Adventure through the Bible Podcast

What is prayer? What does Scripture say about prayer and the necessity of prayer? Why is it important? In this episode, Niko joins the podcast to talk about prayer and how it's been a part of his life as he's followed Jesus! Scripture from the Podcast: "Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." Philippians 4:6-7 (ESV) Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. Pray then like this: “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil." Matthew 6:8-14 (ESV) Jesus said to her, “Did I not tell you that if you believed you would see the glory of God?” So they took away the stone. And Jesus lifted up his eyes and said, “Father, I thank you that you have heard me. I knew that you always hear me, but I said this on account of the people standing around, that they may believe that you sent me.” When he had said these things, he cried out with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out.” John 11:40-43 (ESV) For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. Note from Megan Chapa: Today is the first of an exciting series of guest hosted episodes you will get to experience. My past guests have volunteered to create content for me so that I can make a transatlantic move this late summer/early fall. Content will focus on many drivable destinations in the US. I hope you will enjoy this series as my guests truly know travel well. They have all also made themselves available to you for questions or assistance planning your own trips. Feel free to tell them how well they did. https://assets.fireside.fm/file/fireside-images/podcasts/images/0/037e01ef-c3bb-4048-9bb2-f57e8e9144e2/hosts/d/d4365d1d-3082-48ef-a6c0-86593675d0f9/avatar_small.jpg Redmon Wines, St. Helena: Road Trip Gems of Napa Valley, California https://static.wixstatic.com/media/cf7b00_aac89d07197f4ef49687921649e708cb~mv2.gif Today’s episode features Trave Radio’s first guest host Matthew Wahlgren. Matt is a regular guest of Travel Radio Podcast but has taken over the show as host this week! He is taking us to one of his favorite California road trip destinations and I love it. Napa Valley is just the place to escape lockdown this summer. Escape with us this week (at least your ears can) to boutique vineyards in St. Helena and delightful dining locations. This is Napa Valley. Napa Valley is opening up to tourists and businesses are excited to have visitors return! If Italy was on your radar for summer 2020 and you had to cancel your trip Napa Valley is an excellent alternative. Lisa Redmon, is a 50 year local to the Napa Valley and a producer of Napa Valley wine for the past 15 years. The Redmon family is always pouring something! Originally, it was just pouring rootbeer at the family’s A & W Rootbeer restaurant in St. Helena, Napa. Then, the A & W's were incredibly successful and this allowed the Redmons to purchase other real estate in St. Helena to include a vineyard. Self taught and perfected, Lisa now pours her own award winning Napa Valley wines. https://static.wixstatic.com/media/cf7b00_6e765aa82b3348e989e6c687b0dd4cdb~mv2_d_1512_2016_s_2.jpg/v1/fill/w_998,h_1340,al_c,q_85,usm_0.66_1.00_0.01/cf7b00_6e765aa82b3348e989e6c687b0dd4cdb~mv2_d_1512_2016_s_2.jpg Starting with a home wine making kit Lisa used her family’s grapes to create her first wine. Taking her creation to the Napa Valley Fair her wines won Best of Show and Best Cabernet. With this confirmation, that combining Redmon Family grapes and her creativity makes for excellent wine, Lisa set out to create the Redmon Wines brand. Lisa produced the first vintage of Redmon Wine’s in 2001. Production has grown from 25 cases per year to now over 1500 cases per year. Redmon Wines are made from 5 different varietals grown on 50 year old vines. The trick to getting your hands on some of this Napa Valley liquid gold is to visit the vineyard on Redmon Ranch. At the vineyard you will join Lisa in the little farmhouse for a tasting and history of the estate vines. Afterward you will have the opportunity to purchase some of this much coveted and hard to get wine! https://static.wixstatic.com/media/cf7b00_41fe6cbc7e6843ecbf36402ff3ca383b~mv2.jpg/v1/fill/w_931,h_1280,al_c,q_90/cf7b00_41fe6cbc7e6843ecbf36402ff3ca383b~mv2.jpg Lisa Redmon also spills the beans (let’s say grapes…) on her favorite local shops and places to dine in St. Helena. This includes a Napa Valley Olive Oil Company housed in an old barn that mirrors the family’s original property in Italy. You know you are at the right place when you see the American Flag and the Italian Flag flying from the barn's side windows. The inside walls are papered with business cards from the day the business opened. The food goods available are a hobbit’s dream. Locally made olive oil, balsamic vinegar, salami, cheeses and other picnic items. It is a delightful trip back in time and perfectly pairs with wine tasting experiences. Foodies will love a trip to Napa Valley. Eat like a local with these tips from Lisa Redmon including recommendation not listed on the menu! ~ Firstly a little bakery in St. Helena will start your morning right and they are famos for their English muffins. ~ The Cliff Family Winery, Main Street St. Helena, hosts a gourmet Italian- style flat bed food truck. Guests can take their flat bread outback and enjoy a wine tasting or purchase wine by the glass. ~ Gottt’s Roadside is a gourmet drive in and offers an excellent menu like fish tacos, burgers, brussel sprouts and street corn. Kids will enjoy their milkshakes! (Tip call your order in if the line is overwhelming.). The back also has an enclosed area with picnic tables that is perfect for kids to run around in. ~ An upscale option right outside St. Helen is Brasswood, in the old outlet section. A secret item menu is the pulled mozzarella. The cocktails are delicious and creative! There are lots of shops and bakeries around to enjoy. ~ Lisa’s favorite view is the Auberge du Soleil. One side of the deck is their Michelin Rated Restraint 13 times in a row. The other side of the deck is a bar menu and cocktail bar. Make sure to make a reservation! ~ Goose and Gander is up and coming and will have a creative menu with a great chef and amazing bar! The upstairs is a nice patio are complete with a Koi Pond for a fantastic dining experience. The lower portion is a an English Pub style dining area with a fire place and big leather chair. They serve and excellent Duck Fries. Cocktails are beautiful with edible flower and cucumbers on the side of the glasses. Plus, they are delicious! https://shop.redmonwines.com/assets/images/products/originals/Appellation%20Collection1%2Ejpg For transportation hire a local! Knowing the area can make or break your trip. There are several options to include driver that own their own cars or drivers that can be hired by the hour to drive your car. Either way, don’t drive drunk, do arrive at your appointments on time. Hire a driver that knows the back roads and can make additional recommendations as needed. Accommodations in Napa Valley will vary from large luxury resorts to cottage style bed and breakfasts. Downtown Napa and St. Helena offer additional hotel options which are great for walking into town for night time dining or activities. Bashfully, and I set him up for this, Matt asks Lisa about wine stomping. Wine stomping is a real thing! It happens during harvest time. The main winery where wine stomping can be found is Girgich Hill. Guests can stomp out a half or whole barrel. (Megan interjecting here… I’ve done this in a different location, this is fun and a fantastic work out…) The most popular time of year to visit Napa Valley is during the grape harvest. This is also when the crowds come; typically in the months of September to October. Napa Guests will see the wine being produced and even trucks driving through the valley with grapes in the back. Lisa’s trick is to visiting Napa Valley is to come in the last week of October. The fall colors are still on the vines but the tourist traffic has slowed down dramatically. The Spring is a gorgeous time where the entire valley is lovely light green. February is “mustard season” when the vines are all golden. Napa Valley in the winter is less visually stimulating when the vines are dormant. HOWEVER, Napa Valley tourists are all dormant and you will receive fantastic attention from the wine makers you visit! Are you interested in planning a trip through Napa Valley but don’t have time? Matthew Wahlgren has several itineraries he plans for his guests to St. Helena and other regional destinations. In addition to Napa Valley itineraries Matt plans fully customized vacations. Matt’s contact information can be found here (https://www.travelradioonline.com/hosts/mattw). Lisa Redmon’s bio and contact information can be found here. Wine Tourism in Oporto and Northern Portugal Confession Time: There is always Portuguese wine on our table with dinner! It is also sometimes in our glasses other times of the day too! Portuguese wines are one of the greatest discoveries my husband and I learned about living in the UK. Recording this episode was no chore for me as we are already eyeing this destination for ourselves. https://files.fireside.fm/file/fireside-uploads/images/0/037e01ef-c3bb-4048-9bb2-f57e8e9144e2/IcIqyjWI.jpeg Why aren’t Portuguese wines packing the shelves of US wine and liquor stores? My guest Miguel Lael, talks about the culture of blending in Portugal. US drinkers want to know what grape is in the bottle. However, blending is the tradition of Portuguese wines. Miguel says sometimes the growers aren’t even sure what they are growing. We decide that a bottle of wine form Portugal is a grape party inside the bottle! https://www.ml-privatetours.com/templates/yootheme/cache/douro-valley-353a546e.jpeg As Independence Day approaches in the US I reflect on the US and Portugal’s shared tradition of Madeira wine. Miguel shares some history on the accidental discovery of Madeira and how to pair it. However, this ends in him just laughing and exclaiming that, “The only really rule to drinking Portuguese wines is that there are no rules.” You drink them how you decide you like them! Why not watch the video interview? It’s hard to say if Miguel Lael or his guests have more fun during one of his tours. You will get this sense immediately from our conversation this week on Travel Radio Podcast. Private and limited to 7 people you will enjoy a fully customized wine and olive oil experience.

