I don't take my own advice. I'm Annette Leonard of https://www.annetteleonard.com find me on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/theannetteleonard Transparent. Maybe it's easy to watch me on YouTube or listen to me on a podcast and hear me talk about ways to live our lives with chronic conditions and think I put all of my words into practice. However, I'm 100% human and struggle with all the same things you are. Currently, I'm in the middle of a summer that I swore I wouldn't repeat. Yet, here I am. Last summer I made it to September in terrible shape. I promised to myself I do things differently this year. It starts innocuously. I schedule a few things, my wife schedules a few things, and then I think I need to stop and say my calendar is closed and only allow spontaneous plans as I feel up to them. Because now I feel like I'm at the mercy of my calendar -- like the show is running me. I have either missed or showed up late to my telehealth therapy each of the past 4 appointments (even though I knew the appointments were happening in the morning). I was in full meltdown this morning about my upcoming calendar, I'm now in procrastination/dread cycles when friends reach out to me. [I acknowledge that I'm SO LUCKY that I still have people who want to see me after SO MANY years of illness and opting out!] But rather than getting back to them and saying, "I'm sorry, I can't." I put off returning their texts AND feel awful about it. I'm not bringing this to you with a solution. (I suppose I need to go back and re-listen to my own episodes on boundaries!) It just felt important to be transparent with you about how I'm doing and to say, if this is something you struggle with, "me too." At my infusion clinic, they only treat autoimmune patients. We've had numerous conversations about the auto-immune personality. With nurses who've had more than 90 years of combined experience treating autoimmune patients, the answer that keeps emerging is people-pleasing accommodators. Assuming that's true: I'm with my people. And, there's no time like the present to make changes. I need to text the friend back and say, "I'm sorry, however..." I handle disappointment, why do I think my friends can't?! I do think that some of this stems from the fact that I'm afraid friends won't keep showing up. **I have a new mini-course I'm finishing about how to unlock the power of your next doctor appointment*** the first 50 people get FREE enrollment. I get to introduce you to one of my dear friends and co-workers today to talk a little bit more about some of the background literally the background of oh so delightful so let's go ahead and get started with a little bit of so-and-tell with Kimberbell   [Music]   oh we're so excited we have to do it twice all right let's take a look at what you guys are making this week oh my goodness there's some fun stuff going on guys you have been busy with all kinds of themes but take a look at this sewing room Cara she says she decorated her sewing room with alternating embroidery and quilted blocks she mounted them on eight inch canvases um so okay I love that Cara you just gave us a brilliant idea for taking any Kimberbell design and putting it at you know an angle there on point but then wrapping it around canvas let's take a closer look at some of the ones she used she used this create design this actually comes from the Bella box that we had uh last year I believe it was called live creatively you can still find those designs at me timedelivered.com for the Bella box this one is this is my happy place okay Cara I love how you also added the border of embroidery so so quilt embroidery so quilt that design actually was one of the bonus designs from that Bella box and boy that just couldn't be cuter and then she took some additional Quilt Block designs she added those to the eight inch canvases look how cute it is in her sewing room all wrapped around that door frame and then across the top border of her room oh Kara that just made me happy what a fun room to walk into every morning thank you for sharing that uh let's see Amanda she's been working on her Digital Dealer exclusives design from January this of course is the hey sweetie pie tea towel but what I love about this picture is that her husband made her the cutest little ladder to hang her tail from she says Teamwork Makes a dream work that's for sure but can we talk about the pink KitchenAid right there I mean come on who wouldn't love to have that in their kitchen but how cute let's take a look at that a closer look at hey sweetie pie there it is guys and it's not too late to get that design if you want to make that design for Valentine's Day and for all your friends and loved ones neighbors whoever you can find it with a shop who is participating in Digital Dealer exclusives go to our shop locator there you can search by those shops and they'd be happy to provide that design for you so much fun in fact I made one just yesterday I'm so excited because I'm like you know what I made one last week I was pretty excited about that and then I'm like you know I'm gonna try this again because it was so much fun but I did tell my husband no touchy no touching this towel this is for for looks only so he's been warned there you go here's another one that Tracy did taking the same design of hey sweetie pie but she made it uh into a framed picture so there you go you don't have to do it just on a tea towel or a tote bag or an apron look how cute that looks just in a frame Tracy I love it thank you so much for sharing that all right you know another other thing that you guys have been working on a whole lot lately are the new pretty impossible pouches oh my gosh it's been so fun to see them let's take a look at a few here um there's definitely been a favorite one so far I'm going to point out here in just a minute but let's take a look at this one from Wendy she says she whipped up a fruit a few pretty impossible bags this weekend for gifts she said they were so quick and easy to make she says I may just have to keep one for myself uh you better believe it Wendy you better keep one for yourself they're so cute I mean yes get them absolutely but definitely gift one to yourself let's take a closer look at a couple of hers there just beautiful love the fabric choices they're great those pretty and Posh zipper pouches are a great great way to show off just your most favorite Fabrics aren't they um speaking of really cool um uh specific Fabrics that just screams to the the person you're gifting it to let's take a look here at what sherry made for her granddaughter she says this is for her granddaughter's 16th birthday she plays softball and loves it so look what she did you guys ah it's from pretty and Posh but doesn't it take on a whole nother look with her granddaughter's favorite sport softball in this case oh my goodness she's gonna love that so personalized because she also of course added her initials there I absolutely love it now there's definitely been kind of a front runner if if you will on the pretty and Posh zipper pouches this week I'm going to show you a quick little video snippet to tell you what that front runner has been and then I'm going to show you some examples of things that you guys have made with pretty and Posh on the Margot the Margot has definitely been a favorite I see keep coming up let's take a look at our little reel that we made for the video or for the for the Margot and then I'm going to show you what you guys have been making with the Margot let's take a look   yeah I'm feeling it I'm feeling it I like you Margo and this is what you guys are making you like her too of course we named the pretty and Posh zipper pouches after four names um and the Margo is definitely a winner in your book let's see what you guys have done here we go Tracy she says this is the Margot I told Kim I was doing the Margo bag first just decided to change the colors a bit she's