Amy Schmittauer joins me to discuss why video is right now and discusses the new show, by Aftermarq, "Afterthoughts". What is Savvy Sexy Social? The mission of Savvy Sexy Social is to empower brands to embrace their amazing personality and share it with the world. By sharing desired content of your target market and becoming the go-to resource for customer, you’ll discover how to build brand advocacy and engaging relationships introduced and nurtured by social media in turn building your business. I’ve always loved the process of finding the perfect name for my creations (and pets). But I just got plain lucky with this one. When I wanted to create a resource that helps brands design a plan to effectively and relatably reach an activated and loyal audience, the words ‘savvy’, ‘sexy’, and ‘social’ truly described everything I knew I wanted to share. SAVVY — Understanding the purpose, context and optimal techniques of building brand awareness no matter if the tools are online or off. SEXY — Learning how to appeal to your audience online in a way that connects you to real people and makes happen or fits into relatable conversations. SOCIAL — Discovering amazing opportunities at your disposal that you have to connect with people by finding where they’re hanging out and how to best work your brand name into the conversation. All in all, this is a place where you can learn executable steps to discover your brand’s personality and market it across platforms in a fashion that works with the current trends of inviting conversations and telling stories. About Vincenzo Landino: Vincenzo is an entrepreneur, speaker and host of the Brand Boost Podcast. He is the the founder and Creative Director of Aftermarq, a video consultancy specializing in brand amplification and digital storytelling. Haters are not your problem. . . . Ignoring them is. Buy Jay's book here: http://amzn.to/1qyZ9Ib  Eighty percent of companies say they deliver outstanding customer service, but only 8 percent of their customers agree. This book will help you close that gap by reconfiguring your customer service to deliver knockout experiences. The near-universal adoption of smartphones and social media has fundamentally altered the science of complaints. Critics (“haters”) can now express their displeasure faster and more publicly than ever. These trends have resulted in an overall increase in complaints and a belief by many businesses that they have to “pick their spots” when choosing to answer criticisms. Bestselling author Jay Baer shows why that approach is a major mistake. Based on an extensive proprietary study of how, where, and why we complain, Hug Your Haters proves that there are two types of complainers, each with very different motivations:   ·Offstage haters. These people simply want solutions to their problems. They complain via legacy channels where the likelihood of a response is highest—phone, e-mail, and company websites. Offstage haters don’t care if anyone else finds out, as long as they get answers. ·Onstage haters. These people are often disappointed by a substandard interaction via traditional channels, so they turn to indirect venues, such as social media, online review sites, and discussion boards. Onstage haters want more than solutions—they want an audience to share their righteous indignation. Hug Your Haters shows exactly how to deal with both groups, drawing on meticulously researched case studies from businesses of all types and sizes from around the world. It includes specific playbooks and formulas as well as a fold-out poster of “the Hatrix,” which summarizes the best strategies for different situations. The book is also filled with poignant and hilarious examples of haters gone wild, and companies gone crazy, as well as inspirational stories of companies responding with speed, compassion, and humanity. Whether you work for a mom-and-pop store or a global brand, you will have haters—and you can’t afford to ignore them. Baer’s insights and tactics will teach you how to embrace complaints, put haters to work for you, and turn bad news into good outcomes. Who is Savvy Sexy Social? Today, I have something very, very different. As you know, I usually don’t do interviews, but when I find something that’s this true gem that I feel that people can really truly benefit from, I think this is something really special that people need to hear. Particularly in this case, because most people looking to either augment, increase, or change their career want to know how they can enter. Amy Schmittauer discusses how to develop your authority in the world of social media. A person I have today, Amy Schmittauer, is the curator and developer of Savvy Sexy Social, which is video blogging, also Social Authority. Social Authority gets beyond the blogging, beyond the video, into the rest of the social media world, and how that fits in. Amy, welcome. Amy: Hello, Thomas. How are you? Thomas: I’m doing great. Thanks a lot. Amy: Of course. Thomas: Thank you for sharing your info with us today. Amy: I am so thrilled to be an exception for your show; it just means so much to me. Thomas: I’m glad you’re able to contribute, because I’m sure they can benefit. Give us a little bit of a background. Let’s say somebody all of a sudden hits 48 years of age, they’re taking a look, and they’re saying: “Gee, I don’t know whether I’m going to be around in this job or this career. What might I do to start getting out into another business or career?” How might they use social media? Amy: First and foremost, it’s like the step before