Dave Rossum & Marco Alpert of Emu Systems & Rossum-Electro join the podcast for a conversation about the EMU legacy, SP1200, and their current eurorack projects. Like, Subscribe and share. About Dave... Starting with his co-founding of E-mu Systems, Dave provided the technological leadership that resulted in what many consider the premier professional modular synthesizer system. The E-mu Modular System combined superlative analog design, innovative use of digital technology, and unparalleled physical construction and reliability. In the following years, Dave and E-mu turned their attention to affordable professional digital sampling with the Emulator keyboards and racks. The Emulator II in particular established sampling as the leading music technology of its time, becoming a standard fixture in professional studios worldwide and appearing on innumerable hit records and film soundtracks. SP-1200It was followed by the Emax samplers, the legendary SP-12 and SP-1200 sampling drum machines, the Proteus sound modules and the Morpheus Z-Plane Synthesizer. In addition, Dave also developed and licensed technology that enabled the creation of many iconic synthesizers, including the Oberheim 4-Voice, the Sequential Circuits Prophet 5 and, via his design of many of the SSM music ICs, instruments from Korg, Kawai, and many more.

Peace!
Show notes:Syl: Vanilla ice was actually from DallasMW: Even being in that space took a certain amount of courageSyl: He was the only white dude in that club! There wasn't a dispersementhe was the only white dude there!MW: hahahaSyl: his haircut Idk what to call itMW: It was the 80s cut, quintessential late 80s he was intothe culture it wasn't like he was just enamored he lived in that urbanarea and was comfortable with that vibe at that timeif you look at how he came up no one looked at him as a fraudSyl: well he was a dancer and a rapper far far far across a distantocean 2nd.Dj Earthquake was part of the scene at the Club City LightsVanilla ice on a dare from a friend of his entered the competitionhe started beat boxing and dancing them moves and wow'd peopleMW: He was doing hip hop busking being in the mall rapping, beat boxingand when u say cultural appropriation I would say he appreciatedthe culture. Up to that moment of getting on stage he took it seriouslyat that time…just like to the average listener when it comes to musicor art they don't understand it they just say i can't do that SYL and back in that daay hip hop was a subculture there wasn't a crossover i mean Run DMC and Aerosmeith had their crossover The thing was people don't realize the backstory about Vanilla Icehe was already being recognized winning moto contests getting recognized MW he was a serious dude, even tho he seems kind of cornyhe has a certain demeanor and charisma, when we talk about it-factorshe has that and when other people think he is kind of corny to himselfhe's the shit and for a while he was a shit Syl: He opened for MC Hammer 2 Live Crew MW: That's a perfect comparison he's like a white MC Hammer Syl he opened for Public Enemy in the 89 tour, PE wanted to signVanilla Ice - you don't hear about this MW: Bestie boys got signed for a reason they wanted to exploit thatat that time you coudln't perofrm for a white audience hip hop wasn't atthat level yet…MC Hammer was one of those acts that could crossover to white crowds. PE wasn't exactly a cross over but they strucka chord to the pooint where they became a major group…white pple listened to them Syl: because it was political, audience it was more relevant to whiteaudiences than I grew up in the projectsMW you talkin about social issues Syl right and when you look at this kinda one of the hidden features of whyIce popped out. It actually goes back to audio engineeringIt goes back to the development of how hip hop was created And Vanilla Ice wouldn't have popped off at that moment in timeif we didn't have the introduction of the SP1200 ans the Akai MPCwhich allowed for a quantum leap