On November 5, 1936 — The Dodgers name Burleigh Grimes as their new manager. The former Brooklyn spitballer will be replacing Casey Stengel, who was fired last month during the World Series after compiling a 208-251 (.453) record during his four-year tenure. The Dodgers for a short period will be paying 3 managers, Max Carey, Grimes and Stengel. Grimes will last two seasons and win only 131 games and lose 171.On November 5, 1997 – In an unprecedented move, Davey Johnson resigns the same day he is named American League Manager of the Year. Despite the fact that Johnson ended the Baltimore Orioles' 13-year playoff drought in 1996 and led the Orioles to the league's best record in 1997 (98-64), a dispute over $10,500 in fines to second baseman Roberto Alomar ends Johnson's reign in Baltimore. Johnson directed the fines to be paid to a charity. Orioles owner Peter Angelos is upset with the way the matter is handled and Johnson resigns. On November 5, 2010 — One of the approximately 60 rare T206 Honus Wagner baseball cards, auctioned off by the Baltimore-based School Sisters of Notre Dame, is acquired by a sporting card store owner Doug Walton, who pays $262,000 for the treasured piece of memorabilia. A talented center fielder, he combined with Jesse Barfield and George Bell to form what was sometimes called the best outfield in baseball in the late 1980s.In 1983 Moseby became the first Blue Jay to score 100 runs in a season, and tied teammate Damaso Garcia for a team-record (and league-leading) 21-game hitting streak. The following season, he tied with teammate Dave Collins for the AL lead in triples, and was a consistent run-producer and stolen base threat for the mid-80s Jays. By the end of the decade, the “best outfield” was being dismantled. Barfield was traded to the Yankees, and emerging prospect Junior Felix was gradually pushing Moseby out of center. When Moseby signed with the Detroit Tigers in December 1989, he left Toronto as the Blue Jays' career leader in games, at-bats, runs, hits, doubles, total bases, extra-base hits, stolen bases, strikeouts, being hit by the pitch, and sacrifice flies.

Preaching for the Second Sunday of Easter, Jenny DeVivo offers a reflection on embrace the whole of the paschal mystery every day: "Last Sunday, we heard the narration of the resurrection of Jesus, and today we have the disciples testifying to the resurrection. Apart from the glories of Easter Sunday and its celebration, in the ordinary days of Christian life we need the testimony of one another. On the days that the world has not stopped to collectively celebrate the resurrection, on the ordinary Tuesdays when it is business as usual, we need one another to attest to the resurrection in light of the reality of the cross." Jenny DeVivo, OblSB, PhD is a biblical scholar who received her PhD in New Testament and Early Christianity from Loyola University Chicago. She spent 10 years teaching biblical studies and other courses in theology in various Catholic universities. Currently, she serves as the Executive Director of Mission and Heritage at her alma mater, Saint Xavier University in Chicago. She is also a spiritual director, trained in the Spiritual Guidance Training Program at the Siena Center, in Racine, WI. Jenny is a Benedictine Oblate with St. Benedict's Monastery in St. Joseph, MN. Her theology, ministry, and spirituality have been shaped deeply by various religious communities, particularly, in order of appearance, the Sisters of Mercy, the School Sisters of Notre Dame, and the Benedictines. Join Franciscan Sister Callista Robinson as she breaks open her experience as an African American woman of faith, rooted in her own culture. A life-long learner and teacher, her hospitality and compassion serve to build bridges of relationships across cultures. For a video version of this episode, see: https://youtu.be/x9N0uDm-A_E From Sister Callista's interview: “Franciscan values of compassion, serving the very poor and underserved, have really influenced me as a Franciscan Sister. And peacemaking and social justice, those are Franciscan values. It seems to me you cannot talk to a Franciscan without hearing that person say something about social justice and how we have to go out to those who are not served. … Another Franciscan value that we have is we're very hospitable.” Wisdom to share: “Have a conversation with God, which we call prayer, an open and honest conversation where you let God do the talking and you do the listening. And from there each person will receive the wisdom that they need, whether that is to be more trustful, to be more compassionate, to be more accepting of others from a different culture, whatever that might be. Listening and talking with God – but more listening rather than talking.” For a full transcript, please include episode number and email: