The prospect of a wider conflict with Russia under a scenario where Donald Trump is back in the White House has spooked Europe. Thierry Breton, a European commissioner, is among those sounding the alarm. This month Breton made headlines by recalling how Trump said NATO was dead and the United States would never come to Europe's rescue. The journalist talking to Breton when he made those remarks is Teri Schultz. Teri has focused on European security for three decades, and her reports for National Public Radio and Deutsche Welle are often the first and last word on NATO and defence. In this episode, Teri discusses her exchange with Breton as well as key moments when Trump shook NATO to its core. Teri also reviews the announcement that NATO will hold its largest military exercise for decades. And she assesses her own readiness to follow NATO Military Committee chief Rob Bauer's advice to stock up on a flashlight, a radio, batteries, and water. Such items, says Bauer, are needed to survive the first 36 hours of a conflict of the kind that Swedish officials have been warning citizens about. "It's not a given that we are in peace," Bauer told a news conference. In addition: why Dutch caretaker Prime Minister Mark Rutte is likely to beat Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas in the race to succeed Jens Stoltenberg as the next NATO secretary general. Support the show

Kossi, a Greyhound Mix, Says 100 % Yes!In this episode of the Pawdcast, Karen and Jean chat with Teri Schultz, a freelance reporter for National Public Radio and Deutsche Welle.Based in Brussels, Belgium it was a story in Finland caught animal-lover Teri’s attention. A project being overseen by the University of Helsinki using scent detection dogs to sniff out Covid 19 at Helsinki’s airport. At the height of the pandemic, Teri traveled to Helsinki twice – once at her own expense, to cover the story. What Teri shares is nothing short of fascinating. Kossi, a greyhound mix who was adopted off the streets of Spain, has developed into a master sniffer -- with a specialty for identifying diseases. Under the guidance of his owner/trainer, Kossi can detect Covid 19 in minutes with incredible accuracy. Finland is one of several countries, studying (or piloting) the use of dogs to sniff out the virus and help snuff out the pandemic. The United Kingdom, Australia, Germany, the United Arab Emirates and the United State are conducting similar programs. Here in the U.S., work is being done at the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Veterinary Medicine.Teri, Jean and Karen discuss what’s needed to take this program to scale and the unlimited applications for this noninvasive (nonthreatening) type of detection.Learn more about Kossi’s work here -- https://en.wisenose.fi/smell_detection/https://www.dogrisk.com/research-group

She says the Kremlin has long been breaching the Intermediate-range Nuclear Forces agreement, the INF -- she was dispatched by President Barack Obama to tell the Russians that. Gottemoeller supports the Trump Administration's threat of "consequences" if a return to compliance is not found. Gottemoeller was also the chief negotiator on the "New START" arms control treaty that has just come into full implementation and which, she believes, can prevent a new arms race. Channeling Brussels, hosted by journalist Teri Schultz, gets newsmakers, movers and shakers to lose the lingo, burst out of the Brussels bubble and have real conversations about the critical foreign and security policies shaping our world. it's the rest of the story, beyond the few seconds of soundbites that make it into the news. This week's guest is the US envoy for Ukraine negotiations, Kurt Volker, who's heading into his fourth meeting with Kremlin counterpart Vladislav Surkov on Friday, trying to find a way forward for the nearly four-year conflict in eastern Ukraine. Volker came to Brussels on his way to the Surkov rendez-vous in Dubai, to brief NATO and EU officials before visiting Kiev and the frontline in Donbas. Episode 11: Gen. Ben Hodges on Zapad 2017 and a "military Schengen zone"

In this week's show is an interview with General Ben Hodges, the commander of U-S forces in Europe. I caught up with him after NATO exercises in the Baltics and Poland, called "Saber Strike", and just before he was headed off to oversee "Saber Guardian" in the Black Sea region. General Hodges and Teri Schultz discuss the upcoming Zapad military drills by Russia and Belarus, which don't give him much cause for concern because, he says, "we're always ready." He'd like to see more transparency from the Kremlin as to the actual number of troops being used. Moscow says it's just 13,000, right on the limit for being forced to invite close-up inspections of their drills. Hodges says "prove it". And he has concerns that don't rest on the Russians -- but on allies themselves. European governments keep laws in place that block the movement of allied military equipment across borders -- even when needed for protection. In this episode, Hodges explains why he's advocating a "military Schengen zone". This week's Channeling Brussels is brought to you by the Atlantic Council.