of sampling and what was happeningwas DJ Earthquake ReSampled Queen's UnderPressure which Vanilla Icehad to pay royalities on like 85% later on for that hook but that allowed the crossover to Queens fans whether or not they realized it consciosuly it sounded familiar MW: It's interesting because previously Hip hop in itself is a sample music b/c even taking breakbeats from soul and funk In its essence hip hop started as a sampling muisic But they type of stuff they are sampling isn't whole songs til that good times track came out then they start3ed ripping whole loops That was hard to do back then they talk about a band coming in having to play that whole position of that funk song live to record that That MPC made it so you could chop up those loops I personally own oneit's 1 of the greatest tools in hip hop So he could the sample threw some drum beats on it it was kind of a flukelike most musical steps no one was sampling white music like that. . . Syl: the music video didn't come out when the song came outthe video was filmed in Deep Ellum in Dallas not far from Austin, Texasand no one knew he was white until the video came out imaginethe whip lash . . .MW i think the things that he went thru are skewed to the perspectiveif you live in a suburban area…let me put it like this way I wantedto play football one year..it costs $110 My mother couldn't pay the feeI worked at subway so i could pay the equipment feewhen we talk about moto cross it cost money for the bikecost money to get to the events, where did that money come fromare you telling me Vanilla Ice was rich at 16? Maybe not but he hadaccess to wealth Syl: It was Dallas Morning News that started taking Vanilla Ice downwhen they started saying wait hold up lets look at this You went to school with 2 Live Crew? No that was a lieYou won 1000s of trophies for Team Honda? Morray has reported that isa lieMW: It's a lieSyl: you did NOT win 1000s of trophies for moto cross competitions sothis fictional biography…rappers exaggerate MW: in his defense he didn't want the bio released he didn't write it upand he didn't think it was going to be a big deal..but authenticity in hip hop isa big deal like.. Syl: I think the nail in the coffin for that particular article was revealinghis gov name was Robert Van Winkle which is not a rapper name hahanow if he went with a humpty dumpty approach and went with MC Van Winklemaybe he could have got something on a school house rock levelgoing on MW: That was the thing he was being marketed to be sold better…The way they dressed him up and paraded He was talented in his own right…he wasn't the worst rapper of all time Syl: who is the worst rapper of all time? MW: Idk just because it's generic… Syl: The Source followed up with hip hop being too white washed saying unless it's poppy it wasn't going to hit MW: that's the way they had to introduce hip hop to a white audienceblack people did records that were considered too raunchy and were redoneby white people to sound more white to sound more polite it's sad to seethat happen and sad to see that happen in a new culture you've created..it's like they are trying to snatch our culture away from us once againand try to tell us you can't be popular doing this thing we're going to create a version of this that is safe and cleanaltho Vanilla ice was kind of a B boy rapper a drug dealer in the hoodFrom Da Jump www.fromdajump.com

You want legend talk? Like true “foundational hip-hop” talk? We got you. Welcome Pete Rock to the People's Party. The conversation starts hot and doesn't let up. It's all about Pete and CL Smooth, true stories of rap's first era, love for vintage crews like Heavy D and the Boyz, and tales from Pete's many incredible collaborations. This is the gem for the true hip-hop heads. Those who want to know the pieces of the puzzle that are foundational to the culture itself. Those who want to sit at the feet of one of the culture's grand masters. If that's you… well, it shouldn't take much convincing.