In order to give prospective clients an idea of what it’s like to hire Miguel we play a game of, “Let’s Plan It”. I pick up my pretend phone and call him up on his 24/7 direct line. In the end I confirm, touring the Douro Valley is a dream trip I want to take. Hiring a jovial and likable guide is critical to making the experience take root in your heart. Miguel would be my choice. If you enjoyed this audio episode, why not watch the video too? We will explore Miguel’s own photographs of the region he lives, and loves to work in.

Thank you for as always for sharing in this audio adventure with us! Shortly before the start of WWII Matty's grandparents fled Poland to the safety of America. His grandmother then joined the US Army, returning to Poland to fight on the side of the Allies. Matty initially visiting Poland with an old flame he fell in love - with Poland, not the gal! https://media-exp1.licdn.com/dms/image/C4E03AQHm83AZTZsUpQ/profile-displayphoto-shrink_800_800/0?e=1597276800&v=beta&t=l8GvhonXGxgS4gfJVbodHMEJ2CxWU9n47tByE8nHlP0 Since that first trip he has returned to Poland two more times. The beauty, culture and history draw him back again and again. He tells listeners the old town square and food will, "BLOW YOU AWAY". https://files.fireside.fm/file/fireside-uploads/images/0/037e01ef-c3bb-4048-9bb2-f57e8e9144e2/IVMIi6mp.jpg Photo by Stephen Doyne on Unsplash Matty finds that Poland is often a forgotten destination in Europe but readily suggests it to his clients as a choice destination for value, world history and friendly locals. In Krakow, Matty finds the locals love Americans. They speak English well and are ready to welcome you as their long lost cousin. https://files.fireside.fm/file/fireside-uploads/images/0/037e01ef-c3bb-4048-9bb2-f57e8e9144e2/Ftz2lmVR.jpg Photo by William Warby on Unsplash We dig into Auschwitz and the emotional reactions he had upon visiting for the first time. How young is too young to take children to the concentration camp? What other day trips are options from Krakow? Matty puts Wawel Castle, the incredible salt mines and river cruising! (At this point Polish language speakers will cringe as we destroy pronunciations. I promise we make our errors with excitement and enthusiasm for your country! Want to correct us? Send an email to info@travelradiopodcast.com.) https://files.fireside.fm/file/fireside-uploads/images/0/037e01ef-c3bb-4048-9bb2-f57e8e9144e2/VDiFOsHQ.jpg Photo by Jacek Dylag on Unsplash Food is the highlight of every trip for me. Matty also experiences travel the same way. He describes some of his favorite dishes and one to avoid. I inquire about perogies and Matty assures me they are everywhere and filled with everything amazing! As you may have guessed from the intro - the Vodka is top notch! Enjoy this episode of Travel Radio Podcast on Krakow, Poland. I was not able to make my trip to Poland due to travel restrictions. This episode really helped me dream the dream of traveling to Poland when the time is right. Thank you Matty K for allowing me to interview you on Krakow, Poland. Matty: Krakow, Poland Megan: How many times have you been to Poland? Matty: Megan: Why do you suggest Poland to your clients? Matty: (I’m thinking value, rich culture, etc) Megan: A lot of travelers, and travel agents, don’t like to visit the same destination twice. You’ve gone three times. Can you share a story about how Poland made its way into your heart and a destination you go back to again and again? Matty: Megan: Is there something funny/surprising for you when you first visited Krakow? Matty: Megan: Did you experience anything in Krakow that made you feel small or really spark awe inside you? Matty: Megan: As with most European countries, developed for thousands of years, we can’t get to all of Poland today. We’ve decided to start in Krakow and use this as a base for exploring the region. When you think of Krakow what is the first thing that stands out to you? Matty: Megan: What are some other attractions or activities that will help clients immerse and begin to understand the city and culture of the locals? Matty: Megan: What are some day trip options from Krakow people might take? Matty: Megan: Something I’m excited to talk about is Polish cuisine. What is your favorite Polish dish? Matty: Megan: Was there a dish you did not enjoy and give travelers a head’s up about? Matty: Megan: I want to take just a few minutes before we close out to cover traveling necessities in Krakow. What language skills to people need in Krakow? Matty: Megan: How should travelers expect to handle money? Matty: Megan: Did you have any personal safety concerns? - Bosses who notice an employee's performance drop in one aspect of the job shouldn't immediately think the employee is slacking off. A study led by a University of Toronto professor discovered that in many cases the employee has just shifted and refocused his efforts on a different set of tasks, which should be considered a positive sign of adaptability. - Research suggests a surprising advantage to dressing up for the workday. Wearing more formal clothing changes the way that people think, helping them to focus on the big picture. The study (Columbia University and California State University, Northridge) found that wearing formal clothing leads to more big-picture thinking, rather than concrete thinking that focuses on the details. - You may want to sit down for this, but a study proved the impossible: children eat more vegetables when they're sweetened with sugar. The researchers (University of Connecticut) think this is just fine if sugar is used as a tool to get the kids eating vegetables in the first place. Once that's achieved, sugar can be left out of the meal WACKY-BUT-TRUE: MAN CAUGHT CAMPING ON DISNEY'S DISCOVERY ISLAND _ A Florida man is facing trespassing charges after security found him camping on Walt Disney World's Discovery Island. After receiving a call deputies searched for 42-year-old Richard McGuire on foot, by helicopter, and by boat before finally making contact with him. According to an arrest report, McGuire told deputies he'd planned to stay for about a week. … Discovery Island, which was a zoological attraction before Disney's Animal Kingdom park opened, has been closed since 1999. All of Disney's Orlando-area theme parks are also currently closed due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. WACKY-BUT-TRUE: CAR STOLEN BUT RETURNED WITH ADDITIONAL GAS _ A car vanished from a Wisconsin home, and just hours later it turned up — filled with gas. WACKY-BUT-TRUE: FRENCHMAN GOES TO PRISON OVER SOAP _ A guy in France traveled to Spain to pick up a load of 2,850 bars of soap from a factory. Shortly after the pickup, he was pulled over. Police demanded to know what the cargo was. Soap, the man replied. But a test showed it was cocaine and the man was arrested. But a lab test later confirmed it really was soap, not cocaine. The man demanded compensation for the wrongful arrest and the resulting 70 days of incarceration. All he got from Spain was $129 per day, the “standard rate” it offers for wrongful imprisonment. WACKY-BUT-TRUE: DINGBAT DRUNK TRIES TO REVIVE DINGHY _ A man in France called emergency services requesting an ambulance to be sent to the shipyards, where he was attempting to resuscitate a victim. When police officers arrived, the extremely drunk 22-year-old man told them the victim was not responding, and he had been administering CPR to revive him. Police then noticed the drunk man was underneath a boat, on his knees, trying to resuscitate a rubber life raft. WACKY-BUT-TRUE: HIGH-SPEED TOW _ In Germany a man offered assistance to a guy whose car had broken down on the side of the highway. The man offered to attach a tow rope to the other guy's car to get him to a service station. Sounds like a pretty nice offer. The German guy then proceeded to zip down the highway at up to 100 miles per hour. The guy being towed was trapped in his towed car, and all he could do is flash his lights and honk his horn. Eventually he caught the attention of other drivers, who called police, who forced the tow guy to slow down. This episode earns a rating of DD. That is, "Dynamic Duo", "Determined Dames" or simply "Dina and Dee"! These two ladies joined the podcast to offer insights, suggestions and encouragement for persons who travel or want to travel with their autistic children. I hope these ladies are two new resources for you. All resources mentioned are below in the show notes! This episode is also for the rest of us who don't travel or live with autistic persons. We too will engage with them and need a little insight on how to be supportive. My hopes are that these conversations can give us a glimpse into a caregiver's