But when they began their set by igniting pyrotechnic sparklers, a fire broke out and ripped up the walls before quickly spreading to the rest of the building. The book "Trial By Fire" takes the reader by the lapels and propels them trough the actual fire and the grisly aftermath. The author also sheds light on some inaccurate local reporting and political maneuvering, that was uniquely Rhode Island. So many things had to go wrong at the same time in this case and they did. Uncharted: Crime and mayhem in the music industry

When you go to a big, loud rock show, you want a spectacle…lights, lasers, special effects, and, if all goes well, lots of pyro…flames, explosions, smoke bombs—they all add to the theatricality of it all. But if you're going to blow stuff up and have open flames onstage, you gotta be careful…not only do you have to abide by health and safety regulations, local laws, and local building codes, you have to be very aware of the venue itself. Can it handle your pyro?... If it can't—or if you don't police people who insist of lighting up their own munitions—the results can be deadly…and so far in the 21st century, there have been too many of these incidents. This is the story of one particular night in west Warwick, Rhode Island…it should have been a typical night of metal at a nondescript 500-person venue…instead, it was one of the worst building fires in American history. I'm Alan Cross and this is “Uncharted: Crime and Mayhem in the Music History”…and this is the scary story of the station nightclub fire… Learn more about your ad choices. Insurance vs the Station Nightclub Fire Without giving my age away entirely, I will admit…I'm a child of the 80s. I've been lucky enough to have seen several of my favorite 80s artists perform their greatest hits.  It never crossed my mind that something could go wrong during a concert and I might be in danger. But on February 2, 2003, more than 400 people who also loved the 1980s attended a concert at the Station Nightclub in West Warwick, Rhode Island. But that night, something went wrong. A fire broke out at the concert, resulting in 100 deaths and 230 injuries. When bad things like this happen—insurance should respond. That's what it's there to do. But what if the people responsible don't have enough insurance to compensate those affected by the disaster? Well, then things get complicated. This is a story about how small decisions can result in tragedy; how fire spreads faster than you imagine; and how the people who are responsible are sometimes not the people who are held accountable. February 20th, 2003. It's been 20 years since the Station Nightclub Fire. It's hard to believe that much time has gone by. And still, every year people tell me that they knew someone who was there that night. Or that they themselves were supposed to go that night.  And even after 20 years, I still meet people who had no idea that I was there that night. That I somehow miraculously survived this tragedy. ***TRIGGER WARNING*** Death and Injury from Trampling, Fire, and Smoke Inhalation On the evening of February 20th, 2003, hundreds of people had filled The Station Nightclub in Warwick, Rhode Island.  They were all there for a concert headlined by Great White, a rock band that formed in the late 70s, and has been together ever since, even though some members have changed over the years.  Before the band was even able to finish their first song though, a fire ignited that quickly spread throughout the venue.  100 people lost their lives that night, and 230 more were injured.  132 people escaped without any physical injuries, but the trauma from the night remains with them. In their last episode of 2022, Katie and Liz share the details of the devastating and deadly Station Nightclub Fire of 2003 in West Warwick, Rhode Island. A cold February night brought over 400 patrons to the club to watch the performance of heavy metal band Great White. Within seconds of the band arriving on stage, their tour manager set off unapproved pyrotechnics, which quickly ignited the acoustic foam surrounding the stage. Panic and confusion ensued quickly with a massive crowd crush occurring, as well as the release of poisonous gases from the flames. This event remains the 4th deadliest nightclub fire in American history, with exactly 100 perishing from the tragedy.  --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/truecrimene/support

Tom shares his story of how he made it out of the Station Fire and its impact on his life and the community.   On the night of Feb 20, 2003, a deadly fire ripped through The Station - a local bar and music venue in the small Rhode Island town of West Warwick.  Even now, 18 years later, it remains an emotionally-charged topic. And for 18 years there remains a great deal of speculation about the events leading up to, on the night of, and what came after the fire. People hold different feelings about what happened and who is responsible. There was no trial that could have helped set the record straight so the debate rages on.Next episode, I speak to John Laurenti, former Music Director and DJ at WHJY in Providence, about the Station, his friend and fellow DJ - the late Mike "The Doctor" Gonsalves, and the impact on the community.  This is part of a three part series on the Station Nightclub Fire... .. .. .. .. ..New merch store now open at crimeofthetruestkind.com/shopCrime of the Truest KindHosted by Anngelle WoodOnline: crimeofthetruestkind.comEpisode 12 on YouTubeFollow the showFacebook: facebook.com/crimeofthetruestkindInstagram: instagram.com/crimeofthetrustkindTwitter: twitter.com/truestkindListen on all major podcast platforms + Subscribe, Rate, Review.Donate: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/truestkindThank you to Andrew King and Joe "OnlyOne" Kowalski - their music appears in this episode Support the show (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/truestkind)

