Using lasers and ultrasound, the ‘cytophone' detects a key byproduct of all malaria parasites. Transcript Among the most commonly used malaria diagnostic tests is the rapid diagnostic test (RDT), which detects malaria antigens from a drop of blood. Whilst RDTs are small and cheap, they're invasive and new strains of the parasite have evolved that can escape RDT diagnosis. Now, engineers have developed new diagnostic technology – a cytophone – which doesn't require a blood draw. About the size of a desktop printer, the cytophone uses lasers and ultrasound to detect infected red blood cells in the vein on a patient's hand or forearm. The cytophone works by detecting hemozoin, a byproduct of all malaria parasites from their consumption of hemoglobin for energy. When hemozoin absorbs a certain amount of the laser energy, it heats up and expands, generating ultrasound waves that indicate malaria infection within the red blood cell. In a trial of 20 adults in Cameroon with symptomatic malaria, the cytophone prototype performed as well as current point-of-care diagnostic methods. In this episode of the Prime Podcast, hosts Dr. Skip and Dr. Julie Wyss discuss the importance of chiropractic care and milestones for babies, emphasizing how common issues like colic and ear infections are normalized despite not being healthy. They focus on the impact of stress on a newborn's development, the importance of skin-to-skin contact for regulating heart rate and breathing, and advocating for optimal APGAR scores to assess a baby's well-being post-birth. The Weisses highlight the significance of breastfeeding for neurological development and the necessity of ensuring a baby's nervous system functions without interference, promoting a thriving child instead of merely surviving. 00:00 Introduction: The Reality of Grumpy Babies 01:18 Welcome to the Podcast 01:43 The Importance of Chiropractic Care for Babies 03:59 Understanding Baby's Stress and Reflexes 06:35 The Critical Role of Skin-to-Skin Contact 08:17 APGAR Scores and Birth Trauma 11:46 Breastfeeding Challenges and Solutions 19:04 The Impact of Stress on Developmental Milestones 22:03 Breaking the Cycle for a Healthier Future 23:02 Conclusion and Call to Action https://theprimepediatricpodcast.libsyn.com =============================================== Order Standard Process Here: https://primefamilycenters.standardprocess.com ================================= Download our App Here: Apple Play Store: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/prime-family-chiropractic-app/id6474149243 Android: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ub378e75245a.app&pcampaignid=web_share ================================= Please like, subscribe, comment, and share this video! //Dr. Julie Wyss - Prime Family Chiropractic Centers// Dr. Julie Wyss DC is a highly respected chiropractor with a special focus on pediatric and pregnancy care. This is part 3 of my skin-to-skin series where we address the importance of getting babies skin-to-skin on mothers and stressing how critical this life-saving care is. Today Kate a nurse practitioner gives us some insight into what she's learned about having babies skin-to-skin on mom during a c-section. Kate (Katherine Chokan, DNP (Doctorate of Nursing), BSN, RN ) has been a maternity nurse (Labor and Postpartum) for 6.5 years. She recently graduated from a Nurse Practitioner program in December where she conducted a doctoral research project. The project was a quality improvement initiative to implement Kangaroo Care in the OR after C-section. She will be advancing her nursing career as a Family Nurse Practitioner starting in March. She has a 2.5-year-old son. She and her husband have enjoyed traveling and exploring around Cleveland trying to instill adventure in their son and explore the world through his perspective. Proposal to Sanction Countries Disobeying WHO Pandemic Response Rules Concerning Failure to cooperate with the World Health Organization (WHO) during a pandemic should prompt sanctions on a country, some officials and experts are proposing. They point to China's failure to share early information and fully cooperate with investigating the origins of the COVID-19 pandemic. Others, however, have sounded the alarm about giving the WHO too much power at the expense of national sovereignty. Some public officials, prominently German Health Minister Jens Spahn, proposed that countries that fail to follow up on their commitments to the WHO should face sanctions. WHO head Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said that “maybe exploring the sanctions may be important.” Pfizer to seek COVID booster for healthy 5- to 11-year-olds German Insurer