It's very easy to start losing our identity in what we do. In athletics, it's especially easy to find our worth and value in our performance. We are constantly working for success, but too many don't know how to handle or process failure. The wheels came off the day the bar results arrived. I have no idea how long I had been an alcoholic drinker by then, but I have a few guesses where it started. Years prior, I was in a serious accident, hitting the pavement at more than 55 miles per hour. A couple of surgeries and more than a decade of rehab later and I still feel discomfort every day. At the time, painkillers made me nauseous, but I had to quell the pain, so I turned to wine. A lot of wine. A seed was planted – alcohol numbed physical pain. True Surrender a Foundation for Unity, preached by Ray Woodward.

Does surrender lie in the hands of the disciple or the guru? What does true surrender mean? Some, surrender due to fear, but is this really surrender? Some, surrender due to the awe of miracles, is that truly surrender? Om Swami narrates a beautiful story of a Sufi saint, where he explains that when people surrender due to seeing miracles performed by a guru, there is an expectation, and when their personal expectations are not met their surrender fades as well. Surrender is in our hands, and the most beautiful thing about surrender is that it never goes to waste - no matter who you surrender to. In surrender there is acceptance. The natural flow of transfer has to occur from top to bottom, it cannot happen on the same level. In the same way, a guru can only give blessings to a disciple if they have surrendered. The discourse ends on a deeply insightful note -- Om Swami says, in this world, most people are looking for confirmation of their beliefs and not information, that's why their experiences remain informational and not transformational. This will lead to an invention, not a discovery of their truth. Millions are born and millions die - they die, just the way they were born with no spiritual growth or evolution. We thought that this ended up being a particularly interesting episode. We recorded it in the immediate aftermath of the George Floyd tragedy so that naturally became part of the discussion. Anna also confessed that she has been feeling a crisis of faith around the fundamental principle of Vedic Knowledge: that ultimately benevolent forces are the most powerful and that love will win out in the end.
