Long before CBS cast Tyler Grey as operator Trent Sawyer on the hit show SEAL Team, he was a real-life Army Ranger sniper turned operator assigned to the US Army's most secretive counterterrorism special missions unit. He deployed multiple times to Iraq and Afghanistan, where he went after high-value targets and endured multiday reconnaissance missions in austere terrain. His military career changed forever after Grey was seriously wounded in an explosion during a nighttime raid in Sadr City, Iraq. The injuries took him out of the fight and put him in a hospital for months. His post-injury transition wasn't easy, but it led him to be a prominent veterans' advocate and started him on his new path: acting and producing in Hollywood. As someone who has been there, and done that, Grey provides a lot of value on set, helping to keep everything realistic and authentic. In our Season 4 opener, Tyler speaks candidly about the challenges he faced during his transition. From chasing adrenaline to confronting grief and the desire for the peace he found in chaos, self-imposed or not. He shares some great advice about creating awareness about what isn't working for you anymore, how Hollywood is getting it right in how they are telling our stories and other ways in which they're missing the target.Great stuff, let's dive right in!Show notes:Find out more about Tyler Grey here. Here's how to watch SEAL Team. For more information about All Secure Foundation, visit https://allsecurefoundation.org/

Tyler Grey grew up in Bakersfield, California, joined the army in 1998 and quickly advanced from training into the 75th Ranger Regiment, 2nd Battalion, spending most of his time there as a Sniper. He spent the rest of his career at Ft. Bragg. Grey deployed four times - two each to Afghanistan and Iraq - before he became disabled from an explosion that occurred during a late-night house raid that turned into a gun-battle in Baghdad in 2005. Nowadays, Tyler's an actor, producer, and director on the CBS show SEAL Team, where he puts his skills to work teaching others about the challenges our country's heroes face every day. But how did he get to work on an actual television show? Do people assume he used to be a SEAL? And what exactly happened in that late-night house raid in 2005 that changed everything? ----------Chapters:00:00 - Intro02:00 - ...But I Play One on TV07:30 - Military Rivalries10:00 - Morning Routine12:30 - Hit on a Motorcycle16:00 - Combat in Hollywood22:00 - Filming Action Isn't Easy24:00 - I Do All My Own Stunts30:00 - Breaking Into Hollywood36:00 - Real Kits, Real Guns42:00 - Breaching Pyrotechnics44:00 - On-Set Shootings on The Crow & Rust49:00 - Growing Up in Bakersfield, CA54:00 - Green Beret Dreams, Army Ranger Realities1:11:00 - A First-Mission Combat Story1:15:00 - The Best-Kept Secret in the Military1:20:00 - Spec Ops Training Starts at Zero1:27:30 - Feeling Like a Superhero1:28:00 - A 2-Man Graduation1:30:00 - Big Boy Pranks1:32:00 - A Delta Force Operator1:36:00 - A Thirty-Thousand Foot View1:37:00 - Horribly Wrong1:42:00 - A Fallujah Walkout1:44:00 - Brilliantly Operated1:50:00 - Military Married1:52:00 - Second Deployment, '05-'061:54:00 - A Morbid Curiosity2:01:00 - A Cool Dog Story2:06:30 - Getting Blown Up: A Play-by-Play2:31:30 - 60 Days in the Hospital2:35:30 - 30-40% Mobility 2:38:00 - Being In Sets You Up for Being Out2:43:30 - A Fundamentally Self-Destructive Person2:46:15 - L.T.S.D.2:52:30 - Self Destruction is Growth, Kinda2:57:30 - Finding RAMBOSupport Tyler Grey: IG: https://www.instagram.com/tyleragreySEAL Team on CBS: https://www.cbs.com/shows/seal-team------------Sponsors:MasterworksSkip the waitlist, support the show, and start investing in blue-chip art today at https://www.masterworks.art/mikedrop“net returns” refers to the annualized internal rate of return net of all fees and costs, calculated from the offering closing date to the sale date. Why Listen: My guest today has done the seemingly impossible - he went from medically discharged from the Army Rangers to consultant, director, and actor on CBS’ Seal Team, amongst other impressive accomplishments. But what sets Tyler apart isn’t his incredible accomplishments, it is his attitude. In this interview, Tyler talks about how we are all equally unprepared for our military transition - be it from medical injury or after 30 years of a career. He talks about giving up control, and putting in the effort even if it takes decades to achieve your dreams. He talks about networking, about what one wants to do versus what one NEEDS to do in life, about how Veteran is a status, not a job title, and more. Regardless