Over the course of this series of episodes, I wanted to peel back the layers of what a mess The Station Fire truly was, how we are still looking for answers, and how we are still clearing the debris of misinformation. The Station Fire was 18 years ago. The fire killed 100 people, hundred of others were injured physically, countless others were damaged emotionally. In this bonus sized episode I speak to friend and colleague, John Laurenti.  We worked together at WZLX in Boston and, as you will hear, we have a long history and strong connections to New England radio. John has worked at WAAF, WBOS, WODS, WHEB, WGIR, and was at WHJY in Providence for 17 years. He was friends with Mike Gonsalves, the WHJY DJ known as Doctor Metal, who was one of 100 who died at the Station. We talk about his memories of Doc, the venue, the fire, the impact on the community, the part live radio plays in times of disaster, the evolution of rock, and we name check about 20 radio people throughout. We spoke on the weekend of the 18th anniversary. This is our conversation, our long conversation. It was even longer. Hundreds were trapped inside the Station, a Rhode Island roadhouse bar, hosting a fading rock band. The night's draw "Great White" a hair band from the eighties, took the stage. The band set off pyrotechnics  inside the wood framed bar. A local cameraman filmed the event. It took him 72 seconds to exit the bar, few made it out after him. The acoustic foam on the ceiling acted as a type of napalm. Toxic smoke and intense heat, ultimately killed 100 patrons and injured hundreds more. Some of the injuries were so gruesome, it made local reporters sick to their stomachs. Was this an accident or was criminality involved? if so, who was liable? The case was not as clear cut as originally reporting suggests. The media maelstrom took on a life of its own, the local newspaper seemingly violated their own standards repeatedly, was it because one of the owners's was a famed local reporter?? In this episode, The Weekend Wrap-up host, Kevin Ferrara speaks about the importance and really, the necessity of fire protection and emergency services performing crew inspection through commercial facilities within their jurisdiction.Recent incidents have shown that had a thorough crew inspection, or building walk-through been performed, the outcome might have been prevented.Supporting the topic, Kevin speaks about the recent Surfside, Florida apartment complex collapse, the Station Nightclub fire, and the Morris, Illinois abandoned paper mill fire where crews found the building was not what they thought, turning out to be a lithium battery storage facility.  Kevin also recaps a previous episode where he and his guests spoke about suicide awareness and prevention and how it is extremely important for everyone to feel comfortable speaking and listening to each other when feeling stressed. And with nearly every episode, Kevin touches on PFAS and the risks associated with exposure.  Kevin talks about PFAS blood testing and how the GAO recently published a report on what they found within the DoD regarding PFAS remediation.AFSO21 Radio, The Weekend Wrap-up is ranked in the top 15 Fire Protection and Safety podcasts by Feedspot. To learn more about Kevin and AFSO21, please check out www.afso21.comLinks to references in this episode:Surfside Building Collapse (Credit WPBF News)Morris, IL Paper Mill Fire (Credit ABC 7 Eyewitness News)GAO Firefighting Foam Chemicals ReportAFSO21 Your leadership, management, and fire protection and emergency services consulting solutionFire Dept. This episode is dedicated to the first responders from the towns of Scituate, West Warwick, Providence and Coventry, Rhode Island who selflessly ran towards the danger in February 2003. The fire at the Station Nightclub is the definitive fire of the 21st century. While a local news crew was inside filming a video on fire safety during a Great White concert, a fire broke out behind the stage. 100 lives were lost. Countless injured, there were a ton of questions surrounding this horrific tragedy in the winter of 2003. Scott James, a veteran reporter set out on a 15 year journey to find the truth behind the deadliest single event in the history of Rhode Island. There was no trial that could have helped set the record straight so the debate rages on.Special guest, Tom Stewart - New England-based comedian and host of My Paranormal Story podcast - myparanormalstory.net. On February 20, 2003, one of the deadliest fires in American history took place at the Station Nightclub in West Warwick, Rhode Island.  The pandemonium started when the band Great White's pyrotechnics ignited the nightclub, killing 100 people and devastating the lives of hundreds more.  My guest tonight is bestselling author and three-time Emmy Award-winning journalist Scott James, whose new book, Trial By Fire investigates all the central figures with firsthand accounts, interviews, and court documents. Scott explores the rush to judgment about what happened that left the victims, their families, and a community desperate for justice. Although the fire itself lasted minutes, the search for the truth would take years. On February 20th 2003 the Station Nightclub, in West Warwick, RI caught fire during a concert by the band Great White. Stage fireworks set off by the band quickly ignited flammable foam on the walls. Within 90 seconds the club was a blazing inferno. Anyone who did not escape by then perished in the most horrific way. In October 2020, Emmy Award winning TV reporter and author, Scott James published his book TRIAL BY FIRE: A devastating tragedy, 100 lives lost and a 15 year search for the truth. In his book, Mr. James presents vivid accounts of that night through the eyes of survivors. He also presents evidence not seen to date. Some of it, exculpatory to those charged, was not presented to the Grand Jury. He also presents, for the first time, interviews with the principal players surrounding the tragedy. One of his goals in examining this horror was to help us determine…The Station Night Club Fire…Crime or accident. Scott James joins us on Murder Most Foul.
