In 1999, Fanmail released an extended play, Here Comes Fanmail EP, and their debut studio album, The Latest Craze, with the former containing a cover of The Police's 1983 single "Every Breath You Take." In the same year, the band's only music video, "Rock and Roll Star", was released;[18] it was directed by Derek Dale. Fanmail's second studio album, Fanmail 2000, was released in 2000 and included a cover of the Backstreet Boys' 1999 single "I Want It That Way"; it was the band's last release before the group disbanded in 2002. The band's song "Superfan" was featured on the soundtrack to the 2001 movie Extreme Days[19] as well as in the film. "Rock and Roll Star" and the band's cover of "I Want It That Way" appeared on the Tooth & Nail Tenth Anniversary compilation in 2003.[20] Silletta formed another Christian punk rock band, The Franchise, which released one studio album, Original Inevitable, on his Vanishing Point Records label on August 12, 2003.[21][22] Silletta later released a solo album, The Life and Times of..., on June 17, 2011.[23]https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlankeyeSome Geocities Website:The Review:Raiting: B+Fanmail has just released their first album. Its an EP with four songs. It is called "Here Comes Fanmail." Let me start by telling you that the lead singer used to be in Plankeye and the guitarist from Slick Shoes. Fanmail combines both types of music. The music sounds like Plankeye but with a more punk edge. If you liked Plankeye you will definitely like Fanmail. Fanmail is much better of a band than Plankeye. It is only around $5 and I suggest giving it a try. I would have liked a couple more songs but it is still good. The Band:Scott Silletta - Vocals, GuitarDale Yob - GuitarJason Fleetwood - Bass, BGVJason Feltman - Drumshttps://www.oocities.org/sunsetstrip/stage/1512/fanmail/Ridiculous interview with Scott, late 2000https://www.skruttmagazine.se/fanmaileng.htmAllMusic bio:Featuring members of 90-lb Wuss, the Cootees, Plankeye, Slick Shoes, Value Pac and Rainy Days, Fanmail could be considered as a Christian punk super group. Joined by Yob (guitar's/bgv's) , Fleetwood (bass) and Jason (drums), Fanmail evidently enjoy playing there peculiar brand of high energy, hard edged pop punk rock for those willing enough to latch onto 'The Latest Craze'. Scott has matured both his performance and song-writing since the early days of Plankeye, as Fanmail's debut album clearly demonstrates. Scott and co poke fun at at life with tongues firmly planted in cheeks; simultaneously directing the listener to Christ. Topics range from the deceit of fame ('Rock And Roll Star"), the celebration of family ('Jordi') and the need for humility ('Wonderful Punches'). 'The Latest Craze' is packed full of well produced and executed songs at the hands of Scott Silletta and Gene Eugene; where a truly original, yet familiar style is not only realised but also maintained throughout. Be a true fanatic, get into ' The Latest Craze'!https://www.crossrhythms.co.uk/products/Fanmail/The_Latest_Craze/911/Release Date: 17 June 1999https://rateyourmusic.com/release/album/fanmail/the-latest-craze/Pastor Dave's Playlist May 7, 20185. “Turn off that Radio” by FanmailScott Silleta, the band's frontman, was one of my rock n'roll heroes when I was in high school. I was pretty much obsessed with him for a while. So, when he left the Christian rock band Plankeye and started a pop-punk band I followed right along. Fanmail was, admittedly, not great but Silletta's inclusion had me hooked. This song from their first album The Latest Craze (1999) is fairly pointless in lyrical content, with the chorus simply repeating “turn off that radio” over and over again. For whatever reason, however, is stuck with me this week and was a good, fun, blast.https://pastordaveonline.org/2018/05/07/this-weeks-good-music-14/LA Times Interview, March 9, 2001“I've long been against the whole labeling mechanism that Christians have given themselves and the box it has put them in,” said Cummings during an interview at the Hub Cafe in Fullerton. “Declaring you have to act in a certain way or sing only songs that praise the Lord serves to stifle art and creativity.”“It's weird. It's like we're stuck in the middle somewhere,” Guyton added. “The secular market won't touch us because we're Christians, and the Christian market won't either because we're not Christian enough.”What irks front man Silletta--a former member of Plankeye, one of Orange County's most successful Christian rock bands--is the false idolization he says he has encountered. He addresses the issue in “Hero,” a song on “Fanmail 2000,” the follow-up to 1999's debut, “Latest Craze,” both released on Seattle-based Tooth & Nail Records.