Stage 6: Tests, Allies, and EnemiesAnd it's within this unknown that the protagonist faces many tests and meets their allies and enemies.1. TestsWithin the Hero's Journey structure, this stage is a vital part of your protagonist's journey.Conflict is everything. Without conflict, there's no story, no story arc, and no character exploration. So while this is a stage represented in every Hero's Journey structure application, it's also a necessary component to any story that you tell — using the Hero's Journey structure or not.Your story doesn't merely entail a character dealing with a single conflict.Paul has an obvious test. How does he get his daughter returned to the family home? But is that it? No. Paul has to navigate the custody court, the machinations of the legal system, and the ongoing tests to endure dealing with each one of these barriers.2. AlliesAlong with the tests that your protagonist faces, they're going to need some help along the way. That's where introducing allies comes into play.Initially, both of Paul's attorney's seem likely allies, how reliable they are and how long they last though will be questionable. However, Paul's family, mom, dad, and sister will prove to be reliable allies. Perhaps even Kaitrin can be viewed as an ally despite her tender age.3. EnemiesWith the mention of enemies, we come full circle within this Hero's Journey stage. Enemies are there to test the protagonist. They offer the necessary conflict that should be present within all stories. While allies give us — and the protagonist — hope, enemies challenge that hope and create a more enthralling plot.It might seem obvious that Anne, Paul's wife, is an enemy. But is that it? What about the intriguing Silena character? What antagonistic role does she play? Many stories feature an antagonist but Paul has at least two: Anne and Silena, not to mention additional enemies in the village Court system and hostility that he has to face head on. How to best tap into the idea potential of our work teams?  We know that the success of the organisation will be determined by the quality of the ideas we generate and the capacity to execute those excellent insights.  Gathering folk around the white board and having a free form pitchfest of ideas is more often destructive than creative.  Dominant personalities always hog the white board content. There is usually only one speed of idea creation being employed – fast, which is the easiest but most lightweight.    Researchers are questioning whether the group idea creation model actually works best at all, so how should we involve the team when producing ideas?    Here are the steps: ensure there is a facilitator to run the activity so the process is followed correctly.  Use Green Light/Red Light thinking to maximise the opportunity to build up our idea bench strength.  In the Green Light phase we promote idea free flow without impediment.  This means no critiquing of ideas as they emerge.    Green Light thinking moves through seven stages.   Stage One - SILENCE.  We ask that each person sit quietly and think.  As they capture an idea, they write it clearly on a Post It note.  The individuals in the team attach their Post It notes to the whiteboard, again in total silence.  We are seeking quantity not quality of ideas at this stage   Stage Two - the team go through the Post It notes on the white board together and rearrange them into columns of similar topics.  The column is given a topic name and this is written at the top of the column.   Stage Three - each of the teams share what they have come up with and present their columns and ideas.  Clarification questions are allowed but no evaluation, just cross-pollination of ideas between the groups.   Stage Four - the groups go back to their seats and more time is given again for individual silent thoughts of potential ideas, based on the stimulation of other's ideas and the fact of more time to go deeper.  As ideas emerge these are added to the whiteboard.   Stage Five - the team members share their newest ideas with each other, place them into the existing columns or create new ones and then present them to the other groups, as before.   Stage Six - more time is given to work independently, again stimulated by the ideas generated by the other teams.  The final group of Post Its are attached to the whiteboard, the ideas are explained and then categorized into the existing columns or new columns are created.   Stage Seven - the team members present their newest ideas to the other groups as before.   Stage Eight - Now is time to start Red Light thinking and decide which ideas have the most high priority to take forward and so we need to make some judgements at this point. The keys to success are removing hierarchy and criticism from the idea generation process.  Once generated, the selection of highest priority items provides the final approver with the richest possible harvest of ideas from the total group.