Warns: “More Vaccine Side Effects Than Previously Known” A board member of German insurer BKK ProVita recently had analyzed the data of millions of insured individuals of the BKK group. The results conclude that the number of COVID-19 “vaccine” side effects is much higher than is being reported by the German federal agency and medical regulatory body, the Paul Ehrlich Institute (PEI). According to BKK board member Andreas Schöfbeck, the new data is an “alarm signal.” He highlighted on Wednesday that “the figures determined are significant and urgently need to be checked for plausibility.” Noting the importance of the potential findings, he added: “The numbers that resulted from our analysis are very far away from the publicly announced numbers. It would be ethically wrong not to talk about it.” The result: From the beginning of 2021 to the middle of the third quarter, 216,695 BKK policyholders were treated for vaccine side effects. Seven thousand six hundred sixty-five (7,665) cases of complications from other vaccines were excluded. The statistics did not include any multiple treatments of insured persons—they calculated one per patient. Extrapolated to the number of vaccinated people in Germany, this means that around 4-5% of the vaccinated people were in medical treatment because of vaccination side effects. Teresa LW and Inderjeet Kaur, Fernandez Foundation, India The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends Delayed umbilical cord clamping (not earlier than 1 min after birth) for improved maternal and infant health and nutrition outcomes. The aim of this paper is to investigate the effect of delayed vs early cord clamping on breast feeding and skin to skin contact rates. Retrospective data collection of six-month data from 1741 mothers who birthed at Fernandez hospital is analysed from July 2020 to December 2020. The analysis shows that 292(17%) mothers had early cord clamping soon after birth of the baby followed by 1449(83%) had delayed Cord Clamping. The breast feeding and skin-to-skin contact rates were high among the mothers who had delayed cord clamping. We recommend delayed cord clamping for all births irrespective of the mode of delivery unless there is an indication to separate the mother and baby.
After birth became medicalized, skin-to-skin care was assumed to be optional, irrelevant, or unimportant. But in truth, the skin-to-skin contact between the newborn, the mother and—yes, the father—is a critical component of the transition to extrauterine life for the baby, and the transformation of individuals into family units. Join Marie and her special guest, Nils Bergman, MB ChB, MPH, MD, as they discuss the “NurtureScience” to support the initiation and continuation of prolonged skin-to-skin contact. How and why does this critical period have a profound and life-long impact on the newborn? How long should skin-to-skin contact (aka kangaroo mother care) last? How do birth practices, especially skin-to-skin (or lack thereof) affect hormones, sensory stimuli, the limbic brain, and emotions? What is the effect of labor inductions? Whether you are the parent, the healthcare professional, or the “kangaroula”, you can create a transformational experience for the new family.
Episode 6. This episode tastes like something that's at the tip of your tongue. It looks like another skin contact, but this one we're enjoying more than last episode. This episode looks like a star seen from a space hotel. Tastes like your grandma's favorite white wine, but in the best way. Smells like the shores of southeast France, or southwest Spain, or what is southeast Spain? *shrugs in Sommelier* Anthony and Fiona drink a skin contact from Argentina that they bought at The Heights Deli & Bottleshop in Lincoln Heights. The Beat podcast is designed for healthcare professionals and is brought to you by Nutricia. Skin-to-skin contact (SSC) straight after birth can naturally regulate a baby's temperature, heart rate and breathing, as well as elevate their blood sugar, which is essential for their energy supplies. The power of this bonding moment is remarkable but this natural act is often only reserved for new mum's straight after birth, because of the breastfeeding benefits it delivers and the connection it can help establish between mother and baby. In the latest episode of The Beat podcast, Avril, a Midwife, Childbirth Educator and Hypnobirthing practitioner, talks to a father of an seven month old baby about the wider benefits of SSC; including how SSC can help an infant's gut microbiome and immune system, and why all parents and caregivers should be encouraged to have SSC time with their newborn, at the hospital and at home.
