known to write in their journals regularly, often on a nightly basis:* Leonardo da Vinci the famous Italian artist and polymath who wrote extensively in his notebooks and journals throughout his life, covering a wide range of topics including art, science, engineering, and anatomy.* Charles Darwin, the biologist, kept detailed journals and notebooks during his journey on the HMS Beagle, where he recorded his observations and ideas that would later form the foundation of his theory of evolution.* Theodore Roosevelt, the 26th President of the United States, was a dedicated journal-keeper who recorded his thoughts and experiences from his time as a young naturalist and explorer to his years in the White House.* Thomas Edison, the American inventor and businessman, documented his ideas, experiments, and inventions throughout his life in numerous notebooks and journals.* Ernest Hemingway, the American author and journalist, maintained journals and notebooks during his travels and writing career, which gave insight into his creative process and personal experiences.* Winston Churchill, a British statesman and author who served as Prime Minister during World War II, kept a diary that documented his thoughts and experiences during his time in office.* John Adams, the second President of the United States, was a prolific writer who kept diaries and journals throughout his life, recording his thoughts on politics, philosophy, and personal matters.* Ludwig van Beethoven, the composer and pianist, documented his thoughts on music, art, and life in a series of conversation books and personal journals.——-The Science of Journaling every night and the benefits You know I love data. So here it is… Research has consistently shown that regular journaling offers a range of significant benefits for individuals, including enhanced emotional well-being, stress reduction, improved immune function, better cognitive performance, and improved sleep quality. By expressing thoughts and emotions through writing, individuals can process traumatic experiences, better manage stress, and even boost their immune system. Journaling also helps to organize thoughts, clarify ideas, and facilitate problem-solving, leading to improved cognitive processing and working memory capacity. Furthermore, engaging in journaling before bedtime has been linked to reduced worry and stress, resulting in better sleep quality. Overall, nightly journaling can contribute to a healthier, more balanced lifestyle with numerous physical and psychological benefits.* Emotional well-being: A study conducted by Pennebaker and Beall (1986) demonstrated that expressive writing or journaling about emotional experiences can lead to improvements in mental health. Participants who wrote about traumatic experiences showed significant decreases in distress and better overall well-being compared to those who wrote about neutral topics.Source: Pennebaker, J. W., & Beall, S. K. (1986). Confronting a traumatic event: Toward an understanding of inhibition and disease. Journal of Abnormal Psychology, 95(3), 274-281.* Stress reduction: A study by Smyth et al. (1998) found that writing about emotional experiences helped to reduce stress and improve health outcomes for participants with chronic illnesses. Source: Smyth, J. M., Stone, A. A., Hurewitz, A., & Kaell, A. (1998). Effects of writing about stressful experiences on symptom reduction in patients with asthma or rheumatoid arthritis: a randomized trial. Journal of the American Medical Association, 281(14), 1304-1309.* Improved immune function: A study by Pennebaker et al. (1988) found that writing about emotional experiences can boost immune function. Participants who engaged in expressive writing exhibited increased T-lymphocyte production, an essential component of the immune system.Source: Pennebaker, J. W., Kiecolt-Glaser, J. K., & Glaser, R. (1988). Disclosure of traumas and immune function: health implications for psychotherapy. Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, 56(2), 239-245.* Enhanced cognitive function: Journaling can help improve cognitive function by organizing thoughts, clarifying ideas, and facilitating problem-solving. A study by Klein and Boals (2001) found that participants who engaged in expressive writing showed improved working memory capacity, which is crucial for cognitive processing.Source: Klein, K., & Boals, A. (2001). Expressive writing can increase working memory capacity. Journal of Experimental Psychology: General, 130(3), 520-533.* Improved sleep: Journaling before bedtime can help reduce bedtime worry and stress, making it easier to fall asleep. A study by Harvey et al. (2002) found that participants who engaged in journaling before bedtime reported improvements in sleep quality. Source: Harvey, A. G., & Farrell, C. (2003). The efficacy of a Pennebaker-like writing intervention for poor sleepers. Behaviour Research and Therapy, 41(2), 227-236.These studies provide evidence of the potential benefits of regular journaling, particularly when focusing on emotional experiences or engaging in expressive writing. Journaling every night may help individuals process emotions, reduce stress, improve cognitive function, and enhance overall well-being. I know it has for me personally. In conclusion, my three-year experiment with nightly journaling has profoundly impacted my life positively. I has fostered self-awareness, personal growth, and overall well-being. On September 15, 1835, the Galapagos Islands welcomed the arrival of a ship that had traversed South America, offering a strikingly different