Like many Olympians and Paralympians, Susannah Scaroni has had to overcome her share of challenges. In her case, a car accident at the age of 5 caused her to need a wheelchair for mobility, a journey that led her to adaptive sports. Her initial experience was not positive. But when she discovered a welcoming adaptive sports program in Spokane, Washington, her interest grew. As her training grew, so did her accomplishments. And eventually that led to a spot on the Paralympic team at the 2012 London Games in the marathon, which has become something of a specialty. She competed again in Rio in 2016 and Tokyo in 2020 and in Paris will compete in her fourth Paralympic Games, having qualified for the marathon, the 800 meter, the 1500 meter and the 5000 meter races. While she has traveled the world competing in some of the biggest events around, the process has not been easy, and still poses challenges. Not all event organizers are doing the best they can to accommodate adaptive sports athletes, even at events as large as the World Championships. In this discussion, we trace Saroni's journey to adaptive sports, talk about her experience at the Paralympics and other major sports events and delve into things event organizers and host cities can and should be thinking about when it comes to the next generation of para athletes.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

“I remember not knowing whether I was going to be able to race that day. I felt so emotional, I was crying. I had tears on my face and I was just thinking about just how weird the circumstances were, and just feeling how it was taken from Daniela, but it wasn't from me.” Susannah Scaroni had one career high in summer of 2021—she won her first two Paralympic medals, a gold and a silver, at the Tokyo Games. This past May 29, she had another, when she set the world record in the 5,000 meters for the T54 category. In between came one of her greatest challenges. In September, she was struck by a car while training, sustaining a burst fracture in her T8 vertebrae. Treatment included a clamshell-like back brace and restricted movements, which kept her out of the fall marathon season—and had her wondering about her future in the sport. As if that weren't enough to make her recent record-breaking performance more emotional, the race took place at the Daniela Jutzeler Memorial meet, named for a Swiss wheelchair racer killed in a similar collision. Susannah joins us on this week's show fresh off that incredible accomplishment, and talks through what it took to get there, the lingering effects of the crash, and how it's changed her outlook on athletics—and life. With seven laps to go in the Paralympic 5000 meters, Susannah Scaroni went to the front of the pack. When she looked at the big screen she had almost 100 meters on the field. In “no man's land” she could either wait for the pack or keep going. She kept going, saving a bit in reserve in case they caught her. They didn't. She won the gold, a second off the World Record. Heading into marathon season following the Games, she was ready to make her mark on her favorite race when a car hit her on a training run before she could even get to the starting line. She's recovered, with training times rivaling those from last year, but says that her competitors can't know what to expect from her because she doesn't know what to expect from herself. It might be something great.

Susannah Scaroni is a 3 time Paralympic wheelchair racer who recently won the Gold medal in the T54 5000m, bronze in the T54 800m and 6th in the wheelchair marathon at the Tokyo Paralympic Games. Susannah is currently completing her dietetic internship program after completing her masters degree with Nick Burd (E1). Susannah shares with us her nutrition journey and specifically how she's changed her focus on protein intake for training.
Susannah Scaroni will push a racing wheelchair the rest of her life if she has a choice. Her first two years of college, before she started at the University of Illinois, she'd just go out to look at the scenery and to meditate without regard to speed or distance. One of her professors suggested she use “map my ride,” which revealed she was doing about 22 miles a day. Susannah prefers the purity of pushing herself as hard as she can, but in Tokyo she will pit her strengths against the rest of the world.

Together Alone To respond to the challenges caused by the global COVID-19 pandemic, the network of Finnish Cultural and Academic Institutes launched Together Alone, an open call for artistic projects. For the next two episodes, of which the first will even have an extra bonus Intro, FALLUCKA has collaborated with The Finnish Cultural Institute in Denmark. Together with special guest host Irene Campolmi we have selected two different artistic projects to do a podcast on. In the podcast we will learn more about how the artists behind these projects worked and which challenges and opportunities they had and are still working on during COVID-19. More info about all the Together Alone projects here: Link: https://www.togetheralonefi.com/ Special guest host at FALLUCKA: Irene Campolmi is an independent curator and researcher based in Copenhagen working and living in transit. Her current research investigates postcolonial, queer and feminist theories through performance and hybrid artistic ecologies. Normally right now, many of us would be glued to the TV watching the Summer Olympics, but, of course, it has become one of the many unfortunate pandemic postponements this year. Since 1960, the Paralympics have also been held the same year as the Olympics and they too have been postponed. Today I talk with one of the athletes who would have competed in this year’s competition, Susannah Scaroni. Susannah is a wheelchair racer with an emphasis on the marathon. She competed in the 2012 and 2016 paralympics and has been one of the world’s elite marathoners for almost 10 years. In this conversation, we talk about her disappointment in not competing in this year’s games, misconceptions about para-athletes and keys to her resilience. You can follow Susannah on Twitter @KenyanScaroni and Instagram @suscaroni.

This is the 31th episode of FF, and I am really happy and honored to talk about innovation in insurance with Bruno Scaroni, who is director of group strategy and innovation at Generali.