In this episode, our hosts are joined by Allison C. Komiyama, Ph.D., R.A.C., Owner and Consultant at AcKnowledge Regulatory Strategies and former U.S. FDA reviewer, to discuss the U.S. FDA’s latest draft guidance, “Select Updates for Biocompatibility of Certain Devices in Contact with Intact Skin.” The FDA has determined the biocompatibility risk of various polymers and fabrics to be low based upon a safe history of use in medical devices for this categorization. Our hosts dive into the list of materials as well as the nuances of this guidance that will ideally help manufacturers with these types of devices receive market access with fewer questions. “There might be some unnecessary testing going on in some cases.” –Don Pohl “The long history of safe use. U.S. FDA uses a lot of resources to not only review the tests themselves, but they mention they spend resources on review of rationale and justifications; and I think that may be harder than reviewing test reports.” – Allison Komiyama “It was very exciting when we saw this guidance document. We all felt like this was a long time coming.” – Allison Komiyama “Class VI testing might become useful again.” – Sheri Krajewski-Bibins “People are going to be googling Type 4 Sensitivity to figure out what that is because its sitting on a label.” – Don Pohl “I commend the biocomp group on this document.” – Allison Komiyama “I was thinking about a device I’m reviewing right now. I look back at that device and it has stainless steel and aluminum, and if I look at all those polymers, I have co-polymers as well. If I look at this guidance now, I would be left wondering if I can apply everything here or am I going to have to do cyto, sensitization and irritation because I have metals and some co-polymers that aren’t necessarily defined.” – Don Pohl “Guidance is U.S. FDA’s current thinking, and even if it is a draft, we’ve had many reviewers say “there’s a new draft guidance, look at that”.” –Allison Komiyama Discussion points include: Complete overview of the guidance and implementation Inclusions and exclusions for materials and devices Submission guidelines when applying this guidance Information needed to submit for these types of devices immediately Precautionary labeling instructions that may be necessary
No matter what type of birth you have, the most important thing after your baby is born is that you get skin to skin with your baby. Skin to skin means that your baby is not swaddled or clothed, and their bare skin is placed belly down against your bare chest. Being skin to skin stabilizes your baby's heart rate, breathing, and temperature, and reduces stress in both you and your baby. It also increases your interactions with your baby and increases the likelihood and length of breastfeeding. This episode dives into the evidence on skin to skin contact with your baby after birth, the logistics of how it works with any birth, and tips for your partner. Grant didn’t have a good weekend. Or, well, maybe he did. Frozen pizzas are briefly discussed, and a revelation about food temperature is had.Mark brought a Spot the Frog comic. Grant doesn’t spot the toad, but does solve the logic problem. He has a pretty lukewarm relationship with those amphibians anyway.Grant brought a Lola comic. Once again ignoring his place in the podcast, he tries to have a serious conversation about honesty. Always up for a challenge, Mark takes it seriously.Send feedback to comicalstart@gmail.com.

Picture the moment your baby is born. The umbilical cord is still connected on one end to your baby, and on the other end to your placenta, which is still attached to your uterine wall. Essentially, your baby is limited in how far they can go from your vagina because they are tethered by the umbilical cord. You want to delay clamping of the cord, but, you want to get skin-to-skin right away. This episode breaks down the logistics and timing of how immediate skin-to-skin contact and delayed cord clamping can work together. You can read the full article and resources that accompany this episode by clicking here. For more evidence-based information visit the Pregnancy Podcast website.
Join the ladies for the first of a series of "skin contact" episodes that explore white grape varieties that have been fermented with their own grape skins. Reminder: you can tune into video content on YouTube. In this first episode the ladies planned on just doing skin contact aromatics but after both bringing a muscat blend (I'm sure everyone is shocked that the resident Gewürztramonster didn't feed her obsession), it's opened up an interesting opportunity to explore variations on this same subject! This week's wines: 2016, Jasse, Domaine Gauby - Roussillon, France 2018, Tragolargo Blanco, Vinessens - Alicante, Spain

Adam and MAR drink Alessandro Viola’s “Sinfonia di Grillo” while talking about one of the natural wine world’s brightest stars: Orange wine. They’ll take you through how it’s made, what gives it that bright orange color, and how MAR’s campaign to call it “skin-contact” has pretty much failed. Natural Disasters is powered by Simplecast.
