Growing up in a Harlem tenement perched above a record store, the Anel Sisters spent their Saturday “cleaning days” listening to albums and 45's bought from their chore allowance. Barbara and Lili developed an early love of music from their mother, who exposed them to eclectic playlists' ranging from Afro-Cuban jazz, Sarah Vaughn, Tchaikovsky, to Dizzy Gillespie. A trip to see “The Sound of Music”, inspired Barbara to transpose music from the film on the piano. The twins were encouraged by their grandparents to follow their own artistic paths, Barbara was gifted her first piano, from her grandmother. Lili's grandfather gave her a white toy guitar; dressed to the nines he with would sneak into Mass to hear her sing in choir, a voice he could hear above the others. The sisters took divergent paths. After studying at the Eddie Simon Guitar school and the Shelia Jordan workshop, Lili jumped headfirst into the Greenwich Village music scene and went on to record the first of her nine albums. Barbara graduated with honors from C.C.N.Y with a degree in music and , after seeing the devastating realities from her sisters struggles in the music industry, she chose a career in law enforcement allowing her to compose and create music on her own terms. Diana Estey was last seen at her home on Medford Center Road in Medford, Maine on October 31, 2016. She has never been heard from again. She wasn't reported missing for several days because she lived alone and wasn't in daily contact with her family. Estey, who is childless and never married, grew up in Medford and left the state in the 1990s. She returned in the spring of 2015 and moved back into her childhood home. She was making extensive repairs to the house, including a new roof and a new foundation. She was in excellent physical and mental health and was active for her age. She enjoyed walking in the woods near her home and traveling around the state with loved ones. Her disappearance is considered suspicious, as there were no indications that she had planned to leave, and police have not ruled out the possibility of foul play. Her case remains unsolved. Contemporary Native American artist Kent Estey is an enrolled member of the White Earth Nation of Ojibwe in Northwestern Minnesota. Kent's lineage includes many self-taught artists where black-ash basketry, beading, birch-bark, and fiber artistry were everyday occurrences in his home. Kent's preferred art form is painting with oils, acrylics, and inks. His paintings reflect feelings and emotions through his use of color and movement on the canvas. Kent says, “a lot of the time, the art happens by listening to my feelings. The colors, movement, and elements fall into place, creating something beautiful and intimately meaningful.” Some of his most recent work incorporates rock, metal, and collage on canvas and board. Kent's work has been exhibited in Minneapolis, Saint Paul, Bemidji, Grand Rapids, Duluth, Wahpeton, North Dakota, and other regional exhibitions and galleries in Minnesota. Most recently, Kent was awarded the Region 2 Arts Council Artist Fellowship for 2023-2024 and is serving as board chair of the Manoomin Arts Initiative on the White Earth Reservation. Kent has been an educator for most of his life, living and working in his hometown of Naytahwaush, Minnesota. Photo Credit: Jeremy Simonson

Emily Rodger and her cohost Dave Veale welcome Jennifer Krueger, Founder and Executive Director of the Estey Art Initiative. Jennifer's profound connection to art, nurtured by her grandmother, Mary Cornell, has driven her to explore various styles and mediums, continually pushing the boundaries of her artistic abilities. The episode delves into the remarkable work of the Estey Art Initiative, which brings the transformative power of art to elementary schools across New Brunswick. Jennifer shares the organization's origin story, highlighting its growth from serving three schools to impacting the entire province. Through a unique approach, Estey ensures that no child is turned away by renting children's art pieces to businesses. For each rented piece, a child's tuition is covered, making art education accessible to all. Jennifer emphasizes the core values of Estey Art Initiative, placing the well-being and empowerment of children above the final art product. The presence of an emotional support person during programming ensures a nurturing environment where children can explore their creativity without pressure. The conversation also addresses the importance of paying artists, recognizing their invaluable contributions to society and fostering a sustainable art ecosystem. The power of art to inspire, transform, and foster personal growth is a central theme of the episode. Co-host Dave Veale shares his insights from leading leadership workshops, highlighting the profound impact of incorporating creativity into various aspects of life. Emily Rodger suggests embracing the spirit of art in the business world, proposing that Dave adopt a child-produced art piece called 'Candy Cow' for his boardroom. In this episode, supplied by Hilary Estey, she offers 2 tips for giving feedback to employees so that it is heard and acted upon.
We begin this episode by answering questions from a med student who is a Plenary Session fan. We transition from there to a discussion of the recent news stories on the FAA's handling of the Boeing 737 Max controversy and how this reflects on other USA regulatory agencies like the FDA. After a critique of the recent paper "Deleterious Germline Mutations Are a Risk Factor for Neoplastic Progression Among High-Risk Individuals Undergoing Pancreatic Surveillance" published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology, we end with an interview with Dr. Elihu Estey of the University of Washington on his 40 years of experience as an oncologist, the "Renaissance" of drugs for leukemia, and advice for trainees on how to approach career goals. The Lord’s Prayer could actually be The Disciples Prayer. Jesus has us pray not personal prayer but a communal prayer. What happens when intercede? What happens when we have the boldness to truly pray about “Our Father” and not just my Father?