Memory Health Made Easy

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 12, 2020 89:01

Today’s fitness industry looks at exercise as a means of improving and maximizing performance.  We see large biceps and stronger legs as indicators of a healthy body.  This pushes us to have a compartmentalized view of movement that focuses on specialized activities, where we have a leg day or a chest day.  But having a gym or simple fitness-oriented view limits your ability to be resilient, to be well-rounded. Basically it limits the potential of the exercises to challenge your cognitive abilities. Compare that with how “we” used to move, for example, our hunter-gatherer ancestors.  Their movement isn’t just about working on one muscle group, one routine. A diverse and varied range of movement triggers brain engagement. It allows our brains to grow and mature new neurons leading to better memory health. This mindset about exercise and movement needs to change.  It’s no longer about intensity. Having an awareness of the unique and challenging demands we can impose on our bodies to squeeze out more opportunities for neurogenesis is key. If we understand how neurogenesis works and how to prompt it, we have a better chance of preventing avoidable memory loss.   Our brains can continue to build and maintain a rich network of neurons if we understand how the human body as an organism works. We have the chance to tap into this power if we want to. The truth is, we are meant to create and live a formidable life. In this show you’ll learn about: How we can squeeze more out of physical exercise by adding cognitive aspects to leverage neurogenesis Putting stress on the body through unique and challenging demands The phenomenon of movement poverty increasing our risks of sedentary dementia In today’s show, you will learn how to combine cognitive aspects to physical exercise to leverage neurogenesis and build a rich and dense hippocampus resilient to change. Listen To The Podcast Now.    About Our Guest Matt Rutley is a natural movement specialist in Australia. He is a bush skills instructor and the owner and head coach of health and fitness center, Stage Six. As one of the leading experts on moving your body the way it was designed to move, he has worked with clients of all ages including sporting teams, professionals, and Olympic athletes.     The Case for Neurogenesis Getting Interested In Functional Movement Exercise and Its Role Matt shares his childhood of doing a lot of physical and mental work, and his exposure later on to physical training.  Opening his own gym to give people the opportunity to do the things he was doing as a child led him to realize the backward approach to physical fitness and health. Diving into research into the human organism led to more questions. Our physical and mental well-being aren’t separate. What Is Critical To Be Able To Navigate Our Will We are the drivers to fixing our problems. Having an inquisitive mind is important to understand why our body works and reacts to certain ways. If you don’t impose a demand on your body, it will not get good at it. This is the principle Specific Adaptation to Imposed Demands (SAID).  Your body adapts to what you ask it to adapt to. Be specific about what you want, why you need it, and how the two correlate. Have an awareness of our physical capabilities and an understanding of what you want. How To Get Better Transference In Life There are different kinds of fitness.  We need to have a sustainable approach when it comes to exercise rather than being on edge all the time just to maximize performance. Most people don’t really have a good idea of whether they might be able to do something. Movement is the reason our brains exist. Exercise boosts brain activity.  Leveraging Movement To Boost Our Hippocampus Movements that are complex and adaptive maximize neurological engagement. The lack of disease in Blue Zones and hunter-gatherer populations.  Challenging ourselves more each time rather than getting used to a routine allows us to squeeze a bit more of the opportunities. Gamification and play-based activities provide a huge opportunity though there is resistance because of people’s perception that exercise is punishment. Changes happen when we put our body under stress to push the limits. Stress signals changes in our body. But too much stress leads to injury. Stress applied should be about purpose and application instead of reinforcing the no pain, no gain mindset.  Understanding why you need to go through that struggle allows you to be informed about the type of struggle and dosage needed.  The Problem With Mundane, Everyday Tasks Movements that are complex and adaptive maximize neurological engagement. If you have only one challenge, your body gets used to it.  To be adaptable, we have to constantly shift the goalpost. High-intensity training essentially works to outdo inactivity, but the intensity is too much. It’s better to spread out burning calories throughout the day in many different ways and with different stimuli and tasks. This is why people during our hunter-gatherer era are healthier. Lowering The Risks For Sedentary Dementia Use an app to set a timer to get up and stretch. Uprooting ourselves entirely from our comfort zones would only make our bodies resistant to change. As our body adjusts, add a new demand that you can layer on.  Adding variety such as changing the route or adding a different range of motion will add a new demand. Be brutally honest, practical, and realistic when goal setting.  Aim for consistency and frequency. Cast a lens around a 6-8 out of 10 level of challenge to drive neuroplasticity or brain change.  We are meant to be very formidable for life.  Harness the Power of Neurogenesis Do the things you want to get better at.  Things will only get worse if you don’t do anything. Be patient with your body, work with it rather than against it. There’s no magic bullet, but there’s a magic process.   Previously Recommended Resources   Articles:     Psychobiotics in mental health, neurodegenerative and neurodevelopmental disorders    Cheng et al, (2019) https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1021949819300158     Melancholic microbes: a link between gut microbiota and depression?    Prof T. The Cutting Edge Japan Business Show By Dale Carnegie Training Tokyo, Japan

In this way, there is no pressure on anyone.  Each person can think at their own pace, there are no power plays underway and there is no critique of what is being produced.  We are seeking quantity not quality of ideas at this stage   Stage Two - the team go through the Post It notes on the white board together and rearrange them into columns of similar topics.  Again, there is no evaluation or commentary on the content, just some clarification as to what was written down, if it is not clear to other members of the group. The power of these seven stages of Green Light thinking is that we are seeking the widest possible selection of ideas and at the same time allowing people the freedom to go deeply with their ideas.  In Stage Four, few will be able to come with any new ideas and that is okay, some think faster than others and some think more deeply than others.  In Stage Six, this is even more pronounced with most people coming up with zero new ideas.  There will be a few though who will have ideas and often these are the most valuable ideas.   Now is time to start Red Light thinking. Stage One - the ideas that have been arranged in columns are evaluated and reset into priority order.  There will be debate and discussion at this point and choices will be made.  Stage Two - the top 10 ideas are presented to the other groups.  Stage Three - the individual groups take another look at their priority list and re-evaluate based on what they have heard from the other groups. Stage Four - the top three ideas of each group are picked up for a group wide discussion, about which ideas will be actioned.  Stage Five - the finalist ideas are put to the decision-maker for funding or adoption.   The keys to success are removing hierarchy and criticism from the idea generation process.  Once generated, then the selection of highest priority items provides the final approver with the richest possible harvest of ideas from the total group.     Action Steps   Use a facilitator to run the event Follow the process of separating the idea generation stage from the evaluation phase Alternate individual work with group work Don't panic if most people tap out early, keep going to reap the rewards of deeper thought processes from the few