so pretty she gave us a helpful hint too which I just love she says raise your embroidery foot in the quilting over the flexi foam so as you can see here she's got the red Velveteen knit patch there and that's where a little bit of flexi whole thing but basically what she did is she loved loved loved broom Hilda's Bakery from kimberville this came out this was a Halloween design that came out years ago so you she used the same concept of broom-hilda's Bakery same block sizes and in many of those cases um she said that she said most of the block ideas came from Birmingham Hilda it's quilt exactly how they were she traded the pumpkins for hearts take a closer look because you are going to love it and if you are a big Kimber Bell fan out there you're going to start recognizing all of these little Snippets from different well the main quilt but as you know there's all kinds of bonus projects with it too and all kinds of like additional little quilts remember this we're not going to talk about too much today because we did last week but what I do want to focus on is something that is all the buzz today you guys are already downloading it you're excited because one of the things that I would say is the star of the show is the background quilting I should say optional background quilting for this but let's take a moment here to look at some of these up close oh let's see background quilting designs on here   oh my goodness okay there's so many good ones can be used for so many things this was especially something that you guys talked about last week was you couldn't get over this border if you see the Border how it just says so happy in there and the ruler you just about lost your minds when you saw how cute the background quilting was on the ruler and I mean you name it there's some fun elements as part of this background quilting bundle it is available today okay so you're waiting for this to arrive it's being sent out to shots starting February 8th so that's next Wednesday but while you're waiting what about taking advantage of a 20 discount on the background quilting bundle right now today so that when it comes next week in the next couple weeks for you you are ready to go but do you know what I say around here it takes a village it certainly takes a village to do what to produce what we do at Kimber Bell and one of the most special unique things about a Kimber Bell project these days is the beautiful background quilting that is an option for you to have well I want you to eat someone really special to me who oversees an amazing team of people that make background quilting possible everyone and I'm gonna introduce you to my friend Liz Liz hello hello good morning everybody how are you feeling about being on today I am so excited and also just so honored this is so much fun to get to spend time with you well oh yes yeah Liz I know you watch every week um uh what's new Wednesday I know I see you on and now you're on um tell us a little bit about Liz you leave this team but you have some amazing ladies behind the scenes as well you've got uh Moki and Mikhail and Jennica who also so I call you the Fantastic Four [Laughter] and um tell him tell her about a little bit about your team and what it's like to work on background quilting designs at Kimber doll right I have an amazing team like you said the four of us are all working from home moms we're all young moms um so we all work part-time um but we all really have so much fun working on the background quilting behind the scenes so um we all use our talents and skills in making the artwork for the background quilting and creating the instructions file formats testing all the things that go into Kimber Bell's wonderful designs the four of us work on day in day out with this background quilting so I really love to shout out to my team they are so amazing they are they make it possible for us to put out so many designs and you know that we are always every week there's at least one new quilting Design coming out um so we really enjoy what we do and we work so hard to make sure that we're always getting something new something fun out to you you guys um but yeah working on background quilting is so much fun there's just so many possibilities and that's the theme Liz um you're saying you're exactly right there's so many possibilities how tell us a little bit give us a little insight into what what is the process because because of so many possibilities as you mentioned it's hard to like just narrow it down going oh I think I'll do this as a toss designer I'll do this as a clear blue tile designer what is the process when you get the artwork or when you first learn about a new product here at camperval is that when you guys like go to work and you know give us a little Insider take on that yeah I'd love to tell you a little bit more about it so really when a project is launched at Kimber Bell the artwork is finalized that's when I get to see it I get to be one of the lucky ones that gets to see these beautiful projects at the very beginning when I see the artwork I start pinpointing you know all the cute elements that are within the project um and I start kind of pulling those those elements that I want to use to create quilting designs so um really when we're working on a background quilting bundle for a project like oh so delightful quilts and Decor it's all about how does it how can we complement the project as a whole right so we don't want to like we don't want to outshine we want to complement we want to coordinate with the project because really it's just about taking your project to the next the next level if you want to do that right so how what elements do I want to pull from the project to coordinate and make those background quiltings really play well as a team as a team with the project right and all the embellishments so really I look at the project as a whole what are all of the blocks um what are all the embellishments going on the quilts what are the fabrics and so all those things are kind of in my mind and I'll start doodling out the elements and pulling and playing with how would I toss them which ones make sense for a clear blue tiles design which ones make more sense for a block by block or an orange design if you're looking on the website so really there's there's a lot of thought that goes into it how does it coordinate how does it play well with the with the project that they're going to go on I I love how you mentioned that you don't want to to be like you don't want it to outshine the design itself and I would say that you know anyone who does background quilting whether they're a long armor or you know they're doing it on their domestic you know sewing machine or whatever that is the goal is to really make it special but still kind of stay as a background dancer right back up singer maybe totally you know totally that's exactly right yeah you want it to play well with the project you wanted to just enhance the project and just make it that extra level of fun right that's the word particular level of cute so yeah enhance the project Well you certainly do enhance the project um I think it would be fun to actually show everyone how to find these designs and I would love to keep you on the screen here Liz and have you walk us through maybe some of your uh you know the the elements that you just absolutely loved uh best making so let me show people where to find this um this is of course the Kimber Bell website here you can find it at kimberbell.com and if you go up to products let's see where it says get it today you're going to go to background quilting all right and then here's where you're gonna see you know uh them in different um sections here of course we see the latest design right there but that's latest design is actually part of a bundle design for oh so delightful so I'm going to show you where to find all of it anyway so if we go back up to the top it says all designs and then