Growing up in Denver, Colorado, Kali Fajardo-Anstine did not see herself, nor her family, represented in books or television. But, she knew she wanted to be a writer. Kali is a mixed Chicana woman with Indigenous and Filipino ancestry; she brings all of that into her work in hopes of creating a space where readers feel represented and seen. Kali is also the author of “Sabrina and Corina,” a collection of short stories that explore the lives of Chicanos and Chicanas in and around Dever, and she recently released her debut novel, “Woman of Light.” In this episode of Latino USA, Kali talks about how her life experiences and identity blend into her work and how she's honoring her ancestors from the American West through her writing.

Posted by Adam Turteltaub Compliance teams spend a great deal of time and effort encouraging employees to contact the helpline.  But, points out Jay Anstine, Compliance Program Director, Western Division, Banner Health, we tend to make less of an effort to train them in what happens after they make that call. That's a mistake, he argues in this podcast, since employees who see perceived wrongdoing tend to feel anxious and vulnerable.  They are stressed because they are uncertain what is going to happen, if anything. By helping them understand the post-call process, we can eliminate this blind spot, he argues, greatly reduce the stress level, and increase the likelihood that they will come forward.  That means providing training that brings greater clarity to the process during on-boarding and annually thereafter.  It also means taking the time to understand the questions the workforce may have about what happens from start to finish. Also, he advises, include in the training information about what to expect when reporting face to face, either to their supervisor, or somewhere else, including the compliance team. Finally, Jay provides insight into how to make the reporter feel comfortable when bringing the information to compliance, and what you can do to protect his or her anonymity. Listen in to learn more about how demystifying the helpline could help yours ring more often.

Post By: Adam Turteltaub A data breach occurs and the thinking immediately flies to the question of how many files were breached. Jay Anstine, Area Compliance Program Director, Western Division Rural Hospitals for Banner Health, argues that’s just the start. Organizations should also take the time to understand the perspective of the victim. It’s an exercise to remember at the time of the breach, but thinking about it before can also have a positive impact on compliance training. As he points out in this podcast it encourages empathy, which can transform the way we think about compliance education. Suddenly it’s a lot less about specific rules and regulations and about the more easily-relatable and far more memorable human costs of a compliance failure. The importance of empathy doesn’t stop there.  He encourages compliance teams to take a more empathetic approach in general. That includes being attuned to the rest of the organization’s awareness of compliance, being sure to let them know you understand what they are saying and ensuring you are communicating in a way that they can relate to. Listen in to learn more about the benefits of a more human, empathetic approach to compliance.

On this week’s episode of The Self-ish Latina Podcast, I had the honor of meeting with the one and only Kali Fajardo-Anstine. Kali is a Colorado native and author of the story collection series Sabrina & Corina, which has been recognized as a National Book Award Finalist in Fiction, among many other recognitions and awards. Kali’s stories, which take place right here in the familiarness of Denver, Colorado, explore themes of identity, relationships, the truths and exploitation of ones homeland, and navigating indigenous ancestry. With strong Latina females as the protagonists in her pieces, Kali emotionally and elegantly deconstructs systems of oppression, confronts the experience of abandonment, and speaks to her truth. In this episode, we not only discuss Kali's stories, but we step into vulnerable and deep territories.  Along with Kali, I feature a conversation with our summer intern, April Morland. April is also from Denver, Colorado and is in her fourth year at Santa Clara University studying Communication and Film! She worked alongside the team this summer helping with podcast production, social media content creation, and has even helped us behind the scenes with the exciting projects yet to come (read: She was deeply involved in several development conversations about our new film!) She not only taps into some of the themes discussed by Kali, but shares her own story of healing through the exploration of her roots and the importance of personal expression through art.    In this episode, we talk about: Kali’s journey of writing Sabrina & Corina and how she has to be self-ish in order to get to where she is today through honoring her calling. She speaks about coming to own her Latinidad through the many barriers presented to her. Some of the topics we discuss include the complexities of the mother-daughter relationship, the abandonment of one's roots through colonialism, and learning to embrace who we are through our own “enoughness.” We touch on navigating being in “two worlds” and the ever familiar not feeling “Latino/a enough.”  One of the main themes of this podcast is sharing how we can use personal experiences and hardships to create art, heal, and touch others. We can make beautiful out of the ugly and difficulties life throws at us. I speak with April about her journey as an artist and how she uses her art (filmmaking) as a form of healing.  Through our conversations, I introduce concepts often discussed in the Eñye Dream Accelerator (EDA), such as allowing ourselves to ask for help. That fact that it is OKAY to seek help from others as uncomfortable as it may feel and one of my personal favs, you earn your success in life simply by being who you are. Join the conversation about this episode in our Facebook group or shoot me a DM on IG @projectenye and share some of your answers with me there!

I am blessed to know a lot of beautiful women in the gun community.  I asked a few what their thoughts were when the inappropriate happens.  You'll hear from Fate of Destinee, Mia Anstine, Lil Chantilly and Finesse Sinclair.  Plus maybe even some insight about how sex sells or not.  I asked them how do you handle the stupid stuff we say to you?     http://Crossbreedholsters.com   http://isrealitactical.com   http://gofundme.com/blackmanwithagunbooktour      blanchardmediagroup.com
