Follow Elle on Instagram   Summary Introduction and Background @ 0:00 Elle Nelson introduces herself as a mental performance coach who grew up playing sports, particularly soccer, and struggled with consistency and confidence as an athlete. She discovered the power of sports psychology in college and became passionate about helping other athletes develop their mental game. Overcoming Negative Self-Talk @ 6:06 Elle discusses how she had to overcome negative self-talk and stories she told herself about not being good enough. She learned to take control of her internal narrative and rewrite those limiting beliefs, which became a major key to her success. Authentic Leadership @ 11:54 As a freshman team captain, Elle initially felt a lot of pressure but learned that there are different types of leaders. She embraced her own authentic leadership style of leading by example and supporting her teammates, rather than trying to fit a mold of what a leader "should" be. Neutral Thinking and Emotional Regulation @ 23:37 Elle explains the concept of "neutral thinking" - acknowledging difficult emotions and situations without getting swept up in negativity. This allows athletes to reduce the noise and focus on what's within their control to move forward productively. Advice for Teenage Athletes and Their Parents @ 33:13 Elle shares an exercise she uses to help align the goals and priorities of young athletes and their parents. This can uncover misalignments and facilitate important conversations to better support the athlete's experience. Transferring Sports Skills to the Real World @ 37:26 Elle discusses how the skills developed through sports, such as teamwork, communication, and performing under pressure, are incredibly valuable in the professional world. She highlights how this is especially true for athletes transitioning out of sports careers. Closing Reflections @ 41:22 If Elle could go back in time and speak to her teenage self, she would tell herself to "be courageous and bet on yourself" - a powerful message of self-belief and taking control of one's own narrative.

Alaina is the author of the book Parenting Talent: The Grown-Up's Guide to Understanding and Supporting Creatively-Driven Teens and Tweens and she is the head of a practice by the same name specializing in coaching others and speaking and advising on the topic. The combination of Alaina's professional background in psychology and personal experience with her three, creatively-driven boys, has enabled her to connect the dots between the science of adolescent development and the experience of young adolescents with certain creative talents, which, importantly, are not just innate traits that, some kids have just been lucky to be born with. In part one of their conversation, Alaina and Jason talk about her inspirations for writing the book, which include her own creatively-driven boys as well as a noticeable gap in information for parents like her to know how to understand and support them, what talent really means and the level of effort it requires among youth to actualize it, how the developmental changes in early adolescence affect youth in the creative arts in specific ways, including the development of identity and dealing with the many emotions that stem from vulnerability, and the evolution of young people's awareness of their own ability to affect the world and their place in it.In part two, they talk about how parents and families can engage with creative teens and tweens in the most supportive and effective ways, including when and how to communicate, keeping pace with their rapid development to be in sync with what they need at their age and stage of development, and some of the particular issues the current generation of youth are faced with. We also talk about Alaina's next steps in helping others understand and support their own creative teens and tweens at home. I share some insights into what adult children commonly complain about their parents since they have become adults.  You'll find from listening to this episode, it's many of the same complaints parents have about their adult children.  I discuss 10 common complaints adult children have shared.  I am not inferring that a struggling relationship is caused by the parents, but maybe you will learn some things that you could do to strengthen any relationship.  Anything we can do to be part of the solution instead of the problem always helps us to feel love more often.  Practicing choosing love over judgement is the most influential choice we can make to unconditionally loving our children.  