If you have kids who play sports, you know all too well the special kind of crazy that brings to the household. When my 3 kids were younger they tried just about everything: lacrosse, tennis, golf, baseball, ice hockey, basketball, irish dance, football, volleyball…. I think I got everything…. Anyway, suffice it to say it could get a little chaotic. And like a lot of sports parents, an app named TeamSnap was part of our every day lives. I suspect a lot of you listening have it on your phones, too, because it helps bring some order to that chaos. And that right there brings a smile to the face of this episodes guest, Peter Frintzilas, the CEO of TeamSnap. Frintzilas joined TeamSnap in 2020, when we were in the midst of a pandemic and youth sports effectively ground to a halt. For most people, that would have made joining the company a kind of a non-starter, right? Oh, our entire audience has more or less evaporated? Yeaaaaah, no. But not Frintzilas. He saw the opportunity to put TeamSnap at the center of a youth sports industry that by some measures might be worth $60 billion annually in the near future. In our conversation, Pete and I talk about the growth of youth sports, how he first encountered TeamSnap, how recent acquisitions are performing, how he sees the youth sports market evolving, and most importantly how he sees his company taking advantage of it. He also reveals how he got his start in movies (turns out being able to remember your lines is pretty key…) ABOUT THIS PODCAST The 1-on-1: Sports Business Conversations podcast is a production of ADC Partners, a sports marketing agency that specializes in creating, managing, and evaluating effective partnerships between brands and sports. Today's guest is an ardent supporter of investing in their team to help them master their craft and maximize results. He's spent his entire career in the technology and B2B SaaS arena leading through numerous GTM roles. Brian Caulfield is the Chief Operating Officer at TeamSnap. Brian joins Host Matt Benelli to discuss how to avoid the debilitating impacts of attrition, how to identify the three types of employees on your team, and why having a leadership group that believes in coaching is so important.Takeaways:Attrition is one of the biggest hurdles for any team in trying to reach its goal or attain an outcome. Without having the right people in the right seats, teams will struggle to be successful. When constructing and managing a team, employees can be broken into three subsets: A Players, B Players, and C Players. Each type of employee needs different types of coaching and support in order to maximize both their growth and the company's.A Players, also referred to in sales as “Eagles”, consistently produce great results but are hard to find. C Players are all talk and no action. They find excuses for every missed outcome. Leaders should weed C Players out of their teams. B Players get the best benefit from coaching and can become “the closest thing to an A Player through effective coaching.” B Players likely make up the majority of your team so it's worth investing in their development. The Sandler Sales methodology is a very effective coaching tool for developing B Players because it teaches them the science and technique components of selling and how to improve their sales approach by practicing those techniques.Coaching requires both top-down and bottom-up buy-in from an organization. To implement effective coaching methods, the leadership team needs to believe in coaching and want to make investments in developing their team. In order for that training to take hold and really stick with your employees, they must have a desire to be coached. When finding a new job as a sales leader, make sure to interview the company about their commitment to coaching as much as they interview you. Find out if they're willing to pay for the proper trainers, managers, and software tools that you know are needed.Sales managers should avoid focusing too much and getting too involved with certain deals. As tough as it might be to hear, sales reps need room to fail and lose a few deals so they can learn valuable lessons from those failures. Encourage your team to share things that they've learned from failures, that way every other rep doesn't have to learn that same lesson the hard way.Quote of the Show:“The biggest hurdle to hitting objectives, whether it's a releasing product or it's hitting a quota, is attrition. If you don't have butts in seats, it's really hard to win.” - Brian CaulfieldLinks:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/briancaulfieldintralinks/ TeamSnap Website: https://www.teamsnap.com/ Shoutouts:Richard Farlow: https://www.linkedin.com/in/richard-f-b68a7a41/ Leif O'Leary: https://www.linkedin.com/in/leifoleary/ Ways to Tune In:Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/0Yb1wPzUxyrfR0Dx35ym1A Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/coach2scale-how-modern-leaders-build-a-coaching-culture/id1699901434 Google Podcasts: https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly9mZWVkcy50cmFuc2lzdG9yLmZtL2NvYWNoMnNjYWxlLWhvdy1tb2Rlcm4tbGVhZGVycy1idWlsZC1hLWNvYWNoaW5nLWN1bHR1cmU Amazon Music: https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/fd188af6-7c17-4b2e-a0b2-196ecd6fdf77 Podchaser: https://www.podchaser.com/podcasts/coach2scale-how-modern-leaders-5419703 YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@Coach2Scale CoachEm™ is the first Coaching Execution Platform that integrates deep learning technology to proactively analyze patterns, highlight the "why" behind the data with root causes, and identify the actions that will ultimately improve business results going forward. Dave Dupont (CEO/Founder, Team Snap) left corporate America to embark on his passion to solve a simple problem. "How can sports organizations provide tools to coaches, parents, and athletes to streamline constant communications?" Team Snap has since been an innovator in how sports organizations use mobile technology to manage their business and communications. In this episode, we talk about how Dave built a Team Snap community of over 1,000,000 teams, and 24,000,000 users, in over 130 countries with a strong cultured fully remote global staff.
