In this episode of the Sustainability Solved Podcast, we are looking into the environmental impact of something we may not usually give a second thought to – elevators. Half of the world's population lives in cities and that number is expected to increase to 70% in 2050. As pressure on city space continues to rise, we are increasingly building upwards for our office spaces and homes, meaning we need efficient vertical transportation that doesn't cost the earth. We are joined by Dr Paula Casares, Global Head of ESG at TK Elevator, and Mark Bashford, director of The Lift Consultancy, who explain the improvements made in the development of elevators to reduce their energy usage and environmental impact. Highlights Mark estimates that approximately 70% of the lifts in the UK market are using older technology and are therefore not energy efficient. Elevators transport over 1 million people every day and can account for up to 10% of the energy consumption of a building. Paula's company launched a project to become the first ever organisation to retrofit an existing elevator to achieve net-zero energy. Mark tells us about destination dispatch, a system where everyone going to the same floor gets in the same lift to decrease the number of stops the elevator must make, therefore reducing energy usage. The elevator industry has responded to the growing need for sustainable solutions by developing elevator models that consume less energy. Additionally, new elevators are using less materials to make its construction lighter. Paula explains how sustainability and digitalisation are no longer separate entities, and how TK Elevator views digitalisation as one level further in its reduction of its carbon footprint. NASA is putting together an independent team of researchers to study sightings of unidentified aerial phenomena, or UAPs, the updated term now used to refer to UFOs, the American space agency said in a blog post yesterday. NASA says it plans to study these sightings from a scientific perspective but also stressed that “there is no evidence UAPs are extraterrestrial in origin,” The Verge reports. The study team is to be led by astrophysicist David Spergel under NASA's Science Mission Directorate. It will attempt to identify what data is out there on UAPs and figure out how to best capture data on UAPs in the future. NASA noted that the limitations in sightings make it hard to come to logical conclusions about where UAPs come from. The study will be open and unclassified, according to Thomas Zurbuchen, the associate administrator for science at NASA, according to The Verge. SolarSquare, a Mumbai-based startup, has raised $4 million led by Google Capital, with participation from US investor Chris Sacca's Lowercarbon Capital, Singapore based Symphony Asia and Nithin Kamath's Rainmatter Foundation. The round also saw participation from Better Capital, Climate Angels and several angel investors. This investment mark's the $1 billion Lowercarbon Capital's first Indian investment, according to SolarSquare's press release. SolarSquare was founded in 2015 by Neeraj Jain and Nikhil Nahar, and Shreya Mishra joined them as co-founder. The company, originally started as a B2B solar venture, is rapidly expanding its B2C operations, and the fresh funds will help SolarSquare to go faster in that direction. WENDY GROUNDS: Welcome to Manage This, the podcast by project managers for project managers. And we're so glad you joined us today. We have a really cool story to tell you. I am Wendy Grounds, and in the studio with me is Bill Yates. So today we're going to be talking about the tallest elevator test tower in the Western hemisphere. This is TK Elevator's new North American headquarters at The Battery in Atlanta. It's a 420-foot-tall Innovation and Qualification Center. This three-building headquarters complex which includes the tower will eventually be occupied by more than 900 employees. And I've driven by this tower, and it is phenomenal. It's really big. BILL YATES: Yeah, it's so exciting. You could see it going up. And for those who are not familiar with TK Elevator, this company is one of the four largest elevator companies in the world. They have 50,000 employees globally. They do 8 billion in annual sales. That's euro. So it's a large company. We're delighted to discuss that with Ben today. Meet Ben WENDY GROUNDS: Ben Norton is the Vice President and Division Manager for Brasfield & Gorrie, which is the general contractor for this construction project. Ben, welcome to Manage This. We're excited to have you in the studio today. BEN NORTON: Thank you for having me. WENDY GROUNDS: First of all I wanted to find out, how long have you been with Brasfield & Gorrie? And just tell us some of the projects that you've worked on. BEN NORTON: Sure. So this January will make 20 years with Brasfield & Gorrie. It's gone by very fast. Some of the projects that I've worked on: the Georgia Aquarium, most recently completed the Predator exhibit, and the Sea Lion exhibit that was completed about five years ago. The Emory Health Science Research Building. Also Marriott and a SpringHill Suites down at the GICC, convention center down by the airport. St. George Village in Roswell is a large retirement facility. A lot of work at Agnes Scott through the years, and University of Georgia. And also recently wrapped up Passion City Church. So a lot of different market sectors there to talk about. WENDY GROUNDS: Yeah, yeah. BILL YATES: Now, you mentioned University of Georgia. But you actually went to Clemson University; is that correct? BEN NORTON: That's correct. BILL YATES: Do you care for their football team, or you don't really follow them? They're not very good; right? BEN NORTON: Clemson's or Georgia's? BILL YATES: Well played. Yup. All right. We could dedicate a whole podcast just to college football and rivalries. WENDY GROUNDS: Yeah, yeah, but I'm going to move you along. BILL YATES: Okay.