“After shows in my old band, people would touch me and cry . . . really silly stuff like that,” said Silletta, who formed Fanmail in 1998 because of creative tensions within Plankeye.“They build you into this superhero in their mind, expecting all kinds of things from you. But when you don't live up to those expectations, they tear you down. When MxPx left Tooth & Nail [in 1998] for a major label [A&M; Records], they were slammed for [allegedly] not being Christians anymore. I know those guys firsthand. . . . I don't know anyone with more integrity than the three guys in that band.”…With the release of “Fanmail 2000,” the band fulfilled its contractual obligation to Tooth & Nail and, according to Silletta, has declined to sign a new, five-album deal. Fanmail, whose members range from ages 29 to 42, is looking to expand its local fan base with a series of shows here. They're also hoping to attract major label interest.“One of the good things about Tooth & Nail is that their [products are] distributed by EMI,” Silletta said. “It's been fantastic to have our CDs available at all the retail outlets. The problem, though, is that I have, in two different bands, been under contract with them since ‘93, and I just feel like it's time to work with someone else that can take our music to the next level.”https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-2001-mar-09-me-35371-story.html

Today we are headed to England to learn about a relatively new band, Lion of Judah. This group is working to bring Christian music into the mainstream music scene in the UK. Lion of Judah has recently signed with Gospel Song Records, an imprint of Tooth & Nail Records here in the states, and their brand new album Closer was released in October 2021. Today I'm chatting with the lead singer and primary songwriter for the group, Josh Bannister. I'm eager to hear about how God is using Lion of Judah's music to open new doors where the truth of God's love might not traditionally be heard. This week we're joined by Scott Rodgers - a guy who, over the course of his career, has done a little bit of everything in the entertainment industry. Although his family wasn't necessarily "religious," Scott got involved in church as a teen. He later joined The Dingees, a ska/punk band signed to Tooth & Nail Records. He went on to become an actor, starring in a variety of shows including "Key & Peel" and "Reno 911!," as well as several independent films. He's directed movies like "The Dramatics" and "Date.," and now works with budding creators looking to write and produce their own projects. Scott recently jumped back into music with "Dead Drummer Friends," a garage/funk/soul project that he worked on throughout the pandemic. Director Matt Hinton's documentary, Parallel Love: The Story of a Band Called Luxury, has a couple of very interesting wrinkles. Not only is the Georgia post-punk band an act you've likely not heard of, the reunited act now features three members who are Eastern Orthodox priests, and director Hinton is part of the band, as well. That's before you get into the fact that Luxury is an often-forgotten part of the early history of Christian label Tooth & Nail Records, or the terrible accident which almost ended the lives of the band members. It's a fascinating story, filled with music you're sure to wish you'd heard when you were in your teens, as it's so richly-layered and evocative, so it was with some excitement that I hopped on Zoom with director Hinton (who now also plays guitar for Luxury) to talk about all of this and more.
Cullen and Mason chat with Matt Hinton, the filmmaker of Parallel Love and guitarist for Luxury, a rock band that used to be signed to Tooth & Nail Records and then many of the band members became Orthodox priests. Back in the late 90s, Tooth & Nail Records branched out. They signed their first Canadian band. That band happened to call the small town of Steinbach, Manitoba, home. They were The Undecided. In this episode, we talk to Aaron Sprinkle, an accomplished producer, engineer, and songwriter. Sprinkle has been in the music business for over two decades. He’s produced numerous records for the likes of Anberlin, Pedro The Lion, and Acceptance. For years, he was a prominent producer and engineer at Tooth & Nail Records – a successful label nestled in the heart of downtown Seattle – and the albums he’s produced have cumulatively sold millions. Sprinkle has an absolute need to create, and his insight and expertise into chasing that need is second to none.