fslfpodcast@fslf.org. My last mentor of the season is one who has known me since before I was born, my Aunt and Godmother, Sharon Kanis of the School Sisters of Notre Dame. Taking her vows at the age of 19, Sharon has since gotten a degree in chemistry, a masters in applying Jungian theory to biblical archetypes, and a PhD in how people experience their spirituality in their bodies. When asked if I could introduce her as Doctor Sharon Kanis SSND she scoffed and said the phd was just a thing she did a while ago. Sharon is a truth teller and willing to question her own assumptions with enduring humility. She has traveled the world to pay witness and be of service. An educator through her decades of service, she brings people and their shared experiences together in community. Sharon has rooted her service in the interconnectedness of the web of life and is unwavering from the oneness of the universe. In this episode, you'll hear that the thing Sharon attributes her progress to is also the biggest obstacle she's faced as a leader - mutual accountability; showing up, consistently, willing to meet someone where they're at, to get the work done. And although sometimes inconvenient, it is necessary and rooted in justice. Show Notes: The lesson I taught her at three years old. The difference between community and communion. Theology isn't about answers, it's about questions. Our identities are not reasons for division but markers for community. How to stay in communication with people when egos inflate the room. Consensus is not always efficient but it is necessary. The philosophy of mutual availability. The web of life and what it means to be interconnected. Making time for contemplative practice. What happens to one of us happens to all of us. Weaving together common experiences as a mode of operation. Order Becky's Book Impact With Integrity: Repair the World Without Breaking Yourself
During the farm crisis of the 1980s, Sister Mary Tacheny returned to her farming roots, helping the church respond during a difficult time. She knew where she was needed, working with rural leaders on policy as well as assisting farmers directly. This week, Sister Mary tells Ron about growing up on a small dairy farm southeast of Mankato, Minnesota, where she and her siblings went with her parents each Sunday to check the fields. She talks about her years working with farmers and rural leaders as well as creating the Center for Earth Spirituality. Sister Mary is a School Sister of Notre Dame of the Mankato, Minnesota, campus of the Central Pacific Province. Her family continues to farm the land where she grew up. After 28 years as a secondary teacher and administrator, Sister Mary became the educational consultant to the Minnesota Catholic Bishops and their Rural Life Directors. Her task was to help the church respond to the crisis farmers were experiencing in the early ‘80s when the banks and other lending institutions were foreclosing on mortgages and farmers were losing their farms. It was a time to unite people and support one another, to work toward solutions together. This became sister's passion for the next 25 years. In 1996, Sister Mary helped establish the Center for Earth Spirituality and Rural Ministry, now the Living Earth Center, to bring together people who were passionate about ecological solidarity and enhancing right relationships between each other, the local community, and the greater Earth. Starting first as a small community garden and advocacy group, Living Earth Center grew to be a network of gardeners, volunteers, and advocates. Sister Mary celebrated 75 years of service as a School Sister in 2020. At that time, she continued to be an active member of the School Sisters of Notre Dame Earth Committee championing the Living Earth Center. The interview was conducted on Nov. 24, 2015. K (they/them and she/her) was raised Roman Catholic in Chicago and is now a hospice chaplain and ceremony officiant in Jo Daviess county, Illinois. They discovered Wicca in middle school and converted immediately, as this was the first time they had ever heard of a loving, non-masculine God. Thanks to the social justice and inclusivity of the School Sisters of St. Francis at Alverno College, where K studied art therapy in undergrad, K has come to the path between Wicca and Catholicism. The sacred nature of our queer family, history, and Pride has inspired both their spirituality and artwork for many years. K has facilitated workshops, both in person and virtually, on how church groups can be more queer inclusive and feminist. They are also a textile artist with a strong focus on Marian imagery. This month's special episode concerning inner, personal experiences in Celtic Spirituality is an interview with my aunt, Dr. Patricia Shea. She is Professor Emeritus of Education, and holds an MA