experience. https://static.wixstatic.com/media/0e4cf0_312343967985428fbf3afb655ad6d98a~mv2.png/v1/fill/w_236,h_230,al_c,usm_0.66_1.00_0.01/182a1a_edited.png Today we ask the question, "Where can I travel with my autistic child?". Spoiler alert - IT'S EVERYWHERE! Dina Farmer, Certified Autism Travel Professional (CATP), is positive you can fullfill your family's travel dreams and bring your autistic child with you. She travels frequently with her own autistic child. Enabling him to travel and thrive in new environments motivated her to get her CATP certification. The autism community is underserved and Dina is committed to guiding families in the travel planning process. In addition to working with these families Dina offers travel planning to families with other medical needs such as diabetes. She really offers some great tips and resources to keep things smooth, uneventful and enjoyable for these types of travelers. More and more the travel industry is making step to be inclusive and Dee is keeping tabs! http://static1.squarespace.com/static/57c0394d29687fe4f8e30a9f/t/5e831f3c8cfb0e4f12eb5266/1586880636358/?format=230w I asked Dee Nix, Autism Champions, to help guide me in a conversation about encountering public autism meltdowns and how we should react. Should I look away? Engage? Smile? Our conversation was candid and really helped me personally build a mental checklist of how I might offer support to a family in need. We also discussed airports with designated low stimulations zones and airline employee trainings. Dee offers some suggestions on how airlines might train employees better in the future. A recurring theme between both interviews is that, "What works in your home, will work while traveling..." Take your fiddle toys and ear muffs. We get it and support it. Secondly, as an observe, don't judge the situation. Don't throw a shady glance or comment. Just know that you don't know the whole story. The other piece of advice both guests mentioned, one in practice and one in guidance - tell staff upfront. No matter where you are going, airline, amusement park, etc, tell them. They might have resources already in place for you! Comments, additional resources? Feel free to share and contact Dina and Dee. Their pictures are at the top of this article and you can find all their contact details under their guest profiles. Hello Traveler, I hope you enjoyed this episode of Travel Radio Pocast. We will see Notre Dame in a way that has never before been seen. Hopefully, we will never see her in this state of disrepair again. Tonight we have VIP seats to a concert held in the Saint Chapelle. This royal chapel was built by King Louis IX to house his collection of Passion relics, including Christ's Crown of Thorns. Within the most extensive 13th-century stained glass collections anywhere in the world, the acoustics during our concert will be beyond compare! Day 5: Four Buck-list Destinations Today we will go up the Arc de Triomphe. This monument is at the centre of possibly the craziest roundabouts in all of Europe. We will go up to the top for a spectacular view of Les Champs Elysées and to watch the 8 lanes of traffic circling us from below. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5beaf96012b13fc706ceaaf2/1570707957878-67AO80Z9O3FX8UVHW7WD/ke17ZwdGBToddI8pDm48kFQQgP34qnCpeHaeAOzTt7pZw-zPPgdn4jUwVcJE1ZvWQUxwkmyExglNqGp0IvTJZamWLI2zvYWH8K3-s_4yszcp2ryTI0HqTOaaUohrI8PIedjZT6_OBzi2ofH1EqNdNeCRxNMlbxs9807lIebBlcA/Arc+de+Triomphe.png?format=1500w From here we will stroll Les Champs Elysées, Place de la Concorde and have lunch at Dame de Pic. This is one of many restaurants belonging to Anne Sophie Pic. She is the fourth woman to ever receive 3 Michelin stars. Michelin stars is something well known in her family as her father also had 3 stars and her grandfather received 3 stars in 1934. Then it’s time to discover the mythical sites and secret spaces of the Palais Garnier: the Bassin de la Pythie, the Grand Stairway and the Foyer de la Danse. This is the setting and inspiration of The Phantom of the Opera and we have a private tour of the building and backstage. We will regroup for dinner at the foot of the Eiffel Tower and once the sun has set we will set off for a cruise on the Seine and you will see for yourself why this spectacular city is called The City of Lights. _“If you are lucky enough to have lived in Paris as a young man, then wherever you go for the rest of your life it stays with you, for Paris is a moveable feast.” – Ernest Hemingway Day 6: Secret Gardens, Sipping, and Succulent Feasts The fashionable Marais district is where we will be exploring today. Here we will visit a few different secret gardens. The Place des Vosges is the oldest planned square in Paris. The surrounding buildings, house shops, galleries, restaurants and, most notably, the Maison de Victor Hugo, where the author lived and wrote for many years. We will visit the small museum to see mementos from Hugo’s childhood as well as the rooms where he wrote Les Miserables. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5beaf96012b13fc706ceaaf2/1581688388930-20ARRNY5M66C9299XSJB/ke17ZwdGBToddI8pDm48kJK4Mm1kch8SFO9ZNkN1NT97gQa3H78H3Y0txjaiv_0fDoOvxcdMmMKkDsyUqMSsMWxHk725yiiHCCLfrh8O1z5QHyNOqBUUEtDDsRWrJLTmN9YSRtfoTLg6dUq-6F17A0FFZK5fArcnK1IqGweyunyWChwIwkIJ_P7MaZif-uMs/ibrik.png?format=1500w Not far from here is the Jardin Anne Frank, where a sapling of the chestnut tree she always spoke about was planted in 2009. To get us ready for dinner, we have a private room in Louis XVs cellars with our very own sommelier. In this stunning private room we will learn about wine, while sampling a selection of delicious wines (and food). Can you think of a better apéritif? Keeping the theme of privacy, we will end the day in our own private restaurant. With its open kitchen, we will be able to see the chef create, possibly learn a few tips and definitely some cooking inspiration. Day 7: Eiffel Tower, Art and Food Finale! Today we will meet and eat at the Eiffel Tower. We saved the best for last as we will be treated to chef Frédéric Anton, awarded Meilleur Ouvrier de France, he has said he has just one wish: to run a luxurious Jules Verne with an expert hand offering an unbeatable gastronomic experience and so fill the heart of the mythical Iron Lady. After taking in the sites from the top of the tower, we will immerse ourselves in art at Atelier Lumière. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5beaf96012b13fc706ceaaf2/1581952319324-69FPF3UB3Q5VDAG7PU42/ke17ZwdGBToddI8pDm48kEh7ITbM-vCwc1BZu6ssEPFZw-zPPgdn4jUwVcJE1ZvWQUxwkmyExglNqGp0IvTJZamWLI2zvYWH8K3-s_4yszcp2ryTI0HqTOaaUohrI8PI_Kopnc7afHugqTGv5bee5VIijSdyIGEpctAKY2D-k9cKMshLAGzx4R3EDFOm1kBS/Jules%2BVerne.jpg?format=1500w This is an art experience you will never forget. Nashville, Music City Insider Tips! https://static1.squarespace.com/static/5b4f623e36099b149c9e6b0c/t/5b53fec003ce640bec7bc3f9/1584052790620/?format=1500w As Director of the Contemporary Music Center in Nashiville, Warren Pettit, knows musicians and venues inside and out. More importantly, he has low tolerance for mediocrity of the same. If you are lucky enough to be selected, for one of just 30 places each college semester, beware! He will ruin your tolerance for sub-par music and lack-luster venues. More over, he will push you to develop your craft so that too you can contribute gloriously to the marvel that is "Music City". Described as an "Edutainer" his students love him and so will you. This is why Warren Pettit is the perfect guest to talk "Insider Nashville". Warren's critical ear and eye for musical craftsmanship, sound production and savvy business skills uniquely suit him for his roll as Director at the Contemporary Music Center. Surrounding himself with staff comprised of industry pros of the same standard, that love young persons, allows the program to thrive - even distance learning through Covid-19. It should be noted that while the staff of the CMC work to pull excellence out of each student, and the standards are high, Warren and the staff are beloved by the students. https://media-exp1.licdn.com/dms/image/C4E03AQGHWGfOPBBPYg/profile-displayphoto-shrink_800_800/0?e=1590624000&v=beta&t=qfbPUFha-m89wKEYUQLr7Ac_IHsdGp0eqWpEE0yaQ0w I proposed Warren tell listeners his top 3- 10 venues for enjoying music in Nashville. His answers were some of the things I would expect, and that populate easily in a google search for the BIG VENUES. And that's great - it confirms their excellence. "If you swing a cat you are going to hit a venue that has live music..." Of more interest to me were Warren's "B List" level venues. These are the smaller venues with impeccable players and intimate settings. Rumor has it