of your interest in Hollywood, I guarantee there are multiple inspirational and motivational lessons for you in today’s interview. It’s 2005 and the “High Value Target” mission in Sadr City, Iraq is underway. Tyler Grey, an Assaulter on the Tier 1 Counter Terrorism Unit, is inside the house working his way slowly through the dark. Suddenly there’s gunfire in the hallway, followed by a massive explosion. Grey’s body takes the bulk force. He’s sent straight up in the air, hitting the ceiling and falling back down -- HARD. From his wrist to his elbow, his arm is in shreds and his artery is severed. Tyler Grey life as he knows it, will never be the same again. The night of terror in 2005, that nearly took Tyler Grey’s life, may have signaled the end of his career in the Special Forces, but it opened up a completely new role, that he could never have imagined possible -- going to Hollywood and playing the part of a Navy Seal. Tyler Grey showed everyone he was not out for the count – not by a long shot. He is now a producer and actor (who plays Trent) on the critically acclaimed CBS series “Seal Team”. Along with other Special Ops Veterans, he’s involved in every aspect of production to make sure it’s the real deal – an authenticity that hasn’t been seen at this level on Television before. But it goes beyond just making sure it’s a genuine portrayal of Navy Seals. Tyler Grey and the production team have a bigger mission. They want to provide a platform where Veterans’ real life, hard to talk about issues can be addressed through the storyline and characters -- in turn helping others understand those who have experienced the trauma of warfare. This is the remarkable story of how one man chose to overcome his own obstacles and dedicate his life helping others face theirs.

Tyler Grey is a Army Veteran and former Tier 1 operator. He was severely injured in Iraq during a mission, which changed the course of his career. He now spends his time working in Hollywood (in front and behind the camera), advocating for veterans, and doing security consulting. He’s an incredible guy, and really engaging. In this episode we discuss: The viral Memorial Day tribute video he was in His awesome documentary, That Which I Love Destroys Me His history channel show, The Selection His recovery and struggles with losing his dream job His theory of LTSD, and how he misses war How veterans can more effectively transition out of the military.
GRP 51-This is the longest episode we've done. Just under three hours of madness is the best way to describe it. Co-hosting is British Army Combat Medic and author of "Battleworn" Chantel Taylor. Along with Tim Kolczak from the Veterans Project, and Tyler Grey. Tyler served for several years within Army Special Operations before he was wounded while on an operation that nearly cost him his arm. We talk about his injury, the recovery process, PTSD, Flame Throwers, MACV-SOG, suicide bombers and much more. Below is an excerpt from the episode: Chantel: At that time, you had all of this going on around you. Obviously, people needed to carry on with the mission. We all learn self-aid then buddy aid and care under fire. Were you the only one injured? Tyler Grey: As soon as it happened I had extreme pain in my arm. I had a feeling it wasn't there. I couldn't see anything. I was on my knees feeling around for my arm but I couldn't find it. There was a massive fight going on around me. There had been 3, or 4 people shot outside of the house. We went in and a guy got shot to the left of me. I got blown up and a guy to the right of me got blown up with me. Another guy came in the room then got blown out of it. It's so cliché to say. I hate to say it but it's like everything's in slow motion, well motherfucker yeah it was in slow motion (laughs). John: If you're going to build a bridge to connect the veteran community with society you would need people to build the bridge on both ends, and meet in the middle. It could really make things work. We have a huge community of people who support the military. Talented driven people who can bring a lot to the table. With the podcast, and social media, articles, what Tim's doing with the Veterans Project, through veterans telling stories with movies, or books. It can help bring the right people together and build this bridge the right way. We spoke about the differences between the way warriors were treated in the past and now with what can be perceived as a negative aspect of it. At the same time, we have made progress and can utilize these tools that are at our disposable. Send questions or comments to Podcast@globalrecon.net
