Preussen was a marvel of a ship. A steel-hulled, five-masted, ship-rigged sailing ship built in 1902 and named after the German kingdom of Prussia.Until the launch of Royal Clipper in 2000, a sail cruise liner, Preussen was the only five-masted full-rigged ship ever built and carried six square sails on each mast. Not only did she have a fascinating career at a time when the sun was setting on the great clipper ships, she also had a fascinating and abrupt end in 1910, and ended up wrecked in the English Channel near Dover. Parts of her hull can still be seen today. To find out more Dr Sam Willis spoke with Frank Scott, a retired naval aviator and qualified square rig ship-master, who commanded various square riggers ranging from 80 to 800 gross tonnes. In his long sail training career Frank served in fourteen square riggers, under seven different national flags. This podcast goes alongside an animation of the Preussen's rigging plan which can be seen on the Mariner's Mirror Pod's YouTube Channel. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Ep 260 | Aired 9/3/2021 My guest today on Up In Your Business with Kerry McCoy is none other than the honorable Mayor of Little Rock, Arkansas, Mr. Frank Scott. His life demonstrates what I've seen time and time again on my show, and that is: “Successful people work hard, believe in a higher power, and are action oriented.” Mayor Scott has had a very diverse career. He has been an executive at First Security Bank, a staffer for Governor Mike Beebe, a manager for a Target distribution center, a state highway commissioner, and a board member of the LR Port Authority and Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Arkansas. Although his credentials are impressive, what endeared Mayor Scott to me was his open mindedness and willingness to try new things. As a youth, he was a Horace Mann Bear Cat football player who, later, was not afraid to take ballet. I'm SOLD! Oh, did I mention he is a Baptist associate pastor? This man can preach! After touching on his early life and career, the Mayor and I discuss the ins and outs of his renewed “Rebuild the Rock” campaign, aimed at revitalizing the City of Little Rock. Hear how he feels the proposed sales tax would improve early childhood care, create a senior center, revitalize our parks and recreation facilities, and improve infrastructure, all while learning some interesting facts about our fast-growing city, along the way.
Little Rock Mayor Frank Scott joins Justin and Wess in The Zone to talk about the latest going on with the city.

Brandon Marshall, Channing Crowder and Chad Johnson sit down Frank and Warrick Scott of the Wendell Scott family and discuss the legacy of Wendell Scott and his impact on NASCAR and his community. Starting off, Frank discusses the making of the 1977 film Greased Lighting that tells the story of his father and stock car racer Wendell Scott. Frank shares that the movie has several deleted scenes in efforts to reach a broader audience. Because of this, Frank believes that the movie doesn't depict the true Wendell Scott Story and he and his son Warrick vow to tell their father's uncut story to the world. Frank goes on to share a quote he father shared with him as a young boy “Just because I lose a race, doesn't mean that I'm defeated”. Frank shares that he has always wanted to be a boxer and he uses this quote to share with Ocho to encourage him to keep training and fighting. Channing prompts the question of the pressures of upholding the legacy and name of their father Wendell. Warrick responded that there isn't any pressure because he grew up in a “pressure cooker” experiencing and hearing the hardships that his grandfather endured while still being successful. He goes on to share that his life work is solely dedicated to liberating his grandfather's legacy. Warrick and Frank go on to share untold stories of Wendell Scott and the hardships he endured during the civil rights movement as his career began to blossom. They shared how he often feared for his life before and after races and how he navigated a sport that didn't embrace people who looked like him. Warrick and Frank share their father's dream and how the birth of the Wendell Scott Foundation came to life. Warrick lays out the purpose and goals of the foundation to advocate and broker for young black kids going to college. Frank gets emotional after seeing his father's vision being manifested through his son Warrick after over 50 years. On this episode of The Open Door, panelists Jim Hanink, Mario Ramos-Reyes, and Christopher Zehnder discuss the surprise popular series The Queen's Gambit and what it tells us about the corrosive Netflix effect. Our special guest is Josh Herring. His work has appeared on Public Discourse, the Imaginative Conservative, and The Federalist. He is Dean of Students at Thales Academy. Josh has a Master of Divinity degree and is a doctoral candidate at Faulkner University. We ask him the following questions.Could you tell us a bit about your background?Thales Academy, your academic home, offers a classical curriculum. What does this mean? What led you to write about The Queen's Gambit? Can you point out the differences between Frank Tevis's The Queen's Gambit : A Novel (1983) and Frank Scott's adaptation?Does The Queen's Gambit, if nothing else, succeed as tragedy?Resolved: Netflix is really just one player in a larger feedback loop designed to perpetuate a damaging message, much like a virus that replicates itself to infect others. What's your analysis?Decades ago Daniel Patrick Moynihan wrote about “defining deviancy down.” What factors contribute to this broad phenomenon? Is programmed deviancy likely to be creative?Personal responsibility presupposes moral agency. What sort of beings could have moral agency? What's your next writing project?