Unconditionally loving our children is the key to finding peace in our relationship with them.References:My Adult Child Won't Talk To Mehttps://www.theatlantic.com/family/archive/2019/06/my-adult-child-wont-talk-me/591274/# Five Complaints Parents and Children Have About Each Otherhttps://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/between-the-lines/202104/five-complaints-parents-and-grown-kids-have-about-each-other6 Sources of Tension Between Adult Children and Their Parents https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/tech-support/202207/6-sources-tension-between-adult-children-and-their-parents The Biggest Complaints Kids Have About Their Parents is....http://www.tfcknoxville.com/psychology-blog/the-biggest-complaint-from-kids-about-their-parents-is Have you received my new resource "3 Steps To Be Yourself Around Your Adult Children?" According to some estimates, only 5% of people in the West get the recommended amount of daily physical activity. Is the solution getting a fitness tracker, developing more discipline, or buying a piece of cardio equipment for your basement? My guest would say none of the above, and would have you think about kids playing at recess instead.Darryl Edwards is the founder of the Primal Play Method. Today on the show, we discuss the epidemic of sedentariness which besets both adults and children and why technology and willpower isn't the cure for it. Darryl then explains why a better solution to getting more movement and physical activity in our lives is rediscovering the intrinsically motivating pleasure of play. He offers suggestions on how to do that, including compiling a play history for your life, embracing “primal movements” that will get you moving like an animal and a child, and getting over the fear of looking goofy while doing so. We discuss the joys and health benefits of exploring your capabilities and environment and how to incorporate more movement into your busy adult life by making even regular activities more playful.Resources Related to the PodcastDarryl's books:Animal Moves: How to Move Like an Animal to Get You Leaner, Fitter, Stronger and Healthier for LifeMy First Animal Moves: A Children's Book to Encourage Kids and Their Parents to Move More, Sit Less and Decrease Screen TimeAoM Article: Get Fit Like a Wild Man — A Primer on MovNatAoM Article: The 10 Physical Skills Every Man Should MasterAoM Article: The Importance of Having a Physical IdentityAoM Article: 30 Days to a Better Man Day 24 — Play!AoM Podcast #508: Break Out of Your Cage and Stop Being a Human Zoo AnimalAoM Podcast #245: The Workout the World ForgotAoM Podcast #749: Let the Children Play!Connect With Darryl EdwardsPrimal Play websiteDarryl on FBDarryl on IG

Have you ever hated your own child?  While you may not want to say it out loud, sometimes parenting is just. so. hard. that this burning hatred overtakes you in a fiery blaze. And when your child is extra… extra needy, extra sensitive, extra different, extra angry, extra aggressive, extra anything, the usual parenting advice doesn't work.  Maybe you feel like a failure or a terrible mom. Meet Megan Champion, who started her podcast as a “regular mom” who needed to know she was not alone struggling to parent her out-of-the-box child. So she shares stories from other “regular” parents, who are navigating out-of-the-box kids. Megan's vulnerability and openness is refreshing in a world of glossy Instagram photos. We finally got to meet in person in May and she is just as kind and honest in person as she is online, which is a delight!  In this episode, Megan Champion and I chat about Understanding ADHD in Neurodiverse Kids and Their Parents on her podcast, On The Hard Days, where Megan validates the experience of her listeners through story-telling so that they feel seen, heard, and understood. We could've talked for hours longer! Here's just some of the things we discuss: -Postpartum anxiety and the tie to ADHD -The hyper vigilance in recognizing the same diagnosis in our kids as we have -How everyone's ADHD looks different -Building up your ADHD child -Supporting undiagnosed kids by looking for behavioral patterns -Tantrums vs. meltdowns -ADHD and setting parental boundaries Be sure to subscribe to the On The Hard Days podcast.  Megan Champion's website: www.ontheharddays.com Megan Champion's instagram: @on.the.hard.days While I'm slowing down for the summer, making space for more family time and accounting for our emergency construction project, I simply couldn't leave you hanging for the next few weeks. The school system is not always going to be working FOR your child, in fact, as my guest shares, your child's school might cut corners and not tell you. You have rights as parents but you might not even know what they are! We all need someone in our corner like attorney, Catherine Michael, who's my guest on this episode. She helps parents through school issues where their child has been injured, disciplined and/or have special needs that aren't being met at the school level. Catherine shares jaw dropping information that every parent needs to know about how the “system” works and that it's PARENTS who need to enforce the laws for their children because left unchecked, there is no penalty for schools if they don't follow the rules and regulations they are supposed to. WE need to hold them accountable. The problem is that most parents don't know where to start or what questions to ask if they're in a position where their child is being mistreated, left behind, or not being given the support they need. Parents are scared to hold schools