in Religious Studies. Currently, she is a life coach, faciliator, and spiritual director. Patricia was also a Catholic nun in the Order of the School Sisters of Notre Dame for many years. At this stage of her life, however, she considers herself a Celtic Crone. What Patricia will be sharing in this interview is an integration of what she has learned from others within the area of Celtic Spirituality, combined with her own personal perspectives based upon her life experiences. This is not an academic discussion, but more a space for Patricia to share her own insights about her spiritual path, including her views about religion, and mysticism as well. We discuss what Celtic Spirituality is, the Celtic Wheel and how this is attuned to the Earth, the Winter Solstice, and even some opportunities a worldwide pandemic can offer to help us all explore deeper questions about life. Wishing you all a Happy Solstice!EPISODE REFERENCES - SELECTED BIBLIOGRAPHYCahill, Thomas. How the Irish Saved Civilization. 1995 Conway, D.J. & Lisa Hung. Sr. Bridget and Sr. Jill share their vocation stories - journeys that took time to unfold, how their congregation was formed in response to the need for education for young women, and then left some words of wisdom to listeners about the importance of being open to God’s call in our lives by taking time to pray and journeying with others because discernment is a step by step process. The SSND vocation team offer accompaniment to help sort out the sense of call from God in their hearts. You’ve no doubt sat in your science classes ( gosh that feels like a long time ago) and learned about the theory of evolution. Quick refresher: It’s about how the fittest survive the harsh changes in the environment and comes out as the victor. But we regularly hear about new diseases, giving us more reasons to be vigilant about our overall health. How are we supposed to get through life as healthily as we could? With the spread of contagious diseases and health risks, our body needs a line of defense that would keep us immune and protected. Hold up, don’t get too stressed about it! We do have ways to protect our health, and it’s not just through supplements. Presenting... the armada of teeny-tiny microbiomes in our gut! That’s right! These microorganisms stand at the vanguard of all the dangerous battles that we face every day! Did you know that aside from shielding us from potential harm from our environment, they can also affect our cognitive processes? They do so much of the heavy lifting to break food down into body building, brain nourishing information. Yes, that’s right. And knowing more about how it all works can definitely help us all have sharper minds and better memory health.Let’s put your battle gear on as we learn from the National Geographic science communicator, Gut Bug Pioneer and author, Scott Anderson. He’ll tell us how to build on our natural line of defense and train it to fight at its best. I’m sure you’re now also asking, “How can I keep their numbers growing?” No worries, we got you. In this show you’ll learn about: The role of the gut microbes in your immune system How gut microbes affect your mental health How your diet plays a significant role in maintaining a healthy level of good microbes inside your body. In today’s show, you will learn how to optimise your health and cognitive fitness though the power of your microbiome! Let’s now power up our body’s line of defense and boost the bugs for brain power! Listen To The Podcast Now. About Our Guest Scott C. Anderson is a scientist who specialises in health and technology. He is the author of several science books, including Human Embryonic Stem Cells and co-authored multinational best selling The Psychobiotic Revolution. The Role of Microbes and Our Brain Health Why Do We Have These Bacteria? We can never get away from bacteria. They are ubiquitous and coat every surface of the earth. Certain bacteria grew with us, and we grew up with them in a way that was beneficial to both of us. A lot of them are unique to humans. These bacteria have become used to us. They help in protecting us from pathogens. Two Forms of Human Immunity First, the innate immune system is fighting bacteria in our environment. Second, the adaptive immune system helps us deal with things our body has never encountered before. This system functions more like hit or miss. How Can Bacteria Build Our Adaptive Immunity It takes a bacterium to fight a bacterium. We need to live together with our gut bacteria and recruit them to fight the pathogens of the outside world. It can be good or bad, depending on who is in charge. A lot of those bacteria are what makes a good set of microbes in our gut called microbiota. The Human Gut and Its Microorganisms The gut consists of the whole alimentary canal, starting from our mouth