landscape. The vessel, HMS Beagle, still had just over a year before it would return to England. Aboard the ship was a young naturalist named Charles Darwin, who was unaware that his brief five-week exploration of the Galapagos Archipelago would ultimately inspire him to pen a world-altering book. This work would revolutionize our comprehension of the origins and diversity of the countless species that have existed and continue to exist on Earth. Evolution Talk is also a book! An "extremely rare" manuscript signed by English naturalist Charles Darwin is expected to fetch up to $790,000 at a Sotheby's auction next month. The document contains a passage from the famous 1859 work On the Origin of Species, in which Darwin put forth his theory of evolution by natural selection. The document was once thought to be a discarded page from an earlier manuscript of the work. But experts now understand the manuscript was written in 1865 and sent to Hermann Kindt, the editor of the Autographic Mirror who had requested a signed writing sample from Darwin. While some of Darwin's notes and manuscript leaves have survived over the last hundred or more years, he was known to obsessively revise his publications, often discarding pages from working drafts and treating them as scrap paper, making any autograph manuscript extremely rare," Sotheby's said in a statement. On the Origin of Species was voted the most influential academic book of all time in a public poll held during Academic Book Week in 2015, beating out other seminal works including The Communist Manifesto by Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels, The Republic by Plato, and the complete works of William Shakespeare.2015年的“学术图书周”的公开投票中,《物种起源》被评为有史以来最具影响力的学术著作,击败了卡尔·马克思和弗里德里希·恩格斯的《共产党宣言》、柏拉图的《理想国》和威廉·莎士比亚全集。The book offers Darwin's revolutionary idea that species evolve incrementally over generations via the process of natural selection. I have now recapitulated the chief facts and considerations which have thoroughly convinced me that species have been modified, during a long course of descent, by the preservation or the natural selection of many successive slight favorable variations," the document reads.“我现在重述了主要事实和考虑,这些事实和考虑让我彻底相信,在漫长的进化过程中,通过许多连续的轻微有利变异的保存或自然选择,物种已经被改变,”该文件写道。Darwin backed up his theory with evidence collected during his 1831-1836 voyage on the HMS Beagle, during which he observed and collected specimens from a number of species. One major observation occurred on the Galapagos Islands off the coast of Ecuador. Darwin noted that the finches on the island were similar to finches on the mainland, however, the availability of different foods in each area had led to discrepancies in beak anatomy. I cannot believe that a false theory would explain, as it seems to me that the theory of natural selection does explain, the several large classes of facts above specified," the excerpt adds. "It is no valid objection that science as yet throws no light on the far higher problem of the essence or origin of life."“我不相信一个错误的理论会做出这样解释,正如我认为自然选择理论确实解释了上述几大类事实一样,”手稿片段显示,“科学还没有对更高层次的关于生命本质或起源的问题进行阐释,这不是有效的反对意见。”The manuscript will be placed on display at Sotheby's in New York between Nov 30 and Dec 8, and online bids will be accepted between Nov 25 and Dec 8. The auction house estimates that the document will fetch between $600,000 and $790,000. The auction, which is titled Age of Wonder, will also include a first edition of On the Origin of Species and a copy of On the Tendency of Species to form Varieties, which is a scientific paper written by Darwin and Welsh naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace. incrementally英[ˌɪŋkrəˈmentəli] 美[ˌɪŋkrəˈmentəli]adv.递增地recapitulate 英[ˌriːkəˈpɪtʃuleɪt] 美[ˌriːkəˈpɪtʃuleɪt]v.

Lindell made the revelation in a video posted to social media. https://twitter.com/i/status/1569847934849634306 - Play Video Lindell further elaborated about the incident on his show, "The Lindell Report." He said he was going through the Hardee's drive-thru when FBI agents approached him and demanded he hand over his phone. He said that he eventually handed over his phone after consulting his lawyer. Lindell said that the search warrant was likely related to his claims about voting machines manufactured by the Dominion company. He has been one of the foremost proponents of the conspiracy theory that the election was stolen from former President Donald Trump through the use of fraudulent voting machines. The search warrant was likely a part of a dozens of subpoenas reportedly issued by the Department of Justice in connection to the probe into efforts to overturn the official results of the election. Dominion filed a $1.3 billion lawsuit in February 2021 over Lindell's accusations. He issued a defiant response over the lawsuit in January. "I want Dominion to put up their lawsuit because we have 100% evidence that China and other countries used their machines to steal the election," Lindell said. https://www.dailywire.com/news/white-house-grapples-to-avoid-nationwide-railroad-strike-that-could-send-gas-prices-soaring-hamstring-supply-chain White House Grapples To Avoid Nationwide Railroad Strike That Could Send Gas Prices Soaring, Hamstring Supply Chain The White House is seeking to prevent a nationwide railroad strike that could worsen supply chain bottlenecks and increase gas prices. BNSF, CSX, Norfolk Southern, and Union Pacific announced embargoes on certain shipments earlier this week as negotiations continue with two of the nation’s largest rail unions — the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen and SMART