This question was sent by Anders and he wrote: Hi Vidas and Ausra! I´m following the information you give with great interest. I have been playing the piano for a while but I´m not very good at it, though I really love it and listening to great music, Classic as well as Jazz and Ragtime. In the last period I have started to think much about playing the organ and I've asked the local organist to give me lessons (lessons are free in the Swedish Church) and I hope lessons will start this autumn. I bought an old Electronic organ but am extremely disappointed since the sound is outright awful. It´s not what is called a Church organ, they´re much more expensive. I will throw my Electronic organ and buy some good instrument with a really good sound. The short answer to the questions are: 1.) My Dream is to be able to play "well enough" on the organ some of my favorite music on a good pipe organ. This I wish to do in a Church where I can enjoy the fantastic and mysterious sound of the different voices of the pipes. 2.) What is stopping me is really nothing except: A.) The feeling that I have no time (I do have long working days and other commitments) B.) The feeling that my wife really doesn't enjoy listening to me repeating the difficult parts over and over again. Though she doesn't complain. C.) The lack of a good instrument. And these three things shouldn't stop me. I know and I´m working on it... Now I´ll explain what I mean by playing "well enough": It´s not at all necessary for me to dream of reaching a level of high professionalism, though I fully understand and wish to play with correctness and musicality. For me it´s better to listen to an amateur playing a simple piece very well instead of some half-professional doing a sloppy job on too complicated pieces. I think that for me it will be much more realistic to find, or even better, to be able to arrange the music so it will be simple but still beautiful and retaining the real spirit and essence of the pieces. For that I obviously will have to learn about music theory and learn to play chords and their inversions etc. Maybe not so impossible. For instance i have maybe 5-6 different versions of some piece of music ranging from the very simple to the very difficult. And it´s far from always the fastest version with most notes and difficult fingering that catches the essentials! Thank god for that. I have some rather simple pieces that are really beautiful if you perform them correct and with real spirit. My taste includes classical pieces such as "Poem" by Fibich, pieces by Grieg and Delius and some very nice pieces by Eric Satie. Some jazz pieces I wish to play are maybe not very well known but some are jazz standards. I especially point out some outstanding jazz recordings made by Fats Waller in 1927 on a Church pipe organ (Estey). There has not been any recordings of jazz organ to compare with before or after these few musical pearls, so rich in harmony and feeling. Of course I will never be able to play like Waller did, far from. But maybe be able to play some simplified and still beautiful version in a not too fast tempo. In my opinion speed is not often very important, many pieces win on being played slower but correctly giving time to listen to the music. As a rounding off I wish to say that I fully appreciate and try to apply the principles of slow playing in practice, repeating until I play without faults and learning a piece step by step. Actually I was smiling with remembrance when I read through your "Organ practice is a privilege". The reason is that I already knew about the principles since my last wife was a really good piano teacher (from St Petersburg). And she applied these rules. Before she died 6 years ago I was lucky to learn the importance of these rules, though I was never a very good pupil. And it was maybe not so easy to have the wife as a teacher (she was really serious). Best of Wishes, Anders from Sweden
My guest this week is Chris Estey. Chris and I share a connection to a very specific music scene that Seattle was a center of in the latter half of the 90’s. I was so, so excited to have this conversation with him. It did not disappoint. Many bands will be referenced here plus lots of talk about politics, religion, and the musical traditions of Seattle. Chris has had connections to Light in the Attic, Tooth & Nail Records, Bandoppler Magazine, and many more music-associated works. He is currently with XO Publicity and working on a book that I am very excited about.

Session Americana is a band/collective of talented musicians who craft a musical experience unlike any other. Their onstage kit includes a ragtag collection of instruments that have lived a life: a vintage suitcase recast as a kick drum, an old Estey field organ, a pre-war parlor guitar, a mandocello and all of its smaller siblings, a harmonica case fire damaged in a bar far and graffitied by Depeche Mode roadies, and an assortment of other instruments that get passed around in this freewheeling modern hootenanny. The group brings a kind of ease and genuineness to this timeless music, sometimes presenting the latest batch of original songs, sometimes reaching back into depths of the American "song bag."Session Americana started life as actual sessions, onstage in Boston. At a certain point, the stage in Boston turned into writing original music and a trip to Kimon Kirk's home studio to discover their full potential. As Jefferson Hamer says, bands don't need formal studios to create great music anymore " a fact that has opened the door to a freer, less-formal recording style. For this Session Americana Session, Billy Beard (drums), Ry Cavanaugh (multiple instruments, vocals), Kirk (bass, vocals), Dinty Child (field organ, mandocello, mandolin, accordion, guitar) and Hamer (guitar, vocals) stopped by BeeHive Studios in Saranac Lake, New York, for some sweet collaborations and exclusive video recordings.