there are apple pies served at one of them too! Most notably listed are the venues of 3rd and Lindsley (https://www.3rdandlindsley.com) and the Blue Bird Cafe (https://bluebirdcafe.com). https://files.fireside.fm/file/fireside-uploads/images/0/037e01ef-c3bb-4048-9bb2-f57e8e9144e2/Kw93nkGs.jpg "...If you are a tourist... Here's the good news. Everyone is in the industry and after work - nobody goes to shows..." His last suggestion painted such a visual and audible picture for me I had to google it. Simply, walk mid-day, down South Broadstreet. Warren has promised a musical experience of epic proportions that will proverbially "blow your mind". He estimates that there are around 68 Honky Tonk bars full of session players, road musicians and the likes just cranking out music all the live long day through the early hours of the night. Keep in mind, this experience cost you nothing. So, purposely walk up to one of the bands tip jar and bless them with a few "thank you" bucks. https://static.wixstatic.com/media/88a28e_80e0bf0829fa42858d27e5b0907989e7~mv2_d_1740_1675_s_2.png/v1/fill/w_1200,h_1158,al_c,usm_0.66_1.00_0.01/88a28e_80e0bf0829fa42858d27e5b0907989e7~mv2_d_1740_1675_s_2.png (https://www.hocnashville.com) Lastly, I pressed Warren for a favorite dining venue to. I had not prepped him for this question but I was super pleased with his answer! Check out a hidden venue underneath the Johnny Cash Museum. Getting there and admitted through the secret door is just the first of the illusions you'll experience at House of Cards. Your excellent meal with be followed by a magic performance on their private stage, Carter the Great showroom. Then guests are invited to wander the venue and interact with close up magic and illusionists on a more intimate level. Hold onto your hats - things start to disappear left and right! https://files.fireside.fm/file/fireside-uploads/images/0/037e01ef-c3bb-4048-9bb2-f57e8e9144e2/kJO0F9qb.jpg (https://www.hocnashville.com) Concluding the show Warren welcomes listeners to visit his city but please stay a tourist! He jokes about the increase of traffic in the last 20 years. Enjoy Nashville and then go home! As with all music venues closing, and this article/podcast too - You don't have to go home, but you can't stay here! Hello Traveler, I hope you enjoyed this episode of Travel Radio Pocast. I asked my kids, "How would you like to put on a parade for chimpanzees at Halloween time?". I got one very excited "YES" and one absolute "NO". To be fair, the negative was a four year old that was not allowed to have ALL of the markers. I followed up by asking, "What if you dressed up like a monkey?" He changed his mind, "...YES, then they will all come to see me!" You got it buddy. That is exactly what happens at Project Chimps for the "Chimp or Treat" event. Children are invited to dress up and participate in a parade put on FOR THE CHIMPS to enjoy! The chimps in residence love children and they love them in colorful, creative attire even more. If your costume is particularly good you will be rewarded by a chimp or two at the window gazing curiously back at you. Rather than the zoo approach that makes the animals the spectacle, this puts the people on display for the animals to enjoy. https://projectchimps.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/DiscoveryDays.jpg This type of event typifies, in a good way, the type of care these former research chimps receive on a daily basis. Due to years spent in research labs these animals can't be released into the wild. They wouldn't know how to cope outside an enclosed area, forge for food or defend themselves. At Project Chimps, the resident chimpanzees experience freedom to roam and encounter people on their own terms on their own timeline. My guest, Ali Crumpacker, says the first thing guests want to know is if they get to hug a chimp. I will say it a little more sternly than she would... NO! No how and no way! In so many ways this is not safe for humans and not respectful of the animals. After years of negative interactions with humans the animals now get to live safe, minimally invasive lives. Project Chimps aims to keep it this way. https://projectchimps.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/Ali-Crumpacker.jpg Now don't be sad about the chimp cuddle you hoped for. There are a lot more ways to participate at Project Chimps. If you are up for a short hike you can tour the chimp enclosure with a Project Chimps guide. Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts can earn badges and more through cooperation of the friendly staff. Local persons can volunteer onsite regularly doing chimpanzee care, enrichment activities, gardening, communications, fundraising, events and facilities maintenance. College students with qualifying areas of study will find rewarding internships at Project Chimps too. Not local but still want to volunteer? Take a Chimpcation! Spend a week onsite and stay on the property while listening the the chimps sing at the moon. Please ask about age requirements or to arrange age appropriate participation. In addition to the regular visitation and volunteer opportunities you can also book special events. Seated in the foothills of the Blue Mountains the property is just stunning. Why not get married in the mountains, next to a private lake with the chimps in the trees chattering around you? For the nature lover this sounds like a dream and so is the price. I'm not going to spoil the reservation price. You will have to look it up yourself - they aren't charging enough! (https://projectchimps.org/events/private-events/) Private rentals also come with a private Chimp Enclosure tour (prior to any alcohol be served). https://projectchimps.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/PC-Couple-by-Pond.jpg At the moment Project Chimps has 79 resident Chimpanzees in two, 3 acre enclosures. They live in small family groups. The sanctuary is 236 acres to offer excellent expansion options. The goal is to house more than 200 chimpanzees and expand the family groups to more similarly reflect those of their truly wild counterparts. https://projectchimps.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/Almasi-with-Sky-Habitat.jpg Each chimpanzee requires approximately $22,000 per year to feed and house. None of this could be possible without donations. In addition to monetary contributions there are other ways to support Project Chimps. There are links below to Project Chimp’s Amazon wish list and more. If you are road tripping consider looking around your house and packing some of these items (https://projectchimps.org/wishlist/). Coronavirus Update (date): Project Chimps has temporarily suspended visits following the guidance of the US Centers for Disease Control. They are still booking visits after May 10. See all of the options and updates at projectchimps.org/visit -------------- Hello Traveler, I hope you enjoyed this episode of Travel Radio Pocast (https://www.travelradioonline.com). The Spirit of Aloha in Quarantine... (NOTE: This is information from an interview with Brian and Rowena Vasquez's first hand account. Medical advise and references for Coronavirus related matters should be derived from the WHO (https://www.who.int) or CDC (https://www.cdc.gov).) Brian and Rowena Vasquez, ambassadors of Aloha for Princess Cruise Lines, ukulele and hula instructors are locked in but not down. These two can be counted on for a smile or kind word not matter where they are. Brian even plays "Over The Rainbow" at the conclusion of the episode and it is a delight. https://imagery.zoogletools.com/u/43206/0c464ebfa7fefda69e675a0b484842557cb0b131/original/BR-cropped.jpg A regularly scheduled itinerary to Hawaii turned into Pacific circling when information surfaced that a guest on the previous sailing tested positive for Covid-19. San Francisco's mayor refused to allow the ship to doc and so it circled... for days. The onboard map showed the ship's path looking something like a toddlers repeat first attempts at round shapes. Finally, reaching an agreement with the city of, Oakland, California, they were allowed to dock. Persons needing medical attention were evacuated first. Then, according to Brian and Rowena, the CDC took over. Princess staff complied and adapted to everything asked of them. The remaining passengers were delayed getting off the ship by union members (Rowen assumes longshoremen) claiming unloading contracts and requiring additional time to get union laborers to the docks. Union members then refused to load baggage onto the passenger shuttle busses as this task did not fall into their labor contract. This delayed disembarkation further as Princess employees now had to return to the ship dock to take the