Chapter 16 KJ-52 is a Christian rapper who struggled to get his career off the ground in the 90’s after being rejected by his dream label and dropped early on by a major label and then found his home among the rest of us punk, DIY and hardcore folks. KJ embodies many of the same values that we often discuss here but his music fit much better in the BEC and CCM worlds so he is a terrific individual to help us understand the similarities and differences in that world and the one we spend most of our time in. BEC recordings is the CCM (Contemporary Christian Music) leaning imprint of Tooth & Nail Records and plays a very important role in expanding the company, generating revenue, and enabling Tooth & Nail/Solid State to have a larger and more competent staff. Admittedly CCM music has a reputation for being cheesy or unoriginal, but like most things, if you look closer you will find that there is much more nuance than you’d expect. She assisted and worked with Jim Worthen and also became Brandon's Personal Assistant, she lived in a communal house with other Tooth & Nail employees, and she was around through the biggest staff and culture change in the company, driven in part by the merger with EMI, the shift in genres, and the success of BEC Records. Before today’s interview we are going to jump back to one of my favorite christian rock bands Reliant K with College Kids. Does it have anything worthwhile to say about the college experience? Where does it land on our scale from Dylan to July? Nicky’s pick is a noisy progressive record called The Fleeting Light of Impermanence by The Appleseed Cast out of Atlanta, Georgia. It’s ambiant noise of the best kind with the vocals as another fantastic instrument. https://graveface.bandcamp.com/album/the-fleeting-light-of-impermanence I’ve got Sailing England by The Pounds. This is another folk album (big shock) with mouth harp and banjo to show that the americana trend has most definitely crossed the pond. Each track has its own flavor. In some cases it’s almost a gimmick; like Miss Me building layers of sound, or Walking Around with its ambient noise. Thankfully the solid production keeps it from getting too annoying. There is a continuum between charming and depressing I basically hang out there. If you’re like me, this is the perfect mood music. https://thepounds.bandcamp.com/album/sailing-england Today’s guest is Jaron Weidner; entrepreneur and lead singer of the band Hundred Year Dash Check out The Symmetry Ep http://bit.ly/2W6Fbcb Here are some of the artists we talked about: Mxpx https://spoti.fi/2VR1e1q Five Iron Frenzy https://spoti.fi/2LGPQW3 The Chariot https://spoti.fi/2X8gF71 Tooth & Nail Records http://bit.ly/2QrIyEu The Postal Service https://spoti.fi/2M7sWax Mutemath https://spoti.fi/2YVqHsF Passion Pit https://spoti.fi/2X84cjF Title Fight https://spoti.fi/2K2Z50i Basement https://spoti.fi/30L5XWe Frightened Rabbit https://spoti.fi/2YJF7Me Jaron Recommends Brother Sister - Mewithoutyou http://bit.ly/2I19cQE Disintegration - The Cure http://bit.ly/2K4Do00 Julianne Baker http://bit.ly/2VSc3QK Find all the episodes at http://www.ancapmusic.com Check out the show’s spotify soundtrack here:https://spoti.fi/2MFxkKG To Support Us Join The Freedom Choir here: http://www.supportsll.com Click here to sign up for email list:http://bit.ly/2MDWoSg Want the best course in music & liberty online? http://freedomsong365.com

Chapter 13 We now continue to move into the 2000’s era of Tooth & Nail Records. Brandon has sold half of the company to EMI and has purchased and absorbed Takehold Records, which brought its founder Chad Johnson on staff. Heavy music was continuing to explode, but also, in keeping with the Tooth and Nail style, Brandon and the staff continued to try to break and include a very wide variety of artists, including a very happy and poppy rock outfit from San Luis Obispo, CA, called Watashi Wa. Fronted by yet another young man who grew up as a Tooth & Nail kid, Seth Roberts joins Labeled to help paint the picture of that time and the unique challenges they faced. The story is of one dream fulfilled, and of another only partially fulfilled. Chapter 8 By the time the 90's were coming to a close, Tooth & Nail Records had accomplished some amazing things. They had sold millions of records and helped to create a movement and and establish a thriving music scene. In 1998 it seemed like Like the label was really on top and had it all figured out, but changes were brewing in the larger climate and music scene. The punk sound was at its pinnacle, but new sounds were emerging as well and the music industry and major labels were beginning to catch up with what the indies were doing and looking to get in on the action. This episode give us a chance to see from the view of a rival and competitor. Brad Most of Goatee Records explains what that time period felt like and Brandon reflects on his decisions making and thinking in that period. https://labeledpodcast.com/ Support Labeled on Patreon Join Labeled on Facebook MORE FROM TOOTH & NAIL: * Labeled: Music From The Podcast: smarturl.it/labeledplaylist * DISCOVER IT: New Tracks from T&N Records: smarturl.it/TNNDiscover * This Is Solid State: New Tracks from Solid State Records: https://spoti.fi/2CUCsaH * Tooth & Nail Store (LABELED Patreon members get 20% off everything): tnn.lnk.to/store
