Skating Polly - "Hickey King" from the 2023 album Chaos County Line on El Camino Media Tacoma-based punk-pop trio Skating Polly describes today's Song of the Day as "the most Skating Polly song" on their latest LP, a double-album titled Chaos County Line, out now via El Camino Media. Songwriters (and step-sisters!) Kelli Mayo and Peyton Bighorse trade off vocals on the stripped-down single, inspired by a bad date Kelli went on. “In Peyton's verse she's talking about never knowing how far to go or how much of yourself to give to someone, and when my part comes crashing in it's about guys being possessive and always trying to leave their mark on you,” Kelli says in a press release. “To me, it's the most Skating Polly song on the record because it's all these different energies happening at once.” Read the full story at KEXP.orgSupport the show: https://www.kexp.org/donateSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

A (very) brief history of Holly Golightly A (very) brief history of Jerry Lee Lewis (and Mercury Records was correct) A (very) brief recap of Blobfest And a science lesson or two A bit of a peek behind the curtain here. When I (Lou) perform my editing sweep of the audio, I typically take some notes so I can construct some semblance of a summary. And sometimes those notes gel, and sometimes they don't. And sometimes….like this time….they don't really make much sense. Podcast #655 spins the tunes you need to hear from Ian Hunter, The Particles, Jeanines, Skating Polly, Taxi Girls, Don't Sleep, Carissa Johnson, Militarie Gun, & Mountain Goats.
This week we welcome to the podcast Peyton Bighorse from the self proclaimed "ugly pop" trio Skating Polly who introduces us to her 6 year old Chihuahua Georgie. Skating Polly's new 18-song double album Chaos County Line was released on June 23rd and they are currently on tour through July 16th. Visit skatingpolly.com to keep up with the band.
We had the pleasure of interviewing Skating Polly over Zoom video! Skating Polly share “I'm Sorry For Always Apologizing” – a deceptively joyous rock song that is accompanied by the official music video directed by Christian Papierniak. The multiple award-winning director, producer, and writer best known for his hit Indie feature film Izzy Gets the F*ck Across Town brings the track to life with a humorous touch.“I'm Sorry For Always Apologizing” follows the raucous single “Hickey King” and is the second track to be taken from Skating Polly's new album Chaos County Line, which is set for release on June 23rd via El Camino Media. “Doctors don't think I'm sick / Just a self important prick” Kelli Mayo sings sweetly, sending up her past relationship mistakes with a cutting sense of self-judgement."This song has some of my favorite lyrics on the record" Kelli comments. "It was originally inspired by my very real habit of over apologizing, then the concept came to me to write it from a perspective of constantly hurting someone you're wildly in love with, which is a feeling I unfortunately know all too well. So, some of it is definitely hyperbole, but some of it is about my short-lived love affair with the bass player from Starcrawler. And the super huge prick I make myself out to be as the narrator is my big fear of how I must've come across to him and is also a furthering of many apologies I've given him on the matter..."Over the past decade, few artists have embodied the unbridled freedom of punk like Skating Polly. Formed when stepsisters Kelli Mayo and Peyton Bighorse were just 9 and 14, the band have channeled their chameleonic musicality into a sound they call “Ugly Pop,” unruly and subversive and wildly melodic. With Kelli's brother Kurtis Mayo joining on drums in 2017, they've also built a close-knit community of fans while earning the admiration of their musical forebears, a feat that's found them collaborating with icons like X's Exene Cervenka and Beat Happening's Calvin Johnson, touring with Babes In Toyland, and starring as the subject of a feature-length documentary. On their forthcoming double album Chaos County Line, Skating Polly reach a whole new level of self-possession, ultimately sharing their most expansive and emotionally powerful work to date. The follow-up to 2018's The Make It All Show, Chaos County Line finds Skating Polly showcasing the depth of their growth, both as songwriters and personally. Whether they're opening up about matters internal (identity, disassociation, unhealthy coping mechanisms) or external (obsession, deception, gaslighting), Skating Polly imbue that outpouring with an unfettered emotional truth.Working again with Brad Wood, the acclaimed producer behind indie-rock classics like Liz Phair's Exile in Guyville, Chaos Country Line sees their songs journey from art-punk to noise-rock to piano-driven power-pop, matching that musical complexity with a sharply honed narrative voice that manifests in countless forms (ultravivid poetry, diary-like confession, fearlessly detailed storytelling, etc.).We want to hear from you! Holy live pod episode, Batman! Kurtis from Skating Polly emerges from the Batcave to defend the loathed 1997 Joel Schumacher superhero blockbuster Batman & Robin. In this condensed episode recorded in front of an actual audience at Treefort Fest, we dive into the film's pricey production design, Batsuits with nipples, how many ice puns a human can tolerate, sexy gorilla suit stripping, Arnold Schwarzenegger being extremely over-the-top, Danger: Diabolik, Uma Thurman being a sweet little eco-terrorist, X Games influence, Robin's general unlikability, the glut of fundraisers in Gotham, and an attempt to bribe the crowd with donuts. (Bonus: Count how many times I say "umm" and "uhh" because I'm nervous in front of a crowd and know I can't edit out my flubs!)