social, digital, and the internet. When you’re already going through this mindset shift and you’re not quite sure how to approach it, there’s a lot of barriers in your mind already. The first thing I would recommend is just really think about what you know very, very well, and what your time so far has offered you to become really, really, really smart on. What I find is a lot of people that even want help from me, they could have a very, very clear path or a goal set, but then a lot of other times, there are people that just come and say: “Oh, I hear this social media thing is hot. Can I start a business there? How am I going to monetize my blog?” These sort of questions are frustrating for me, because I would rather hear: What do you have to offer the world that you do better than anyone else? Because that is going to be very important. The product has to be awesome. Then let’s talk about how we’re going to show off your amazing personality so that people will even care about that awesome product. I think first and foremost, you have to understand what value you bring to the world. You need to think about that first, because before you go and get distracted by all of this ADD society of social media, like YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter – you really need to be very clear about that value proposition, and: Who’s even going to care about it? Who is that perfect follower, end user, customer, potential advocate for you? These are the really important questions before you can start tweeting. Thomas: That’s interesting. One of the things I find there, and for a lot of people, I’m always hearing: “Passion. Follow your passion. Go in this…” That, well as you may remember, I have an episode, “Passion Sucks …. the Life Out of You.” You have to pick something that really is, as you just said, marketable, something that people really want. It can be there. In many cases, it can be a hobby or something you do. Amy: Sure. Thomas: At the same time, what you’re saying, you have to really have value. While you have it as a hobby, you then also have to make sure that you master it or become an expert at it. Amy: Absolutely, because I think a hobby that is just to please you is one thing, and I know that that could be totally satisfactory, but I think when you go to a place like social media, which is essentially these built-in cocktail parties where you’re going and you’re meeting people who are already talking, already having conversations,

Welcome back to the Expert edition of the Q&A with S&J and today we are bringing back one of our favorite guests to talk about video and how it can improve your brand. It is Amy Schmittauer; Amy, welcome back to the Q&A with S&J. AMY: Shane and Jocelyn are my favorite people in the world, thanks for having me. SHANE: Love it. JOCELYN: Yeah, we are like super pumped when we talked to Amy a little bit ago that she is in the Eastern Time zone. There are very few people in the Eastern Time Zone. SHANE: This is the only podcast we get to record in the Eastern Time zone is when we get to talk to Amy. AMY: It's so funny because most people don't even believe me when I say I'm in the Eastern Time zone – SHANE: I know. AMY: – they're like, “You're in Ohio, so what does that mean?” SHANE: “Do you even have internet?” AMY: “Is that central time?” I'm like, “Yeah, exactly. I'm on Eastern Time, it's all good.” SHANE: I always say, we have to like plus or minus four from everything we do because of all the people in California. AMY: Oh no. JOCELYN: East Coast represent – SHANE: East Coast is in the house today. JOCELYN: Let's jump into today's question. It's from Cathy, a Flip Your Life member, and she says, “I cannot afford expensive equipment to make videos; what should I do?” SHANE: If we get any video questions, it's this one because you know, when people start out affordability on everything, you got to get hosting and domains and blah-blah-blah and you got to spend some money to get started. But then we're like “Okay, how are you going to use video?” And they're like, “I can't afford a camera.” That's impossible. So what do you say to people when they come to you and they are like “I don't have anything to record with; what do I do?” AMY: Well, it's a bunch of crap, is what it is because you do have something to record with – Cathy, no disrespect. So, most of us have a smartphone and there's no reason to think that if you are going to get serious about video content that you can't use what you already have. I mean, it's actually sort of mind-blowing when you think about the abilities of the cameras that are built into smartphones. This is why the flip camera got discontinued and there are so many other hand-held video cameras nobody is buying because you just have it in something you carry around anyway. So, other than maybe a memory issue, there's no reason for you to say like “I can't use my phone” and there's so many accessories out there to enhance even that product alone if you are worried about internal audio being an issue ‘cause you like to do stuff outside a lot. There's a way of getting a microphone that can just plug into your phone and then you automatically have an upgrade there. So, often times when people are trying to sort of drag their feet on video, they are always talking about equipment and it's just very hard to wrap your mind on what are all the things we need: lighting, sound, quality everything; but if you just start with what you have at that point in time, you are going to prove to yourself that you need better...