task over. Guests and crew were largely waiting nervous and without information at this time. As a company caught in the middle of CDC, State/ Federal government regulations, unions and a damning news cycle Princess Cruise Lines was battered by a storm worse than any they've faced on the open sea. Brian and Rowena are quick to point out that as the changes came, new procedures rolled out, new isolation policies put in place Princess employees were amazing through out. Captain John Smith proved to be a leader and encourager in a way he likely never thought her would have to be. Prior to docking in Oakland, the ships programming and operations took shape in a new way. The dining rooms were shut down. Menus were delivered to each room three times a day for guests to order. The staff snapped into action adapting to the new routine. Bars were put on carts and guests were served in their rooms. Brian and Rowena pitched in and helped to entertainment staff create and deliver daily activity pack to each room. The contents were items like, quiz and trivia sheets to do along with the ships onboard televised programming. Rowena also provided hula lessons for in-room learning. After the debacle of waiting to disembark persons were dispersed to four locations. Brian and Rowena are in condo like complex with other persons from the ship. They are served by military members in hazmat suits. They are in a one bedroom unit and can access a common kitchen area stocked with excellent snack foods. There is also an area to get outside. Brain strolls and Rowen power walks her way around. They try to go out very early and late to avoid contact with other people. Brian and Rowena are keeping busy while in quarantine. (Well... Rowena pokes fun at Brian for being lazy and not writing another album... he just chuckles.) Rowena is writing her second book on native knowledge and culture lessons she was raised with. She recently released "Random Acts of Aloha (https://www.amazon.com/Random-Acts-Aloha-Rowena-Vasquez/dp/1091109400/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=random%20acts%20of%20aloha&qid=1584818732&sr=8-1&fbclid=IwAR1Rc8M5eHX6mhFFpnFgiehndOaNM_vDmVFUJEHT68i4xE2W8jdZoNqocLw)" on Amazon. At the time of recording (Friday, March 20th, 2020 GMT) Brian and Rowen were both healthy. They had been tested and awaiting results. Of the initial crew members that tested positive (assumed count 19) most are reported to be fully recovered. Most are of the crew are residents of the Philippines. They are back in the Philippines for 14 days of quarantine. https://files.fireside.fm/file/fireside-uploads/images/0/037e01ef-c3bb-4048-9bb2-f57e8e9144e2/Ignm88Dq.jpg unsplash-logoLucie Dawson Closing the program, Brian blesses us with a playing of, "Over the Rainbow" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Over_the_Rainbow). In the Playa (brand) ... Family Of Resorts! Dominican Republic, Punta Cana All-Inclusive Resorts You know you want to visit the Dominican Republic. The blue waters and sugary sand are calling your name... BUT, GOSH DARN IT! Too Many Choices How do you sort through all the all-inclusive properties!? Picking the right one, or the wrong one, could make or break your vacation. This week I welcome back my recent guest, Michelle Tatum, to discuss her very recent trip to four Playa Hotels and Resorts in the Dominican Republic. Topics include: Language is both English and Spanish. The locals dominantly speak Spanish. Use this as an opportunity to practice those rusty skills! Give it a try, it will go a long way with your hosts! It is a small kindness that shows you care! Dollars are accepted on property. Tipping - not necessary for included services. However, make sure to tip for added services. These include your room butler and spa technicians. Two Family Resorts: Hyatt Ziva... This family property is on the nicest beach (Michelle's trust worthy opinion). It is super high-end, described as located in the "Beverly Hills" area, while maintaining a playful color scheme that appeals to families. On this property families will find kids clubs (Drop them off for your DAILY DATE with your partner) or race each other on the four abreast slide in the water park. Little ones can enjoy water play on the splash pad. https://files.fireside.fm/file/fireside-uploads/images/0/037e01ef-c3bb-4048-9bb2-f57e8e9144e2/HC8PxzdJ.jpg Hungry? Just walk to the food truck to grab your littles their favorite and familiar favorites. They will find hamburgers, hot dogs and the like. Mom and Dad, you just hold off one more minute to eat. Place the kids back in the kids club and explore the resorts many gourmet dining options! Or, walk to the Hyatt Zilara next door for adults only dining venues. Resort rooms are available in a King option or with large double beds. This property offers connecting rooms. PUMP IT UP - This resort features a purpose built, state-of-the-art, 14,000 sq ft fitness center. Spaces include yoga areas, Peloton bikes, free weights, cross fit and more! Hilton La Romana: This is a recently aquired and renovated property ( it was formerly a Dreams property). It's about a 75 minute drive from Punta Cana and a 55min drive from the La Romana airport. Pack some snacks for the drive - you won't regret it! The drive is worth it! Are you a Hilton Honors member? You can earn Hilton Honors points at this property too! This resort just opened a water park that is hyped to be larger than the Ziva. Jump in and get the vacation started! Rooms are similar set up with options and connections to the Hyatt Ziva. Of note, there is an age restriction on the Ocean Front Jr. Suite Swim Out Rooms due it's proximity to the adults only side of the property (Hyatt Zilara). Dining options are plentiful to include Italian, French, Souther American, Grilled Seafood and more! Hello high rollers! Put it all on RED. This property boasts a casino! ADULTS ONLY PROPERTIES: Sanctuary: Take a step inside... are you in the DR or a romantic castle ruin somewhere in the Mediterranean? There a six pools, swim ups too, and roof top pool! The beach is private to the resort. There are only 323 suits giving this property a very boutique feel. Some suits offer butler service with 17 categories in total (don't let that overwhelm you; call your travel agent). The highest level suit is a private island option boasting several pools within the suit itself! The dark woods of the decor with remind you of colonial style but with contemporary couches, chairs and other modern touches. https://files.fireside.fm/file/fireside-uploads/images/0/037e01ef-c3bb-4048-9bb2-f57e8e9144e2/RpmjC85c.jpg On site activities include a Healthy Corner for health nuts to find smoothies and activities catered to them. The piano bar was formerly a church - gasp! Go enjoy it's groovy new vibes. Close by is a gold course designed by Jack Nicolas. Sancturary Town is a town within the resort offering dancing, shopping and opportunities to socialize with the locals who come for a nice night out. Entrance is complimentary to guests of the resort. The spa is as amazing as you would expect and water activities are also available. Dining is anything from Italian, sushi, steaks, fresh daily caught seafood, the juice bar and more! Dining is both in the property and within Sanctuary town. Do you get the munchies at 2am after dancing the night away? Order 24hrs room service! Hyatt Zilara: This is the property that is next door to Hyatt Ziva. It offers all the same amazing amenities as the Hyatt Ziva with the exception of the kids clubs because it is ADULTS ONLY! https://files.fireside.fm/file/fireside-uploads/images/0/037e01ef-c3bb-4048-9bb2-f57e8e9144e2/PN5msc0u.jpg The stand out feature of this adults only resort is the SPA! It was built to remind the spa goer of a ceynote. The high walls, rock outcroppings, open air ceiling and water fall bring it all nicely together. The spa features the first Himalayan Salt Lounge. -------------- Hello Traveler, I hope you enjoyed this episode of Travel Radio Pocast (https://www.travelradioonline.com). 256: Why Personal Action Matters

Leadership and the Environment

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 3, 2019 15:36