by project let's click on buy project I love how you guys have like have made this really easy easier to see what we think goes with what so this one is the oh so delightful as you can see here we've got let me call you tweet heart sweetest pie cup of cheer you name it let's click on oh so delightful and there you're gonna find these as downloads uh for single designs or a bundle design and that's where if you go as a click as a bundle design uh You're Gonna Save 20 by buying it all in a bundle right so I'm going to scroll down here to where you're going to see the 20 20 discount and then the bundle design so I'm going to click on that but no of course that all of these are available as single ones too so really it gives you flexibility to pick and choose or to take all of it um what you would like to use on your projects okay so you talked about um well we'll talk about the difference between orange and blue designs here in a minute um but let's first take a closer look at the designs themselves tell us about this one Liz the Border oh okay so this is one of my favorite the Bobby border one I love it so when I first saw the initial artwork for oh so delightful that Maine so happy quilt when I saw that inner sashing was yellow fabric I was like there's just the only one thing we can do here we have to do a measuring tape right because that's the staple for any sewing so this is our bouncing ideas is so awesome to be able to do because when I put that yellow inner Border in there I was not even thinking about a ruler I just thought it looked pretty with the blue border it kind of Set It Off and then you take it up 10 notches and do a ruler that is seriously the showstopper right I love it was just it was meant to be it was just one of those clicking moments I just knew it had to be so that is the inner border design so you can get a closer look here real quick I'm going to scroll through these pictures so we can find a close look at that border oh here we go here's one but I love it so much I cannot cannot make that possible on an embroidery machine and it's going to line up perfectly oh here's another close-up look and um oh here we go look at that you guys it's so cute and what is really cool is it will not matter if you have a 5x7 hoop a six by ten hoop 8 by 12 or 9 by 14 it all works and it's gonna you're not gonna know what size of hoop you used right exactly so it's one of the new block by block only borders so it's meant to stitch seamlessly it's going to look like edge to edge you're not going to be able to see where it starts where it ends so look at your extracts to make sure you see you know what what it's going to look like with your particular hoop with smaller Hoops we could only get one two three right so but but still you're gonna have this beautiful measuring tape look that comes across in your cute inner sashing and I just think it is just the perfect little border to go around the inside of your quilts oh my gosh yes absolutely okay let's take a look at of course then you've got the so happy which is so pretty um yeah yeah you've got you so happy joy sewing machines fabric bolts scissors just all those fun elements together to just give you that really cute chunky detailed outer border I love it love it okay zigzag you can't go wrong with a basic zigzag right exactly exactly the inspiration behind this one I was just thinking about your basic zigzag stitch on your sewing machine right and just making it a really versatile linear design that you can use Beyond oh so delightful right like this would be cute on basically any block ever it's just such a sweet easy cute design it is it it really is versatile uh for sure okay I love this radial design how did you come up with this one this one is actually inspired by one of the new vintage Flora Fabrics the sparkle design so the sparkle design is so cute and I just wanted to kind of echo the beauty of that fabric and create a background quilting design that went along with it so really those radial stars are just those cute little sparkles from the fabric and again this one is just so versatile right like it's just that that classic crosshatch diamond with the little stars in the middle just makes it really extra cute so and again that design itself could be used on anything it doesn't scream sewing room collection exactly yeah exactly oh my gosh okay this one is another show stopper I know I keep saying that and I can't decide which is like my favorite because for all different reasons uh this one just just makes you happy tell us about this this one is just putting all those sweet sewing notions all together you've got your buttons your thread spools your PIN cushions of course because there's those pin cushioned blocks on these on the quilt and you've got your scissors in there too and it's all just connected by these cute loopy threads I just think it's such a such a sweet um design just that encompasses the joy of sewing and just all those tools and things that you use when you're sewing nailed it encompasses with a joy of sewing I couldn't agree more okay I know where this was inspired from but why don't you share with the rest of the group so this one again inspired by one of our vintage Flora Fabrics so um it's the yes the honeycomb flower so the flowers are in these cute little hexagon shapes and we just wanted to kind of echo that geometry that geometric design because with every good bundle I really try and have you know a good variety of different designs that really you kind of get you know some geometrics some more organic I really try and give you a variety so that you have a lot to play with so this is one of those that just feels really geometric but it's fun because it's a clear blue tiles design too so I can see this being used with B quilting too because it kind of gives that honeycomb feel yes now you can use it on something that's a little bit more like modern because it has kind of a modern feel to it too so it's just a super versatile super pretty design it's gonna Stitch out really quick too so it's good for bigger projects I didn't even think about using that with a with like a b design but you're absolutely right it's kind of a a modern take on the honeycomb and it it's it works it's perfect and I love that it was inspired by the Vintage Flora fabric too which is kind of cool um okay this one a lot of people mentioned this last week when um they saw the oh so delightful quilt for the first time and that was the cross stitch background quilting so fun this one is one of my favorites from this bundle um a lot of labor of love with this one because you know figuring out how to make it look all over the house design but also encompassing the idea of this cross stitch design so really yeah we pulled from those cross stitch Hearts we wanted to play up that idea of these beautiful those little Hoops that you're gonna make on the quilt bringing in that cross stitch I feel um if you look at the lifestyle folders of this one it really double stitches over so it gives you this kind of thick chunky looking quilting that's really really sweet um so I really love this one the love the way it turned out let me see if I can find a picture of that real quick um of the cross stitch here oh yes here we go there yes you can really see that it's got kind of like it goes over itself twice so it's really got this chunky textural feel so it's it works really well on filler blocks it works really well as a background quilting design but it's just so fun it's such a fun design and I can see it being used Valentine's Day which is coming up I can see it being used on you know like an heirloom baby quilt I don't know I just feel like it's such a cute versatile design that um really shines in this bottle I'm just like sifting through some of these pictures so you can see more up close here's a look at oh look at those scissors on top of the thread spool but here's I love this so happy