Tyson Motsenbocker is a songwriter and guitarist living in San Diego, California. After the release of two EP’s Until it Lands and Rivers and Roads Tyson defined himself as a mature lyricist and accomplished songwriter, sharing the stage with the likes of David Bazan, Vance Joy and James Bay. In 2013, after the death of his mother and hero, Tyson walked the six hundred mile stretch of coastline to San Francisco in memory of her. In the contrast of loud cars on a dirty highway with the serene beauty of the Pacific Ocean, Tyson contracted a new view of life beyond loss, a renegotiated relationship with God and peace inside the turmoil. This walk would become the basis for his debut full length record available now on Tooth & Nail Records. Tyson has two recent EPs and a number of singles which were released in 2017 and 2018. In this episode, Branden and Tyson talk about growing up in Pullman, Washington together, what it means to experience grief, and the process of writing his debut record. — This episode originally aired in May of 2016. "The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck" has been extremely beneficial to Joey's mental health. We're seeing the pressure to believe something even if you don't actually believe it move its way into mainstream culture's true seekers. Can't we all just stop giving a fuck, and be honest with others and ourselves about what we actually think about ourselves and the world? We're the ones who live in our reality anyway, so might as well enjoy what we've created for ourselves. Chapter 1: By the late 80s, a massive void had formed between secular and Christian culture, and the secular side seemed to have all the best music. But, something new was beginning to emerge from Southern California and the Pacific Northwest: a movement of Christian kids and leaders who not only embraced punk and DIY ethics, but saw it as consistent with their faith. They began to form a scene and a community of inspiring and credible music – but with no internet, there was little-to-no support or infrastructure. Clearly, there was not only proven demand from would-be consumers, but a clear vision from the artists involved. So they built what they needed, gained support from fans, and sparked a culture-shifting creative explosion leading to to the founding of Tooth & Nail Records and much more. My guest this week is Chris Estey. Chris and I share a connection to a very specific music scene that Seattle was a center of in the latter half of the 90’s. I was so, so excited to have this conversation with him. It did not disappoint. Many bands will be referenced here plus lots of talk about politics, religion, and the musical traditions of Seattle. Chris has had connections to Light in the Attic, Tooth & Nail Records, Bandoppler Magazine, and many more music-associated works. He is currently with XO Publicity and working on a book that I am very excited about.

Absolutely thrilled to bring my buddy Chad Johnson on the podcast today! We're talking about his new book 1,000 Risks, which chronicles his crazy journey of accepting the challenge to take one thousand risks to impact people for Jesus. About the Book: Could God change the world through seemingly average, ordinary people like you and me? One Thousand Risks is proof that Jesus can set you up to discover adventure in abundance. With an all-out-fight against comfort, fear, and living half-heartedly present, One Thousand Risks will help you know how to experience a super-powered life of spiritual significance. Your problem is fear--mostly the fear of man, fear of failure, and fear of rejection. In response to a dare, I began deliberately and consistently fighting fear--one tiny risk at a time, right where I was--which translated into this awkward, awesome life with Jesus. Have you ever sensed that you were created for something grand? Something way bigger than you could pull off on your own? You were designed to carry more power than any instrument on the planet. What if you left the unremarkable old for life in the messy, extravagant new? Take a risk; your Father is king of the universe. To discover spiritual significance in the messy, extravagant new, visit chadisliving.com or onethousandrisks.com. About the Author: An icon of independent music amongst those in the know--Chad Johnson was the director of A&R at what was one of the biggest independent record labels in the world. From DIY darlings to punk rock royalty, Chad seemed to fit right in at Tooth & Nail Records. After all, he'd paid his dues with his own little (failed) label, and every hardworking band knew his story. Chad's true calling came at the peak of music industry success--an unexpected, undeserved twelve-year career generously affixing his name to an album or two. With his wife's