Why bother not flying if you're one person out of billions? Aren't you just missing out and suffering without meaningfully changing anything? These questions flummoxed me for a while. The longer I act, the more I realize the answer. Most people answer that little things add up or that it's like voting. I won't argue with those answers, but I think they're small effects. I've evolved since earlier episodes and my TEDx talk to find more important reasons. This episode shares my bigger reasons for personal action: you learn to act environmentally the way you learn any activity: practicing the basics. Don't act and you don't learn. If you want to influence others and you don't do what you lead them to, you lose credibility. They'll follow your inaction more than your words.Personal action doesn't guarantee they'll follow, but it gives you a chance. Without it, I don't see much chance at success. Would you take piano lessons from someone who can't play piano? Here are some notes I used for today's episode:Podcast: Do you ever go to the gym or some activity you've done enough to master, and someone new shows up and starts giving advice to people, beyond not knowing what they're talking about -- not even knowing they don't know what they're talking about? If you don't act sustainably yourself, you don't know what you're talking about. I used to let slide comments that one person's actions don't matter. Then I learned to distinguish. Now I see personal action is essential. Would you take piano lessons from someone who can't play? You know the person at the gym or fitness activity giving advice who clearly doesn't know what he or she is talking about? That's most people talking about environmental action. What it takes is not just an idea of what will lower emissions or produce less plastic. On the contrary, action leads to understand the issues. In particular, people's motivations, relevant emotions, world views. If people believe electric planes will solve airline emissions problems, no amount of data will influence them. We all have such blind spots. Our world is built on them.Community motivates. If your community believes or practices one thing, changing it means facing community challenges. Experienced leaders know how to face and overcome those challenges, not engineers.Creating a sustainability committee for my building and trying to get it to collect food scraps, a program New York City is bending over backward to help buildings do, the co-op board resisted for all sorts of reasons that experienced people could rebut with data. Still they resist. People laud me for taking over a year to fill a load of trash, but that personal change would be small compared to a building changing. But community change requires knowing my results from my personal change or I'd give up. The challenge with the board isn't lack of facts. They aren't bad or backward people.Because humans learn through experience and they lack experience, most people proposing solutions don't know what they're talking about. I met someone this morning who talked about how authentically and genuinely he, his company, and the company's famous founder-CEO committed to sustainability. Then, as we walked from the cafe where we met to his office, he ordered a coffee from a different cafe, which he got in a single-use disposable plastic cup, explaining to me that he skipped the straw, yet got a second plastic lid. This man has not experienced the personal change that leads to living authentically and genuinely. He's the guy at the gym who read a few books before going for the first time telling longtime regulars how to improve their form. A man telling a woman about pregnancy. A woman telling a man about being drafted.Fitness, and sustainability, comes from practice, consistent refinement, and such. It is as much mental as physical and nothing substitutes for experience. Resilience, persistence, focus, empathy, compassion, and so on are the tools of the trade. Yes, you must start and end with science, systems thinking, and nature, but until you push yourself to where you find the joy, glory, simplicity, and value of acting sustainably yourself, you're talking gibberish. If that's your issue, listen up. I've got some really great information to help you.Hey Forex traders, Andrew Mitchem here, the owner of the Forex Trading Coach with video and podcast #319.The biggest problem – a lack of timeLast week I sent out some forms and I said to people, "Just let me know what your biggest trading problem is?" Without doubt, one of the biggest issues that many of you face is you just don't feel like you have enough time. Like there's just not enough hours in the day to do the things that you need to do. Time you've been to work, time you travel, time you got home, time you looked after the kids and fed them and put them to bed. Other commitments; sports, clubs, whatever it might be. That really the last thing that you feel like or having the energy to feel like doing is sitting down and watching the charts for hour upon hour upon hour just waiting for that set up to occur. It's a common problem and I really understand it and I really get it.How we can help you at TFTCSo the great thing is about that is that I can definitely help you there. How do I know I can help you? Over the last 10 years I've helped so many people who have been in similar positions to you. Now with my strategy, the good thing about it is it works across all currency pairs. But more importantly, it works across all timeframe charts.Trader from Noosa, Australia on Weekly chartsNow I'll give you an example. My very first client over in Noosa in Australia, beautiful part of the world. The guy that I taught ended up owning a running a five-star restaurant over there. He was the owner, one of the head chefs, just fully on commitment seven days a week. He had two young kids at the time as well. He ended up trading just the weekly charts and doing exceptionally well. Now I caught up with him on a Skype session about six months ago. He's now spent the last two years with his wife and his two kids travelling around Europe. He's just loving it; he's travelling from country to country and they are just absolutely having a fantastic time. He's still trading, but all he's doing now is he's trading the weekly charts like he used to plus he's adding the daily charts. So it means he's trading for 10 minutes once a day on his laptop. Shuts the laptop down, does his travelling, has a great day. Next day 10 minutes, move on. Really, really great way of trading. You can apply that whether you're travelling around the world with your wife and your kids or whether you just have so many commitments and lack of time at home doing what you're doing right now.A massive +5.3% gain in the last weekTo give you another example, in the last week with the daily trades we've made a 3.5% gain with only risking half of 1% on each trade. So 3.5% gain. Also on the weekly charts… I've just closed out a weekly chart trade just yesterday, made a 1.8% gain on the Pound/Australian Dollar. We've got two trades still open on the weekly charts right now as I'm making this video with a open position of 1.5% gain. But on the closed trades, the daily chart trades and that one weekly chart trade, we've made a net of + 5.3% gain so far in the last week. So 5.3% and that's taken us 10 minutes a day, if that. The other benefit is if you become a client, all of those trades with the exact entry and exits and the reasons for taking the trade, more importantly the actual reasons,

If that's you, listen up, I've got some really good news.Hi Forex traders, Andrew Mitchem here, The Forex Trading Coach with video and podcast number 259.Most people don’t think they have sufficient time to tradeToday's video and podcast is all about having available time in order to trade. You see, most people will find that they don't have sufficient time in the day. I had an email just this morning from a guy called Brian. Brian said to me, "Andrew look, I don't think I'm gonna do your course because I don't have enough time to dedicate to trading. Time I go to work, come home, help the wife, help with the kids, try and do something for me, some sports, leisure, music, there's just not enough hours in the day to then go and sit and watch charts all day."It's a common problem that so many people have, and you see the problem is that so many people think that they need to be staring at the charts all day. In reality you don't.New traders want to watch the charts all dayYou see, the problem is this, when most people start trading, they want to be looking at the charts all day long. They're looking at every pip of movement, they're looking at every news release, they're adding indicators, they're trying to make this special combination, this nice concoction of magical indicators that's suddenly gonna tell them all these perfect trading signals, to buy here and sell here.Unfortunately it just does not work like that. Most people then start to go down to shorter timeframe charts because they want to look at five minute charts or 15 minute charts, and they're trying to pick every single movement, every swing, every upward movement, every downward movement. Are you ready to trade or is the market ready? When they place trades, they're placing them because they are ready, not the market is ready. It's like, "Well, my clock says I've got an hour to trade, I'm gonna find a trade and I'm gonna find something suitable to trade." So they're forcing themselves to go shorter and shorter timeframes, and just placing a trade for almost like the need to want to place a trade, not because it's the right thing to do at that time.Scared to leave the charts? Then, when they place a trade, they're scared to leave the charts because they might miss out on a one or two extra pips on that trade, or it might pull back against them and, "Oh my goodness, what am I gonna do now?" You'd understand what I'm saying because we've all been there, and I've been there myself so I know exactly that's the reality for most new traders.I can tell you that after 15 years as a full-time Forex trader and a coach, I've kind of seen it all by now, I've been through it all, and I've seen it all, and I've heard it all. I can honestly tell you this.Less is MoreThe phrase ‘less is more' is absolutely, perfectly suited to becoming a good Forex trader. What I mean by that is this, the less you trade, the less time you spend looking at your charts, the less you're fiddling with trades, the more you'll make, the better you'll be.

