In this conversation, as part of our Menopause Awareness Month series, Bahar Etminan speaks with Zoe Bingley-Pullin, nutritionist, chef and author of "Eat Your Way to Healthy Hormones," about the critical role of nutrition in managing hormone health during perimenopause and menopause. They explore the importance of balancing sex hormones such as testosterone, oestrogen, and progesterone, discussing how fluctuations can impact sleep, weight gain, bone density, and muscle mass. The discussion also covers the critical role of sufficient protein intake, the benefits of specific nutrients like choline and flavonoids, and the role of supplements including DHEA, NMN, magnesium, and calcium. Zoe shares insights on adaptogenic herbs and the power of lifestyle changes in maintaining hormone health. Takeaways Hormone health is paramount during perimenopause and menopause, with nutrition playing a key role in supporting bodily changes. Balancing sex hormones such as testosterone, oestrogen, and progesterone is essential for managing symptoms like sleep disturbances, hot flushes, mood swings, and weight gain. Adequate protein intake is crucial, recommended at one gram per kilogram of body weight, incorporating a variety of sources in the diet. Key nutrients such as choline, flavonoids, and essential fats (omega-3, 6, and 9) support hormone health and cognitive function. Supplements like DHEA, NMN, magnesium, and calcium can aid hormone health, though professional guidance is recommended to determine appropriate dosages and types. Adaptogenic herbs such as ashwagandha and ginseng can help regulate hormones and manage stress effectively. Exercise, especially strength and weight training, benefits bone health and muscle mass, which are particularly important during perimenopause and menopause. Emphasising self-care and self-love is vital, as maintaining both physical and mental well-being is crucial during this significant phase. KEY TAKEAWAYS Adaptogens which can be found in mushrooms, roots and other foods when combined with coffee are incredibly powerful. Adding the right adaptogens to coffee provides you with a more sustained boost. To work, the ingredients have to be high quality. To fully access the nutrients in mushrooms you need to consume an extract. To reach more people they have kept the price relatively low while keeping the quality super high. You can reset your body clock during travel using a simple adaptogen coffee. Being authentic in all you do is important. Prioritising serving others over continually increasing your profits is more likely to make you happier. Zain also shares a very effective sleep tip.   BEST MOMENTS ‘We started adding natural ingredients to coffee for like a more sustained boost. ´ ‘The first thought of the business isn't to make loads of money and sell the business. Tero is the founder of Four Sigmatic, a nature-centric Finnish-American company specializing in functional mushrooms, superfoods, and adaptogens. Born in Finland to an agronomist father and nursing teacher mother, Tero was the 13th generation to grow up on the Isokauppila farm. There, he foraged for mushrooms and other wild foods while learning about nature at an early age. In this, he frequently channeled his middle name Tapio, the Finnish god of forests, animals, and mystics. Following his early education on the farm, Tero later completed a Degree in Chemistry and a Certificate in Plant-Based Nutrition from Cornell University. In 2006, he won a Finnish innovation award for discovering that the sought-after Japanese culinary matsutake mushrooms also grow in Finland. In 2012, he left a corporate position to start Four Sigmatic. Tero is a reputable source on superfoods, an expert on natural health, and has been a featured speaker, for example, at Summit Series, Wanderlust, Further Future, Culinary Nutrition Conference, and WME-IMG. In this episode, Tero Isokauppila speaks about how adaptogenic mushrooms improve human performance. Depending on your health goals, Tero breaks down how long you may need to try adaptogenic mushrooms to reap the health benefits. In this episode of ReInvent Healthcare, we continue on our topic about adrenal health. For this episode, we explore the role of nutrients in managing adrenal dysfunction and dive into their significance and how they can be incorporated into your clients' diet and lifestyle to nourish the adrenal glands and to effectively manage adrenal dysfunction. Listen to the full episode to learn more. IN THIS EPISODE:Nutrients for Adrenal DysfunctionNutrients play a crucial role in supporting optimal adrenal health. Adrenal glands, responsible for producing hormones like cortisol, require specific nutrients to function efficiently. Nutrients like vitamin C, B vitamins (particularly B5, B6, and B12), magnesium, and zinc are involved in adrenal hormone synthesis and regulation. Adequate intake of these nutrients can help maintain proper adrenal function, support stress response, and promote overall energy production. By understanding the impact of nutrients on adrenal health, we as healthcare practitioners can offer targeted dietary and supplementation recommendations to our patients, leading to improved adrenal function, reduced stress-related symptoms, and enhanced overall well-being.Important NutrientsVitamin C: Essential for adrenal hormone synthesis and helps regulate cortisol levels, promoting healthy stress response.B vitamins (B5, B6, and B12): Important for adrenal gland function and energy production. B5 helps convert cholesterol into many important hormones , B6 aids in neurotransmitter synthesis, and B12 supports nerve health.Magnesium: Plays a role in regulating cortisol levels and supports relaxation. Adequate magnesium levels can help reduce stress and promote better sleep.Zinc: Required for adrenal hormone production and assists in immune function. Zinc deficiency can lead to impaired adrenal function.Omega-3 fatty acids: Possess anti-inflammatory properties, which can reduce stress-induced inflammation and support adrenal health.Adaptogenic herbs: While not nutrients per se, adaptogenic herbs like ashwagandha, rhodiola, rosea, and holy basil can help modulate the body's stress response and support adrenal function. The Benefit of Probiotics and Fermented Foods Probiotics and fermented foods can provide several benefits for individuals with adrenal dysfunction. Some examples are for gut health support, stress response modulation, nutrient synthesis absorption, and reduced inflammation. Incorporating probiotics and fermented foods into the diet of your clients can offer support for adrenal dysfunction. A very outdated, but still somewhat stereotypical, view of "eating to build muscle" is to load up on peanut butter, chicken, and eggs, and to eat as frequently as possible - often past the point of fullness. My tried-and-true muscle-building diet tactics offer a framing that incorporates health and longevity - first to improve digestion and clear inflammation, and then to teach your body to use stored energy (i.e. excess body fat).