because of course depending on the thread color you use you can make it more prominent or you can make them kind of you know settle into the background just a little bit too right   okay this let's see let's let me go back here to one that is exclusive to the bundle do you want to tell us about the little oh where did it go the little straight pins yes um I will find it right there it is there we go straight pins these are this quilting is called the pins quilting design and it is exclusive if you buy the bundle um it's a filler quilting Block it's a one by six sized block um file size that you could use to quilt these very specific filler blocks that are on the quilt so you've got some rows two rows of these one by six blocks that go across the quilt and we just designed these pins to go there um knowing that we were going to have these sweet blooming pins coming out as coming in the embellishment kit so um I just wanted to kind of play up The Sid of pins and just another one of those cute Notions that you have in your sewing room well and let's be honest my pants look exactly like that on the floor right it's like we just tossed the pins on the floor and took a picture of them and come on I mean if they were all nicely in a row who are we kidding who are we kidding oh my goodness so as you can see she's also on the website She's listed what all the the designs are that come in the bundle how many sizes they come in if you click on any of those um you can also find the single designs of it sounds like um and you can save 20 through the month of February on this right that's great now a question that's often asked oh let me show this real quick do you want to tell us about this picture that I'm seeing yes absolutely so that is a picture of the background quilting guide so what the background quilting guide is anytime we offer a bundle we always give you a quilting guide and it basically tells you on our sample what quilting we used on which block and what size so it basically a map of if you want to do the background quilting exactly how we did it on our on our sample that we took photos of um you use the guide to you know select the quilting that we use the size that you need for each block throughout the whole project so oh that's fantastic I love that you're really trying to make it easy easy for all of us so okay bundle it'll be in your it'll be in your download you'll see that there's a PDF called quilting guide oh okay yeah great great great great um scrolling through these real fast but tell us um you know from your expert opinion as the digitizer Behind these um and your team what is the difference we get this question a lot and you know I think we should come out with a video to to help explain it too but in a nutshell if people are seeing some designs on a blue background and some designs on an orange background why why why is that and what's the difference between them how do you use them differently that kind of thing because I think it's important for everyone to understand that totally I'm so happy to talk about it so blue designs are compatible with clear blue tiles so we've really tried to make that that kind of really easy to think about and orange designs are block by block only and why don't you add to that the blue designs and gray designs are perfect for Clear Blue tiles exactly because the gray designs are also all over um right border designs yes exactly so the dark gray borders are clear blue tiles um compatible also um light gray so this particular Border in oh so delightful quilts and Decor is a light gray and orange designs are block by block only and the reason why those are block by block only is because um they will have travel lines or they will have places where they need to connect outside of the block that if they just don't lend themselves well to being an all-over design like clear blue tiles is supposed to be right so um so like for example the zigzag quilting um when you go up the line you're gonna have to travel across to get to the next Lane so it's just really something you wouldn't want to use as an all-over quilting sign because you'd have these little connecting travel lines that just wouldn't make it look as beautiful so um clear blue tiles designs the blues and the dark blue designs are ones that you can use all over you also get you know the block by block files which just basically means we've given you the placement lines for your batting and your and your background fabric so you're setting up your block for a feature project like these oh so delightful quilts and Decor so that's sort of like a in a nutshell um there's also an informational table on the website that you can look at and it gives you really good tips of what's the difference between the orange and the blue or the blue I love and the clear of the tiles designs oh thanks for pointing that out Liz yeah that's great yeah so you know when we talk about block by block quilting that's a lot of times what we do on something like this where it has a lot of appliques on top right and so you do lock by Block in the background and like Liz says it's got you know uh your it accounts for your um seam allowance right so then you you sew those blocks together block by block right and um there you have it but block by block also has the traveling lines that was mentioned with a zigzag so it's got a travel somewhere so instead of us seeing all of those traveling lines there inside the scene which is awesome   are you there Liz exactly oh okay I am hi and okay you kind of cut out there for a minute and then you're blue anything that's on blue or dark gray work perfectly with clear blue tiles but also with block by block quilting exactly exactly so you get both sets of files so that you have all the versatile versatility you need to create any project you want with those so that's so awesome oh my goodness this is just it's fun I hope you guys all feel like it's fun to kind of hear what's going on well like I say literally in the background camper Bell um because we have this amazing team of these four ladies like she said work at home moms who have made um all of our lives so much more fun and exciting and like really um truly remarkable being able to do this on our home embroidery machines as we do it instead of waiting till the end and then figuring out how to quilt it we're putting together these beautiful designs as we go oh it's awesome okay so Liz you know I'm gonna I'm gonna give a shout out to to everyone out there who's watching because Liz and her team and like I said it's Liz and mookie and Michael and Jennica they're always reading your comments we are so if you know you have that this is the time to let them know what kinds of background cruelties would you want to see what's what I think I've even put this here in a banner I want to know they want to know if you were you know if you had your ideal background quilting design that you could have Liz and her awesome team create what is it that you're looking for in background quilting because we at Kimber Bell want to provide all of that for you um so that you can use block by block method clear blue tiles method and really make it um you know something special for you wouldn't you say so Liz are you ready to take down notes I am so excited we often look at Kimber bells and fellas for ideas so we love all the ideas and we want to make it happen for you so please always send us Liz I'm here to come no doubt about that oh my gosh yeah it always always needed right always oh my gosh some baby themes I know you've got some baby aliens coming in yes I mean I could just like Liz said you know she gets to be kind of the you know the first to see some of these designs you know right from the start but I also get to see some of the background designs that are coming off of that really early on in the process because these guys are on it they're ahead of the game and it has been really fun to see like