Let's talk about that and more right now.Hey, forex traders, Andrew Mitchem here, The Forex Trading Coach. This is video and podcast number 230.Should you trade 5 minute charts?I'm going to talk about five minute chart trades. Why should you trade them? Should you trade them? Let's talk about that and see what your answer is in a couple of minutes from now. The reason I want to talk about five minute charts is I had an email from a guy in the UK called Michael. He came to me and said, "Look, Andrew, I'm struggling with my trading. I purchased a course." I'm not going to name you the course, but he said, "Look, I purchased the course, been doing it for a little while and I'm getting nowhere."I said to him, "Okay, so tell me about the style of trading."He said, "Look, it's all based on five minute charts." Instantly for me that's like a bit of a warning system going off there.Unrealistic way of trading – too much chart time neededI said, "Okay, Michael, what's the issue? Why can you not trade the system?"He said to me, "Well, it's requiring a lot of" his time, a lot of the chart time, like he's sitting at the computer a lot. He's got work to do. He's got a wife and kids to commit to. He said, "I just can't commit that amount of time to sitting there watching charts, and when I do sit there watching charts, I'm feeling like I'm forcing trades to happen. I'm overtrading. I'm constantly scanning different charts, different currency pairs. I'm on five minute charts looking for setup, scared to miss something, and almost like a gambling mentality, that constantly having to do something, scared to miss a trade."Trading at silly times of the morningHe also said that he has a mentor with his course who's over in America. He gets up at like three or four o'clock in the morning to trade the European session. Michael's there trying to go to work, and he's trying to trade. There's people getting up at like silly o'clock in the morning, crazy times in the morning, to trade these five minute time frame charts because they think they have to be there at that time trading these short time frame charts. You can get where I'm going with this. To me it's crazy. It's not sustainable. Even if you're making money from trading five minute charts, if you want to do that then maybe select say like an hour or so at a time that you're going to sit and do that.My system works on five minute charts but I don't trade five minute charts. The same principle applies, but the downside is also you have to commit yourself to sitting watching the computer. You feel like you're forcing trades because you think [inaudible 00:02:40], therefore I'm going to look for trades.Less strength on a 5 minute chartThe short time frame charts, if you're a technical trader like I am, a five minute chart doesn't really have a great deal of relevance because they still do work technically, but they have less relevance and less strength than say like an hour chart, or a four hour chart, or a daily chart, something like that. The other thing is also you have to be really careful and mindful of news events.

In this episode, we finish discussing the results of our Colorado survey. We cover the topics of repealing and replacing Obamacare and how well the Democrat and Republican parties are connecting with Colorado voters. We also discuss voter opinion of a building a wall along the Mexican border, the Trump administration’s temporary travel ban from seven Muslim countries and withholding federal funding from cities that do not enforce our nation’s immigration laws. Overview Among likely 2018 voters, 63% think that the Republican Party is out of touch and 60% think that the Democratic Party is out of touch. Respondents are split on the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare), as 48% oppose the legislation and 47% support it. When asked how they want Congress to handle Obamacare, a clear majority of 60% wants to keep what works and fix what doesn’t. That number is far lower among Republicans, as 40% would prefer that that law is repealed and that Congress would start over with new healthcare legislation. When asked about specific policies that been enacted or discussed during President Trump’s first 100 days in office, small majorities oppose the travel ban on predominantly Muslim countries (52% oppose) and the proposal to withhold federal funding from sanctuary cities (53% oppose). 62% of respondents oppose building a wall along the U.S. border of Mexico that is estimated to cost billions of dollars. Both Parties Viewed as Out of Touch When asked whether the Republican Party is in touch with the concerns of most people in Colorado, 63% of respondents think that it is out of touch. The Democratic Party does not fare much better, as 60% of respondents think that it is out of touch. These results are roughly in line with what the latest Washington Post/ABC News poll found, which we discussed on our podcast last week. A Split on Obamacare Now over a month removed from the first failed attempt at repeal, respondents were asked whether they support or oppose the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare. The results show a very divided 2018 electorate split along partisan lines, with 86% of Republicans opposing Obamacare and 86% of Democrats supporting it. Not only is there a partisan split, but voter intensity is also high on both sides, as 72% of Republicans strongly oppose Obamacare, and 60% of Democrats strongly support it. Clearly, whatever actions are taken by the Republican-led Congress regarding Obamacare will be important in determining the political environment for 2018. Do you look at the number of Pips you make, or do you look at the percentage return on your account you make? Let's talk about that and more right now.Hi traders, it's Andrew Mitchem here, The Forex Trading Coach. Today is Friday the 12th of February. I want to talk about a really topical subject.Money management and RiskI've had quite a lot of emails this week from people asking about money management and risk. I've also had quite a few emails from people saying, "Andrew, look, you know, I've made my account go from $1000 to $5000 and then I've blown it all in one day. I get that type of email quite often. What it shows me is that there are so many people out there who don't understand correct money management. How important are Pips?Unfortunately, when you look around online the vast majority of people tell you to measure your success of any strategy or years as a trader in terms of the number of Pips you make. I personally believe that that is not correct. I'll give you some examples of why. Just to quickly read out an email here that someone sent to me. "Hey, Andrew, can you tell me why I express my success in percentages and why I think that's better than Pips?" This person says, "Percentages depend on the account and, actually, say nothing about your success whereas Pips show you what's going on right now. That's from Jera Flow.Percentages are the same regardless of your account sizeI'm not sure that it's quite right, because for me a percentage is a percentage. It doesn't matter, regardless of your account size. As an example, this week right now I'm up 2.3% on my account right now. If I had a $10,000 account that means I've made $230 this week. If I had a $100,000 account it means I've made $2300 this week. It's still the same amount. It's the same amount risked. It's the same amount in terms of percentage gain made. The only thing that makes the difference between actual monetary value is the size of the account, but I'm still risking the same amount on each of the two accounts, and I'm still making the same amount on each of the two accounts. To me that's a far better way of being profitable than by looking at the number of Pips you make. The problem with counting success in PipsThe problem is, let's say you took many trades on shorter time-frame charts, say like one-hour charts, 15-minute charts, and you made lots of small profitable trades, let's say. You made 10 Pips, and 15, and 20, and 30, etc., those sort of smaller amount of Pips. The thing is then you go and take a trade on say a daily chart and it loses 100 Pips, so that one trade that goes wrong completely outdoes and takes away from all those gains that you've made on all those shorter time-frame charts on lots of really good successful trades. You may have 80-90% win rate within your trading in terms of your profitable trades, but that way of trading in terms of looking at the number of Pips you've actually gone backwards and lost money.Whereas, if I had an equal risk on each one of those trades, regardless of it's profit target and regardless of its time-frame chart, for instance, then if I can make let's say half,

