Hey there, hero!So you want to try something new, or do something you've never done before, or finally get off your keester and create the first of something. You might not realize how infinitely powerful that action is.And I do mean infinite. I checked, and did so with people who are better at math than I am.There's a concept called “delta.” The delta of something is the difference between two approaches: if something is twice as good as something else, than the delta is 100%, or two times.Pretty obvious. But what's the delta between doing something new and not doing anything at all?Yeah. Infinite. Let's unpack that in this episode. How powerful do you feel when you're finished taking that first step? How hard is it for you to take that first step at all? Would knowing what a profound change you can create by “just doing it” help you “just do it?” Let me know in the comments below.REQUEST: Please join this video's conversation and see the full episode on VOHeroes, where the comments are moderated and civil, at https://voheroes.com/the-simple-math-around-taking-a-shot/#Acting #Voice #VoiceOver #Performance #Productivity #Tips #Art #Commerce #Science #Mindset #Success #Process #Options #BestPractices #MarketingWant to be a better VO talent, actor or author? In this episode of the Sunlight Tax podcast, I talk about something that can feel overwhelming for a lot of us: taxes and bookkeeping, especially if you're a self-employed person. I share why having a positive mindset around money stuff really matters and how it can actually make tax season a lot less stressful. I also introduce my new workbook, which is designed to help you move past some of those mindset blocks that can make dealing with taxes feel so heavy. Throughout our chat, I offer practical tips, like why it's so important to have a separate bank account for your business, and how setting up just a few basic expense categories can make a big difference in staying organized. Join me in this episode and feel empowered to take small, proactive steps with your finances so you can ditch the stress and focus on the creative work you love. Also mentioned in today's episode: 03:22 The Importance of Bookkeeping 07:13 Setting Up for Success: Business Bank Accounts 09:57 Mid-Year Check-In and Action Steps Takeaways The mindset around taxes can significantly impact financial management. Bookkeeping should be done consistently throughout the year. Procrastination in bookkeeping leads to increased stress at tax time. Having a separate business bank account simplifies financial tracking. Every transaction needs to be categorized for accurate tax reporting. Doing any bookkeeping now reduces work at tax time. Mid-year is a great time to assess your financial organization. Setting up expense categories can be done easily with a spreadsheet. A visual guide to tax deductions can help streamline the process. Taking small steps now can lead to greater financial peace later. If you enjoyed this episode, please rate, review and share it! If we think about the economic effects of President Donald Trumps big taxing and spending and domestic policy bill, we can roughly sum it up in one line. It goes something like this: We will make many big tax cuts permanent and pay for those tax cuts by cutting Medicaid and a few other things and also...by borrowing money. A lot of money. Even more than we've already been borrowing over the past twenty years. (And that was already a lot, too!) Today: simple arithmetic with profound ramifications. Tax cuts, spending cuts, and whether they balance out. (Spoiler: no.) We look under the hood to see how all this is calculated. And we ask: how will a bigger deficit play out for all of us, in our normal, regular lives? We've covered a bunch more having to do with the big taxing and spending bill and the federal debt recently on Planet Money and our short daily show The Indicator: - So, how's this No Tax On Tips thing gonna go? - A thought experiment on how to fix the national debt problem - The paperwork trap: A sneaky way to cut Medicaid in the 'One Big Beautiful Bill'? - The debt limit, the origins of the X Date, and why it all matters - What's a revenge tax? - Is the federal debt REALLY that bad?Support Planet Money, get bonus episodes and sponsor-free listening and now Summer School episodes one week early by subscribing to Planet Money+ in Apple Podcasts or at plus.npr.org/planetmoney.Listen free at these links: Apple Podcasts, Spotify, the NPR app or anywhere you get podcasts.Learn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy

Before you hire, launch, or invest, there's one number you need to know: your future break-even point. It's more than a “boring” accounting term; it's one of the most powerful tools you have in your toolkit as a business owner and CEO. In this episode, Danielle Hayden, reformed corporate CFO and CEO of Kickstart Accounting, Inc., flips the script on how entrepreneurs look at their break-even point by turning it from a financial checkmark into a forward-thinking strategy tool. She walks through how to use it as a launchpad for smarter decisions and puts you in control of your numbers. Key Takeaways: Break-Even as a Planning Tool: Knowing your break-even point helps you look forward, not backward, and make strategic choices with confidence. Know Your Break-Even Before Big Decisions: Calculate how your expenses will change first and then what new revenue you'll need to cover them. Turn Your New Break-Even into Your Revenue Goal: Add a 10–15% profit margin to your break-even number to set a clear, sustainable monthly revenue target. Create a Margin of Safety: If you're not ready to make a leap, build savings in advance so you're financially prepared to take on new expenses with confidence. Numbers Beat Guesswork Every Time: Ditch the gut-based decisions and use this method to plan investments without fear or uncertainty. Higher education is facing a perilous metaphor. It is approaching a demographic cliff, a precipitous decline in student population that could have devastating consequences for the higher ed ecosystem. Recent studies chide higher education for not responding to a change that has been projected for some time, and that apparently comes as a shock to many institutions. In this episode I'll explain how simple math could have mitigated the effects of this phenomenon and ask what higher ed has done, or not done, to avoid what is coming. More on dividend growth investing -> Join our market newsletter! The last time the S&P 500 dividend yield was sitting at 1.17% was in February of 2001. Many investors remember the stretched valuations 23 years ago, and even more so, how the following year proved to correct that exuberance. While stock prices are currently hovering around all-time highs, us dividend growth investors targeting a yield of 2.5-3% may find challenges in this environment.Given this, and the uncertainty surrounding the recent presidential election, Greg spends episode 41 reviewing the foundational pillars behind our investment strategy. Even with low yields, the next 10 years of performance can be boiled down to relatively simple math. As GDP expands, corporate earnings grow, which in turn gives investors increasing dividend checks. Through several illustrations of what that looks like in your portfolio, Greg concludes that the dividend growth strategy is alive and well. There are companies out there called “emergency response” or “water restoration” companies. These companies will come to you when you have a leak to dry it out. The problem is mold takes just 24-48 hours to grow. So if you do the math, by the time you call the company, and they actually get the building materials dry, 48 hours almost always passes. This means you now have a 70-80% chance of mold growth in those areas. I don't really how how emergency response drying companies are able to get away with this without making sure there isn't a mold problem, but it happens all the time, even though their Industry Standard (IICRC S500) specifically tells them that it shouldn't! Listen to hear how you can avoid this, or to help jog your memory of areas in your house that have been professionally dried, but where there may still be mold problems as a result. Enjoy!