doubleVee was put into motion in 2012 when it became clear how Allan Vest and Barb [Hendrickson] Vest's musical backgrounds complemented each other and how well the two worked together in the studio. The pair married in October of 2015 and went on to release their debut album in 2017. Allan was the primary songwriter, lead vocalist, and multi-instrumentalist for indie/orchestral pop band Starlight Mints, having produced and released four albums between 2000 and 2009, with legendary producer Dave Sardy co-producing the critically acclaimed debut album, The Dream that Stuff was Made Of. Major motion pictures and television series have utilized his music, with TV shows including Malcolm in the Middle, Californication, One Tree Hill and Gossip Girl and movies including Barnyard and The Art of Getting By. The BBC mini-series Demons effectively used "Eyes of the Night" off the 2006 album Drowaton as the series' theme song. Allan's instrumental scores have been featured in Disney animated shorts, writer/director Mickey Reece's movies Seducers Club and Punch Cowboy, in projects by Canada-based writer/director Erahm Christopher, and features helmed by director Bradley Beesley, among other productions. He has produced and arranged music for clients including Francine, Skating Polly, Student Film and Bishop Allen. He also composed the theme music for the podcast In Sickness and In Health. Barb's diverse background includes sixteen years in public radio where her achievements included writing, hosting, and producing Filmscapes, a nationally syndicated film music program. Filmscapes gave her the opportunity to interview some of her favorite renowned artists including Danny Elfman and Philip Glass. While Barb's vocal music history includes appearing in themed cover shows and providing backing vocals on recordings for local bands, her love of music began with her family, with her grandmother regularly putting a tape recorder on her piano bench and singing along to her original compositions, before she passed away in 1986 after a sudden heart attack at the age of 57. Allan and Barb later orchestrated and added backing vocals to one of her grandmother's songs as a gift for her mother, who ensured music was a big part of her daughters' lives from a very young age. doubleVee's debut album The Moonlit Fables of Jack the Rider was released on February 10, 2017. The concept album follows the story of the title character, with his tales being told in a theatrical style with Jack at the handlebars. He's a traveler who descends into a world reminiscent of The Twilight Zone where nothing is exactly as it seems, with pieces of his history unfolding over the course of the album. Their follow-up EP Songs for Birds and Bats was released April 12, 2019. The five-song release concluded with Last Castaways, selected the next year to be featured on the soundtrack for the immersive video game Beyond Blue. On July 15th, doubleVee released their new album Treat Her Strangely, nine new songs whose conception began during the height of the pandemic, with their new material written and recorded while staying holed up in their home studio as much as possible, attempting to keep themselves, their loved ones and others safe from the virus. doubleVee's info https://www.doublevee.net/ https://www.facebook.com/doubleVeeSongs doubleVee_band UC83QKD-z5ANKfhdoaGdce-A

Kelli Mayo is 19 years old and Peyton Bighorse is 23, but their band Skating Polly has already existed for 10 years. During that time they’ve played hundreds of live shows, toured with many of their heroes and released five studio recordings. They are a family band, Peyton’s mom and Kelli’s dad are a couple, and a few years ago they added their brother Kurtis Mayo on drums. This is a story of two women who were encouraged to be creative and express themselves, from a very young age. If you’re a parent, this episode shows the importance of sharing your love for creativity with your kids, and to encourage theirs. We all were kids once, so if you didn’t get encouraged as a child, this could be a vicarious pleasure to hear about Kelli and Peyton’s experience.
Anthony Lopez speaks with Kelly from Skating Polly to discuss their upcoming performance at Riot Fest, college radio, and much more!!

Working Class Audio #221 with Hans DeKline!!! Hans DeKline is a Grammy-winning, Los Angeles based mastering engineer. Since 2005, he has mastered thousands of songs & albums by artists such as U2, Pixies, Snoop Dogg, Touche Amore, mewithoutYou, Morcheeba, Veruca Salt, Lisa Loeb, Diplo, Jack Irons, James Fearnley, Candiria, Ritchie Ramone, Twista, Jesca Hoop, DJ AM, Papa M, Skating Polly, Gary Jules, Ninja Sex Party, Tim Finn, Ben Lee, JMSN, The Growlers, The Paranoyds, The Von Bondies, Partyshank, Jon Lajoie, Matthew Ryan, The Romantics, Steve Aoki, Pace Won, 825 Records & YOU! Hans grew up in Tucson AZ where he started playing and singing in bands when he was 15. His early audio experiences started with using borrowed 4 track cassette machines to make mix tapes of hip hop and punk tunes recorded from vinyl. Hans would compress/eq and change level for each tune so that those tapes would play down like commercially released compilations. He didn't realize it then but he was already starting his journey into mastering. Han's played the role of recording artist by signing to Sony Work Group fresh out of college in 96 with his group Maypole. He toured for a few years opening for Wallflowers, Smoking Popes and Our Lady Peace. By 98 it all ended... and Hans ultimately transitioned to the studio side of things. After mastering a friends record in early 2000 and receiving many referrals as a result, Hans started what was the beginning of a love affair with mastering. By 2005 he was mastering full time. About this interview: Hans joins me from his home in Los Angeles to discuss his journey, communicating with clients, raising wolves, outside interests, and remembering to always ask what does it sound like?
