On this episode of Taste Buds with Deb, host Debra Eckerling speaks with Shari Foos, founder of The Narrative Method. The nonprofit addresses the crisis of loneliness by connecting people to their stories and creative expression.    Now in its tenth year, The Narrative Method offers free online salons, interviews with interesting people, programs for communities in need, and more. One of the events they offer is called the library dinner, which can happen at a library, in a public space or at someone's home.    “Everyone meets at this space and goes away for one hour and learns something, anything,” therapist Foos, MA/MFT/MS, explains. “[Then] everyone has a lovely dinner and goes around and shares what they've learned; it's a fascinating experience of just exchanging what seems to be impromptu knowledge and information.”    Foos, a former punk rock musician, radio and TV writer, comedian, university professor and co-founder of IKAR-LA, adds, “It's really fun, and it's a great way for people to get to know each other on a whole other level."     “I love what meals do,” she says. “Enjoying [food and conversations] with other people… is such a thrill.”   Foos talks about her connection to cooking and food, as well as the Library Dinner experience and how to curate your own. She also shares the recipe for Cinnamon Surprise Cake, which her son and his cousin created in 2001; they were six and seven at the time. This inexact recipe, which you can find at JewishJournal.com/podcasts, really illustrates the joy and creativity that can go into cooking and baking.   Learn more about Shari Foos and sign up for the programs at TheNarrativeMethod.org and follow @TheNarrativeMethod.com on Instagram. For more from Taste Buds, subscribe on iTunes and YouTube, and follow @TheDEBMethod on social media.

This week, I talk to my good friend of nearly a decade, author Katie Horwitch. We reminisce about our years of friendship, both moving to New York, and the evolving nature of relationships with distance. Our conversation also delves into the celebration of her new book and exploring her writing process. With a background in theater, Katie has long been an advocate for helping women shift negative self-talk patterns, a theme central to her book. She emphasizes the importance of beginning with the "self" rather than the "talk" when trying to shift negative internal dialog. In this episode, we explore why developing a stronger sense of self is the initial step to shifting negative self-talk. Additionally, we touch on Katie's insights into loneliness, belonging, casual negativity, prioritization, coping with overwhelm, distilling a project down to a concise thesis, and energy management. In today's episode of the In the Lead Show, I have a conversation with Shari Foos, founder of the Narrative Method. We're all susceptible to a certain amount of influence that can negatively shift our self-perspective and our perspective of dissimilar cultures and people both near and far. Whether those influences come from our own community, popular culture, or artificial intelligence online, there's little we can do to avoid it. Shari's passion and mission with The Narrative Method is to help peel away participants' false assumptions and beliefs to help them refocus their perspectives and understanding. Through the modality of storytelling and a practice called “relational mindfulness,” participants are able to develop radical empathy, compassion, and understanding for those around them. What does it take to be an effective leader despite the overwhelming challenges the world gives us? Welcome to another mashup, where we bring together some of the best critical points brought by my guests.  In today's episode, we feature the answers of Shari Foos and Dr. Sean Hall. Listen in as they answer the questions - Who is your favorite leader and why? What does leadership change? In this episode: Shari Foos discusses how Nelson Mandela did the impossible and how creating the foundation of faith and trust is essential. Despite our differences, there are ways to appreciate other human beings and uphold the virtue of humanity in whatever we do. Shari shares her thoughts on the origins of having the feeling of defensiveness and feeling not good enough. Dr. Sean Hall tackles his many favorite leaders. He believes that each leader can teach you specific lessons. Sometimes, a fresh set of eyes can give the feedback you need. That can be more valuable than anything else. Despite hurdles such as COVID-19, leaders must determine how to remain agile and refrain from giving excuses. Key Takeaways: The notion of power and influence goes beyond motivation Everyone has empathy, and we must use and receive it To feel one's strength, the vulnerable side should be acknowledged  The guilt and shame you are feeling may not be yours The journey to authentic leadership is deep and meaningful Aggressively step forward despite hurdles to pivot Tweetable Quotes: "The whole notion about what is power, what is a positive influence, what gets us motivated and going, is now coming from a far more sophisticated understanding not just of what motivates us, but of what it means to be human.”  - Shari Foos “If you want to lead, people need to believe in you. That hand is kind of the most grown up and that part of you is telling your fears, your worries, it's cool, don't worry. But from the inside, you feel that pressure and you can relax. Because it is a way to signal to your unconscious. The way you know your mom or your dad or someone who loved you may have loved would say, it's okay. You don't have to worry and it can calm you down really fast.