We tackle a wine style that is adored in certain hip, wine "in-crowd" circles: "orange" wine, which is actually white wine made like a red -- there is long contact with the skins and seeds that give the wine a darker, orange-ish color, and VERY different flavors. M.C. Ice and I are not big fans, but we do our best to explain the phenomenon of these whites made with skin contact. Here are the show notes: You know it's time to cover a topic when, in Europe, the supermarket chain Aldi sells a bottle of skin-contact wine for less than $8 US! WHAT THE HECK IS ORANGE WINE?? First and most importantly, it's not from oranges but from grapes! Made exactly like a red but with longer maceration (the time during winemakig when the grape skins and seeds stay in contact with the juice) Reds with skin contact are red wines, reds with little contact are rosés; whites with skin contact are “orange”, without contact they are whites Rosés usually undergo less than 12 hours macerating on their skins before the juice is pressed off Orange wine is the opposite of Rosé Can make skin-contact wine from any grape – length of time with the skins will matter to flavor and the longer the time the more likely the wine is to mask terroir Length of time varies, but maceration is LONG – days, weeks, months Not all are orange so it’s better to call them “skin-contact wines.” WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF MACERATING WHITE JUICE WITH SKINS? The wine takes on a darker colored/orange-ish white color, as well as phenols, pigment. Aromas: Bolder and more intense same grapes vinified as traditional white – like rose v red Flavors: Nutty, oxidized flavor, very sour with a cider note. Can be bold, nutty, like old apples, sourdough bread Textures: Dry, tannic, intense (not very pleasurable sometimes) Different styles: Lightest ones, are acidic, aromatic wines, with fresh apricot, herbs Medium ones – slight oxidation, some acetone notes, old apple Then full-bodied, boldly tannic, and often smoky, nutty, lots of VA, off notes Regions: The Republic of Georgia: Qvervi—underground vessels sealed with beeswax or oil soaked clothes. The practice of skin contact whites likely originated here 6,000 or more years ago (the practice still goes on today, although the Greeks and Romans quickly realized the best wines were those from free-run juice/whites not macerated, which is our "traditional" style today). Rkatsiteli is the main grape Listen to the Georgia Podcast! Italy: Most prominent in Friuli-Venezia Giulia, often called ramato “copper-colored” wines from Pinot Grigio but Ribolla Gialla and Tocai Friulano are often used. Fruili producers who re-started the orange wine movement: Radikon, Gravner Sicilian producers: Cos, I Vigneri Slovenia: Goriska Brda in Slovenia has a long history of skin contact wine Listen to the Slovenia show! United States Long Island: Channing Daughters, Shinn Estate California: Some Sonoma Others: Australia – Sauvignon Blanc, Greece, South Africa, Croatia, France Food Pairing: Skin Contact wine is versatile with food pairing but it depends on the weight and the treatment of the wine (length of maceration, barrel v. stainless steel, etc).
This is the episode of genuine focus. We are joined by Head Sommelier Antonio Palmarini who comes from the Abruzzo region in Italy. Learn all about the region, the grapes ( oh there are so many grapes ), the struggles and where Abruzzo is heading. We taste some absolutely cracking wines: Collepietro Passarina 2016 by Faraone (exactly! What?), and two Montepulciano d’Abruzzos, one which is made entirely naturally: Senzaniente and the other 2013 by the legendary producer Emidio Pepe. Somehow we still managed to squeeze in the typical nonsense. Jonathan gets very opinionated about religion and the use of donations towards Notre Dame. On a lighter side, he is shamelessly plugging his new project: Sommelier socks! Who wants some? So sit back with a glass of wine and enjoy your first real wine nerdy episode.
Join Emily, Guen and Thor Gudmundsson of the Wine rooms London in Emily's kitchen as they chat about, and try a couple of orange wines. hen a baby is first born, men often indicate that they don't feel very close to the baby. Although mom's carry the child for 9 months, feel it kicking and turning inside of them so the relationship foundation begins much earlier. I know with my first child I struggled to feel that bond right away. I certainly loved my child, but the deep emotional connection was not as strong as my wife's. I think this is a common issue with men. So for this podcast, we are providing some tips on how dads can increase their bond with the baby. As you can probably imagine, all of the tips pretty much have to do with spending more time with the child. Here are 9 tips for you to get closer and bond with your baby: 1) Skin to Skin Contact - take your shirt off and lay the baby down on your chest 2) Feed the child - take the feedings in the middle or anytime you can. If your wife is breastfeeding and you have a pump, you can then do the feeding from the bottle. 3) Bath the child - most babies love bath time. I know both of my kids did. Splashing in water and playing with toys was a good time from the beginning. 4) Read to the child - Whether it's some random time or part of the bedtime routine, them hearing your voice is important. It's ok even if they are clueless and have no idea what you are saying. There are books that allow children to squeeze, bite, and pull on them and they don't rip. 5) Change diapers - I once had a guy tell me that he had 4 grown kids and was proud that he never changed a single diaper. I personally wouldn't be proud of that. 6) Baby massage - Touch is really good for a baby. There skin is so soft too. My children to this day still love getting any massage they can get. 7) Make silly faces and noises - Men are tpyically good at voices and doing silly things. There is nothing better than a baby's laugh. Heck, billions of YouTube views are dedicated to babies laughing. 8) Pick the baby up with it cries. Even if the baby prefers mommy, continue to do so 9) Spend alone time without your wife - If your wife is the primary caregiver, tell her to go somewhere and you spend the time alone with the child. It gives her a break but also allows you to spend quality time with your child one-one-one. There is no mommy in the distance that the baby can see.