what's coming out and so I see what you guys are asking for and I'm going oh   this is kind of fun something military like a Navy themed one with ships submarines planes I like a good idea I really like that okay well you know that team of four is going to be taking down feverish notes today to find out what's going on uh or to to figure out what their roadmap can well what can be added to because you guys are quite quite ahead of the game aren't you we are but we can always move things around   that is awesome all right well Liz I can't thank you enough can't thank you enough for everything that you and your team uh does to make our all of our Lives should we say oh so delightful yeah oh so delightful thank you for everything that you do I know um a lot of people appreciate it and we certainly do too thanks for joining me today say hi to that little guy for me is he with Grandma thank you for having me   yeah oh that's fun okay well have a great day Liz keep on creating thank you for having me have a good one oh don't you love her yeah she one of these days you're gonna have to meet the whole crew because they're all just so awesome so grateful for um their their contributions to to making what Kimber Bell is what it is today so thank you Liz and Team all right guys so let's go on um I just wanted to give you a sneak peek on something that's coming out to shops um they're going to be learning about it here next week because it was supposed to come out a while ago um this old linen pillow cover blank and it didn't make it when we got it wood and now it's here so it's going to be sent out here very soon but I want to show you what I did with this oat linen it's called the oat linen pillow cover blank and it's coming out again next week it's going to be sent to shops with oh so delightful so what I did is I took one of the blocks from oh so delightful the sewing machine and I added it to the oat linen pillow cover blank as you know our our pillow cover planks are already quilted so this this uh like a honeycomb uh hexacon uh look of uh background quilting is already quilted and it comes flat this is what you're going to be looking for it's the Quilted pillow blank it comes with the open side seams so that it's really easy to take any designs any design and then this one I used the design from oh so delightful because we gotta get you to see the possibilities right as you can see it comes just as one flat piece but it's already got a hidden invisible zipper in it so that all I have to do oh and the side seams are already surged as you can see um all I have to do is lay this on the bed of my machine either a sewing machine or a embroidery machine do my design whatever that entails and then I just sew up the sides with like a half of an inch seam and then I've got the opening to put in a pillow form and voila I've got the cutest little pillow and all I did for these little Flags is I just cut some triangle fabrics and just attach them to this uh little mini Rick rack and we'll go into a little bit more details about these kinds of ideas of what to do on these pillow cover blanks in the coming weeks but I did want to give you a heads up that that is also coming to a quilt shop near you online or you know if you're lucky enough to walk through their doors um they will have this and isn't that beautiful if you could see this fabric it's like this linen texture and it truly is a gorgeous versatile uh pillow cover blank that you can put anything on and so for my sewing room I added a you know a little sewing machine but again that comes from the quilt oh so delightful right here being sent to cool shops next week so exciting all right so the reason why I share that with you well a couple reasons is because one it's going to be part of our um giveaway this week but before I go into the giveaway I don't want to forget something very important and that is to announce the two winners of the Epic giveaway hole please remember this last week these are the brand new oh so delightful tote bags reusable My guest today has packed a helluva lot into her 43 years. Dawn O'Porter started her career in TV production, before finding her way in front of the camera to host a series of attention-grabbing documentaries on everything from polygamy to Dirty Dancing. By the time she hit her 30s, like many women, Dawn was moving faster and faster to stand still. By the time she was married (to the actor Chris O'Dowd) with the first of her two sons, running a vintage fashion label and the refugee charity now known as Choose Love - AND writing books - she realised something had to give!In this case, that was Dawn herself. She is now a full-time author of eight books including the Richard and Judy pick So Lucky and her latest, Cat Lady - a funny and frank look at the boxes we squeeze ourselves into to try to fit other people's expectations.Dawn joined me from her home in LA to discuss the cats-in-the-bedroom conundrum, what she learnt from launching and losing a business, why the need to be liked is exhausting and how ageing helped her recognise her own value. We also talked Botox, whether perimenopause makes you smell strange and why she'll never stop advocating for kaftans! Hankering after a Cat Lady jumper like Dawn's? Visit Joanieclothing.com.* You can buy all the books mentioned in this podcast at Bookshop.org, including Cat Lady by Dawn O'Porter and the book that inspired this podcast, The Shift: how I lost and found myself after 40 - and you can too, by me!* And if you'd like to support the work that goes into making this podcast and get a weekly newsletter plus loads more content including transcripts of the podcast, please consider joining The Shift community. Episode 10, The bookstore owners attempt to answer our good friend Shari Altman's (from a great book resource Literary North) question -- "I am looking for strange and beautiful novels about middle age." We note that Shari is nowhere near approaching middle age; we then debate what defines middle age. Allie, Sam, Emma, and Kari recommend a few books in response to her query, including House in the Cerulean Sea by TJ Klune; Agatha of Little Neon by Claire Luchette; So Lucky by Nicola Griffith; One DOA, One on the Way by Mary Robison; and The Swimmers by Julia Otsuka. Welcome to Shelf Help a podcast where booksellers help you answer one of life's trickier  - and we'd argue extremely important - questions: what should you read next?  If you've got a reading dilemma, you can email us a question or voice memo at shelfhelpuv@gmail.com. “It's a passion, an emotion, it's a fashion,” it's: BURLESQUE (2010), the penultimate episode of our She's So Lucky season! Naturally the movie that brought Christina Aguilera to the silver screen, Cher to musicals, and Stanley Tucci to wearing a feather boa finds Jo and Rhiannon going balls to the absolute wall discussing about this star-bedazzled bustier of a movie, burlesque as a concept/culture/verb/lounge, something known as [the] “vocal runs,” and reckoning with how much they each adore and reference Xtina's unforgettable debut alongside the Goddess of Pop herself.

What happens when you contractually obligate the winner (Kelly Clarkson) and runner-up (Justin Guarini) of the first season of American Idol to make a spring break musical together, you ask? Well wonder no longer, dear reader, because the answer is From Justin to Kelly (2003), a movie described by Kelly Clarkson herself as "real, real bad!" A crown jewel of our She's So Lucky season, episode 6 finds your hosts examining American Idol culture, 2003 texting culture, towel choreography culture, and an infamous skirt made entirely out of neckties (eat your heart out, Avril!). Come commit a little American idolatry on the shores of Fort Lauderdale with us and see if you agree with Rhiannon that a film whose star has begged that it not become a cult classic is ultimately "not that bad," or with Jo, who would say that it "is bad."