As a sought-after expert on the subjects of relationships and meaningful connections, Shari's writing and commentary have appeared in a range of online and print publications.  In this episode, Shari talks about The Narrative Method and how it's helping leaders today embrace our differences through sharing our stories.  Jump right into this powerful interview, and let's explore how to embrace diversity.  On this episode: Shari gives her background and how connection is, ultimately, what brings meaning to our lives.  Shari talks about networking and going from a "what you can do for me" mentality to understanding the importance and power of relationships.  What is the Narrative Method? Shari talks about her programs that connect people by sharing their lives' stories and how this level of vulnerability is impacting leaders today. Shari talks about the power of humor and how it can break negative thought loops that block us from moving forward. Take a bigger perspective of your mistakes and the mistakes of others.  It's time for things to become more human, open-minded, and more genius than ever before. If we could only embrace our differences, we could see innovation exponentially. There is a cultural shift people are going through to find meaning and purpose in their work. Shari breaks down how you can begin to find your purpose and what happens when you embrace new ideologies and methodologies.  Key Takeaways: Connection brings meaning to our lives  Networking is tapping into the power of relationships Sharing your story is a way to upgrade and reboot Being authentic is the gateway to building love Everyone has some level of empathy; we can inspire each other Embrace diversity of ideology to dream up a better future Tweetable Quotes: "We've all been programmed to think that it's not really safe to be who you are… You're restricting your ideas and your creativity. Those things do take a risk, and that risk is tied up in your vulnerability, and your vulnerability is tied up in your defenses." - Shari Foos "Every time you tie the not on tiny hanging pieces from old stories, there's a part of you that's got more clarity, and you have more space to do new things." - Shari Foos "I hope that more people embrace diversity… and thinking, not just how we can use the tools that we have, but dreaming about a better future, and creating tools based on those dreams." - Shari Foos Connect with Shari on https://www.linkedin.com/in/shari-foos-7b083214/ (LinkedIn), https://www.instagram.com/thenarrativemethod/?hl=en (Instagram), and https://twitter.com/narrativemethod?lang=en (Twitter). Find out what happens when we mix Executive Presence with Relational Mindfulness! Our guest: Shari Foos Shari Foos is a Marriage and Family Therapist, adjunct professor, writer and improvisational artist. After twenty years of private practice, she wanted to address the growing isolation and need for real connection in an increasingly technological world. While one-on-one therapy and counseling offer profound help, only groups can provide the sense of empowerment and belonging within a family or community. So in 2013, she founded The Narrative Method, a 501C3 with the mission to create group programs in which participants could see themselves in each other's stories, increasing empathy and mutual understanding. The effectiveness of hundreds of transformative workshops with at-risk populations including veterans, youth and disenfranchised women, was proven in a study by California State Northridge. “It's a profound thing to offer an apology. An apology is not dependent on forgiveness and has no excuses. An apology is me humbly coming to you and saying, “Oh, I see that I've hurt you; that I was inappropriate in some way.” And by the way, I may not have intended to hurt you. I may not even agree that it was something for which you should feel hurt. But that's not the concern of the apology. The apology is merely recognizing that you feel hurt based on something I did or said. I want to own own your pain, and apologize for it” - Shari Foos  To kick things off this year, we have with us Shari Foos, Marriage and Family Therapist and founder of The Narrative Method.  Shari's point of view on inclusion was honed while studying Narrative Medicine at Columbia University. The program was conceived as a way to teach empathy to doctors. “There was a huge perspective about social justice, and what does it mean for someone to speak for a patient and you can extrapolate that to what does it mean for anyone to tell someone else's story. And so I have always been a big fan of the group process since I was a teenager, when I was depressed and found myself in group therapy. And what was so powerful that and I see to this day is that as important as one-on-one relationships are, they cannot simulate a good family the way a group can. And when everyone is nodding, because they understand what you're saying, you feel normal, you feel good, you feel you belong. So that's why I decided to take all of the work I had done, and create a group process where people could have meaningful conversations, without small talk, based on inspirational art, or videos or music or something that evokes a prompt, and then they'll go into smaller groups and discuss those prompts. Or in the case of writing groups, they write about them.” - Shari Foos  Here's some of what Susan and Rohini discuss with Shari “We're natural storytellers, based on the professional lines that we have chosen (as marketers and PR leaders), but our ‘why' came from a personal and painful experience and the urge to make sure that doesn't happen to somebody else, or the urge, perhaps for somebody else to learn from the hard soul searching work that we had done”  - Rohini Mukherji 3:53   “What Shari said about that “squeaky wheel” kid usually being the creative kid stood out for me. I have a 10 year old daughter and she's definitely curious and challenging. She's very, very creative. I say often, well you're lucky, you're in the right place to be that squeaky wheel. I'm listening closely because I want to encourage that creativity. Because for me, the environment was much more “Don't ask too many questions. Be seen and not heard.” The person who's telling a story is being brave. How do we make make them more comfortable?” -Susan Diaz  8:03  For that and more on empathy, apologies, creating safe spaces. In the spur of the moment, a simple argument can go out of hand if we focus on proving that we are right rather than seeking to understand our partner's emotional needs. We basically just listen so we can rebut. Whilst it does seem to be clever, it is not the same as understanding. So, what can we do to change that? Shari Foos dives into what Relational Mindfulness is and how we can apply it to create meaningful connections in both romantic and non-romantic relationships.  Shari Foos is a licensed marriage and family therapist and creator of The Narrative Method. She holds an MA in clinical psychology from Antioch University, Los Angeles, and a Master's in Science in Narrative Medicine from Columbia University.  A sought-after expert on the subject of relationship and meaningful connection, Foos' writing and commentary have appeared in a range of online and print publications including Real Simple, Huffington Post, Women's Health, KBLA, Fatherly, LA Weekly, and Bustle. Shari Foos is a Marriage and Family Therapist and the founder of  The Narrative Method. She and I have a vulnerable and lively discussion about our shared experiences as therapists, children with trauma, storytellers, and humorists. Shari's work is fascinating and in complete alignment with my philosophy and passions. This was a thrill for me to connect with another human on such a deep level.  In this episode, you will learn about the power of a story from a new perspective. Shari first explains the difference between Narrative Therapy, Narrative Method, and Narrative Medicine, all of which are steeped in the values of storytelling, empathy, and inclusion.  We then talked about our traumatic upbringings and how we used humor to heal and how we now lead with vulnerability to connect with others. As humans, we have a desire to be known. If we mask or armor up and never show our authentic selves, we can not be fully known or loved, and we will thus feel alone. Share your pain and joys.
