Published: June 13, 2022 In late February, Vinea Research administered an online survey to a sample of more than 1,500 self-identified Catholics who went to Mass at least once per year. The results of the survey included both positive and negative outcomes for Catholics, with one of the significant negative outcomes being that in-person Mass attendance has decreased and is not expected to be back to pre-pandemic levels by the summer of 2022. Join Changing Our World‘s Jim Friend and his special guest, Hans Plate, the Founder and President of Vinea Research, as they discuss this important research and the implications for our Church. In this episode we talk about the mental health impacts of CoVid on young adults and adult students in higher education programs. We discuss how virtual learning was impacted, as well as relationships with peers, and basic living (including sleep-wake cycles, motivation, and the quality of life) were all impacted by CoVid and virtual learning. Looking at how depression and anxiety have been on the rise for many students during this time period as a direct result of CoVid and how it impacted the college experience. Add to that financial, housing, and connecting with other students for studying ....many students struggled to keep their heads above water. We then talk with university professor and associate vice president at Highlands University in New Mexico, Dr. Denise Montoya, about how she engaged students in learning in such a way that they did not "fizzle out", but rather deeply connect with their education. She shares her powerful tools, including a system she created called "AACCES" that helps educators create a culture of learning whether "in person" or virtual. Her positive approach and edification for all educators to hold high expectations for engagement by their students is contagious!SEL, Social Emotional Learning, is about mental health and social skills we all use in our daily interactions. Students across the world found CoVid and virtual learning debilitating when it comes to creating meaningful relationships, understanding social norms, and finding motivation to learn. In this episode, we look at the unique challenges that adult students, and the learning institutions providing them their education, experienced during this crazy time!If you, or someone you know, could use mental health support, contact the National Alliance on Mental Health for their support line, support groups, and other great resources. Despite progress made in recent decades, women continue to be at greater risk of not achieving a financially secure retirement than men, in large part due to the gender pay gap and time out of the workforce for parenting and caregiving. Covid has made that situation worse. Tired of juggling work responsibilities and family caregiving duties during the pandemic, many women simply gave up and joined the Great Resignation. With Mary Beth to discuss how Covid has affected the outlook for women's retirement security is Catherine Collinson, CEO and president of the Transamerica Institute and its Transamerica Center for Retirement Studies.
We're headed into the third year of pandemic life, and one thing is clear: We're all exhausted from Covid. Virus caseloads are waning across the country, masks are coming off, people are traveling more, and office workers have new return dates. Does that mean the pandemic is over? Maybe. And maybe not.On Feb. 25, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention relaxed its guidelines on mask wearing and social distancing, saying that 70 percent of Americans no longer need to heed those recommendations. But for a lot of people, like parents of kids under 5 and those who are immunocompromised, this presents more challenges. It's clear the burden of managing Covid risk increasingly rests on the individual, so what are we supposed to do now? It's a lot to contemplate. So on today's show, Jane puts that question to two experts to help the rest of us.Dr. Monica Gandhi is an infectious-disease physician whose previous work on H.I.V. informs her assessment of public health messaging during this pandemic. Dr. Aaron E. Carroll is the chief health officer at Indiana University and has spent the pandemic thinking about how to keep his community safe. The good news? Both of them think we've got the tools to move forward safely.Mentioned in this episode:“Overcaution Carries Its Own Danger to Children” by Monica Gandhi in The Atlantic.“Why Hospitalizations Are Now a Better Indicator of Covid's Impact” by Monica Gandhi and Leslie Bienen in The New York Times.“Covid-19 Vaccine Effectiveness Against the Omicron (B.1.1.529) Variant” in The New England Journal of Medicine.“To Fight Covid, We Need to Think Less Like Doctors” by Aaron E. Matt Hackler is Vice President of Strategic Capacity Building with Feeding America. Like many of us, Matt says he "fell into" fundraising before joining Feeding America. In his current role, Matt leads a team of experts across multiple disciplines to help local member food banks increase their capacity to serve children, families, seniors and individuals experiencing hunger across the U.S.Matt and I connected recently to talk about COVID-19's impact on fundraising in general, on Feeding America nationally, and on individual member food banks. We covered a lot of ground, including:How food banks learned from the 2008 - 2010 financial crisis and changed their approach to crisis fundraising as a result. The spike in giving due to COVID-19, and whether donors who came on file as a result of COVID are "emergency response" donors, or "recession" donors (and what that means for your future fundraising efforts). When is the right time to stop talking to donors about COVID-19?The role of brand in fundraising, both nationally and in local communities across the U.S.How food banks have historically relied on volume-based tactical fundraising efforts instead of relationship-based philanthropy -- and why that needs to evolve for the future. Feeding America is seeing that donors who gave in response to COVID-19 are giving more frequently, retaining at higher rates, giving higher average gifts, and converting to monthly ongoing support at higher levels than the average donor -- and what this means for the future of hunger relief funding.Whether you're working in hunger relief or a completely different kind of nonprofit, you'll want to catch this episode with Matt. His insights are relevant no matter what your organization's focus! This episode of The Rainmaker Fundraising Podcast is brought to you by my friends at Virtuous.