N8NOFACE has been making music for almost 30 years, but for over 20 of those years he made it in secrecy. His first love, east coast rap music, inspired him to order an SP1200 from the back of a magazine when there wasn't a single music store in his home state of Arizona selling them. For years he toiled away learning how to make beats and rap, but never showed anyone. Even when he and his brother both owned hip hop shops in Tucson, hosting open mics and battle events in store, he still kept it secret. Finally, when DJ Kutmah heard some of his songs on his brother's Myspace page, he was pushed into playing his first ever performance and hasn't looked back since. His former group, Crimekillz, is where he started to develop his signature synth punk style. They had glimpses of success in the early to mid 2010's, but it always seemed as though self-sabotage kept them from reaching the promised land. Recently N8's solo career has been seeing an uptick in notoriety and fandom, and he credits it to his newfound sobriety and, surprisingly, Covid-19. Be sure to check out his latest record Bound To Let You Down out now on Eyeball Records. Tune in to hear us talk about growing up in coyote country (not the animal kind), owning a record store, and recently becoming a grandfather(!?). -Lee --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
True House Stories Podcast with special guests by Lenny Fontana
TRUE HOUSE STORIES W/ DAVID MORALES #027 - PART 1 With a real passion for music in his veins from a very young age, from very humble beginnings, David Morales was destined to follow his dream and took the opportunity to play music at any given chance. David's very first gig was playing at the Loft for Lulu His first regular Djing spot started at Ozone Layer where Lulu was the hostess. Still working a job in a restaurant, David was fortunate to meet Mike Brady from Paradise Garage and was invited to play at this incredible NYC club in 1983, where he invited legends such as Captain Black and Jocelyn Brown to the party. With huge names currently on the lineup at Paradise Garage -no one yet knew of David.... But they soon would!! In 1985, David started to work in music production -David Cole and Bruce Flowers being pivotal to David's producing career. Nicky Holloway and Pete Tong invited David to play at Estoria, only 40 minutes into his set, he was asked to stop playing just as he was getting into his set, for Jomanda to perform!! David set up Defmix productions but with very little direction, experience and to just be landed in the midst of music industry, he had to learn the business very quickly in order to succeed. Making multiple hit records, but never truly reaping the rewards for his hard work and commitment, David worked day in day out making 2-3 tracks every week. David Morales was a true grafter and his passion was what kept him inspired to continue working relentlessly. Despite not earning what he deserved he continued to follow his dream. Remixing is where David found his fortune in the industry. Frankie knuckles and David worked on so many remixes, in fact rewriting entire tracks and even changing the titles of the tracks, David simply received a flat fee and did not gain the recognition he deserved. Mariah Carey “Dream Lover”, was his 1st superstar track remix. At first, he questioned the track due to it being extremely commercial (at the same time rejecting remix work for legends such as David Bowie) this remix became one of the songs David Morales is so famous for. David also had the incredible opportunity to work with Todd Terry, a born musician, no need for any equipment - the SP1200 was the weapon!! David is all for advances in technology and plugins etc. - his motto- simply work them to the absolute max. Having worked on remixes for Michael and Janet Jackson, you would expect David to be living the high life - the truth is it involved signing non disclosures, bag checks etc. - security was paramount, not quite the fairytale you would have imagined. Working alongside Aretha Franklin - one of David's biggest fears was -'how do you give constructive criticism to such an absolute legend'???? In the words of Aretha - Less is more and more is less. She absolutely embraced his opinion and gained her respect for his honesty. Julio Iglesias was another star that David worked with. Giving his mother a dream come true, David arranged for Julio to call his mother to say ‘hi' was just one of the many hi lights of working with such legendary musicians. Donna Summer was David's absolute no 1 idol and working with Jocelyn Brown was, yet another dream come true - to David, Jocelyn was an incredible legend he never imagined he would ever work with. Much to David's dismay he was arrested in Japan during his career. How was that for David?? At 57 years of age - truly mortifying, listen to David's very raw and open account of coping in a Japanese prison where no-one spoke his language and all of his basic rights were taken away. An experience that will live with David forever but taught him about the importance of the simplicity of life - Health and Freedom. One of the memories David has about this true horror was when a prison officer recognized David and played his music - which really helped him get through this ordeal.

Dave Rossum has quite a history. From helping to start up E-mu Systems, managing its acquisition by Creative Labs (and working with them through a 10-year run of amazing designs) and the creation of Rossum Electro-Music, Dave has been designing the heck out of music instruments. I was really excited when the Synthtopia folks we able to pull this interview together, since I've been a fan of E-mu devices for a long, long time, and have been mesmerized by the new modules he's been developing. In our chat, we talk in detail about the development of the early E-mu modular system, the move into sampling technology, the effect of the Creative purchase and the technology developments behind the Proteus lineup. We also go into detail about Dave's design work with the new series of modules that he's working on, as well as the upcoming sampler module that has everyone humming. This was a lot of fun, and super-educational; I learned an awful lot about the various technological advances behind samplers and sample-based systems. Given my renewed interest in sampling, that was very interesting to me. But his views on analog and digital modular designs, and his willingness to take on impossible projects and find a way to make 'em work - it was inspirational. Enjoy!