In this episode, I interview Desirée Jewell, Director of Marketing at TeamSnap. We discuss her background as a product marketer, what that taught her about technology and aligning marketing with your engineering and technology teams. TeamSnap has over 24 million people who use their web and mobile apps to help save them time when it comes to parents, clubs or leagues who run team sports. Desirée and I share a common view of marketing 's role within the larger organization as the "team" that is best positioned to partner with the other business units. I really enjoyed meeting Desirée and learning how her entrance into marketing shapes her strategy on everything from product marketing to customer service and the importance of connecting to a larger purpose— or as they say, 'Take the Work Out of Play.' Team Managing Cringe & ‘Ah-Ha' Moments If the coach you work with is a bad communicator - don't be afraid to step up and take over the communication role Delegate! Have specific roles assigned to a bunch of the parents - and assign them right at the beginning of the season (even if it's something that you don't need until the end of the season - i.e. coaches' gifts, team videos) Teaching Children & Keeping it Fun Talk to the kids physically at their level - take a knee so you're not talking down to them which can be very intimidating (this can be especially important when coaching girls) Minimize lines - have multiple stations to keep the kids constantly moving Free-play - 30 minutes of no adult involvement Mental Peak Performance As a parent - Have your child own the experience and stay out of the way, and don't attend tryouts As a coach - put each kid in the best position for them to succeed - which is different for each kid Coaches - you have to format your communication to your athletes - so that they don't freeze from the pressures you are putting on them Coaching Resources TeamSnap - Software program and app that allows you to enter team rosters, schedules, and tons of team info. You can send scheduling updates easily and it's a lifesaver for team managers. Discipline Corporate punishment for individual mistakes - You really need to think through your team chemistry and be careful if you are going to ever use this. Community service can be another positive way to discipline kids. Teambuilding/Rewards HUGE IDEA #1 - Juggling competition - Each week you try to beat your previous record of how many times you can juggle the soccer ball. Good reward because it encourages you to practice on your own outside of practice. And you can set individual and team goals for each week and for the season. When setting up teamwork goals - make sure you include the parents, not just the kids Inspiring Story Be on the lookout for a kid having off the field home problems - being late for practice, etc. - then seek to understand and see how you can help this kid out Winning Winning is a happy result - but there are so many more lessons to be learned from losing The One that Got Away Emily's son's final high school start as a baseball pitcher - they were up 5-1, and then one play rattled him and the team HUGE IDEA #2 - Coaches - practice situations going wrong and momentum swinging against them - you have to practice it and be prepared for it Teach your kids to be idiot-proof Coaching/Leadership Motivation Quote - 'Success comes from knowing that you did your best to become the best that you are capable of becoming' - Coach John Wooden Parting Advice Forget about the win/loss record - and instead focus on making the experience fun The TeamSnap Youth Sports Podcast www.teamsnap.com/community/podcast Great guests for coaches, parents,
