My guest this week is Kirsten Cobabe. In this episode, Kirsten and I discuss parenting teens. There are so many parts of parenting teens, tweens, and young adults during the developmental phases that can feel tricky to us, as well as for caregivers and kids. Teens are not adults; they're also not little kids. It can be tough to know when to intervene and support, or when to back off. And some days it can feel like we are wrong no matter what we do. Let's explore what makes adolescents at this age tick, the ways we might be misunderstanding what's happening for them even when we have the best intentions, how we can best connect and communicate with them, and lots more tips for parenting teens with Teen Whisperer, Kirsten Cobabe. Kirsten is a social worker therapist turned coach who supports parents to navigate the waves of adolescence, while learning how to talk with teens by becoming authentically curious and truly present. As an advocate for families for two decades, she helps parents and teens transform their most important relationships from the inside out. She engages families in fostering rapport, cultivating conscious connections, reframing stories and restoring harmony in the home, and believes through raising our consciousness, we can raise the next generation.   Connect with Kristen: Insta: @kirstencobabe Website: www.kirstencobabe.com     ------     Episode Takeaways Episode Intro … 00:00:30 Introduction to Teen Whisperer, Kirsten Cobabe … 00:01:24 What Makes Teen & Tween Developmental Phase Tougher? … 00:04:50 Biggest Issues Teens Are Facing Today … 00:14:00 Aligning Life with Developmental Stages … 00:20:00  What Types of Anxiety is Kirsten Seeing? … 00:23:00 Fallout of Constant Connectivity … 00:27:46 Sometimes Teens Want to Talk About Big Things … 00:29:35 How to Communicate More Effectively with Teens … 00:31:13 Not Taking Teens Disconnection Personally … 00:35:35 How to Raise Tricky Topics with Teens … 00:40:00 Top Recommendation for Struggling Parents … 00:44:00 Resources & Episode Wrap Up … 00:46:15     ------     Need help with improving your child's behavior naturally? Adolescence. What a challenging time! I know I'm not alone when I say I would never want to go back to my teen years. Despite having some amazing experiences, I was an emotional mess. Parenting adolescents is challenging, too! It can bring out the best and worst in us as parents. I keep seeing how my unhealed wounds are activated when my kids move through the developmental phase in which those wounds originated. I see how easy it is for me to project my experiences onto them - if I'm not paying attention. Parenting is not for the faint of heart. In order to avoid (or minimize) passing our shit on to our kids, it's crucial that we be emotionally aware and engaged in our own healing. It also feels important to start reframing adolescence - not as something to tolerate or survive - but as a beautiful opportunity for disrupting outdated patterns in ourselves, our families, and society. My guest today absolutely adores adolescents. She gets them in ways others don't. She has the uncanny ability to translate teenage behavior to well-meaning parents. Kirsten Cobabe is a former therapist, now a teen and family coach, who has helped countless adolescents and their families understand each other more and build connection and hope. I hope you enjoy our conversation as much as I did! A little about Kirsten: Kirsten has worked with families for over twenty years, supporting parents and young people to navigate the waves of adolescence by becoming authentically curious and truly present. During her time as a social worker, she was coined the Teen Whisperer. Her ability to meet young people where they are and invite parents into this world offers a new space for connection; a modern lens of radical acceptance. Kirsten guides families into an empowered, joyful and connected life during some of the most transformative years. She has coached countless parents and caregivers, guiding them toward a recalibrating and strengthening of their relationship with their teens. While recognizing the unique struggles of this generation, Kirsten also sees the need to nourish the creative force behind each person she is fortunate to encounter. As we raise our consciousness, we can raise the next generation. Amen! If you read nothing more today, please read this statistic: When a child has one caring adult in their life, their level of confidence in the classroom increases 65%. 65%! Is that not an extraordinary statistic? Does that not give you - as an adult - a sense of having an incredible "super-power" of sorts to support the children in your life?  Today, we're joined by Tara Brown, a wise, thoughtful educator who has spent over 25 years supporting children, their parents and teachers. She's known as the Connection Coach to many. But I like to think of her as the Teen Whisperer because she brings a very special gift to relationships with our teens. In today's show, Tara talks about the importance of helping your child find their own special "spark" - that thing or things that excite them beyond their wildest dreams. She'll talk about the benefits to kids who are raised believing that they CAN find and live their dreams - and that they have parents and adults who believe in them and support them through their journey. Tara shares examples of high-profile parents who have done it right and have dared to be courageous in supporting their children. And she'll give you five specific things you can do to help light that spark! So stick around. No matter what your child's age, you'll learn a lot! References from this Podcast: Tara Brown's Website