Podcast: Do you need to take a bigger risk to trade a higher time frame chart? In this video: 01:33 Understanding Position Size 03:09 What’s Your Style Of Trading 04:04 Free Lot Size CalculatorSome people think that if they trade a higher time frame chart it means they need to take more risk because their stop loss has to be bigger. It's just not the case, but I'm going to explain to you why right now.Hi Forex traders, it's Andrew Mitchem here, the owner of The Forex Trading Coach, and today is Friday the 4th of September. I've had an email here from Rajesh, and it's quite a common email and quite a common misconception out there in the trading world, mostly from new traders, but also I do get the same comment from some experienced traders as well.People seem to think that they can't trade bigger time frame charts because they think they need to take more risk on a trade, and the reason they think they need to take more risk is because their stop loss needs to be bigger in terms of the amount of pips. The email from Rajesh says, "Andrew, if one uses higher time frames, will this not affect the stop loss placement, and therefore be at a higher cost?" It's just not true at all, and as I've mentioned, many people think that it is true, and that's a misconception. Let's explain why.Understanding Position SizeIf you have a 10 pip stop loss people think that's a very small risk, and they think at the same time that if you have a 100 pip stop loss it's a very big risk in terms of monetary amount. People think that with a small account they can't trade a longer time frame, let's say a daily chart that has a 100 pip stop loss, because the stop loss is just too big and I can't afford that risk, and it's wrong. All you need to do is have a better understanding of position sizing, and I've got a great tool on my website that's available free of charge. It's called a lot size calculator. Get your copy, because it will really help you understand position sizing.Have a think of it this way: If you were to risk 10 pips on a trade and you place one standard lot on that trade, that's no different than risking 0.1 lots with 100 pips stop loss. It's exactly the same; if you lose, you lose exactly the same. It doesn't matter whether it's 10 pips or 100 pips, it's the position size that you change that makes the stop loss monetary value the same.Think of that same example. Let's say on that 10 pip stop loss trade you have a profit target of, say, 20 pips. It's no different than a 100 pip stop loss trade having a target of 200 pips. The money that you make is exactly the same if you have your position size correct. It's still a 2 to 1 reward to risk trade. You're risking 10 pips to make a potential 20, and on the other scenario, on the longer time frame chart, you're risking 100 pips to make a potential 200, but because of the way you've positioned your placement you've got 10 times smaller risk on the 100 pip stop loss trade. The actual amount that you gain if the trade is profitable, or you lose if the trade is a losing trade, is exactly the same regardless of which scenario you go.What’s Your Style Of TradingOf course, that depends on your style of trading, whether you like the scalping, shorter time frames, or whether you like the longer time frame trades. You could quite easily argue that if you take lots of trades with, say, 10 pip stop losses, you actually have probably a higher chance of getting stopped out because it only takes a small movement within the price to wipe your 10 pips out. By the time you allow a couple of pips for spread, and then maybe an 8 pip movement, your trade's stopped out so much more easily than on a longer time frame chart where you have a 100 pip stop loss. Of course you could argue that the 20 pips in the profit is likely to be hit a lot easier on the short time frame...

Podcast: Do win rates really matter? In this video:00:31   Two Sides To The Story 02:31   Going Back To The Basics 04:10   Two Webinars for New and Experienced TradersDoes your win rate really matter? Let's talk about that and more right now. Hi there, Forex traders. It's Andrew Mitchem here, the Forex trading coach. Today is Friday, the 14th of August. In today's video and podcast, I want to talk about a subject that eventually had 2 emails about just this week. It's about your win rate. How many trades out of 10, let's say, for example, are you profitable on, and does that really matter? Two Sides To The Story Like most things, there's 2 sides to the story here, and I'd like to read out just some extracts from two of those emails. The first one is from Hadish, and he says, "Look, Andrew, I'm looking for some form of trading system or trading signals that are going to make me money on 7 or 8 out of 10 trades." Just park that for one moment, and then I'll read you an extract and the second email was from Robert, and Robert said to me, "Andrew, I'm able to make money from my trades, but then I'm finding that they're turning against me. The problem is that my losing trades end up staying in the market for too long and being big losing trades, and then I end up cutting short my winning and my profitable trades.” Robert is saying he's ending up with around a 7 or 8 out of 10 winning trades, but the problem is, like he says here, is that his losing trades run into the thousands of dollars, yet his profitable winning trades are only running into the hundreds of dollars, and so there's an obvious problem. Like Robert says here, "I need to find a way to cut my losses short and end up being profitable," because, you see, when you think about that, the first email from Hadish wants 7 or 8 out of 10 winning trades. Robert's got that; yet, he's losing a lot of money. Again, it comes back to the question and the topic that I've mentioned. Do win rates really matter? From a psychological point of view, well, obviously, you don't want to be, let's say, losing 9 out of 10 trades, even though you could still be profitable. That's probably not really what people are after, but it also goes to show that when people come to me and they say, "Hey, Andrew, what's your win rate, or are you winning 80% of the time?" it's not really quite as important as most people think it is. Going Back To The Basics To me, it comes back to the basics that I talk about. The basics are:* You have very low risk per trade* You have higher reward to risk from your tradesThat means that if your trade has been a profitable trade, it's making … depending on the trade and the time frame of the chart you're trading, but you need to be making that sort of 2, 3, or 4 times your risk when you have profitable trades. With the low risk, I mean that you have a set percentage risk on every trade. The problem is that Robert was having his losing trades being massive losing trades. That just shouldn't happen because you should have a controlled risk on each trade, so it's X percent of your account. In my case, it's always half of 1%, so on a $10,000 account, let's say, the most you can lose on any one trade is $50. If you think about having the high returns on each trade, it means that you're making $100 or $150 or $200 on a profitable trade, yet you're only risking $50 on that trade, so you know the very worst you can do. What I highly recommend, Robert especially, you do is you download my Lot Size calculator. It's freely available on my site. It's a fantastic tool, and it helps to keep your risk under control and mana...