nervous blessing, he abruptly left the conventional music world, one part impassioned and three parts foolish. Cashing out his 401(k), gold plaques and the record collection, Chad began living an adventure that has led him, reluctantly, to every continent on the planet with Come&Live!. “Ideas of fascism, sexuality, gore, violence, and vomit all erupts into this one package of Raft of Dead Monkeys. This is dream logic, seemingly never second guessing any impulse that they had at this point in their musical careers…” - Nick Toti Raft of Dead Monkeys was a rock band from Seattle, WA, known for their controversy within the Christian punk scene. The band featured LOR show guests Jeff Bettger lead vocal, and Matt Johnson drums. Described as a hypothetical band mocking rock culture, their early stage shows consisted of vulgar lyrics, male strippers, and bloody nurses. In an interview, Jeff Bettger (JSuffering) explained the band's concept with the following: It was art, and we were making some statements about our culture by mirroring it, copying it and throwing it back in people’s faces to say, “Hey, this is what people adhere to and this is it.” We thought it was funny and humorous, and a lot of people didn’t get the joke, and didn’t get that we were characters we created when we performed sort of to break the Rock ‘n’ Roll idea/lifestyle, although we don’t really have that idea or lifestyle, at least I don’t. The majority of the band members were openly Christian and previously played in bands on Tooth & Nail Records, a label that featured primarily Christian rock bands. The band itself was not affiliated with Tooth & Nail, but the fan base of affiliated bands (Roadside Monument, Ninety Pound Wuss) was largely Christian and was left bewildered when Raft released their first album which contained explicit lyrics. In 2001 Raft was invited to play Tomfest, a Christian underground music festival, and received mixed reactions when singer Jeff Suffering fingered the crowd during their song Two Year Lease, which features the lyrics, "you're not the only whore in town, you're just the best fuck around." Tomfest founder Mikee Bridges later issued an apology to those who were offended by the performance. They broke up on October 22, 2001. This hour long sit down with Nick Toti (Interesting Productions), creator of THE COMPLETE HISTORY OF SEATTLE: a documentary about Raft of eDad Monkeys. Is a fun rollercoaster ride of interesting stories about Raft as well as the journey of creating this wonderfully dark documentary. Nick, often inspired by avant-garde movements found this artistic feel in Raft and became a fan of their art and music. His film company Interesting Productions is a non-profit production/distribution company that was founded by Nick Toti and Matt Latham. They make movies and give them away for free. I have, to be honest. Only in the last two years have I branched out from the pale, entertainment driven, society I called home for so long, to engage documentaries and truly enjoy them. This is a documentary about a band that seemed religiously suppressed and was ready to explode into an artistic cluster fuck mocking the times. In my opinion, Raft succeeded. "Sometimes the answer to prayer is us." - Billy Power This episode is a battle of the sexy voices. Never before have we recorded an episode in the morning, but since Billy is in New York, we had to record early. 6:30 am my time, 9:30 am his time. We chat about organizational religion and corporate culture. His upbringing, his military experience, some great life lessons, and his music career. Billy was a part of running Tooth & Nail Records for about ten years. He and I agree the existing institutional church model in America isn't working. But what's the alternative? He attends Hillsong NYC at the request of his wife and has some decent things to say about it. When he took a trip to Kenya, it changed his life. Getting out of our comfort zones and embracing life outside of ourselves will often do that. Jeff Bettger & Matt Johnson have known each other for over 20 years. They've played in multiple bands together in and outside of Tooth & Nail Records. Ninety Pound Wuss, Raft Of Dead Monkeys, Suffering And The Hideous Thieves together and then Matt has played been in Blenderhead, Roadside Monument, and a shit ton of other bands. They also both happened to be drawn into the Mars Hill Church culture and served as Pastors. These Tooth & Nail boys and I sit down with whiskey, beer, beards and glasses to chat about the state of our faith and our hopes for the future. Jeff and Matt also have some great times reminiscing about the record label days while I ask them the questions we all really wanted to know back then. Where the bands doing drugs? Having sex with groupies? And did MXPX pee on stage? These whiskey induced theological ramblings are an important and joyful conversation about things we may never be able to prove but hope life could be like. Matt does a rad job summing up the rambling and gives us things to think on, and then we hug it out.