accountable for fear the school will take it out on their child. It feels like an impossible position when your child is struggling in school. I wish I knew this information sooner; I know you will feel the same way. Please share this episode with anyone who needs to hear it too. **For Catherine's guide on Parent Advocacy, you can download it from the Parent Toolbox. www.parent-toolbox.com** About Catherine M. A Modest Proposal - Jonathan Swift - Book 3 Title: A Modest Proposal Overview: A Modest Proposal For preventing the Children of Poor People From being a Burthen to Their Parents or Country, and For making them Beneficial to the Publick, commonly referred to as A Modest Proposal, is a Juvenalian satirical essay written and published anonymously by Jonathan Swift in 1729. The essay suggests that the impoverished Irish might ease their economic troubles by selling their children as food to rich gentlemen and ladies. This satirical hyperbole mocked heartless attitudes towards the poor, predominantly Irish Catholic (i.e., "Papists") as well as British policy toward the Irish in general. In English writing, the phrase "a modest proposal" is now conventionally an allusion to this style of straight-faced satire. Life has perhaps never felt more out of our control than it has over the past year. But refusing to accept our reality doesn't change its outcome. Rather it increases the suffering that comes from the futility of fighting against it. Enter Radical Acceptance: the practice of letting go of the illusion of control and being willing to accept things as they are right now. In this episode, Patrice Crisostomo, PhD and https://www.chconline.org/people/leeanne-merritt/ (Leeanne Merritt, LCSW), discuss the life-changing power of radical acceptance and share strategies for making the conscious choice to stop resisting and denying the way things are. It doesn't mean we have to like or agree with the situation, just acknowledge it in order to reduce the suffering caused by trying to change something that's out of our control. Only when we accept it all the way, just as it is, can we work on changing our behaviors and emotions in order to improve our situation and, ultimately, our lives.  Resources: https://dialecticalbehaviortherapy.com/ (Dialectical Behavior Therapy website) Sitting Still Like a Frog: Mindfulness Exercises for Kids (and Their Parents) by Eline Snel Visit https://podcasts.chconline.org/ (Voices of Compassion) online and see full episode show notes at podcast.chconline.org. In this episode, Susan Guthrie speaks with Daniel Herrold, one of the co-creators of Divored Over 40, a place to find friends and community after divorce. Often, when the smoke clears after divorce, it becomes apparent that there is another casualty of the split: the friends have fled.  There are a number of reasons why this can happen. In this episode, Susan Guthrie speaks with Ellen Bruno, award-winning documentarian and the filmmaker behind the deeply impactful film, SPLIT: A Film for Kids of Divorce (and Their Parents) The first time Susan saw the film SPLIT, even after 30 years as a divorce professional, she had to blink back tears.  The film shares the children's perspective on divorce... no adults, no experts… just kids speaking the powerful truth of what is on their minds and in their hearts. Their wisdom, candor, and humor gives courage to other children, and encourages parents to make better choices as they move through divorce.  Hear filmmaker Ellen Bruno's personal insights on the making of the film and the powerful impact that it has had on not only parents and children experiencing divorce, but for society in general and the divorce community in particular.  Ellen also shares her current project, SPLIT: The Sequel, in which she revisits the children in the original film as the enter their late teens and early adulthood.  Their look back on their experiences and their thoughts on what happened over the years and how the divorce continued to impact their lives is even more impactful than in the original film.  Their message is important and you do not want to miss it s make sure to listen to this episode today! Few Americans know much about the Reserve Officer Training Corps program, and even fewer have insight into the ROTC scholarship. However, the evident and not-so-obvious benefits of this scholarship deserve the attention of anyone involved in the college admissions process.   Amy and Mike invited consultant and author Lieutenant Colonel Robert O. Kirkland to talk all about the ROTC scholarship.   What are five things you will learn in this episode? What does ROTC entail? How difficult is it for a student to earn an ROTC scholarship?  