Skip Moyer is looking forward to sharing the Frank Scott Award moment with his kids. He played with Frank Scott a lot of times over the years. The award is all about a musician who has made a significant contribution to jazz in Berks County, as well as their active involvement in giving back to the community through music. Skip has been involved with Boscov’s Berks Jazz Fest since the beginning and he is still amazed that he is asked to play when all the big names are coming in to town to perform. He can’t imagine why people would choose to see him! Skip graduated from the Navy School of Music where he met a lot of great musicians. “Dennis … from Lehighton … ended up playing with Paul McCartney and the Wings … and Vaughn played bass trombone with the Woody Herman Band for years”. Skip says he got to play with a lot of great musicians in the Navy Band, “especially during peace time ... they are pretty picky about the musicians they choose”. Skip teaches locally. He is really happy this year because he has a student playing bass with the All County Jazz Band. Most years his students were the ones that played bass with the County Jazz Band. Skip says, “Last year was one of the years he didn’t have a student do it ... It’s because people that were actually qualified to play weren’t really interested in doing it. There are so many different kinds of music. Their pursuits were more toward the classical vein”. How do you teach jazz? Skip says, “It starts from how to hold the base, how to pull the string. Then you get into the harmony aspect … I usually teach how to play the blues first”. Skip wanted to play an instrument since he was 10. He bought an Oscar Peterson record but didn’t even own a turntable! He fondly recalls the local hillbilly parks and firemen’s carnivals where all the big names came to play including Bill Monroe, Webb Pierce, Bill Haley, Earl Scruggs and Minnie Pearl. They provided the inspiration and he really wanted to play steel guitar and dobro. His High School teacher urged him to play the Bass instead. That was the beginning of a lifetime making and sharing music.
Boscov’s Berks Jazz Fest mission: stage a ‘knock your socks off’ 10 day music festival, preserve and promote jazz music and education in the community. This hugely successful Fest is celebrating its’ 25th year. Before the Boscov’s Berks Jazz Fest there was Frank Scott. The Berks Arts Council in collaboration with Carolyn and Jerry Holleran established the Frank Scott Award to permanently recognize Scott’s musical and community contribution. Each year an honoree is named for their significant contribution to jazz and commitment to promoting music in the Berks County community. Who is Frank Scott? Tune in as Jerry Holleran and Toni Lynne, the 2006 Frank Scott award winner, introduce us to Frank Scott through their memories
Frank Scott sends a poem from the Spice Islands, Grenada.
Prof. Scott Bollens studies ethnicity and urban policy, development strategies, and regional and intergovernmental approaches to planning. Prof. Bollens' current book is City and Soul in Divided Societies. This book focuses on the historical, theoretical, and practical issues of urban divisions, but also uniquely provides a first-person account of conducting interview-based ethnography in these places of ethnic and nationalist polarization. The book puts forth facts, opinions, photographs, and observations in ways that bring to life the substantial challenges of living in, and governing, polarized and unsettled cities. http://socialecology.uci.edu/faculty/bollens