This episode finds your hosts rightfully unhinged as we attempt to walk a mile in Beyoncé's shiny platform boots and situate the very concept of Austin Powers within the zeitgeist of the 21st century, a conversation that includes real-time searches of "Dr. Evil tattoos," among other things. We talk about writing fiction, finding inspiration and the power of saying no. Feeling Good Podcast | TEAM-CBT - The New Mood Therapy

Do Negative Thoughts or Hormones Cause Postpartum Depression and Anxiety? And What’s the Best Treatment? TEAM-CBT or Pills? We begin today’s podcast with a lovely endorsement, and an announcement that Rhonda’s new free Wednesday TEAM therapy training group will be open to therapists from around the world and will start on December 2, 2020 at 9 to 11 AM west coast (pacific) time. Rhonda will have many fine trainers working with her, including the incredible Richard Lam, and the magnificent Leigh Harrington, to make your training experience stellar. If you are interested, contact Rhonda right away, as slots will be strictly limited. You can also fill out this form to confirm your interest! Today, Rhonda and I are proud and excited to interview our brilliant and delightful guest, Thai-An Truong, from Oklahoma. Thai-An is an accomplished TEAM Therapist (the first in Oklahoma) and popular TEAM trainer for therapists who want to learn about these new techniques. Thai-An, her husband, and two children on Halloween, the day after this podcast was recorded. Her daughter was born earlier this year. Thai-An’s niche is unusual and extremely interesting—she specializes in the treatment of women with post-partum depression with TEAM therapy, and usually without medications. This is extremely interesting since the world is currently focused on the belief that post-partum depression is a 100% biological disorder that results from hormonal changes, needs treatment with medications, and typically requires a year or more of treatment before improvement can be expected. Of course, this message can unfortunately function as a self-fulfilling prophecy. And is it even valid? No, says Thai-An. Although she sees a role for medications in some women with severe post-partum depression and anxiety, she says that the vast majority of the women she treats recover quickly without drugs. I was so happy to hear this, since my experience has been the same. In fact, Chapter 2 of my new book, Feeling Great, features my treatment of a woman struggling with severe post-partum depression who recovered in a single TEAM therapy session. Thai-An begins by describing her own horrifying and totally unexpected battle with post-partum depression after her first child was born 4 ½ years ago. She had a wonderful pregnancy and was excited about the prospect of giving birth to her daughter, but immediately after delivery, “it suddenly felt like the rug was pulled out from under me.” She went into a state of self-loathing and struggled with extreme depression and anxiety. She says, “I could barely sleep, woke up in a state of panic, and wondered ‘can I feed my baby?’” It got so bad that Thai-An began to think that her family and daughter would be better off without her. She said, “I even asked my mother if she’d be willing to raise her.” I felt incredibly sad to hear that, and I could barely even grasp the intensity of her suffering. The suffering of extreme depression is almost beyond human understanding, especially if you’ve never been there yourself. Thai-An was treated with medications, including antidepressants, but they didn’t help and made her more anxious. Then was told that these side effects are “expected” and advised to “wait it out.” She said, “I saw how devastating post-partum depression is—it robs you of joy.” They told me it was biological. One theme of Thai-An’s depression was her belief that moms are supposed to bonded to their children and loving at every moment, so “I asked myself, ‘did I make a mistake? Am I a monster? Why don’t I feel that way?’” Fortunately, Thai-An recovered after 3 months, and decided she wanted to work with other mothers with similar problems. She now has a thriving practice in Oklahoma. Rhonda asked how other doctors view her work, since Thai-An’s treatment approach—TEAM—is so radically different from current treatments that emphasize biology. Thai-An said the doctors have become extremely supportive when they see fabulous results in the patients they refer to her. Thai-An emphasized several components of TEAM-CBT that have been especially helpful to the women she treats. Positive Reframing. She says that this method is super powerful. Traditionally, woman are told (and think) that they need to “calm down,” but this makes the symptoms worse, especially the anxiety. Positive Reframing, in radical contrast, honors their negative feelings, and the effect is often “mind-blowing.” She says, “It heals a lot of the symptoms” Anxiety is even more common in post-partum depression than depression, including OCD symptoms. For example, many women have horrific intrusive thoughts that their child may suffocate, or that they’ll throw their child down the stairs, or other gruesome scenarios that they try to control and suppress. Of course, that never works and always makes the symptoms worse. Exposure, techniques like Cognitive Flooding—leaning into the fantasies and surrendering to them—can often be rapidly curative, but requires great courage on the part of the therapist, as well as the patient. Sadly, 80% of American mental health professionals avoided Exposure, wrongly thinking it will be “too dangerous” or that the patient is “too fragile.” Therapists like Thai-An, with expertise in Exposure and the courage to use it, are treasures, or “healers,” because they can often cause almost unbelievably rapid recovery and freedom from horrific fears. The Hidden Emotion Model. Nearly all anxious individuals are overly “nice,” and often suppress forbidden negative feelings, like feeling angry or annoyed. Bringing the hidden feelings to conscious awareness, and helping the patient express them, using the Five Secrets of Effective Communication, can also have fantastic and rapid healing effects. I, David, resonated with all of these themes, having seen nearly identical scenarios in many patients I’ve treated with post-partum depression, as well as their husbands or partners. Rhonda and I both share Thai-An’s enormous enthusiasm for TEAM-CBT, and greatly admire her incredible dedication to healing. Thai-An said that although post-partum depression is a bit more common among African-Americans as well as poor and underprivileged populations, it really affects everyone from a wide variety of social and economic backgrounds. No one is immune to this debilitating and demoralizing disorder. Thai-An emphasized that while hormones may play some kind of role, the real and surprising culprit is perfectionism, and the expectation that things should or should not be a particular way. In other words, telling yourself that “I should not feel angry or sad,” and “I should be flooded with love and joy,” can set you up for a painful fall. These are the unrealistic expectations that trigger intense feeling of inadequacy, anxiety, and worthlessness, not only in women with post-partum depression, but all of us. I can attest to that personally! Thai-An emphasized that recovery is not just a psychological phenomenon, but involves a deep and spiritual transformation of the patient. I definitely resonate with this theme. Thai-An attributes her fantastic therapy skills to her many mentors—teachers she’s learned from at the Feeling Good Institute (FGI) in Mt. View, California, including Matthew May, MD, Angela Krumm, PhD, and many others. But she especially wants to honor her hero and mentor, Mike Christensen, who teaches introductory TEAM-CBT classes at the FGI. I want to second that, since I also love and admire Mike, and all of our amazing teachers and colleagues at the FGI. Thai-An’s parents emigrated from Viet-Nam, a culture where psychiatry and psychology are practically unknown. Thai-An was “supposed” to go to medical school, but found psychology classes way more interesting than pre-medical classes. But her mom didn’t understand. She said, “Are you going to sit around and talk to crazy people al day?” Fortunately, Thai-An stuck to her guns and went to graduate school in a mental health field rather than medical school, and the rest is history. We are SO LUCKY to know Thai-An. She is a diminutive and beautiful woman with the brain and heart of a giant! Rhonda and I both feel extremely honored to have her testimony on today’s podcast! If you would like to contact Thai-An for training, please visit TEAMCBTTraining.com. If you are in Oklahoma and looking for treatment, you can contact Thai-An at LastingChangeTherapy.com. Thanks for tuning in today. Next week, it looks like we’ll have another amazing guest, Cai Chen, who will also blow your mind. Warmly, David  and  Rhonda