all the way to the anus. Our microbiome is composed of a broad variety of microorganisms that have specific roles to play within the alimentary canal. There are situations when some of the harmful bacteria, microorganisms and their metabolites can get into our blood system, especially when our immune system is down. That’s when we get inflammation, the immune system’s alarm bells are starting to ring. They can also get into the brain through the blood and cross the blood brain barrier. Bacteria associated with gingivitis have been found in people's brains living with dementia on autopsy. How Bacteria Can Affect the Brain First, it can affect the brain through the vagus nerve. The second way is through the immune system. The third is through the hormonal system through the HPA axis (hypothalamus, pituitary and adrenal gland). Now, researchers are looking into whether bacteria can get to our brain through the metabolites they produce. Drugs and Our Immune System Recent studies would show that some medications we are taking are fighting the bacteria; in the process, they are also killing our own cells. There is collateral damage when we try to fight bacteria and end up damaging our cells as well. How Can We Create a Healthy Relationship with Our Microbiome? One of the challenges is not knowing enough about probiotics. Some of the available supplements in the market cannot be trusted. However, we can get probiotics without resorting to supplements. We can do this by consuming probiotic foods like kimchi, yoghurt and sauerkraut. Changes in diet can lead to a more diverse microbiota. The more different species you have, the better. The Mediterranean diet has been strongly associated with reduced inflammation. Fish, the main protein source in the diet, has high omega 3 ( DHA= docosahexaenoic acid), and EPA = eicosapentaenoic acid) which is a key fatty acid for the brain. Several studies associate higher omega-3 intake with decreased age-related mental decline and a reduced risk of Alzheimer's disease You can also lower inflammation by feeding your gut bacteria fibre. Fibre! Fibre! Fibre! Oi! Oi! Oi! Almost every known chronic disease like cancer, Alzheimer’s, diabetes and Parkinson’s have their roots in systemic inflammation. Many systemic inflammation comes from the gut. Aim to keep a robust balance of bacteria, as one pillar to supporting your memory health. There’s almost a upside for every single organ in your body, especially your beautiful brain. It’s a win - win game really. Happy Bugs = Happy Life Bacteria and Protein Build-Up Our immune system tracks down and identifies some of the building blocks of the proteins involved with bacteria. The immune system may be in charge of the goodness or badness that comes as a consequence. Our immune system may react differently depending on the medicine that will be given to a person. Food Recommendation Avoid foods which contain preservatives and emulsifiers and those that come farther than the source. Avoid foods with pesticides, herbicides and fungicides. These chemicals can be poisonous to your microbiome gut citizens. Try the Mediterranean, Nordic or Japanese diet. Eat whole foods and whole grains. Have as much fibrous food as possible. Marie-Louise Muir tells the story of the Nun Study; a pioneering study, started in America in the 1980s, which brought a young epidemiologist together with a group of Catholic Sisters to examine the mysteries of ageing and Alzheimer’s. In 1986 Dr David Snowdon approached the sisters at the convent of the School Sisters of Notre Dame in Minnesota. An order of Catholic sisters with their uniform life-styles were perfect for an examination of the ageing process. It was the beginning of a study which experts still consider to be one of the most innovative efforts to answer questions about who gets Alzheimer's disease and why. An unlikely friendship developed between Snowdon and the sisters. Some of the nuns recall how they would look forward to the annual cognitive and memory tests. "We cared about Dr Snowdon and he cared about us", says one of the nuns. "He would walk with us and talk with us and we looked forward to his visits." A breakthrough came when the Snowdon team came across a filing cabinet full of diaries written by the sisters when they’d entered the order. The team worked out that those sisters who used more complex sentences and ideas were less likely to develop Alzheimer’s later on. As they died, the brain of each sister was analysed for further information and these samples are now stored at the University of Minnesota along with the brains of other sisters who have continued to participate in this extraordinary longitudinal study. We hear the voices of some of the original Snowdon team as well as neurologists working in the field of Alzheimer’s and some of the nuns themselves.