Transportation Division. The Biden administration created a Presidential Emergency Board via executive order two months ago to facilitate the negotiations. “We have made crystal clear to the interested parties the harm that American families, businesses and farmers, and communities would experience if they were not to reach a resolution,” White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters on Tuesday, adding that the administration is working with shipping, trucking, and air freight companies to “see how they can step in and keep goods moving in case of this rail shutdown.” Labor Secretary Marty Walsh is slated to host union leaders and rail company executives on Wednesday morning, according to a statement from a Department of Labor spokesperson. Supply chain bottlenecks driven by widespread labor shortages and lockdowns in Asian manufacturing hubs have impacted the American economy over the past two years, contributing to higher inflation as consumer goods fail to reach shelves. The daily cost of a nationwide rail shutdown could amount to $2 billion, according to a report from the Association of American Railroads. Moving shipments to truckers would require the equivalent of 467,000 additional long-haul trucks per day — growth that would take “years of concerted effort” to achieve, especially amid a shortage of more than 80,000 truck drivers. The Retail Industry Leaders Association explained in a July letter to the Biden administration that freight rail accounts for 40% of long-distance shipping volume — “more than any other mode of transportation.” Last month, the White House suggested increasing railroad employee pay by 24% over the next two years — a measure that would lead to an average raise of $11,000 per employee. “An agreement based on these terms would lead to the largest general wage increase in nearly 40 years,” Association of American Railroads CEO Ian Jefferies said in a statement. Gas prices could increase between $0.35 and $0.75 per gallon if a railroad strike continued for multiple days, warned GasBuddy analyst Patrick De Haan. “Since ethanol primarily moves via rail, and much of the nation blends ethanol into all grades, it would be a big challenge,” he remarked on social media. The national average price of gasoline was $2.38 per gallon when Biden assumed office and increased to $3.53 per gallon by the start of the Russian invasion. After surpassing $5.00 per gallon in early June, prices have subsided to $3.70 per gallon as of Wednesday, according to data from AAA. https://dailycaller.com/2022/09/14/cpac-letter-republican-offices-support-bill-banning-gender-surgeries-minors-marjorie-taylor-greene/ CPAC Pressuring Every GOP Office To Support Bill Banning Gender Surgeries On Minors The Conservative Political Action Coalition (CPAC) sent a letter Tuesday to every Republican in the House of Representatives, calling on them to cosponsor a bill that would ban gender surgeries on minors. The letter, which was first obtained by the Daily Caller, was sent to every House Republican Chief of Staff, Deputy Chief of Staff and Legislative Director and urges them to back Republican Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s “Protect Children’s Innocence Act.” The bill charges any person who knowingly performed gender-affirming care on a minor with a Class C Felony, which could put them in prison for 10 to 25 years or require a maximum $250,000 fine. The legislation, originally introduced on Aug. 19, also prohibits all taxpayer-funded gender-affirming care, prohibits institutions of higher education from providing instruction on gender-affirming care, and more. “Across the country we have seen the radical gender politics of the Woke Left infiltrate all facets of our lives. Taylor Greene’s Protect Children’s Innocence Act as common-sense legislation meant to protect children. Accordingly, CPAC supports the Protect Children’s Innocence Act and urges you to co-sponsor the legislation,” the letter continues. The Chronicle reported Tuesday: A sweeping poll commissioned by The Chronicle drew sobering results: Nearly half of respondents said they were victims of theft in the last five years, while roughly a quarter were physically attacked or threatened. The majority had negative impressions of law enforcement. The SFNext poll asked a random sample of 1,653 city residents more than 90 questions about numerous aspects of life in San Francisco. It was conducted in late June and July, and respondents reflect the city’s demographics. Forty-five percent of people surveyed for the poll said they had an item stolen within the last five years. Proportionally, Black and mixed-race respondents felt a more severe impact than other groups, with a majority — 54% of Black respondents and 55% of mixed-race respondents — reporting they had suffered theft. Property crime rates were lower for white residents, 43% of whom had a possession swiped within the time period. Critics of the poll suggest that it may have underreported crimes against Asian-American residents, who feel vulnerable lately. The Chronicle also reported that two-thirds (65%) of residents said life in the city had declined since they had moved there: “[T]he greatest unhappiness stems from frustration with the city’s biggest, seemingly intractable problems — particularly homelessness, public safety and housing affordability — as well as with the politicians who haven’t solved them yet.” Dime Payments Dime Payments is a Christian owned processing payment business. The Boston Athletic Association confirmed on Monday that the new category would be included