I love to read books with a seasonal feel (cold and snowy in the Winter, spooky in Fall, etc.). I would love a book for summer that feels sunny and hot, but, the problem is, all of my favorite books are dark or gothic. My favorite genres are fantasy, mystery, and gothic but I am also open to lit fic and non-fiction. My favorite books of all time are The Diviners series by Libba Bray, Lonesome Dove, The Thirteenth Tale, Rebecca, The Night Circus, anything Tana French, The Queen of the Night, and The Secret History. -Danielle 2. Hi! I’ve sent in before but this isn’t a recommendation for me. My brother is a teenager but is only now just starting to get into reading (which I’ve been trying to do for years). He enjoys anything action packed, historical, logical, and or science fiction. As long as the book is exciting to keep him engaged and not too long. He’s 16 and grew up on Percy Jackson but hasn’t read much else from then on. Hope that helps!   -Gigi 3. Hey y’all! I would like a YA book based on the dance world. I have read some nonfiction, but I would really like a fiction book. I have been dancing for 13 years, and right now am dancing primarily ballet and pointe. I do not want a drama- filled cliche book, like dance moms. Just something where dance is a huge part of the main character’s life and is really good.  Thanks so much! -Allison  4. Hi I’ve recently been reading a lot of middlegrade books, I find they are just the mood I want for this lockdown & it’s helped me clear my backlog. My favourite was Orion Lost by Alastair Chisholm It features all the elements of science fiction I love, a bit of peril, a lot of space travel and a view of a positive future. It reminded me of Heinlien’s juveniles (without the sexism), Becky Chambers and KA Applegate’s Remnant Chronicles. I’m looking for more middle grade that is proper science fiction please help me find something that is not an earth bound dystopian future (that seems to be all that comes up in searches) I’ve got Dragon Pearl by Yoon Ha Lee on order but need more! -Bex 5. Something to escape into: fantasy, fairytale, folklore, time slippage -Kim 6. Hi, I have fallen in love with essay collections this year. They have all been thematically different but written by female authors, beautiful writing as well as are on interesting topics.  I have loved: Constellations by Sinead Gleeson Axiomatic by Maria Tumarkin Trick Mirror by Jia Tolentino Make It Scream, Make it Burn by Leslie Jamison  Thick by Tressie Macmillan Cottam Would love to hear some further recommendations! Not that keen on anything by straight white men. Thanks.  -Georgia 7. Hi! Me and a friend are starting a book club! We’re a group of disabled and chronically ill young people, from the US and UK (so books released in both is a must). Available in audio and on Kindle also important for accessibility reasons, nothing too long or hard to read, and maybe older books so they’re also available second hand/in libraries without huge hold lists. Disability representation is obviously important, but other diversities (especially LGBTQ+) would be great too, and personally I’d quite like something with mental health or neurodiversity themes. Fiction and non both okay, any and all genres too! Books already on the list include Get a Life, Chloe Brown and The Pretty One -Caz Books Discussed Bitter Orange by Claire Fuller Each of Us A Desert by Mark Oshiro (out in September 2020) (tw: abusive parent, graphic violence) The Luminous Dead by Caitlin Starling Zero Sum Game by SL Huang The Walls Around Us by Nova Ren Suma A Time To Dance by Padma Venkatraman   We’re Not From Here by Geoff Rodkey Sal and Gabi Break The Universe by Carlos Hernandez Conjure Women by Afia Atakora (TW slavery, rape) Unraveling by Karen Lord (tw: harm to children) My Time Among the Whites by Jennine Capó Crucet Beyoncé In Formation by Omise’eke Natasha Tinsley Far From You by Tess Sharpe (TW homophobia, drug addiction) So Lucky by Nicola Griffith

Happy Valentine's Day, everyone! In this episode of Major Crush, Lou and Meredith talk about wine and love. There's just something about the way a bottle of wine connects people -- no matter how you'll be spending time together on this special day! As promised in the episode, we've added a couple of varietal picks to help you zero in on some "sure things" to share with someone special this year! Lou's Picks: If you're spending a cozy evening in, and you really want a red wine that pairs well with just about every yummy food you can think of, Lou's top pick is a Zinfandel. They call Zinfandel "the winemaker's wine" because it is so food-friendly, and it expresses so many things to so many people in every sip. If you're up for trying a Zin, you don't have to spend a lot to get a good one. Right now, 2013 and 2014 California Zinfandels are drinking pretty darn well, so if you're dining out this year, keep an eye out for Zinfandels of those vintages. And one more tip: One of Lou's all-time favorite Zin brands is Ravenswood! Meredith's Pick: You'll never go wrong if you pick an Italian varietal! Meredith's biggest crush right now is on the Italian varietal called Dolcetto -- which, in Italian means, "little sweet one." (How could that be a bad pick for your sweetheart on Valentine's Day?!) But this wine pairs so well with Italian foods -- as well as roasted meats and vegetarian dishes, too. But the best part about a Dolcetto is the price. You really don't have to spend a lot of money to get an amazingly drinkable wine that will truly elevate the mood and add a whole bunch of love! However, if you're dining out and specifically if you're eating Italian, you might also consider a traditional Chianti. It's usually one of the better choices on an Italian wine list because it is such an every-day part of the way Italian people express the love baked into their favorite dishes! By the way, we were SO LUCKY to get a quick "guided interview" with Christian Parks of EARTH & SKY CHOCOLATES, located in Calistoga, CA! As one of the premiere Wine Country chocolatiers, it was so kind of Christian to take time out of his demanding schedule to offer up a few tips about how to pair wine and chocolate. Dawn O'Porter is brilliant. Not only has she fronted smart, thought-provoking documentaries, but she is also an author, including of the Sunday Times bestseller, The Cows. Legit just jumped out of the shower to write and record this podcast. I am sitting here, wet hair, bringing some hot off the mental presses stuff. You've seen me talk about how I believe balance is a lie. Balance implies that all the balls are in the air, your splitting time evenly, every plate is spinning. This. Is. Bullshit. The working moms I talk with every day struggle so hard with this concept of balance because it leaves them always feeling like they're doing everything fine, but never great- and rarely with time for themselves. Have you been there? Me too. I want to chat today about the concept of being present - over being balanced. This is a tough lesson I have had to learn recently (and many times before) and I am SO GRATEFUL that Ryan keeps challenging me in this area. Here's a little back story - I am finally feeling like my coaching business has legs. It's incredible. I'm able to serve more women at a higher level and I am on Cloud 9 about that. The issue is, I tend to get very focused on what's lighting me up, to the detriment of those around me. Ryan and I had a heart to heart recently as I was explaining what my business would need to be successful during this Mom Strong Method launch (i.e. more time away from the family) and he challenged me in a beautiful way. You see, he believes in me, in my dream, wants me to be happy. He's willing to give me space to grow this business which means more duties fall on his plate. I am SO LUCKY and never take that for granted… …except I do. What I was doing was taking more structured time for office hours but when I was with Zeke and Ryan, I wasn't truly present. I was answering texts, emails, responding on FB, sneaking away to shoot off a voice text. You can only imagine how frustrating that is for my family who already is feeling like they're second fiddle during this time of growth for my business. So, after Ryan lovingly but firmly letting me know that this wasn't working for him and Zeke - I made a promise. Be present. That is my lesson for today. If you're in a season of life where shit is going down at home or your job is heating up or your extracurricular activities are taking time - when you are at home, be present. The world CAN wait and WILL wait - if you train it to. How you let others treat you and interact with you is how you train them to continue to to do so. Here are some of my tips: Put the phone away. Legit - not like turned over next to your leg but AWAY. Set boundaries with others. Let them know your response time, let them know that you do/do not check emails on weekends or nights. Let them know when they CAN reach you - and stick to that. Inform your family. Do NOT go around sneaking in and out to respond to the world around you. Ask for structured time, stick to that structured time and when you're not IN that structured time - be present. Take time to check in with your family. Tell them what your goal with your business, work, etc. is and have them help you make it work. Half the battle is having them understand why you need what you need - and helping you get there. ALSO give them permission to say that does not work for them. This takes TIME undoing habits, retraining those around you, reminding yourself and others how you need to be present. It won't happen over night. The pull to do it all but never be present is strong. I am right here alongside you in the arena fighting this battle, too. I am cheering for you AND doing my best to be present with my family when I'm with them because they're too important not to be.

