Dyslexicon is the soul-searching and emotionally-driven creative outlet of multi-instrumentalist Dan Hart. It’s metal. It’s punk. It’s prog. It’s cool. Dan joins me just as the second Dyslexicon album, Dracula at Sea, is available for streaming. At one point during the conversation, I call him a “mad scientist” for the way he put together this remarkable album. He has a wonderful creative mind, and I really enjoyed talking with him. This episode is brought to you by stubborn tenacity. SubT and Beat Kitchen are two of Chicago's favorite music rooms, and for good reason. Both are embedded in their respective neighborhoods (Wicker Park and Roscoe Village, respectively), have warmth and character, and provide consistently great entertainment. Robert Gomez, owner of both venues, joins me outside Beat Kitchen to talk about the venues and Chicago's live music landscape. Timing is everything: this conversation takes place as SubT revs up its 30th anniversary celebration (#SubT30). As we chat about the music scene, we snack on Beat Kitchen's delicious steak sandwich and Thai pizza. Both are recommended, but pack some mints. I really enjoyed talking with Robert; if you have an interest in Chicago's music landscape, this is a must-listen. ## CCC is sponsored by Easy Automation. Violet, Saffron and Tyler from horror pop-punk band Won't Stay Dead join me for food and adult beverages at DryHop Brewers (3155 N. Broadway). As we eat delicious DryHop menu items like the DryHop Double Smash Burger, Fried Pickles and the Marinara Pizza, we also enjoy DryHop beers (the beauty of recording outside the car). I had the seasonal Wolpertinger (festbier), and Saffron enjoyed Peaches Peaches Peaches. Since Won't Stay Dead is a horror-themed band, we talked about all the seasonal things, from candy corn to Wes Craven, Rob Zombie to the Driller Killer. See Won't Stay Dead as part of Red Scare's 20th anniversary celebration: They're playing at Beat Kitchen on Friday the 13th (naturally) with The Bollweevils, The Brokedowns and Brendan Kelly and the Wandering Birds. That's a pretty damn epic show. ## Car Con Carne is sponsored by Easy Automation. A smart home connects virtually all of the technology in your home. Five-piece band Peach Tree Rascals achieved viral success in 2020 with their single “Mariposa” — which amassed millions of views and listens before the band ever set foot on a stage. Now, the group is on their first-ever headlining tour, which stopped at Chicago's Beat Kitchen this June. Ahead of the show, band members Dom Pizano, Tarrek Abdel-Khaliq and Issac Pech sat down with Vocalo's Nudia Hernandez to discuss releasing new music amidst pressure to make another hit, pursuing music as a first-generation citizen and their high school origin story. This interview was produced by Nudia Hernandez. It was edited by Morgan Ciocca. Keep up with Peach Tree Rascals on social media at @peachtreerascal.
The second Weekend Run Club album, “Liminal Space Race,” finds the band hitting its stride and frontman Mitchell Kinn cementing his metaphorical and lyrical voice. Mitchell and Xack (bass) join me for pizza slices from Lobo in Logan Square, and we talk about all the coming of age issues and trauma that fuel Mitchell's art (and therapy sessions, as we learn).