in all its races, including the 5K, 10K, and the half marathon going forward, according to the Daily Mail. The new category was seen in the registration information released Monday for the Marathon’s 127th run set to be held on April 17, 2023. Officials have not yet finished crafting its qualifying standards for so-called “nonbinary” runners, but the online applications will include nonbinary as a gender option. “‘Discussions are ongoing with nonbinary athletes in an effort to further promote inclusion at all BAA events. We view this first year as an opportunity to learn and grow together,” the BAA said in a statement. The Boston Marathon is not the first race to add such a category. Race organizations in Philadelphia and Brooklyn have already set up nonbinary categories for sponsored races. Some on social media worried that allowing nonbinary runners will lower standards for entrants. One social media user, for instance, noted that if they don’t make the standards hew toward the higher male standards, slower runners will abuse the category just to get qualified in a race for which it is notoriously hard to win entry. He said he was going through the Hardee's drive-thru when FBI agents approached him and demanded he hand over his phone. Cuvier was wrong... The grandson of Erasmus Darwin and Josiah Wedgwood, he studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh and biology at Cambridge. He was recommended as a naturalist on HMS Beagle, which was bound on a long scientific survey expedition to South America and the South Seas (1831–36). His zoological and geological discoveries on the voyage resulted in numerous important publications and formed the basis of his theories of evolution. Seeing competition between individuals of a single species, he recognized that within a local population the individual bird, for example, with the sharper beak might have a better chance to survive and reproduce and that if such traits were passed on to new generations, they would be predominant in future populations. He saw this natural selection as the mechanism by which advantageous variations were passed on to later generations and less advantageous traits gradually disappeared. He worked on his theory for more than 20 years before publishing it in his famous On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection (1859). The book was immediately in great demand, and Darwin's intensely controversial theory was accepted quickly in most scientific circles; most opposition came from religious leaders. Though Darwin's ideas were modified by later developments in genetics and molecular biology, his work remains central to modern evolutionary theory. His many other important works included Variation in Animals and Plants Under Domestication (1868) and The Descent of Man… (1871). If the link doesn't work, copy and paste this URL into your browser - https://wisuru.com/biography/charles-darwin/ Summary Cambridge University When Charles Darwin returned home without finishing his medical degree, his father was disappointed. He thought that if medicine did not interest Darwin, he should become a parson [Citation1]. So, he sent Darwin to Cambridge University, so that he could do a BA degree and become a parson. But in Cambridge University, too, Darwin spent most of his time pursuing his hobbies. His most important hobby was collecting beetles, which was a big craze at that time. But besides that, he also loved riding horses and shooting. But besides spending a lot of time on his hobbies, he disregarded them and started studying whenever exams neared. Therefore, he could pass his BA degree on time. During his time at Cambridge University, he came to like the classes of his botany professor, Revd. John Stevens Henslow. Henslow would eventually become Darwin's mentor. Desire to travel After his final exams were over, Darwin read several books. One of these books was the personal narrative of a German explorer called Alexander von Humboldt. Humbolt had spent five years traveling extensively on the American continent. He then described his travel from a scientific point of view. After reading this book, Darwin decided to travel the world, and contribute to science. The place he chose for this purpose was the Canary Islands in the Atlantic Ocean. But his trip got postponed for a year. So, he got sad. But his botany professor Henslow recommended him for an expedition which was arranged by the geologist Adam Sedgwick. So, Sedgwick took Darwin with him to the expedition in Wales, England. The expedition lasted two weeks. After he returned home from the expedition, he found a letter addressed to him. The Voyage that changed everything At the recommendation of Darwin's botany professor Henslow, the captain of the ship called HMS Beagle decided to take Darwin on his voyage. HMS Beagle was preparing for its second voyage to South America to survey the land and water bodies there. The ship needed someone to investigate the geology of these areas. This is the position that Darwin was supposed to fill in. The ship and its crew, along with Darwin, set sail in 1831. Darwin was just 22 years old at that time. The 5-year-voyage (A map of this voyage is attached below) turned out to be a boon for Darwin. He visited four continents and collected countless samples of the plants, animals, birds, and fossils there. After he returned to England, he gave these samples to zoologists, so that they could examine them. Darwin's natural history collections proved extremely useful. Darwin started publishing the reports of the analysis of the samples, provided