It's been pretty easy to find literary fiction to read, but I'm interested in reading some science fiction and fantasy novels with a feminist slant. I haven't had much luck finding them unless they are YA novels (I've read a few but to be completely honest YA just doesn't do it for me). Any recommendations? Thanks! --Genevive   2. Hello Ladies! I am hoping you can help me find a good book for my father to read on his well-deserved vacation at the beginning of December. He said he really wants to relax and so wants something light-hearted. I’ve realized that when I want a nice light-hearted read I normally reach for YA, which I have a hard time picturing him reading. I was already thinking of suggesting Becky Chambers and Lincoln in the Bardo (I realize the latter isn’t necessarily light-hearted but it just seems so up his alley I couldn’t resist). Some books I know he’s enjoyed in the past include Cutting for Stone, various books by Ken Follet, and A Walk In the Woods. Something humorous would probably be good. Thank you for your help and your wonderful show! I look forward to it every week! --April   3. Jenn and Amanda - I've been realizing over the past year that my closest friendship is with a toxic person and I need to cut ties. We've been friends since college, were in each other's weddings, and have become moms together so it's hard for me to walk away, even though I know it's what's best for my own growth and health. It's left me feeling very lonely so I'm looking for books to fill the lonely void and help me heal (as only books can do). I enjoy most character-driven fiction, as long as there is one likable character to root for, and memoirs that read like fiction (i.e. The Glass Castle). Thanks so much! --Kate   4. Hi! I love your podcast, you guys are great! Like with many people, my family can be hard to shop for. Think you can help with my brother? Some of his favorite authors are Neil Gaiman, Alan Moore, Matthew Woodring Stover, and Caitlín R. Kiernan. He is also a stickler for facts--he likes fantasy/horror elements, but if there are incorrect facts about real things (especially about history and politics) he'll decide a book is rubbish even if it's otherwise a good book. This means shopping for him can be anxiety producing. Help! --Anxious Sister   5. Hey Jenn, Please help--the love of my literary life is Sarah Addison Allen and I've read everything she's written (including the free shorts on Amazon) multiple times and I find myself needing more books that feel like getting a warm hug. There is something about the pacing and the combination of unique characters and circumstances (a grumpy apple tree? Awesome! Giants? Great! Wallpaper with moodswings? Love it!). I also love that while there are some problems and conflicts, they are not so dark as to overshadow the entire novel and while urgent in the moment, don't detract from that warm-hug feeling. The light touches of magic in otherwise realistic fiction are the thing that keeps me wanting more. Note: please not Beatriz Williams or Alice Hoffman. They keep getting recommended via goodreads, amazon and NoveList and for the life of me, I just can't seem to connect to their characters. Also, I know that you're backlogged, so if you'd rather answer in an email than on the show, that is absolutely fine--I will be grateful for your recommendations whenever and wherever you can provide them. Thanks!! --Abbey   6. Hi! I've been dealing with an undiagnosed chronic illness that has left me housebound for some time now. Reading about other disabled people's experiences has been eye-opening and comforting in that I'm not alone, but many of the books I've read (So Lucky, Invisible, Sick) have been difficult to read because they've touched on a lot of raw wounds. I'd really like to read something more lighthearted, but still featuring disability/chronic illness as a major plot point. I'm open to any genre, but own voices only please! Thank you! --Rachel   7. Just an FYI my name is pronounced Crystal. I am an avid reader of many genres. I find it hard to find mystery novels that I enjoy. I have read all of the Maisie Dobbs series and am a true lover of Sherlock Holmes. I would like recommendations of mysteries with interesting characters that don't seem pulpish. I hope that makes sense. We talk about RZA’s take on artistry, diversification and how lucky we are to be creative people in a position to leverage our talent to spread joy and also gain personally.  This interview is one of my all-time proudest moments because I love the RZA, but it also led to The Golden Chamber Mixtape Hosted by Wu-Tang Clan (Google it) which Vik and I (as the Lovesoul DJ’s) did with DJ Fricktion.  Oh yeah, we also get into how Fricktion’s crazy a$$ came up with the idea and how we got the name and so much more. Plus: John explains what to do if you swear on a podcast (phew).So...are you ready to ignite? What happens behind the scenes when you pitch EOF:EOF receives 100+ pitches per month, plus about 5-10 recommendations per month from past guests (which often get to skip the queue) John's VA does the initial pitch triage, and asks people to fill out an application. 70% of would-be guests don't take the time to fill out the application, so those that do are seen as more serious,  and have a leg up!Every once in a while, John gets a personally written pitch that he fully reads--which are clearly not boiler plate. These pitches totally skip the line.John's defines an expert as: someone who has taken the time to learn about a topic, and who is willing to share that knowledge with others. (Sound like you?).