SHANE: That's right, organic. Everything is organic right here. AMY: Totally. SHANE: Really we just have no time to prep but that's beside the point. All right Jocelyn, let's go with today's question. JOCELYN: All right, today's question is from Brad, one of our Flip Your Life members, and Brad says, “How long should my videos be? All the videos I watch on YouTube seem to be long, but a lot of experts say you should keep it short. Which one is it and what works best?” SHANE: This is very confusing because – it is true, when I read this question, I was like you know, that's true; seems like I'm always trying to learn something that's like 20-minute videos. But then I always hear, “Three to five minutes, get it out there and get it quick” kinda deal. So what do you think about that? AMY: Well it's funny – Brad, really, really good question because that's absolutely right. We are constantly kind of fielding the search results to find the video that's going to be best for us in that moment and no one is saying, “Man, I really hope I find a solid 25-minute video on this.” SHANE: That's right. AMY: No one is doing that. Now, it depends on the situation, it depends on the content; I mean, if it's an intense tutorial, then maybe you do need every minute of that. But I tend to tell people, you know, if you're creating informational content on YouTube, you really want to be between two and five minutes. If you think about the fact that you can inject so much copy into your headline, your description, your tags and you can rank really well for something; but if you end up on the results page with a video that's seven minutes and yours is twenty, and you're supposed to be accomplishing the same thing in that amount of time, you're just not gonna be the option that people choose. So it's really sort of a human SEO factor that I like to talk about is you can tell YouTube how to rank you, but according to the human that sees you when sea...

Does it matter  where you host your media if it's an actual media host? What is Amy Schmittaur behind the camera? What kind of downloads can I expect from my first pdocast episode? If my show is really bad, what can I expect? All of these questions are answered in today's School of Podcasting's Morning Announcements episode 453. Dave's Thoughts on Spreaker Colin from Canada asks, "What are your thoughts on Spreaker? Is it too crowded, what do you think of their sound quality?" I've spoken about podcast media hosts in the past, and a few years ago I was not a huge fan of Spreaker. I was contacted by the head of Spreaker, we got on Skype and since then they have continued to add more and more features to their platform. They use to rename your file, tweak your ID3 tags, and there was no way to redirect your feed. Those objections have been solved. Do I have any objections to Spreaker now? Only one (and it's a small one). Both Libsyn.com and Blubrry.com have the ability to have an unlimited back catalog. Spreaker allows you to have a HUGE back catalog, but in the end, there IS a limit (510 hours - thats a lot of episodes - for $20 a month). Your Host Won't Get Your More Listeners So many people thought that having their podcast on SoundCloud would bring them more audience (in my circles it brought in an additional 3%). While Spreaker does have a thriving community, in the end don't look to your media host to bring you an audience - you need to do that on your own. What Kind of Numbers Does a New Podcast Get? Last week I released an experiment of mind call Podcasting For Free. Episode 4 got 33 downloads in a week. Another experiment I did was trying to make the absolutely worst podcast. I think I succeeded as the first episode released in 2013 still only has 8 downloads. Downloads will always be based on your topic, genre, and background. We have tools to help you shape your content at the School of Podcasting. Amy Schmittauer Jumps Into the Podcasting Pool (With No Makeup) Amy Schmittaur is the force behind Savvy Social Sexy. I found Amy on YouTube and I love her sarcasm, and her content. For me, that's an unbeatable combination. In today's interview we discover: 1. Amy is actually shy when the camera is turned off 2. People give you 8 seconds on YouTube to make your first impression 3. In the end, you have to do the work. You have to at least try. 4. Amy is out on her Sexy Savvy Social LIVE tour (see info). 5. The things Amy can do in a podcast that she can't do in a YouTube video. Here is Amy explaining the name of her brand. It makes me laugh every time I watch it (#imjustsayin') https://youtu.be/_oDGxqzO2z8 School of Podcasting Members and Affiliates If you are a members of the School of Podcasting and School of Podcasting Affiliates we have MOVED platforms (I am now using Value Addon for my membership site). http://Relaunchshow.com/174 By her own admission, she had the perfect job, for the plan she had at the time. She  went from a secretarial position, at a prestigious law firm in Ohio, to a key team player for political events and fundraising campaigns. And, while her career was going  well, she realized that is was a fast-track to the "safe route", but not where she wanted to be. While leaving her firm was difficult, she knew it was time. "I knew I needed to go out on my own, because it just felt right. I was either going to sink or float and I needed to know which one ASAP, so I could move on to plan B, if needed. But, I haven’t needed it yet."