by the zoologists, as a book called 'Zoology of the Voyage of HMS Beagle.' He even got a grant of £1,000 for publishing these books. Darwin planned to publish several volumes of this book. His voyage, the samples he had collected during the voyage, and the reports of these samples provided by zoologists helped him understand a lot about evolution. So, he started working on formulating a theory about evolution. Darwin worked too hard to finish his books, as well as formulate his own theory of evolution at the same time. But due to the resulting stress, he got sick and was bedridden. He started trembling and vomiting, suffered from stomach pain, and severe boils started appearing on his body. Even though he got better with time, these symptoms reoccurred again and again in his life, whenever he got overstressed. His disease was never diagnosed or cured. Evolution theories before Darwin's time Even before Darwin proposed his theory of evolution, there were two theories of evolution that were famous. But they had a lot of opposition.  The first of these theories was the 'Theory of Acquired Characteristics' or 'Lamarckism.' It was proposed by Jean-Baptiste Lamarck [Citation2], a French zoologist. He proposed, that when environments change, organisms change their behavior, and as a result, the organs of these organisms change as well. These organisms then pass on these changes to their offspring.  The second theory was proposed by none other than Charles Darwin's paternal grandfather, Erasmus Darwin. In his book called 'Zooomia,' [Citation3] Erasmus argues that all organisms undergo changes constantly, which their offspring inherit from them. Welcome to My AP Biology Thoughts podcast, my name is Saarim and I am your host for episode #1 called Darwin's Early Life. Today I will be discussing the early life, academia, and internal turmoil of English naturalist Charles Darwin, who is notable for his scientific theory of evolution by natural selection. We all know the name, Charles Darwin, and his idea that all living things developed and adapted overtime as a result of random mutations which gave these organisms traits suitable for their lifestyles. But how did he come up with this idea? The impacts of his theory are enormous as they really show us where all living things come from and the theory even created divisions in society amongst Darwinists/modernists and fundamentalists. But let's go all the way back to explore the origins of this theory. Segment 1: Introduction to Darwin's Early Life And AcademiaTalking about Darwin in Academia, his experiences in school, transition from medicine to religion, to naturalism and voyage on HMS Beagle, observations from trip/significance, and internal struggle deciding to publish work Credit New England Complex System Institute and Eric Guise's AP Biology videos for the following info Darwin Info Born in Shrewsbury, England; attended Shrewsbury School Interested in nature since young age - beetle collection Father wanted him to be doctor - went to Edinburg Medical School - found lectures boring and couldn't stand watching surgeries done without pain killers (left med school after 2 years) Father arranged from him to be priest/clergyman - earned bachelor of arts degree from Cambridge; continued interest in nature Became friends with two professors at Cambridge - geologist and John Henslow (botanist) Around the world sailing trip on HMS Beagle being arranged by Royal Navy - John Henslow recommended Darwin as the trips naturalist Darwin left for a 5 year journey - wrote down all his observations, etc.  Segment 2: Example of Darwin's Observation During His JourneyBrazil Visited tropical rainforest: great diversity - began thinking about diversity of life and the creation of different species Observed animals eating and chasing each other - animals struggled to survive Argentina Observed how the grass where the cattle grazed smaller than grass that cattle had been introduced with - idea of something allowing different types of grass to survive Tierra del Fuego Saw how well suited native were to their harsh environments https://www.cake.co/conversations/K2sNdvV/the-last-people-tierra-del-fuego-the-island-of-souls (https://www.cake.co/conversations/K2sNdvV/the-last-people-tierra-del-fuego-the-island-of-souls) Chile Rocks in the south were higher above sea level than the same rocks in north Earthquake: rocks had been lifted and marine organisms hgh up and dry - changes in environments = changes in organisms Galapagos Studied 3 main species: finches, tortoises, and the marine iguanas Finches Saw a different type of finch species with different types of beaks on each island depending on the conditions of the specific island - finches with strong beaks that ate large nuts (to open them); finches with beaks designed for just cracking small nuts; finches that ate fruits and insects had different beaks Darwin developed idea that birds from one species separated to different islands and adapted to new environments https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Darwin%27s_finches Tortoises Looked different - different neck sizes depending on the island - must have adapted to get food: long neck (higher vegetation); short neck (lower vegetation) https://www.mun.ca/biology/scarr/4270_Galapagos_tortoises.html Marine iguanas Lizards ability to swim was unique - adapted to survive on scarce food on the islands https://galapagosconservation.org.uk/wildlife/marine-iguana/ At this point, I will talk about his internal struggle he faced when deciding to publish his observations/theory Waited 23...
