In July of 1943 Dupont Cavalcade of America saluted 167 years of American freedom and presented "Listen to the People" by Stephen Vincent Benet and starring Ethel Barrymore. "Listen to the People" sounded a prophetic warning when it was first presented on July 4th 1941 and in corporation with the Council For Democracy over the NBC Blue Network, and in this rebroadcast we hear it in retrospect. Given the situation in America and the world today, this program has a message that is as valuable now as it was then... maybe even more so. Connor and Jack dig into an excerpt from the epic, book-length poem "John Brown's Body" by Stephen Vincent Benet. In the late 1920s the book was a mega-best seller and won the 1929 Pulitzer Prize for Poetry. They discuss the implications of the poem's popularity, other literary and artistic works that re-tell history, and the durable cultural myths John Brown's story exemplifies. Professor Kozlowski discusses Stephen Vincent Benet's "The Devil and Daniel Webster" - a love letter to Irving's "The Devil and Tom Walker" which totally misses the moral point underlying Irving's story, and may inadvertently expose some of the ideological problems lying at the heart of the 20th Century's greatest atrocities.

A poem comes to a poet, and he sends it orphaned out into the world, to take its chances. It never knows who or what it might inspire or how it might become part of the world it has stepped into. Stephen Vincent Benet sent his poem, “American Names,” out into the world in 1927. Years later the first line inspired a hit song for a new movie. The last line became the title of a best-selling book, then of a song and a movie. All this and more, unexpectedly, from a couple of lines from an orphaned poem.

Originally aired 1935. A tale about a Christmas from the last war. That means World War 1. A train comes to a halt at a railroad station in France. Both Austrailian and French soldiers go on leave for the holidays. They compare notes on the similarities of each other’s armies, and the common experiences they have faced. They are joined by a American troop who is black. The three diverse troops enjoy moments of solidarity and marvel at the far reaches they had come from to be in this place together. In the post war days, the three carry souvenirs in their packs, and marvel at the stars. They turn in and dream as the train rushes through the night. Their deja vu at meeting before is explained as we peek into their dream of three other travellers who were bearing gifts, and following the star. A dramatization of the legend of the three wisemen ensues. Legend, because little is known about the wise men from scripture, and nearly all of the tale here is from tradition that surrounds their part in the Christmas story. As the wise men find the Christ child, the three soldiers awaken and compare notes about the dream they all seemed to have had. The Goblin's Bridge is one of those stories about someone making a bad deal with a supernatural being. They (the stories, not necessarily the beings) are especially common in Germany and Scandinavia and sometimes involve a person making a deal for his soul with the devil. (The type has come to America in the form of The Devil and Daniel Webster by Stephen Vincent Benet and The Devil and Tom Walker by Washington Irving. ) Sometimes, as in the present tale, the deal is broken by resorting to trickery. We presented another variation of this motif last year in our production of Racing the Troll. We come to you from Foxboro (also spelled Foxborough), Massachusetts (also spelled in many other ways, but not correctly) where we are in the middle of haunting season. And as usual this time of year, we are working as actors at a "haunted" attraction when we can fit it into our schedule. Kimberly just returned from a little trip to California, where she celebrated a very big birthday by spending it with both of her moms -- her adopted mom and her recently discovered birth mom, with whom she was spending a birthday for the first time. Also especially for her birthday, she participated in a Color Run in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. A color run means running through the streets and having people throw colored corn starch all over you. Hey, don't knock it if you haven't tried it. Happy Listening, Dennis (Narrator, Hans) and Kimberly (Goblin, Griselda)