What obligations and benefits accompany an ROTC scholarship? Do scholarship requirements vary by branch or intended major? Michael Ungar and Face2Face host David Peck talk about his new book, resilience, the seduction of hope, herd immunity, why selfishness often backfires and why the self help industry isn’t working. You can buy his book here: Change Your World: The Science of Resilience and The Path to Success Synopsis: How much can grit, motivation, and positive thinking actually matter when the world around us is starved of support and opportunity? A billion-dollar self-improvement industry always puts responsibility for change on our shoulders. But this approach, which owes more to the myths of rugged individualism and victim-blaming politics than to credible scientific research, produces few real and lasting improvements to our health and happiness.Dr. Michael Ungar’s mind-bending new book, Change Your World: The Science of Resilience and The Path to Success (Sutherland House Book, May 30, 2019), reveals the emptiness of the self-improvement movement and offers instead a stunning new perspective on success and personal change. What we really need when things get tough and the odds are stacked against us, he writes, are strong support systems and an environment rich in opportunity. Using the science of resilience and real-life stories from across classes and cultures, he shows how nurturing spouses and families, supportive employers, and effective institutions are the real differences between success and failure in our lives. The good news is that it is easier to change your world than it is to change yourself. Biography: Dr. Michael Ungar is among the best known writers and researchers on the topic of resilience in the world. His work has changed the way resilience is understood, shifting the focus from individual traits to the interactions between people and their families, schools, workplaces, and communities. As the Canada Research Chair in Child, Family and Community Resilience and Professor of Social Work at Dalhousie University, as well as a family therapist, he has helped to identify the most important factors that influence the resilience of children and adults during periods of transition and stress. He is the author of 15 books that have been translated into five languages, numerous manuals for parents, educators, and employers, as well as more than 170 scientific papers. Dr. Ungar’s immense influence comes from his ability to adapt ideas from his research and clinical practice into best-selling works like Too Safe For Their Own Good: How Risk and Responsibility Help Teens Thrive and I Still Love You: Nine Things Troubled Kids Need from Their Parents. His blog Nurturing Resilience appears on Psychology Today’s website.Dr. Ungar is also the founder and Director of the Resilience Research Centre where he coordinates over ten million dollars in research in more than a dozen countries. Dr. Ungar regularly provides consultation and training to organizations like the World Bank, UNESCO, and the Red Cross. He is the former Chair of the Nova Scotia Mental Health and Addictions Strategy, executive board member of the American Family Therapy Academy, and a family therapist who works with mental health services for individuals and families at risk. In 2012 Dr. Ungar was the recipient of the Canadian Association of Social Workers National Distinguished Service Award for his outstanding contribution to clinical work with families and communities. Handel's Messiah - the advent calendar

Recipe for ragout with poor Irish children: The mighty dean and writer, Jonathan Swift was close to putting a stop to the premiere of Messiah. Under no circumstances would he let his choir singers perform in a ‘fiddle players’ club in Fishamble Street’. One would have thought that Jonathan Swift in particular would appreciate a concert that was to raise money for the release of imprisoned debtors who were starving. Because Jonathan Swift himself had previously highlighted the shocking poverty in which the majority of Catholics in the country were living with his pamflet, ‘A Modest Proposal For Preventing the Children of Poor People in Ireland from Being a Burden to Their Parents or the Country, and for Making Them Beneficial to the Public.´Music: Dunedin Consort ‘Handel’s Original Dublin Version 1742’

Mark de Silva is the guest. His debut novel, Square Wave, is available now from Two Dollar Radio.  If I recall correctly, Mark's parents dropped him off at my house, which, if true, would make him the first guest in the history of the program to be dropped off by his parents, which is hopefully the start of a trend. (Maybe I should do a series of interviews called "Writers and Their Parents" wherein writers come over with their parents, and we all sit down and talk.) Mark went to Cambridge and got a Ph.D. in Philosophy. I feel like I should tell you that. He grew up in the Inland Empire here in Southern California, the child of psychotherapists. I think I'm remembering that correctly. This conversation took place two or three weeks ago. My life has been crazy since then. My brain is completely shot. I can't remember much. But I do remember laughing a lot during this interview, and feeling like it went really well. So there's that. I hope you guys enjoy it.  In today's monologue, I think I talk about caffeine. And I talk about my barista, a gentle man with a ponytail.   Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
